Purpose - Despite research studies indicating strong support for labelling information, uncertainty remains with respect to how labels influence consumers. This paper attempts to empirically investigate how consumers who differ in terms of environmentalism respond to labels.

Design/methodology/approach - The data were collected on an Australian sample using a structured questionnaire administered on the phone using quantum research (CATI) data collection services. A total of 155 questionnaires were completed and used for data analysis. The data were analysed using both descriptive measures and correlations between variables.

Findings - There appears to be a proportion of consumers that find product labels hard to understand. The research found that there are consumers who will buy green products even if they are lower in quality in comparison to alternative products, but would look for environmental information on labels. With respect to price sensitive green consumers, there appears to be a relationship between price sensitivity and 'always' reading labels as well as indicating that there is 'sufficient' information on product labels to make informed purchase decisions.

Research limitations/implications - It was beyond the scope of the research to account for some of the utilitarian approaches to interpretation or in-depth comprehension of label information. The sample size of 155, although selected using a probability method, may, to some extent, limit the overall accuracy of the results.

Practical implications - Offers some important information on different green consumer segments that would alert managers on how best to position environmental labels. Findings such as 'Satisfied with labels' correlates with 'Labels are accurate', which suggests that businesses need to provide a clear, accurate and easily legible label design to encourage satisfaction with the accuracy of content and the communication aspects of a label.

Originality/value - Contributes to better understanding of green customers purchase intentions and the usefulness of ecological product labels. It offers some insights and assistance to businesses in planning their green product/labelling strategies.

The concept of market orientation has received a great deal of attention from marketing scholars, indicating its conceptual and practical importance. The concept has been investigated from many perspectives and examined in many ways. The current general understanding is that market orientation, in most cases, is positively related to some measures of organisational performance and that different internal and external situations moderate this relationship. This paper aims to (1) introduce a measure of market orientation effectiveness, which represents a synthesis of the influence of different internal and external moderators on market orientation, and (2) measure the association of market orientation effectiveness with (a) a marketing performance outcome and (b) the overall organisational financial performance. The results from a survey of 216 large Australian businesses indicated that some variables (an organisation’s strategy of cost leadership, market strength, implementation effectiveness, and market volatility) have positive contributions at different degrees to market orientation effectiveness, while anticipated competitive reaction contributes negatively. Results also indicated that in the sample studied, both market orientation and market orientation effectiveness were more strongly associated with a measure of marketing performance, than with the overall financial performance, which is a function of both marketing and non-marketing initiatives.

This paper empirically examines the research productivity of academic institutions in the leading international marketing journals, leading generalist marketing journals, and leading international business journals between the years 1999 and 2003 from a regional and country-specific perspective. The research found that across the three groups of journals, the majority of works were authored by academics at institutions located in North America, although North Americans contribute significantly less in the international marketing and international business journals than leading generalist marketing journals. The findings suggest that there is a broadening of non-U.S. influence within the international marketing and international business journals, which should lead to a broadening of international marketing theory.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the antecedents of organisational performance (OP), both financial and marketing, and the influence of holding a strategic market orientation (MO) where customer-base volatility is taken into account.

Design/methodology/approach –
A sample of 167 marketing organisations in Australia was surveyed to test the hypothesised model. Structural equation modelling was employed in the data analysis.

Findings – Use of the world wide web (Web) reported by organisations in this study indicates that there is still separate use of the Web and that it has yet to be fully integrated into the marketing strategy of many organisations. The study finds that traditional marketing effort mediates the relationship between holding a MO and OP in terms of financial indicators.

Research limitations/implications – A major limitation of this study is that it surveys organisations from many industries rather than selected industries. This tends to mask some of the possible outcomes.

Practical implications – The findings in this study suggest that traditional and online elements of marketing effort each mediate the influence of holding a MO on OP, but differently. Innovation culture is found to influence both marketing practice and marketing performance, directly. A single measure of environmental turbulence – customer-base turbulence or churn – negatively affects marketing performance, and ultimately financial performance.

Originality/value –
A major contribution of this study is the examination of use of the Web in marketing effort and how this usage influences financial and marketing performance.

Temperature changes in conducting polypyrrole/para-toluene-2-sulphonic acid (PPy/pTSA) coated nylon textiles due to microwave absorption in the 8–9 GHz and 15–16 GHz frequency ranges were obtained by a thermography station during simultaneous irradiation of the samples. The temperature values are compared and related to the amounts of reflection, transmission and absorption obtained with a non-contact free space transmission technique, indicating a relationship between microwave absorption and temperature increase. Non-conductive samples showed no temperature increase upon irradiation irrespective of frequency range. The maximum temperature difference of around 4 °C in the conducting fabrics relative to ambient temperature was observed in samples having 48% absorption and 26.5 ± 4% reflection. Samples polymerized for 60 or 120 min with a dopant concentration of 0.018 mol/l or polymerized for 180 min with a dopant concentration of 0.009 mol/l yielded optimum absorption levels. As the surface resistivity decreased and the reflection levels increased, the temperature increase upon irradiation reduced.

Porous Ti-50.5at.%Ni shape memory alloy (SMA) samples with a range of  porosities were prepared by spacer sintering. The porous structure of the alloy was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The phase constituents of the porous TiNi alloy were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The shape memory behavior of the porous TiNi alloy was investigated using loading–unloading compression tests. Results indicate that the porous TiNi alloy exhibits superelasticity and the recoverable strain by the superelasticity decreases with the increase of porosity. After a prestrain of 7%, the superelastically recovered strains for the porous TiNi alloy samples with porosities of 46%, 59%, 69% and 77% are 2.0%, 1.8%, 1.5% and 1.3%, respectively. The pores in the TiNi alloy samples cause stress/strain concentration, as well as crack initiation, which adversely affect the shape memory behavior of the porous TiNi alloy.

The study reported in this paper involves a comparison of Resnik & Stern’s (e.g., 1977) information cue usage in websites registered in two commercial domains of the World Wide Web (Web)—.com (global domain managed by VeriSign) and .com.au (a country domain, auDomain, managed by the Australian Domain Name Administrator—AUDA). The hypothesised higher use of information cues by digital marketers with .com registered domain names relative to .com.au registered domain names is not supported. Examination of the audited websites in the two-domain comparison confirms that the Web provides a richer marketing communication medium than other media analysed in a meta-analysis of 117 datasets by Abernethy & Franke (1996). The study is important given the acknowledged influence of advertising information on consumer responses to ads and the brands they relate, to both in traditional and new media (Aaker & Stayman, 1990; Brown & Stayman, 1992; Bruner & Kumar, 2000).

Most research into international marketing focuses on the differences in markets across countries and cultures in terms of the variation in customers and products involved. Arguably, if different products are developed and offered to different customers, then the roles and requirements of marketing employees may reflect these differences also. This research study used self-report measures by marketing employees in a large multinational automotive company in Australia and Britain. Using structural equation modelling, the study found that the relationship between individual marketing competencies and marketing performance varied across countries, suggesting that there may be cultural differences that influence both the role of managers in improving performance, and the degree to which a marketing employee’s intention to perform results in actual performance.

By investigating differences in social networks among entrepreneurs in 20 cultures, this paper contributes to the debate on whether there is universality in the process of entrepreneurial networking. Representative samples of entrepreneurs were identified in the same manner in 20 countries from 2000 to 2004 (N=€‰304,560). The sampling methodologies and the questions asked were similar across all countries. Logistic regression was used to test for significant regional interaction effects involving personally knowing an entrepreneur. Results are contrary to the existence of any mono-dimensional form of networking practice but do strongly support the existence of both variform universality (culture moderates the importance of networking) and functional universality (cultural similarities in networking practice exist).

In the present study, the influence of calcium ion deposition on the apatite-inducing ability of porous titanium(Ti) was investigated in a modified simulated body fluid (m-SBF). Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) solutions with five degrees of saturation were used to hydrothermally deposit Ca ions on porous Ti with a porosity of 80%. Apatite-inducing ability of the Ca-ion-deposited porous Ti was evaluated by soaking them in m-SBF for up to 14 days. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD) confirmed that a thin layer of calcium titanate (CaTiO3)/calcium oxide (CaO) mixture with a nanostructured porous network was produced on porous Ti substrates after hydrothermal treatment at 200 °C for 8 h. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results demonstrated that the content of the Ca ions deposited on Ti and the thickness of the CaTiO3/CaO layer increased with increasing saturation degree of the Ca(OH)2 solution. The thickest (over 10 nm) CaTiO3/CaO layer with the highest Ca content was achieved on the Ti treated in an oversaturated Ca(OH)2 solution (0.2 M). SEM, XRD, transmission electron microscopy and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy analysis indicated that the porous Ti samples deposited with the highest content of Ca ions exhibited the best apatite-inducing ability, producing a dense and complete carbonated apatite coating after a 14 day soaking in m-SBF. The present study illustrated the validity of using Ca ion deposition as a pre-treatment to endow desirable apatite-inducing ability of porous Ti for bone tissue engineering applications.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to identify place-specific dimensions of service quality in spectator sport settings and determine if the importance of these dimensions differed across cultures. The study was limited to the soccer industry and involved the collection of responses from identified soccer spectators to a range of items presented in a survey instrument. The survey was distributed to respondents face-to-face on a match day of the club they supported, or mailed to their home address. Responses were obtained from spectators from two clubs from Australia (n=277), one club from the USA (n=199), one club from the Netherlands (n=245) and one federation from Malaysia (n= 100). Based on the findings of a number of authors, six categories of potential place-specific dimensions of service quality in spectator sport settings were created and the research instrument contained a number of items that could be categorised under one of these headings. These categories were Home, Religion, Social facilitation, Sensory, Uncertainty of outcome, and Personal attention. In this thesis it was assumed that place-specific service quality issues are similar for sport spectators of different cultures, although differences in degree of importance of these dimensions (etic approach) were likely to emerge. In other words, although it was expected dimensions per country to be similar, differences in degree of importance of these dimensions were expected. Given the lack of confirmatory statistical evidence pertaining to the specific country samples, it was concluded that differences per country are likely to be more than just differences in degree. Both the overall structure and structures per country could not be confirmed, and hence the conclusion was drawn that differences in nature between the countries were present. In other words, what is a dimension of place-specific service quality in one country is not necessarily a dimension in another country. The results of a content analysis of ‘core component’ structures per country compared with a (full sample) core component structure delivered six components (referred to as place-specific dimensions of service quality) that were defined as Home, Hedonist, Religious follower, Safe atmosphere, Hospitality and Personal Attention. It was found that in most cases the cultural orientation of soccer spectators reflects the cultural orientation of the country as a whole as proposed by Hofstede (1991). However, in line with Huntington (1997), it was also argued that grouping people based on their country of origin as a proxy for their cultural orientation, will increasingly lead to flawed and incomplete research findings. As noted by Yoo etal. (1999), the identification of a person's cultural orientation is likely to deliver more direct results when measured at the individual level In that regard it is concluded that it may seem prudent to view Hofstede's dimensions of culture with increased conceptual scrutiny. Although having been replicated in multiple studies, it becomes increasingly unlikely that Hofstede's dimensions cover the complete spectrum of an individual person's cultural orientation. In conclusion, this study identified that soccer spectators (from a number of clubs) from Australia, the USA, the Netherlands and to a lesser extent Malaysia, perceive a range of place-specific service quality dimensions in spectator spoil settings to be important when visiting a soccer match. Before research into satisfaction with and value of place-specific dimensions of the spectator sport service product is initiated, it is pertinent the identified dimensions are further explored and confirmed in different country (culture) settings. The confusion that still exists about the place of the value concept (in relation to quality and satisfaction), where Holbrook (1994) defines quality as a type of value and Chelladurai and Chang (2000) argue that value is a type of quality, further underpins this necessity. It needs to be clear what are the targets of service quality before this information is integrated in larger holistic research frameworks. In the final section of the thesis a conceptual model for international services marketing research in the sport industry was presented as a first attempt to integrate the findings of this research and other researchers.

This doctoral study makes a unique contribution by examining both the integration of the Web in marketing, and the influence of this integration on organisational performance. The findings support the view that the marketing function adds value to organisations, but that the Web is not as fully utilised as it might be in Australasia.

This study examines the influence of socialization on work-related norms (WORKNORM). We tested the hypothesis that organizational (ORGSOC) and professional socialization (PROFSOC) are antecedent influences on WORKNORM, employing a sample of 339 marketing practitioners. The results of covariance structural analysis indicate that ORGSOC and PROFSOC and WORKNORM are discriminant constructs within the tested model. The study also reveals that the influence of ORGSOC on WORKNORM is stronger than the influence of PROFSOC on these same norms. Because this social learning occurs in work-related activities, in organizations, and in professional life, it is important that managers appreciate that these three separate domains influence decision making under ethical conditions. The limitations of the study and future research directions are discussed.
