Citizenship in the discourse of Egyptian political parties. EUSpring Working Paper No. 6, June 2015 [also Citizenship Report no. 3]

The concept of citizenship is one of the most complicated in political and social sciences. Its long process of historical development makes dealing with it particularly complicated. Citizenship is by nature a multi-dimensional concept: there is a legal citizenship, referring first to the equal legal status of individuals, for instance the equality between men and women. Legal citizenship also refers to a political dimension, the right to start and/or join political parties, or political participation more broadly. Thirdly, it has a religious dimension relating to the right of all religious groups to equally and freely practice their religious customs and rituals. Finally, legal citizenship possesses a socio-economic dimension related to the non-marginalisation of different social categories, for instance women. All of these dimensions, far from being purely objects of legal texts and codifications, are emerging as an arena of political struggle within the Egyptian society. Citizenship as a concept has its roots in European history and, more specifically, the emergence of the nation state in Europe and the ensuing economic and social developments in these societies. These social developments and the rise of the nation state have worked in parallel, fostering the notion of an individual citizen bestowed with rights and obligations. This gradual interaction was very different from what happened in the context of the Arab world. The emerging of the nation state in Egypt was an outcome of modernisation efforts from the top-down; it coercively redesigned the social structure, by eliminating or weakening some social classes in favour of others. These efforts have had an impact on the state-society relation at least in two respects. First, on the overlapping relation between some social classes and the state, and second, on the ability of some social groups to self-organise, define and raise their demands. This study identifies how different political parties in Egypt envision the multi-dimensional concept of citizenship. We focus on the following elements: Nature of the state (identity, nature of the regime) Liberties and rights (election laws, political party laws, etc.) Right to gather and organise (syndicates, associations, etc.) Freedom of expression and speech (right to protest, sit in, strike, etc.) Public and individual liberties (freedom of belief, personal issues, etc.) Rights of marginalised groups (women, minorities, etc.)

Luto nos familiares da pessoa em situação de cuidados paliativos

Enquadramento: O luto é algo complexo e abarca múltiplas dimensões que podem resultar em luto patológico. Objetivos: Determinar a prevalência de luto complicado em familiares de pessoas em situação paliativa; identificar que variáveis sociodemográficas e de contexto do luto interferem no processo de luto complicado; averiguar se há relação entre a funcionalidade familiar, satisfação quanto aos cuidados prestados ao ente querido, a sobrecarga do cuidador e o luto em familiares de pessoas em situação paliativa. Métodos: Estudo quantitativo, transversal, descritivo e correlacional, realizado numa amostra de 75 familiares de doentes em situação paliativa. Utilizou-se um Questionário Sociodemográfico; Escala de Apgar Familiar (Agostinho & Rebelo, 1988), Escala do Contexto do Luto (Cunha, 2014), Escala de Avaliação da Satisfação dos Familiares dos Doentes em Cuidados Paliativos - Escala FAMCARE (Almeida, 2012), Escala de Sobrecarga do Cuidador (Sequeira, 2010) e o Inventory of Complicated Grief (ICG) (Frade & Rocha, 2008). Resultados: Dos 75 participantes, apenas 24 (35.2%) que se encontravam pelo menos há 6 meses enlutados obtiveram uma pontuação superior a 30 no ICG, tradutora de vivência de luto complicado. Destes, 58.3% eram mulheres e 41.7% homens; na faixa etária =<49 anos (37.5%); com companheiro(a) (54.2%); 70.8% revelam funcionalidade familiar; 62.5% dos participantes perdeu um familiar direto, cujo falecimento ocorreu em 71.4% dos casos no domicílio; 83.3% dos familiares revelam sobrecarga com os cuidados; 29.2% revelam-se insatisfeitos com os cuidados prestados ao seu familiar. Conclusão: Os resultados revelam a necessidade de identificação dos fatores de risco no luto, de modo a mobilizarem-se os recursos para a promoção da vivência saudável do luto. A inserção profissional de assistentes sociais em instituições particulares de solidariedade social com resposta à senioridade: o caso do concelho da Covilhã

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a inserção das Técnicas de Serviço Social na área da senioridade. Como se trata de um estudo de caso restringe-se concelho da Covilhã. Por isso, foi realizado um estudo que tinha quatro vertentes: as Assistentes Sociais, as Instituições Particulares de Solidariedade Social e o concelho da Covilhã. No sentido de tomar mais consistente a pesquisa, foi desenvolvido um guião de entrevista e aplicado a várias profissionais inseridas nas Ipss com três valências (ERPI, SAD e CD) no concelho. Posteriormente foram analisados os resultados e comparados com dados recolhidos dos Censos, do Instituto nacional de Estatística e Pordata. O tema é bastante atual e pertinente, devido ao panorama nacional. Por um lado o aumento da Taxas de desemprego e emigração, e por outro o envelhecimento da população e o aumento dos casos sociais. Concluiu-se que, para as entrevistadas a maior dificuldade no desempenho das suas funções é a excessiva carga horária, os problemas diários associados aos idosos (Dependência física e mental, o Luto, condições desumanas) no entanto revelaram alguma facilidade e rapidez na obtenção do primeiro emprego.

Factors influencing the experience of the terminal phase and the grieving process: the primary caregiver’s perspective

Theoretical framework: The experience of the terminal phase and death by patients and caregivers is influenced by multiple factors. This study aimed at understanding this experience from the primary caregiver’s perspective. Objectives: To describe the factors that, from the primary caregiver’s perspective, influenced the experience of disease in the terminal phase and mourning for the death of a close person; To understand the influence of nurses’ conduct on the experience of disease in the terminal phase and mourning for the death of a close person from the primary caregiver’s perspective. Methodology: Qualitative descriptive exploratory study. Results: The following factors were valued: To Assume the Caregiver’s Role, To allow for the end-of-life/terminal phase to take place at home/near the family and Process of Care. Regarding the nurses’ conduct, the knowledge, communication and relationship established by nurses were also valued. Conclusion: In addition to expanding the implementation of specific palliative care teams, the acquisition and development of basic skills in this area by most health care professionals is essential.

Los homenajes a Eva Perón como prácticas de memoria en tiempos de la Resistencia peronista (1955-1963)

El objetivo de este artículo apunta a visualizar los homenajes efectuados en memoria de Eva Perón como instancias de participación en la Resistencia peronista (1955-1963), a partir del análisis de fuentes periodísticas, informes de inteligencia y entrevistas. La observación de este tipo de prácticas nos ha permitido analizar cómo se realizó el proceso de construcción de memoria durante esta etapa y sus anclajes materiales, el carácter religioso que impregnó a dichas prácticas, y cómo la imagen de Eva Perón se constituyó en una instancia de legitimación para la participación política femenina, aunque fueron atributos conservadores los que habilitaron dicha participación

Ring Out Your Dead : Distribution, form, and function of iron amulets in the late Iron Age grave fields of Lovö

The purpose of this study is to analyze the distribution, forms, and function(s) of iron amulets deposited in the late Iron Age gravefields of Lovö, with the goal of ascertaining how (and so far as possible why) these objects were utilized in rituals carried out during and after burials. Particular emphasis is given to re-interpreting the largest group of iron amulets, the iron amulet rings, in a more relational and practice-focused way than has heretofore been attempted. By framing burial analyses, questions of typology, and evidence of ritualized actions in comparison with what is known of other cult sites in Mälardalen specifically– and theorized about the cognitive landscape(s) of late Iron Age Scandinavia generally– a picture of iron amulets as inscribed objects made to act as catalytic, protective, and mediating agents is brought to light.
