In this paper a new PCA-based positioning sensor and localization system for mobile robots to operate in unstructured environments (e. g. industry, services, domestic ...) is proposed and experimentally validated. The inexpensive positioning system resorts to principal component analysis (PCA) of images acquired by a video camera installed onboard, looking upwards to the ceiling. This solution has the advantage of avoiding the need of selecting and extracting features. The principal components of the acquired images are compared with previously registered images, stored in a reduced onboard image database, and the position measured is fused with odometry data. The optimal estimates of position and slippage are provided by Kalman filters, with global stable error dynamics. The experimental validation reported in this work focuses on the results of a set of experiments carried out in a real environment, where the robot travels along a lawn-mower trajectory. A small position error estimate with bounded co-variance was always observed, for arbitrarily long experiments, and slippage was estimated accurately in real time.

A new method, based on linear correlation and phase diagrams was successfully developed for processes like the sedimentary process, where the deposition phase can have different time duration - represented by repeated values in a series - and where the erosion can play an important rule deleting values of a series. The sampling process itself can be the cause of repeated values - large strata twice sampled - or deleted values: tiny strata fitted between two consecutive samples. What we developed was a mathematical procedure which, based upon the depth chemical composition evolution, allows the establishment of frontiers as well as the periodicity of different sedimentary environments. The basic tool isn't more than a linear correlation analysis which allow us to detect the existence of eventual evolution rules, connected with cyclical phenomena within time series (considering the space assimilated to time), with the final objective of prevision. A very interesting discovery was the phenomenon of repeated sliding windows that represent quasi-cycles of a series of quasi-periods. An accurate forecast can be obtained if we are inside a quasi-cycle (it is possible to predict the other elements of the cycle with the probability related with the number of repeated and deleted points). We deal with an innovator methodology, reason why it's efficiency is being tested in some case studies, with remarkable results that shows it's efficacy. he expansion of Digital Television and the convergence between conventional broadcasting and television over IP contributed to the gradual increase of the number of available channels and on demand video content. Moreover, the dissemination of the use of mobile devices like laptops, smartphones and tablets on everyday activities resulted in a shift of the traditional television viewing paradigm from the couch to everywhere, anytime from any device. Although this new scenario enables a great improvement in viewing experiences, it also brings new challenges given the overload of information that the viewer faces. Recommendation systems stand out as a possible solution to help a watcher on the selection of the content that best fits his/her preferences. This paper describes a web based system that helps the user navigating on broadcasted and online television content by implementing recommendations based on collaborative and content based filtering. The algorithms developed estimate the similarity between items and users and predict the rating that a user would assign to a particular item (television program, movie, etc.). To enable interoperability between different systems, programs characteristics (title, genre, actors, etc.) are stored according to the TV-Anytime standard. The set of recommendations produced are presented through a Web Application that allows the user to interact with the system based on the obtained recommendations.

A Smart TV é um equipamento novo e em evolução que incorpora um computador e acesso à Internet em ecrãs de grande qualidade. Permite a implementação de serviços interactivos, acesso à Internet e televisão. À medida que a tecnologia melhora, muitos equipamentos estão a tornar-se tão capazes quanto os computadores normais quando se trata de navegação na web e até mesmo vídeo na Internet (Video-on-Demand e streaming de vídeo). O projecto de estágio “NONIUS.TV na Smart TV LG Pro:Centric” foi desenvolvido na empresa Nonius Software que está inserida no ramo das telecomunicações. Uma das suas áreas de actividade está relacionada com o desenvolvimento de plataformas de entretenimento para o mercado hoteleiro, combinando diversos serviços e funcionalidades a pensar no hóspede. Este projecto teve como finalidade implementar alguns dos serviços e funcionalidades já existentes em plataformas que usam uma Set-Top Box da Nonius Software, numa Smart TV, aproveitando também para inovar e criar novos serviços. Nesse conjunto está incluída a implementação de uma Caixa de Mensagens, Serviço de Quartos, Serviço de Desporto e Lazer, Serviços Informativos, um cliente RTSP, um despertador, um sistema de mudança de idioma e outras pequenas funcionalidades desenvolvidas ao longo de toda a aplicação. Esta dissertação apresenta um estudo sobre as tecnologias Smart TV existentes no mercado, assim como as vantagens e desvantagens da sua utilização para este projecto. Após uma análise de requisitos de forma a estruturar e desenhar os serviços e funcionalidades a serem criados para a aplicação, implementou-se um conjunto de serviços, usando a linguagem de programação ActionScript 2.0, que permitiram à empresa disponibilizar um novo produto baseado na televisão Pro:Centric da LG.

Post-MAPS is a web platform that collects gastroenterological exam data from several european hospital centers, to be used in future clinical studies and was developed in partnership with experts from the gastroenterological area and information technology (IT) technicians. However, although functional, this platform has some issues that are crucial for its functioning, and can render user interaction unpleasant and exhaustive. Accordingly, we proposed the development of a new web platform, in which we aimed for an improvement in terms of usability, data uni cation and interoperability. Therefore, it was necessary to identify and study different ways of acquiring clinical data and review some of the existing clinical databases in order to understand how they work and what type of data they store, as well as their impact and contribution to clinical knowledge. Closely linked to the data model is the ability to share data with other systems, so, we also studied the concept of interoperability and analyzed some of the most widely used international standards, such as DICOM, HL7 and openEHR. As one of the primary objectives of this project was to achieve a better level of usability, practices related to Human Computer-Interaction, such as requirement analysis, creation of conceptual models, prototyping, and evaluation were also studied. Before we began the development, we conducted an analysis of the previous platform, from a functional point of view, which allowed us to gather not only a list of architectural and interface issues, but also a list of improvement opportunities. It was also performed a small preliminary study in order to evaluate the platform's usability, where we were able to realize that perceived usability is different between users, and that, in some aspects, varies according to their location, age and years of experience. Based on the information gathered during the platform's analysis and in the conclusions of the preliminary study, a new platform was developed, prepared for all potential users, from the inexperienced to the most comfortable with technology. It presents major improvements in terms of usability, also providing several new features that simplify the users' work, improving their interaction with the system, making their experience more enjoyable.

Muito se tem falado sobre revolução tecnológica e do aparecimento constante de novas aplicações Web, com novas funcionalidades que visam facilitar o trabalho dos utilizadores. Mas será que estas aplicações garantem que os dados transmitidos são tratados e enviados por canais seguros (protocolos)? Que garantias é que o utilizador tem que mesmo que a aplicação utilize um canal, que prevê a privacidade e integridade de dados, esta não apresente alguma vulnerabilidade pondo em causa a informação sensível do utilizador? Software que não foi devidamente testado, aliado à falta de sensibilização por parte dos responsáveis pelo desenvolvimento de software para questões de segurança, levam ao aumento de vulnerabilidades e assim exponenciam o número de potenciais vítimas. Isto aliado ao efeito de desinibição que o sentimento de invisibilidade pode provocar, conduz ao facilitismo e consequentemente ao aumento do número de vítimas alvos de ataques informáticos. O utilizador, por vezes, não sabe muito bem do que se deve proteger, pois a confiança que depõem no software não pressupõem que os seus dados estejam em risco. Neste contexto foram recolhidos dados históricos relativos a vulnerabilidades nos protocolos SSL/TLS, para perceber o impacto que as mesmas apresentam e avaliar o grau de risco. Para além disso, foram avaliados um número significativo de domínios portugueses para perceber se os mesmos têm uma vulnerabilidade específica do protocolo SSL/TLS.

All over the world, many earth buildings are deteriorating due to lack of maintenance and repair. Repairs on rammed earth walls are mainly done with mortars, by rendering application; however, often the repair is inadequate, resorting to the use of incompatible materials, including cement-based mortars. It has been observed that such interventions, in walls that until that day only had presented natural ageing issues, created new problems, much more dangerous for the building than the previous ones, causing serious deficiencies in this type of construction. One of the problems is that the detachment of the new cement-based mortar rendering only occurs after some time but, until that occurrence, degradations develop in the wall itself. When the render detaches, instead of needing only a new render, the surface has to be repaired in depth, with a repair mortar. Consequently, it has been stablished that the renders, and particularly repair mortars, should have physical, mechanical and chemical properties similar to those of the rammed earth walls. This article intends to contribute to a better knowledge of earth-based mortars used to repair the surface of rammed earth walls. The studied mortars are based on four types of earth: three of them were collected from non-deteriorated parts of walls of unstabilized rammed earth buildings located in Alentejo region, south of Portugal; the fourth is a commercial earth, consisting mainly of clay. Other components were also used, particularly: sand to control shrinkage; binders stabilizers such as dry hydrated air-lime, natural hydraulic lime, Portland cement and natural cement; as well as natural vegetal fibers (hemp fibers). The experimental analysis of the mortars in the fresh state consisted in determining the consistency by flow table and the bulk density. In the hardened state, the tests made it possible to evaluate the following properties: linear and volumetric shrinkage; capillary water absorption; drying capacity; dynamic modulus of elasticity; flexural and compressive strength.
