Atomically resolved scanning tunneling microscopy was conducted on cleaved single crystals of the cubic perovskite Pr0.68Pb0.32MnO3.Several different surface configurations could be resolved including a frequent square arrangement with atomic distances in excellent agreement to the bulk lattice constant of the cubic structure. We also observed stripe formation and a surface reconstruction. The latter is likely related to a polar rare earth-oxygen terminated surface. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted into the atmosphere from natural and anthropogenic sources, vegetation being the dominant source on a global scale. Some of these reactive compounds are deemed major contributors or inhibitors to aerosol particle formation and growth, thus making VOC measurements essential for current climate change research. This thesis discusses ecosystem scale VOC fluxes measured above a boreal Scots pine dominated forest in southern Finland. The flux measurements were performed using the micrometeorological disjunct eddy covariance (DEC) method combined with proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS), which is an online technique for measuring VOC concentrations. The measurement, calibration, and calculation procedures developed in this work proved to be well suited to long-term VOC concentration and flux measurements with PTR-MS. A new averaging approach based on running averaged covariance functions improved the determination of the lag time between wind and concentration measurements, which is a common challenge in DEC when measuring fluxes near the detection limit. The ecosystem scale emissions of methanol, acetaldehyde, and acetone were substantial. These three oxygenated VOCs made up about half of the total emissions, with the rest comprised of monoterpenes. Contrary to the traditional assumption that monoterpene emissions from Scots pine originate mainly as evaporation from specialized storage pools, the DEC measurements indicated a significant contribution from de novo biosynthesis to the ecosystem scale monoterpene emissions. This thesis offers practical guidelines for long-term DEC measurements with PTR-MS. In particular, the new averaging approach to the lag time determination seems useful in the automation of DEC flux calculations. Seasonal variation in the monoterpene biosynthesis and the detailed structure of a revised hybrid algorithm, describing both de novo and pool emissions, should be determined in further studies to improve biological realism in the modelling of monoterpene emissions from Scots pine forests. The increasing number of DEC measurements of oxygenated VOCs will probably enable better estimates of the role of these compounds in plant physiology and tropospheric chemistry. Nonconventional heptacoordination in combination with efficient magnetic exchange coupling is shown to yield a 1-D heteronuclear {(FeNbIV)-Nb-II} compound with remarkable magnetic features when compared to other Fe(II)-based single chain magnets (SCM). Cyano-bridged heterometallic {3d-4d} and {3d-5d} chains are formed upon assembling Fe(II) bearing a pentadentate macrocycle as the blocking ligand with octacyano metallates, [M(CN)(8)](4-) (M = Nb-IV, Mo-IV, W-IV.) X-ray diffraction (single-crystal and powder) measurements reveal that the [{(H2O)Fe(L-1)}{M(CN)(8)}{Fe(L-1)}](infinity) architectures consist of isomorphous 1-D polymeric structures based on the alternation of {Fe(L-1)}(2+) and {M(CN)(8)}(4-) units (L-1 stands for the pentadentate macrocycle). Analysis of the magnetic susceptibility behavior revealed cyano-bridged {Fe-Nb} exchange interaction to be antiferromagnetic with J = -20 cm(-1) deduced from fitting an Ising model taking into account the noncollinear spin arrangement. For this ferrimagnetic chain a slow relaxation of its magnetization is observed at low temperature revealing a SCM behavior with Delta/k(B) = 74 K and tau(0) = 4.6 x 10(-11) s. The M versus H behavior exhibits a hysteresis loop with a coercive field of 4 kOe at 1 K and reveals at 380 mK magnetic avalanche processes, i.e., abrupt reversals in magnetization as H is varied. The origin of these characteristics is attributed to the combination of efficient {Fe-Nb} exchange interaction and significant anisotropy of the {Fe(L-1)) unit. High field EPR and magnetization experiments have revealed for the parent compound [Fe(L-1)(H2O)(2)]Cl-2 a negative zero field splitting parameter of D approximate to -17 cm(-1). The crystal structure, magnetic behavior, and Mossbauer data for [Fe(L-1)(H2O)(2)]Cl-2 are also reported.

In multiwall carbon nanotube (MWNT)-polystyrene (PS) composites, a weak temperature dependence of conductivity has been observed at a percolation threshold of 0.4 wt %. The power law [sigma(T)proportional to T-0.3] behavior indicates metallic-like behavior, unlike the usual activated transport for systems near the percolation threshold. The low field positive magnetoconductance follows H-2 dependence, due to the weak localization in disordered metallic systems. The marginal metallic nature of MWNT-PS at percolation threshold is further verified from the negligible frequency dependence of conductivity, in the temperature range of 300 to 5 K. We report magnetization and magnetoresistance studies of the geometrically frustrated spinel compound LiMn2O4 near its charge ordering temperature. The effect of a 7 T magnetic field is to very slightly shift the transition in the resistivity to lower temperatures resulting in large negative magnetoresistance with significant hysteresis. This hysteresis is not reflected in the magnetization. These observations are compared with what is found in the colossal magnetoresistance and charge ordering perovskite manganese oxides. The manner in which geometric frustration influences the coupling of charge and spin degrees of freedom is examined.

The nature of the low-temperature magnetic state of polycrystalline La0.67Ca0.33Mn0.9Fe0.1O3 has been studied by magnetization, neutron diffraction, and neutron depolarization measurements. Neutron depolarization measurements indicate the existence of ferromagnetic domains with low net magnetic moments below 108 K. The substitution of Mn3+ by Fe3+ reduces the number of available hopping sites for the Mn e(g) (up) electron and suppresses the double exchange, resulting in the reduction of ferromagnetic exchange. The competition between the ferromagnetic double-exchange interactions and the coexisting antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions and its randomness due to random substitutions of Mn3+ with Fe3+ drive the system into a randomly canted ferromagnetic state at low temperatures.

The formation of crystalline diamond films from amorphous diamond-like carbon films by pulsed laser irradiation with a 300 μs non-Q-switched Nd:YAG laser has been established by a combined study of transmission electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrical resistivity. The films have been prepared by glow discharge decomposition of a mixture of propane, n-butane, and hydrogen in a rf plasma operating at a frequency of 13.56 MHz. Prior to laser irradiation, the films have been found to be amorphous by transmission electron microscope studies. After irradiation, the electron diffraction patterns clearly point out the formation of cubic diamond structure with a lattice spacing of 3.555 Å. However, the close similarity between diamond and graphite electron diffraction patterns could sometimes be misleading regarding the formation of a diamond structure, and hence, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies have been carried out to confirm the results. A chemical shift in the C 1s core level binding energies towards higher values, viz., from 286.5 to 287.8 eV after laser irradiation, and a high electrical resistivity >1013 Ω cm are consistent with the growth of diamond structure. This novel "low-temperature, low-pressure" synthesis of diamond films offers enormous potential in terms of device compatibility with other solid-state devices.

A novel, cost effective,environment-friendly and energetically beneficial alternative method for the synthesis of giant dielectric pseudo-perovskite material CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) is presented. The method involved auto-combustion of an aqueous precursor solution in oxygen atmosphere with the help of external fuels and is capable of producing high amount of CCTO at ultra-low temperature, in the combustion residue itself. The amount of phase generated was observed to be highly dependent on the combustion process i.e. on the nature and amount of external-fuels added for combustion. Two successful fuel combinations capable of producing reasonably higher amount of the desired compound were investigated. On a structural characterization grain size was observed to decrease drastically to nano-dimension compared to submicron-size that was obtained in a traditional sol-gel combustion and subsequent cacination method. Therefore, the method reported can produce nano-crystalline CaCu3Ti4O12 ceramic matrix at an ultra-low temperature and is expected to be applicable for other multifunctional perovskite oxide materials.

Traumatic insults to the central nervous system are frequently followed by profound and irreversible neuronal loss as well as the inability of the damaged neurons to regenerate. One of the major therapeutic challenges is to increase the amount of surviving neurons after trauma. Thus it is crucial to understand how injury affects neuronal responses and which conditions are optimal for survival to prevent neuronal loss. During development neuronal survival is thought to be dependent on the competition for the availability of survival-promoting molecules called neurotrophic factors. Much less is known on the survival mechanisms of mature neurons under traumatic conditions. Increasing amount of evidence points towards the possibility that after injury neuronal responses might aquire some developmental characteristics. One of the important examples is the change in the responses to the neurotransmitter GABA: it is inhibitory in the intact mature neurons, but can induce excitation during development and after trauma. An important step in the maturation of GABAergic transmission in the CNS is the developmental shift in the action of GABAA receptor from depolarization in immature neurons to hyperpolarization in mature neurons. GABAA-mediated responses are tightly linked to the homeostasis of the chloride anion (Cl-), which in neurons is mainly regulated by Na+-K+-2Cl- cotransporter NKCC1 and K+-Cl- cotransporter KCC2. Trauma-induced functional downregulation of KCC2 promotes a shift from hyperpolarizing GABAA-mediated responses to depolarizing. Other important consequences of neuronal trauma are the emergence of dependency of central neurons on brain-derived neuro¬trophic factor (BDNF) for survival, as well as the upregulation of neurotrophin receptor p75NTR. Our aim was to answer the question whether these post-traumatic events are interrelated, and whether the regulation of BDNF and KCC2 expression is different under traumatic conditions and in intact neurons. To study responses of injured mature central neurons, we used an in vitro and in vivo axotomy models. For in vitro studies, we lesioned organotypic hippocampal slices between CA3 and CA1 regions, which resulted in selective axotomy of the CA3 neurons and denervation of the CA1 neurons. Some experiments were repeated in vivo by lesioning the neurons of the corticospinal tract at the internal capsule level, or by lesioning spinal motoneurons at the ventral root. We show that intact mature neurons do not require BDNF for survival, whereas in axotomized neurons apoptosis is induced upon BDNF deprivation. We further show that post-traumatic dependency on BDNF is mediated by injury-induced upregulation of p75NTR. Post-traumatic increase in p75NTR is induced by GABAA-mediated depolarization, consequent opening of voltage-gated Ca2+ channels, and the activation of Rho kinase ROCK. Thus, post-traumatic KCC2 downregulation leads to the dependency on BDNF through the induction of p75NTR upregulation. Neurons that survive after axotomy over longer period of time lose BDNF dependency and regain normal KCC2 levels. This phenomenon is promoted by BDNF itself, since after axotomy contrary to normal conditions KCC2 is upregulated by BDNF. The developmentally important thyroid hormone thyroxin regulates BDNF expression during development. We show that in mature intact neurons thyroxin downregulates BDNF, whereas after axotomy thyroxin upregulates BDNF. The elevation of BDNF expression by thyroxin promoted survival of injured neurons. In addition, thyroxin also enhanced axonal regeneration and promoted the regaining of normal levels of KCC2. Thus we show that this hormone acts at several levels on the axotomy-initiated chain of events described in the present work, and could be a potential therapeutic agent for the injured neurons. We have also characterized a previously unknown downregulatory interaction between thyroxin and KCC2 in intact neurons. In conclusion, we identified several important interactions at the neurotrophin-protein and hormone-neurotrophin level that acquire immature-like characteristics after axotomy and elucidated an important part of the mechanism by which axotomy leads to the requirement of BDNF trophic support. Based on these findings, we propose a new potential therapeutic strategy where developmentally crucial agents could be used to enhance survival and regeneration of axotomized mature central neurons.

Electrical and magnetic properties of several oxide systems of K2NiF4 structure have been compared to those of the corresponding perovskites. Members of the La1−xSr1+xCoO4 system are all semiconductors with a high activation energy for conduction unlike La1−xSrxCoO3 (x ≥ 0.3) which is metallic; the latter oxides are ferromagnetic. La0.5Sr1.5CoO4 shows a magnetization of 0.5 μB at 0 K (compared to 1.5 μB of La0.5Sr0.5CoO3), but the high-temperature susceptibilities of the two systems are comparable. In SrO · (La0.5Sr0.5MnO3)n, both magnetization and electrical conductivity increase with the increase in n approaching the value of the perovskite La0.5Sr0.5MnO3. LaSrMn0.5Ni0.5(Co0.5)O4 shows no evidence of long-range ferromagnetic ordering unlike the perovskite LaMn0.5Ni0.5(Co0.5)O3; high-temperature susceptibility behavior of these two insulating systems is, however, similar. LaSr1−xBaxNiO4 exhibits high electrical resistivity with the resistivity increasing proportionately with the magnetic susceptibility (note that LaNiO3 is a Pauli-paramagnetic metal). High-temperature susceptibility of LaSrNiO4 and LaNiO3 are comparable. Susceptibility measurements show no evidence for long-range ordering in LaSrFe1−xNixO4 unlike in LaFe1−xNixO3 (x ≤ 0.35) and the electrical resistivity of the former is considerably higher. Electrical resistivity of Sr2RuO4 is more than an order of magnitude higher than that of SrRuO3. Some generalizations of the properties of two- and three-dimensional oxide systems have emerged from these experimental observations.

X.p.s. studies on the adsorption of oxygen on a barium-covered Pb surface have shown the presence of two distinct types of oxygen species: oxidic, O2–, and the peroxo-like O2–2(ads), and the surface has been identified as a composite of PbO and BaPbO3. On a barium pre-covered surface, the sticking probability of oxygen on Pb is increased. The O2–(ads) species preferentially reacts with HCl forming PbCl2(ads)via proton abstraction, whereas O2–2(ads) is not reactive with HCl vapour. On the Pb surface, the PbCl2 overlayer reacts with excess HCl, forming a volatile compound believed to be Pb(ClHCl)2, while in the presence of coadsorbed barium, the stability of PbCl2 is increased and the activation energy for the reaction: PbCl2(ads)+ 2HCl(g) Pb(ClHCl)2(g) is increased. Stronger intermetallic interaction is suggested to be the reason for higher PbCl2 stability.

p-aminobenzoate could be intercalated into the anionic clay, Ni3Zn2(OH)(8)(OAc)(2)center dot 2H(2)O at a high pH (similar to 10). When the pH was reduced to similar to 7 while washing colloidal dispersion due to delamination was observed. The development of partial positive charge on the amine end of the intercalated anion causes repulsion between the layers leading to delamination and colloidal dispersion of monolayers in water. The layers could be restacked from the colloid to form the parent solid either by increasing the pH or by evaporation.

Static magnetization for single crystals of insulating Nd0.85Pb0.15MnO3 and marginally conducting Nd0.70Pb0.30MnO3 has been studied around the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition temperature T-C. Results of measurements carried out in the critical range vertical bar(T - T-C)/T-C vertical bar <= 0.1 are reported. Critical exponents beta and gamma for the thermal behaviour of magnetization and susceptibility have been obtained both by modified Arrott plots and the Kouvel-Fisher method. The exponent delta independently obtained from the critical isotherm was found to satisfy the Widom scaling relation delta = gamma/beta + 1. For both compositions the values of exponents are consistent with those expected for isotropic magnets belonging to the Heisenberg universality class with short-range exchange in three dimensions. Correspondingly, the specific heat displays only a cusp-like anomaly at the critical temperature of these crystals which is consistent with an exponent alpha < 0. The results show that the ferromagnetic ordering transition in Nd1-xPbxMnO3 in the composition range 0.15 <= x <= 0.40 is continuous. This mixed-valent manganite displays the conventional properties of a Heisenberg-like ferromagnet, irrespective of the differing transport properties and in spite of low ordering temperatures T-C = 109 and 147.2 K for x = 0.15 and 0.30, respectively.
