The place and meaning of physical activity, physical education, and physical culture in the lives of young people living in rural Queensland

Young people living in rural and regional areas are often reported as being less physically active than are young people living elsewhere. An understanding of this phenomenon will inform policies and strategies to address this finding. One source of valuable information is a qualitative understanding of how social relations and cultural meanings influence young people's opportunities and choices in relation to physical activity as told by young people themselves. The study reported here forms a component of a national project to gain insights into young people's engagement with physical activity and physical culture. Data has been collected for over two years with 15 young people residing in rural areas throughout Queensland, using semi- structured interviews. This paper reports the findings of the research. Investigating the dilemmas of ethical social research

The author’s work with a university ethics committee and field research in Pacific New Caledonia is used as a basis to problematise the biomedical research models used by universities in Australia for assessing social research as ethical. The article explores how culturally specific Western emotional bases for ethical decisions are often unexamined. It expresses concerns about gaps in biomedical models by linking the author’s description of field interactions with research participants to debates about the creation of knowledge.

The effect of local galaxy surface density on star formation for HI selected galaxies

We present the result of investigations into two theories to explain the star formation rate (SFR)-density relationship. For regions of high galaxy density, either there are fewer star-forming galaxies or galaxies capable of forming stars are present but some physical process is suppressing their star formation. We use H I Parkes All-Sky Survey's (HIPASS) HI detected galaxies and infrared and radio fluxes to investigate SFRs and efficiencies with respect to local surface density. For nearby (vel < 10 000 km s(-1)) H I galaxies, we find a strong correlation between H I mass and SFR. The number of H I galaxies decreases with increasing local surface density. For H I galaxies (1000 < vel < 6000 km s(-1)), there is no significant change in the SFR or the efficiency of star formation with respect to local surface density. We conclude that the SFR-density relation is due to a decrease in the number of H I star-forming galaxies in regions of high galaxy density and not to the suppression of star formation.
