El llibre de la Confraria del Senyor Rei, un manuscrito miniado del monasterio de Poblet

El dogma de la Inmaculada Concepción originó la creación de la "Confraria del Senyor Rei", también denominada "Cofradía de la Copncepción de María Immaculada" en la Corona de Aragón. La confraternidad fue fundada en Zaragoza por Pedro IV el 8 de mayo de 1333. Con nuestro estudio queremos mostrar un manuscrito inédito, custodiado en la Biblioteca del Monasterio de Poblet. Se trata de un códice de lujo que contiene los estatutos de la confraternidad. El manuscrito fue iluminado mediante dos ilustraciones. La primera realizada durante el reinado de Martín el Humano, la segunda datada en torno a 1440. durante el reinado de Alfonso el Magnánimo.

Preferred Spatial Frequencies for Human Face Processing Are Associated with Optimal Class Discrimination in the Machine

Psychophysical studies suggest that humans preferentially use a narrow band of low spatial frequencies for face recognition. Here we asked whether artificial face recognition systems have an improved recognition performance at the same spatial frequencies as humans. To this end, we estimated recognition performance over a large database of face images by computing three discriminability measures: Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis, Non-Parametric Discriminant Analysis, and Mutual Information. In order to address frequency dependence, discriminabilities were measured as a function of (filtered) image size. All three measures revealed a maximum at the same image sizes, where the spatial frequency content corresponds to the psychophysical found frequencies. Our results therefore support the notion that the critical band of spatial frequencies for face recognition in humans and machines follows from inherent properties of face images, and that the use of these frequencies is associated with optimal face recognition performance.

Aprendre llengua oral amb un recurs estimulant: el CD-Rom

En aquest article exposarem una proposta didàctica per treballar la llengua oral, valent-nos de les possibilitats que ens ofereixen les noves tecnologies, com ara la gravació i l"emmagatzematge de models de parla i d"imatges de vídeo en un suport digital: el CD-ROM. Aquesta proposta, tot i que es porta a terme en assignatures de nivell universitari dels ensenyaments de mestre i de comu- nicació audiovisual de la UB, és adaptable a diversos nivells educatius, com a l"ensenyament secundari o al de persones adultes, entre d"altres.

Els mitjans de comunicació ens atansen periòdicament notícies commovedores i ens sotraguegen amb imatges de fams, sequeres o misèria, les víctimes de les quals acostumen a viure al sud. També ens fan arribar els èxits més notables de l'economia i la tècnica: més producció, més vendes, més autopistes, millors avions. Tot això passa, preferentment, al nord.

Virtual milgram : empathic concern or personal distress? Evidence from functional MRI and dispositional measures

One motive for behaving as the agent of another"s aggression appears to be anchored in as yet unelucidated mechanisms of obedience to authority. In a recent partial replication of Milgram"s obedience paradigm within an immersive virtual environment, participants administered pain to a female virtual human and observed her suffering. Whether the participants" response to the latter was more akin to other-oriented empathic concern for her well-being or to a self-oriented aversive state of personal distress in response to her distress is unclear. Using the stimuli from that study, this event-related fMRI-based study analysed brain activity during observation of the victim in pain versus not in pain. This contrast revealed activation in pre-defi ned brain areas known to be involved in affective processing but not in those commonly associated with affect sharing (e.g., ACC and insula). We then examined whether different dimensions of dispositional empathy predict activity within the same pre-defi ned brain regions: While personal distress and fantasy (i.e., tendency to transpose oneself into fi ctional situations and characters) predicted brain activity, empathic concern and perspective taking predicted no change in neuronal response associated with pain observation. These exploratory fi ndings suggest that there is a distinct pattern of brain activity associated with observing the pain-related behaviour of the victim within the context of this social dilemma, that this observation evoked a self-oriented aversive state of personal distress, and that the objective"reality" of pain is of secondary importance for this response. These fi ndings provide a starting point for experimentally more rigorous investigation of obedience.

Novel·lista, assagista, política, activista cultural, dona de teatre i traductora de més de trenta obres, Maria Aurèlia Capmany és autora d’una obra extensa i clarament ideològica, en què les reivindicacions feministes ocupen una gran part. Virginia Woolf i Simone de Beauvoir són les seves principals fonts teòriques i vitals. Encara que, per diverses circumstàncies, no les tradueix mai, es converteix en la seva mitjancera cultural i ideològica a casa nostra: proposant-ne traduccions a algunes editorials, escrivint-ne pròlegs, imitant-les, adaptant-ne conceptes o imatges, etc. Marguerite Duras, de qui traslladà Un dic contra el Pacífic (1965), és també una de les seves mares literàries. Aquest treball intenta ser una aproximació al feminisme de Capmany i a la seva repercussió en el camp de la traductologia.

Les imatges evocadores sovint són la matèria primordial de l"escriptura poètica, si bé, mitjançant l"ús poètic del llenguatge, aquestes imatges poden esdevenir un joc de capses xineses, o fins i tot configurar il·lustracions impossibles. La present poètica arrenca a continuació amb un recurs estilístic inspirat en el mestratge literari d"Hildegarda de Bingen (1098-1179). La mística renana iniciava cadascun dels apartats de les seves obres visionàries amb el relat d"allò vist i escoltat, i alguns dels capítols contenen una minuciosa descripció de la figura poderosa i misteriosa que se li apareixia durant la visió. Així, aquest escrit comença amb el pre-text de parlar d"una imatge, partint de l"observació atenta dels seus volums, línies, contorns i actituds...

Phase mask selection in wavefront coding systems: an adaptive approach

A method for optimizing the strength of a parametric phase mask for a wavefront coding imaging system is presented. The method is based on an optimization process that minimizes a proposed merit function. The goal is to achieve modulation transfer function invariance while quantitatively maintaining nal image delity. A parametric lter that copes with the noise present in the captured images is used to obtain the nal images, and this lter is optimized. The whole process results in optimum phase mask strength and optimal parameters for the restoration lter. The results for a particular optical system are presented and tested experimentally in the labo- ratory. The experimental results show good agreement with the simulations, indicating that the procedure is useful.

Tractament digital de la imatge com a suport per a la recerca

La investigació actual necessita recórrer en nombroses ocasions a la imatge, i encara ho podria fer més. El registre d'imatges s'ha convertit avui en una feina senzilla i económica, almenys en relació amb la situació de fa vint anys. I des de fa amb prou feines un parell d'anys, el tractament de la imatge animada mitjançant tècniques digitals encara s'ha simplificat més, alhora que ha proporcionat nous canvis que permeten explorar la realitat.

La Representación de la mujer en la prensa internacional online durante la Primavera Árabe en Egipto

El presente trabajo de investigación tiene como objetivo principal analizar la representación del papel de la mujer egipcia en la organización y participación en la primavera árabe en Egipto. Por medio del análisis de contenido aplicado a los titulares e imágenes publicados durante un periodo deteminado de las revueltas sociales en los periódicos The New York Times, Le Monde y El Mundo en su versión on line. Concluyendo se puede indicar que la representación internacional de la mujer egipcia durante las revueltas desde el año 2011, ha sido insuficiente y además sirvió a los medios de comunicación hasta cierto punto como medida de estereotipar la situación social de la mujer.

Improving the performance of the single-dish Cherenkov telescope MAGIC through the use of signal timing

The Cherenkov light flashes produced by Extensive Air Showers are very short in time. A high bandwidth and fast digitizing readout, therefore, can minimize the influence of the background from the light of the night sky, and improve the performance in Cherenkov telescopes. The time structure of the Cherenkov image can further be used in single-dish Cherenkov telescopes as an additional parameter to reduce the background from unwanted hadronic showers. A description of an analysis method which makes use of the time information and the subsequent improvement on the performance of the MAGIC telescope (especially after the upgrade with an ultra fast 2 GSamples/s digitization system in February 2007) will be presented. The use of timing information in the analysis of the new MAGIC data reduces the background by a factor two, which in turn results in an enhancement of about a factor 1.4 of the flux sensitivity to point-like sources, as tested on observations of the Crab Nebula.

The Coordinated Radio and Infrared Survey for High-mass Star Formation. II. Source Catalog

The CORNISH project is the highest resolution radio continuum survey of the Galactic plane to date. It is the 5 GHz radio continuum part of a series of multi-wavelength surveys that focus on the northern GLIMPSE region (10° < l < 65°), observed by the Spitzer satellite in the mid-infrared. Observations with the Very Large Array in B and BnA configurations have yielded a 1.''5 resolution Stokes I map with a root mean square noise level better than 0.4 mJy beam 1. Here we describe the data-processing methods and data characteristics, and present a new, uniform catalog of compact radio emission. This includes an implementation of automatic deconvolution that provides much more reliable imaging than standard CLEANing. A rigorous investigation of the noise characteristics and reliability of source detection has been carried out. We show that the survey is optimized to detect emission on size scales up to 14'' and for unresolved sources the catalog is more than 90% complete at a flux density of 3.9 mJy. We have detected 3062 sources above a 7σ detection limit and present their ensemble properties. The catalog is highly reliable away from regions containing poorly sampled extended emission, which comprise less than 2% of the survey area. Imaging problems have been mitigated by down-weighting the shortest spacings and potential artifacts flagged via a rigorous manual inspection with reference to the Spitzer infrared data. We present images of the most common source types found: H II regions, planetary nebulae, and radio galaxies. The CORNISH data and catalog are available online at http://cornish.leeds.ac.uk.
