Thin lamellae were cut from bulk single crystal BaTiO3 using a Focused Ion Beam Microscope. They were then removed and transferred onto single crystal MgO substrates, so that their functional properties could be measured independent of the original host bulk ferroelectric. The temperature dependence of the capacitance of these isolated single crystal films was found to be strongly bulk-like, demonstrating a sharp Curie anomaly, as well as Curie-Weiss behaviour. In addition, the sudden change in the remanent polarisation as a function of temperature at TC was characteristic of a first order phase change. The work represents a dramatic improvement on that previously published by M. M. Saad, P. Baxter, R. M. Bowman, J. M. Gregg, F. D. Morrison & J. F. Scott, J. Phys: Cond. Matt., 16 L451-L456 (2004), as critical shortcomings in the original specimen geometry, involving potential signal contributions from bulk BaTiO3, have now been obviated. That the functional properties of single crystal thin film lamellae are comparable to bulk, and not like those of conventionally deposited heteroegenous thin film systems, has therefore been confirmed.

An attempt has been made to unequivocally identify the influence that inhomogeneous strain fields, surrounding point defects, have on the functional properties of thin film ferroelectrics. Single crystal thin film lamellae of BaTiO3 have been integrated into capacitor structures, and the functional differences between those annealed in oxygen and those annealed in nitrogen have been mapped. Key features, such as the change in the paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition from first to second order were noted and found to be consistent with mean field modeling predictions for the effects of inhomogeneous strain. Switching characteristics appeared to be unaffected, suggesting that point defects have a low efficacy in domain wall pinning.

This article will be a reflective report, made by participants, facilitators and tutors on the first stage of a project entitled ‘Mentalentity’ which, had as it brief, the promotion of positive attitudes to mental health among men in rural areas. The arts ‘product’ is a 25 minute film made by a group of men in South Armagh using an action learning and action research approach.. The project is a paradigm of ‘action research’ using arts based methods also in that none of the men had ever been involved in filmmaking and had to learn a wide range of skills to convert the knowledge they were reflecting on into an arts product; avoiding the sensationalising of a very complex subject and, equally, the earnestness sometimes associated with ‘awareness raising’ projects. The project is funded by a statutory agency, the Southern Investing for Health Partnership, and is being implemented by two voluntary groups, Men Aware (South Armagh) and a pan-disability group, Out and About, working with Queen’s University, School of Education, Open Learning Programme, which facilitated and accredited the project and the Nerve Centre, an internationally renowned independent arts organisation which specialises in music, multimedia, and the moving image. The article will relate the project to a range of arts based projects undertaken by the contributors and will contextualize this work within the research in such fields as inclusive participative and emancipatory research, qualitative research methodologies, active learning pedagogy, arts based pedagogy, Social/ Relational model disability and cutting edge ‘psychosocial’ models in mental health.

High levels of ozone (typically 850 ppm) are readily decomposed by semiconductor photocatalysis, using a thin film of the semiconductor titanium dioxide (Degussa P25 TiO2) cast on a glass tube, and UVA light, i.e. light of energy greater than that of the bandgap of the semiconductor (ultra-bandgap light); in the absence of this light the thermal decomposition of ozone is relatively slow. The semiconductor films show no evidence of chemical or photochemical wear with repeated use. At high levels of ozone, i.e. 100 ppm less than or equal to [O-3] less than or equal to 1400 ppm, the initial rate of ozone decomposition by semiconductor photocatalysis is independent of [O-3], whereas, at lower ozone concentrations, i.e. 5 ppm less than or equal to [O-3] less than or equal to 100 ppm, the initial rate of ozone photodestruction decreases in a smooth, but non-linear, manner with decreasing [O-3]. The kinetics of ozone photodecomposition fit a Langmuir-Hinshelwood type kinetic equation and the possible mechanistic implications of these results are briefly discussed. Different plasticizers, including phosphate-, phthalate-and adipate-based types were used in the creation of a range of colorimetric plastic film sensors for CO2, The different types of plasticizer used in the formulation of a colorimetric plastic film sensor for CO2 affect the response and recovery times of the sensor differently, An effective plasticizer was taken as one that decreased the response and recovery times of the final film sensor when exposed to an alternating atmosphere of 0-5% CO2. On this basis, the most efficient plasticizers appeared to be phosphate-based, followed by phthalate- and adipate-based plasticizers, This trend appears to reflect the degree of the polymer-plasticizer compatibility. Increasing the amount of plasticizer in the film formulation decreased the response and recovery times of the sensor dramatically, The sensitivity of the film sensor towards CO2 appears to decrease with increasing plasticizer effectiveness; thus, the general order of film CO2 sensitivity with respect to plasticizer type was found to be adipate > phthalate > phosphate. In general, the response of the optical films towards CO2 was found to be temperature sensitive [typically, Delta H = -(44-55) kJ mol(-1)], The phosphate-based plasticized films appear to be less temperature sensitive than the other plasticized films, and 2-ethylhexyl diphenylphosphate appears particularly effective in this respect (Delta H = -18.5 kJ mol(-1)).

The equilibrium responses of three new colorimetric plastic film sensors for CO2 as a function of % CO2 and temperature are described. The results fit a model in which there is a 1:1 equilibrium reaction between the deprotonated form of the dye (present in the film as an ion pair) and CO2. The 0-50% and 0-90% response and recovery times of each of these films when exposed to an alternating atmosphere of air and 5% CO2 are determined and in two cases are typically less than 3 s. The shelf life of the films is long (many months); however, prolonged use of the films leads to the permanent generation of the protonated form of the dye over a period of 20-100 h. A possible cause of this latter effect is discussed.
