Metabolism, in part, is regulated by the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs). The PPARs act as nutritional lipid sensors and three mammalian PPAR subtypes designated PPARalpha (NR1C1), PPARgamma (NR1C3) and PPARdelta (NR1C2) have been identified. This subgroup of nuclear hormone receptors binds DNA and controls gene expression at the nexus of pathways that regulate lipid and glucose homeostasis, energy storage and expenditure in an organ-specific manner. Recent evidence has demonstrated activation of PPARdelta in the major mass peripheral tissue (ie, adipose and skeletal muscle). It enhances glucose tolerance, insulin-stimulated glucose disposal, lipid catabolism, energy expenditure, cholesterol efflux and oxygen consumption. These effects positively influence the blood-lipid profile. Furthermore, PPARdelta activation produces a predominant type I/slow twitch/oxidative muscle fiber phenotype that leads to increased endurance, insulin sensitivity and resistance to obesity. PPARdelta has rapidly emerged as a potential target in the battle against dyslipidemia, insulin insensitivity, type II diabetes and obesity, with therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of cardiovascular disease risk factors. GW-501516 is currently undergoing phase II safety and efficacy trials in human volunteers for the treatment of dyslipidemia. The outcome of these clinical trials are eagerly awaited against a background of conflicting reports about cancer risks in genetically predisposed animal models. This review focuses on the potential pharmacological utility of selective PPARdelta agonists in the context of risk factors associated with metabolic and cardiovascular disease.

Orphan nuclear receptors: therapeutic opportunities in skeletal muscle. Am J Physiol Cell Physiol 291: C203-C217, 2006; doi: 10.1152/ajpcell. 00476.2005.-Nuclear hormone receptors (NRs) are ligand-dependent transcription factors that bind DNA and translate physiological signals into gene regulation. The therapeutic utility of NRs is underscored by the diversity of drugs created to manage dysfunctional hormone signaling in the context of reproductive biology, inflammation, dermatology, cancer, and metabolic disease. For example, drugs that target nuclear receptors generate over $10 billion in annual sales. Almost two decades ago, gene products were identified that belonged to the NR superfamily on the basis of DNA and protein sequence identity. However, the endogenous and synthetic small molecules that modulate their action were not known, and they were denoted orphan NRs. Many of the remaining orphan NRs are highly enriched in energy-demanding major mass tissues, including skeletal muscle, brown and white adipose, brain, liver, and kidney. This review focuses on recently adopted and orphan NR function in skeletal muscle, a tissue that accounts for similar to 35% of the total body mass and energy expenditure, and is a major site of fatty acid and glucose utilization. Moreover, this lean tissue is involved in cholesterol efflux and secretes that control energy expenditure and adiposity. Consequently, muscle has a significant role in insulin sensitivity, the blood lipid profile, and energy balance. Accordingly, skeletal muscle plays a considerable role in the progression of dyslipidemia, diabetes, and obesity. These are risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which is the the foremost cause of global mortality (> 16.7 million deaths in 2003). Therefore, it is not surprising that orphan NRs and skeletal muscle are emerging as therapeutic candidates in the battle against dyslipidemia, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease.

Aim: To determine the impact of periodontitis on oxidative/inflammatory status and diabetes control in Type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods: A comparative study of 20 Type 2 diabetes patients with periodontitis [body mass index (BMI) 31+5], 20-age/gender-matched, non-periodontitis Type 2 diabetes controls (BMI 29+6) and 20 non-diabetes periodontitis controls (BMI 25+4) had periodontal examinations and fasting blood samples collected. Oxidative stress was determined by plasma small molecule antioxidant capacity (pSMAC) and protein carbonyl levels; inflammatory status by total/differential leucocytes, fibrinogen and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP); diabetes status by fasting glucose, HbA1c, lipid profile, insulin resistance and secretion. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS. Results: pSMAC was lower (p=0.03) and protein carbonyls higher (p=0.007) in Type 2 diabetes patients with periodontitis compared with those without periodontitis. Periodontitis was associated with significantly higher HbA1c (p=0.002) and fasting glucose levels (p=0.04) and with lower ß-cell function (HOMA-ß; p=0.01) in diabetes patients. Periodontitis had little effect on inflammatory markers or lipid profiles, but Type 2 diabetes patients with periodontitis had higher levels of hsCRP than those without diabetes (p=0.004) and the lowest levels of HDL-cholesterol of all groups. Conclusion: Periodontitis is associated with increased oxidative stress and compromised glycaemic control in Type 2 diabetes patients.

Full editorial: A recent study evaluating the long-term (2 yr) weight reducing efficacy of different types of diets – high or low in carbohydrates (CHOs), protein or fat - confirmed that it is calorie deficit not dietary composition that determines the loss and maintenance of body weight.1 Is there any advantage in following a specific weight loss diet? Short-term use of nutritionally complete commercially available (very) low calorie diets has benefited people with diabetes when  supported by education programmes.2 Initial weight loss has been encouraging with some fad diets eg the Atkins and the South Beach diets, but these diets are difficult to maintain and there are safety issues regarding their short- and long-term use – especially in people with diabetes.3 The types of macronutrients consumed can have a considerable impact on glycaemic control and energy metabolism. Although a low CHO diet additionally enhances initial weight loss by reducing cellular water content, if fat is not proportionally reduced the diet may not benefit the lipid profile for vascular disease risk. High fat and high protein diets – which are simultaneously low in CHOs – increase vulnerability to hypoglycaemia in people taking insulin secretagogues or on insulin therapy, and may promote excess fat metabolism and ketogenesis, particularly in people vulnerable to lack of insulin. Very low protein diets are not recommended as lean body mass tends to be reduced in diabetes. Altering the macronutrient balance has implications for the micronutrient mix: deficiencies are higher if more foods are excluded and conversely specific micronutrient excess can occur with some fad diets. The altered nutrient mix affects intestinal fauna and flora, and gut motility and glycaemic control are influenced by the quantity and type of fibre consumed. Support programmes help individuals achieve long term weight loss and there is mounting evidence that community schemes which educate and promote lifestyle changes may stem the rising tide of obesity and consequent type 2 diabetes.4 Consuming smaller portions of a balanced diet (and adjusting antidiabetic medications accordingly) will create an energy deficit to promote healthy weight loss. Increased movement/exercise will enhance this energy deficit. Knowledge (eg 1g fat has 2.25 times more energy than 1g CHO) allows sensible food choices and compensation for inclusion of small volumes of  ‘naughty but nice’ foods. Metformin is an anti-hyperglycaemic agent widely used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It counters insulin resistance through insulin-dependent and -independent effects on cellular nutrient and energy metabolism, improving glycaemic control without weight gain and without increasing the risk of hypoglycaemia. Metformin can also benefit several risk factors for vascular disease independently of glycaemic control. In subjects with metabolic syndrome, metformin improves prognosis. It decreases progression of impaired glucose tolerance to type 2 diabetes, assists weight reduction especially in conjunction with lifestyle management and exerts other potentially favourable cardiovascular effects. For example, metformin can modestly improve the lipid profile in some dyslipidaemic individuals, reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines and monocyte adhesion molecules and decrease advanced glycation end products. Metformin can also improve parameters of endothelial function in the macro- and micro-vasculature, indicating lower athero-thrombotic risk, but it does not appear to reduce blood pressure. In normoglycaemic individuals with risk factors for diabetes and in women with polycystic ovary syndrome there is evidence that metformin can defer or prevent the development of diabetes. Thus, metformin offers beneficial effects to delay the onset and reverse or reduce the progression of many of the metabolic features and cardiovascular risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome.

Cuban Americans, a minority Hispanic subgroup, have a high prevalence of type 2 diabetes. Persons with diabetes experience a higher rate of coronary heart disease (CHD) compared to those without diabetes. The objectives of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK) are to investigate the risk factors of CHD and the etiology of diabetes among diabetics of minority ethnic populations. No information is available on the etiology of CHD risks for Cuban Americans. ^ This cross-sectional study compared Cuban Americans with (N = 79) and without (N = 80) type 2 diabetes residing in South Florida. Data on risk factors of CHD and type 2 diabetes were collected using sociodemographics, smoking habit, Rose Angina, Modifiable Activity, and Willet's food frequency questionnaires. Anthropometrics and blood pressure (BP) were recorded. Glucose, glycated hemoglobin, lipid profile, homocysteine, and C-reactive protein were assessed in fasting blood. ^ Diabetics reported a significantly higher rate of angina symptoms than non-diabetics (P = 0.008). After adjusting for age and gender, diabetics had significantly (P < 0.001) larger waist circumference and higher systolic BP than non-diabetics. There was no significant difference in major nutrient intakes between the groups. One quarter of subjects, both diabetics and non-diabetics, exceeded the intake of percent calories from total fat and almost 60% had cholesterol intake >200 mg/d and more than 60% had fiber intake <20 gm/d. The pattern of physical activity did not differ between groups though, it was much below the recommended level. After adjusting for age and gender, diabetics had significantly (P < 0.001) higher levels of blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, triglycerides, and homocysteine than non-diabetics. In contrast, diabetics had significantly (P < 0.01) lower levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). ^ Multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that increasing age, male gender, large waist circumference, lack of acculturation, and high levels of triglycerides were independent risk factors of type 2 diabetes. In contrast, moderate alcohol consumption conferred protection against diabetes. ^ The study identified several risk factors of CHD and diabetes among Cuban Americans. Health care providers are encouraged to practice ethno-specific preventive measures to lower the burden of CHD and diabetes in Cuban Americans. ^

The objective of this research was to evaluate the influence of the supply of five types of native and exotic cacti Brazilian semiarid northeast on the sensory characteristics of milk of Saanen goats. Five multiparous goats were used with nine weeks of lactation, average live weight of 50 kg ± 4 kg., confined and distributed in a Latin square design 5 x 5 with five experimental diets and five periods. Each period lasted 17 days, with 10 days of adaptation to the diets of the animals and seven days for the data collection. The treatments were defined based on dry matter consisted of: 47.33 to 50.12% of a cactus (“Xiquexique”, “Mandacaru”, “Facheiro” or two species of forage cactus “Miúda” or “Orelha de Elefante Mexicana”) more 18.78 to 19.79% hay of plant “Sabiá” and 31.10 to 32.89% of concentrate. There was not effect of the experimental diets in the physical and chemical composition of milk for fat, total solids and salts, which showed mean values of 3.24%; 11.30% and 0.66%, respectively. However the protein, lactose, nonfat dry extract and freezing point were affected by diets. In the profile of fatty acids was higher concentration of fatty short and medium chain fatty acids, however, there were not changes between treatments, except for the butyric acid (C4:0), with mean values of 4.24% (“Orelha de Elefante Mexicana”) to 6.05% (“Facheiro”). The diets also did not provide sensory changes in milk for the parameters: odor, flavor, aftertaste and overall assessment. The use of the five cactus in the diet of dairy goats do not influence the sensory characteristics and lipid profile of milk. The physical and chemical composition of milk was showed within the minimum requirements of current legislation, except for nonfat dry extract and freezing point.

Schizophrenia is a severe and persistent mental illness; diagnosis occurs mainly during adolescence. The pharmacological treatment is done with typical and atypical antipsychotics. Atypical have the advantage of reduced extrapyramidal effects, which make them promising for the treatment of schizophrenia, furthermore, they have shown significant metabolic and hormonal changes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of atypical antipsychotics, olanzapine and risperidone on the quality of life and on their adverse effects in schizophrenic patients. For this we analyzed the quality of life of patients with implementation of EuroQol-5D-3L instrument and performing biochemical and hormonal tests, blood pressure measurement, and measurement of anthropometric indices, besides the application of Ugvalg scales for Kliniske Undersgelser (UKU) and Simpson-Angus, who evaluated the side effects caused by drugs. Data were analyzed using the Student t test and chi-square test, with 5% significance level. The results showed that the EuroQol the antipsychotic olanzapine causes significant losses associated with personal care (p <0.001). Comparing the two groups of antipsychotics, the average years of quality-adjusted life, known per QALY was favorable for the risperidone group (p <0.032). The results of olanzapine and risperidone groups were compared. In terms of socioeconomic, it was observed that men used, the prevalent form, olanzapine (p <0.008); this same group showed the following results significantly unfavorable, related to anthropometric variables: waist circumference (p <0.01), hip circumference (p <0.02), weight (p <0.02) and blood pressure (p <0.04). The biochemical and hormonal analyzes showed that olanzapine resulted in losses related to the following variables: triglycerides (p <0.04), HDL cholesterol in men (p < 0.02) and cortisol (p < 0.01). In risperidone users, the only negative value was prolactin (p < 0.04). Regarding the analysis of the Simpson-Angus scale, the group treated with olanzapine was handicapped because the average total scores for olanzapine was 0.38, while for risperidone was 0.11 (p < 0.02). In the UKU scale, the following results were obtained also unfavorable for the olanzapine group: fatigue (P <0.02), dystonia (p <0.01) and tremor (p <0.03). According to the UKU scale, the side effects present in the risperidone group included: gynecomastia (p <0.01), ejaculatory dysfunction (p <0.02) and erectile dysfunction (p <0.02). It was concluded that olanzapine users had the worst score of quality of life, higher metabolic risks associated with overweight and inadequate lipid profile and greater tendency to extrapyramidal manifestations. However, risperidone users were more likely to adverse reactions due to hormonal changes.

L’obésité est un problème de santé publique reconnu. Dans la dernière décennie l’obésité abdominale (OA) a été considérée comme une maladie métabolique qui contribue davantage au risque de diabète et de maladies cardiovasculaires que l’obésité générale définie par l’indice de masse corporelle. Toutefois, dans les populations d’origine africaine, la relation entre l’OA et les autres biomarqueurs de risque cardiométabolique (RCM) demeure obscure à cause du manque d’études chez ces populations et de l’absence de valeurs-seuils spécifiques pour juger d’une OA. Cette étude visait à comparer la prévalence des biomarqueurs de RCM (OA, hypertension artérielle, hyperglycémie, dyslipidémie, résistance à l'insuline et inflammation pré-clinique) chez les Béninois de Cotonou et les Haïtiens de Port-au-Prince (PAP), à étudier l’association de l’OA avec les autres biomarqueurs de RCM, à documenter le rôle du niveau socio-économique (NSE) et du mode de vie dans cette association et à ’identifier les indicateurs anthropométriques de l’OA -tour de taille (TT) et le ratio TT/hauteur (TT/H)- et les seuils qui prédisent le mieux le RCM à Cotonou et à PAP. Il s’est agi d’une analyse de données transversales chez 452 adultes (52 % hommes) apparemment en bonne santé, âgés de 25 à 60 ans, avec 200 sujets vivant à Cotonou (Bénin) et 252 sujets à PAP (Haïti). Les biomarqueurs de RCM considérés étaient : le syndrome métabolique (SMet) d’après les critères harmonisés de 2009 et ses composantes individuelles - une OA à partir d’un TT ≥ 94cm chez les hommes et ≥ 80cm chez les femmes, une hypertension, une dyslipidémie et une hyperglycémie; la résistance à l’insuline définie chez l’ensemble des sujets de l’étude à partir du 75e centile de l’Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA-IR); un ratio d’athérogénicité élevé (Cholestérol sérique total/HDL-Cholestérol); et l’inflammation pré-clinique mesurée à partir d’un niveau de protéine C-réactive ultrasensible (PCRus) entre 3 et 10 mg/l. Le ratio TT/H était aussi considéré pour définir l’OA à partir d’un seuil de 0,5. Les données sur les habitudes alimentaires, la consommation d’alcool, le tabagisme, les caractéristiques sociodémographiques et les conditions socio-économiques incluant le niveau d’éducation et un proxy du revenu (basé sur l’analyse par composante principale des biens et des possessions) ont été recueillies au moyen d’un questionnaire. Sur la base de données de fréquence de consommation d’aliments occidentaux, urbains et traditionnels, des schémas alimentaires des sujets de chaque ville ont été identifiés par analyse typologique. La validité et les valeurs-seuils de TT et du ratio TT/H prédictives du RCM ont été définies à partir des courbes ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristics). Le SMet était présent chez 21,5 % et 16,1 % des participants, respectivement à Cotonou et à PAP. La prévalence d’OA était élevée à Cotonou (52,5 %) qu’à PAP (36%), avec une prévalence plus élevée chez les femmes que chez les hommes. Le profil lipidique sérique était plus athérogène à PAP avec 89,3 % d’HDL-c bas à PAP contre 79,7 % à Cotonou et un ratio CT/HDL-c élevé de 73,4 % à PAP contre 42 % à Cotonou. Les valeurs-seuils spécifiques de TT et du TT/H étaient respectivement 94 cm et 0,59 chez les femmes et 80 cm et 0,50 chez les hommes. Les analyses multivariées de l’OA avec les biomarqueurs de RCM les plus fortement prévalents dans ces deux populations montraient que l’OA était associée à un risque accru de résistance à l’insuline, d’athérogénicité et de tension artérielle élevée et ceci, indépendamment des facteurs socio-économiques et du mode de vie. Deux schémas alimentaires ont émergé, transitionnel et traditionnel, dans chaque ville, mais ceux-ci ne se révélaient pas associés aux biomarqueurs de RCM bien qu’ils soient en lien avec les variables socio-économiques. La présente étude confirme la présence de plusieurs biomarqueurs de RCM chez des sujets apparemment sains. En outre, l’OA est un élément clé du RCM dans ces deux populations. Les seuils actuels de TT devraient être reconsidérés éventuellement à la lumière d’études de plus grande envergure, afin de mieux définir l’OA chez les Noirs africains ou d’origine africaine, ce qui permettra une surveillance épidémiologique plus adéquate des biomarqueurs de RCM.

The objective of this study was to determine the antioxidant effect of essential oregano and alfavaca oil on the fatty acid profile of palm oil, used in industrial potato chips processing, aiming to reduce the oxidative state of palm oil. Essential oregano oil was obtained from industrial residues and commercial essential oregano oil was also acquired. The antioxidant activity of Oregano’s essential oil was taken by DPPH method. The DPPH analysis of the essential oil of oregano residue resulted in an IC50 of 797.04 mg.mL-1 and the essential oil of commercial oregano was 424.25 mg.mL-1. Regarding the content of total phenols, the essential oil of commercial oregano showed 0.167 ± 0.058 ug EAG.g-1. Based on these results, concentrations of 50, 100 e 150ug.g-1 of commercial oregano essential oil was added to palm oil and the fatty acid profile was determined by gas cromatography. Analysis were done with palm oil without being used in frying processes and without added essential oil, as well as with the different essential oil concentrations submitted at three frying processes at one single day. In the second part of the project, the effect of oreganos’s comercial essential oil compared to alfavacão essential oil, at the concentration of 100ug.g-1 in palm oil, and submitted to three frying processes during eleven cycles, was studied. The lipid profile was similar to that described in the literature, which an increase in the number of frying times caused a polyunsaturated fatty acids decrease and, therefore, a proportional increase in saturated fatty acids. It was noted an increase in the amounts of total saturated fatty acids from 43.36% (control) to 43.60% (palm oil with essential oil after 11 frying cycles at the concentration of 100ug.g-1). This fact proves that during the frying process, there is an increase in the rate of formation of saturated fatty acids. However, the addition of oregano essential oil did not provide significant change in the fatty acids of palm oil used in frying process of potato chips. The addition of oregano essential oil in a concentration of 100 ug./mL-1 until the third frying cycle showed a reduction effect of trans fatty acid formation. Although, during 11 frying cycles it was not noticed the essential oil effect under trans fatty acid formation. It can be suggested that this factor may be correlated to the frying time, which may not have been sufficient for significant formation of saturated and trans compounds.

La protéine de liaison aux facteurs de croissance analogues à l’insuline (IGFBP)-2 est une protéine circulante fortement associée à la résistance à l’insuline qui module les effets métaboliques d’IGF-I et IGF-II en s’y associant directement, et qui exerce aussi des actions IGF-indépendantes via sa liaison à la matrice extracellulaire et aux intégrines. Chez l’homme, de faibles niveaux d’IGFBP-2 sont associés à un profil lipidique délétère, ainsi qu’à une augmentation de la masse grasse et de la résistance à l’insuline. Les travaux décrits dans cette thèse montrent chez l’humain et la souris que les niveaux d’IGFBP-2 sont associés de manière indépendante aux composantes du risque cardiométabolique. Chez l’homme, de faibles niveaux d’IGFBP-2 sont associés à la dyslipidémie athérogène. Une valeur seuil d’IGFBP-2 de 221.5 ng/mL a permis de discriminer entre les sujets métaboliquement sains et ceux répondant aux critères du syndrome métabolique. En plus de son association avec la résistance à l’insuline et les composantes du profil lipidique, de faibles niveaux d’IGFBP-2 sont associés à une fonction cardiaque diminuée chez les patients atteints de sténose aortique, tel qu’évaluée par le volume d’éjection indexé, un indice de fonction global du ventricule gauche qui intègre la fonction pompe et le remodelage du tissu. Chez l’homme, des niveaux d’IGFBP-2 élevés sont associés à un tissu adipeux brun plus volumineux ainsi qu’à une activité métabolique plus importante de ce dernier. Ces observations, telles qu’évaluées par PET/CT, sont aussi validées chez les souris surexprimant la forme humaine d’IGFBP-2. Nos travaux démontrent que les niveaux d’IGFBP-2 sont fortement associés au métabolisme des lipoprotéines et des lipides, à la fonction cardiaque ainsi qu’à l’activité du tissu adipeux brun. L’influence des niveaux d’IGFBP-2 par différentes altérations métaboliques menant à l’augmentation du risque cardiométabolique pourrait faire de ce dernier un biomarqueur précoce et intégrateur. Les travaux exposés dans la présente thèse soulignent aussi un rôle mécanistique potentiel pour IGFBP-2 dans la protection contre certaines altérations du métabolisme.

BACKGROUND: Bilirubin can prevent lipid oxidation in vitro, but the association in vivo with oxidized low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) levels has been poorly explored. Our aim is to the association of Ox-LDL with total bilirubin (TB) levels and with variables related with metabolic syndrome and inflammation, in young obese individuals. FINDINGS: 125 obese patients (13.4 years; 53.6% females) were studied. TB, lipid profile including Ox-LDL, markers of glucose metabolism, and levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and adiponectin were determined. Anthropometric data was also collected. In all patients, Ox-LDL correlated positively with BMI, total cholesterol, LDLc, triglycerides (TG), CRP, glucose, insulin and HOMAIR; while inversely with TB and HDLc/Total cholesterol ratio (P < 0.05 for all). In multiple linear regression analysis, LDLc, TG, HDLc and TB levels were significantly associated with Ox-LDL (standardized Beta: 0.656, 0.293, -0.283, -0.164, respectively; P < 0.01 for all). After removing TG and HDLc from the analysis, HOMAIR was included in the regression model. In this new model, LDLc remained the best predictor of Ox-LDL levels (β = 0.665, P < 0.001), followed by TB (β = -0.202, P = 0.002) and HOMAIR (β = 0.163, P = 0.010). CONCLUSIONS: Lower bilirubin levels may contribute to increased LDL oxidation in obese children and adolescents, predisposing to increased cardiovascular risk.

Dyslipidaemia is one of the major cardiovascular risk factors, it can be due to primary causes (i.e. monogenic, characterized by a single gene mutation, or dyslipidaemia of polygenic/environmental causes), or secondary to specific disorders such as obesity, diabetes mellitus or hypothyroidism. Monogenic patients present the most severe phenotype and so they need to be identified in early age so pharmacologic treatment can be implemented to decrease the cardiovascular risk. However the majority of hyperlipidemic patients most likely have a polygenic disease that can be mainly controlled just by the implementation of a healthy lifestyle. Thus, the distinction between monogenic and polygenic dyslipidaemia is important for a prompt diagnosis, cardiovascular risk assessment, counselling and treatment. Besides the already stated biomarkers as LDL, apoB and apoB/apoA-I ratio, other promising (yet, needing further research) biomarkers for clinical differentiation between dyslipidaemias are apoE, sdLDL, apoC-2 and apoC-3. However, none of these biomarkers can explain the complex lipid profile of the majority of these patients.

Introdução – A frequência de dislipidemia em crianças e adolescentes tem vindo a aumentar rapidamente nos últimos anos, estando o seu aparecimento associado a fatores genéticos e ambientais. Este indicador, associado a outras doenças como a obesidade, constituem a síndrome metabólica e são considerados fatores de risco para doença cardiovascular e diabetes, que quando presentes na infância podem conduzir precocemente ao aparecimento destas doenças. Objetivos – Avaliar o perfil de indicadores de saúde de crianças no início de um Programa de Educação Contínua; Verificar os efeitos do Programa de Educação Contínua aplicado durante 36 meses (ginástica funcional, brincadeiras de rua e das aulas de natação), sobre os resultados dos exames iniciais de colesterol, triglicerídeos e do IMC. Métodos - Estudo quantitativo, exploratório e descritivo de corte transversal, realizado entre 2012 e 2015 numa amostra não probabilística por conveniência de 165 crianças, 70,0% da população-alvo. As crianças tinham entre 7 a 12 anos de idade, 40,59% entre 11 e 12 anos e 54% eram do sexo feminino. Eram beneficiárias de um plano de saúde que integrava um programa de intervenção (educação contínua e atividade física), designado Crescendo com Saúde e foram selecionadas através de critérios, como: dislipidemia (colesterol total e/ou triglicerídeos elevados), sobrepeso e/ou obesidade, e história familiar de HAS e DM. Os dados clínicos foram obtidos na consulta de enfermagem, utilizando-se a recolha de sangue para dosemanento do perfil lipídico no início do programa e a cada 6 meses e avaliação do IMC na fase inicial do programa e semanalmente. Para classificação do estado nutricional foram utilizados os pontos de corte da OMS (2007). Resultados – no início do programa 69% das crianças apresentavam hipercolesterolémia, 32% aumento do colesterol, 45% tinham excesso de peso (sobrepeso e obesidade) e 12% risco de sobrepeso. Após o programa de intervenção, das 53% crianças que participaram de forma regular, 29% apresentaram redução do colesterol, 16% dos triglicerídeos e o excesso de peso reduziu em 9%, aumentando contudo o risco de sobrepeso para 22%. Das que participaram de forma irregular, apenas 3% reduziram o perfil lipídico e 1% o estado nutricional. Conclusões – O programa de intervenção permitiu uma redução dos fatores de risco de doença metabólica e permitiu melhorar os hábitos das crianças estudadas e suas famílias. Estes resultados comprovam a eficácia a curto e médio prazo dos programas de intervenção na comunidade, e realçam o papel das intervenções preventivas de educação contínua e de atividade física regular, para o processo de redução dos indicadores de risco metabólico desde a infância.
