On the invariant representation of spin tensors with applications

The invariant representation of the spin tensor defined as the rotation rate of a principal triad for a symmetric and non-degenerate tensor is derived on the basis of the general solution of a linear tensorial equation. The result can be naturally specified to study the. spin of the stretch tensors and to investigate the relations between various rotation rate tensors encountered frequently in modern continuum mechanics. A remarkable formula which relates the generalized stress conjugate to the generalized strain in Hill's sense. to Cauchy stress, is obtained in invariant form through the work conjugate principle. Particularly, a detailed discussion on the time rate of logarithmic strain and its conjugate stress is made as the principal axes of strain arc not fixed during deformation.

Ontologies for representation of folk song metadata

The digital management of collections in museums, archives, libraries and galleries is an increasingly important part of cultural heritage studies. This paper describes a representation for folk song metadata, based on the Web Ontology Language (OWL) implementation of the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model. The OWL representation facilitates encoding and reasoning over a genre ontology, while the CIDOC model enables a representation of complex spatial containment and proximity relations among geographic regions. It is shown how complex queries of folk song metadata, relying on inference and not only retrieval, can be expressed in OWL and solved using a description logic reasoner.

Evaluation of Several Commercial Algicides for Control of Odor-producing Cyanobacteria

The production of certain odorous metabolites is an undesirable attribute of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) growth in aquaculture ponds [e.g., channel catfish(Ictalurus punctatus)] and in drinking water reservoirs. The most common odorous compounds encountered in catfish aquaculture are geosmin (trans-1,10-dimethyltrans-9-decalol) and 2-methylisoborneol(exo-1,2,7,7-tetramethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-ol). These compounds are also frequently encountered worldwide in reservoirs and aqueducts used for municipal drinking water systems(Schrader et al. 2002). In this study, several algicides were evaluated using a rapid bioassay to determine their effectiveness in controlling the MIB-producing cyanobacterium Oscillatoria perornata from a west Mississippi catfish pond and the MIBproducing Pseudanabaena sp. (strain LW397) from Lake Whitehurst, Virginia, used as a city water supply reservoir. The cyanobacterium Oscillatoria agardhii , not a MIB-producer, and the green alga Selenastrum capricornutum , found in catfish ponds in the southeastern United States, were included in the bioassay to help determine potential broad-spectrum toxicity of the commercial products. Association analyses of DNA polymorphisms in bovine SREBP-1, LXRα,FADS1 genes with fatty acid composition in Canadian commercial crossbred beef steers

Two previously reported DNA polymorphisms of sterol regulatory element binding transcription factor 1 (SREBP1) and liver X receptor alpha (LXRα) and two DNA polymorphisms of fatty acid desaturase 1 (FADS1) were evaluated for associations with fatty acids in brisket adipose tissue of Canadian cross-bred beef steers. The polymorphism of 84 bp insert/deletion in intron 5 of SREBP1 was significantly associated with the concentration of 9c C17:1 (P=0.013). The G>A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the exon 4 of LXRα gene was associated with the concentration of 9c, 11t C18:2 (P=0.04), sum of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) (P=0.025) and 11c C20:1(P=0.042). Two DNA polymorphisms in the promoter region of FADS1, deletion/insertion of ->GTG in rs133053720 and SNP A>G in rs42187276, were significantly associated with concentrations of C17:0 iso, C17:0 ai, total branched chain fatty acids (BFA), 12t C18:1, 13t/14t C18:1, 15t C18:1, and 13c C18:1 (P<0.05). Further studies are needed to validate the associations and to delineate the roles of the gene polymorphisms in determining the fatty acid composition in beef tissues.
