PURPOSE Austrian out-of-hospital emergency physicians (OOHEP) undergo mandatory biannual emergency physician refresher courses to maintain their licence. The purpose of this study was to compare different reported emergency skills and knowledge, recommended by the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) guidelines, between OOHEP who work regularly at an out-of-hospital emergency service and those who do not currently work as OOHEP but are licenced. METHODS We obtained data from 854 participants from 19 refresher courses. Demographics, questions about their practice and multiple-choice questions about ALS-knowledge were answered and analysed. We particularly explored the application of therapeutic hypothermia, intraosseous access, pocket guide use and knowledge about the participants' defibrillator in use. A multivariate logistic regression analysed differences between both groups of OOHEP. Age, gender, years of clinical experience, ERC-ALS provider course attendance and the self-reported number of resuscitations were control variables. RESULTS Licenced OOHEP who are currently employed in emergency service are significantly more likely to initiate intraosseous access (OR = 4.013, p < 0.01), they initiate mild-therapeutic hypothermia after successful resuscitation (OR = 2.550, p < 0.01) more often, and knowledge about the used defibrillator was higher (OR = 2.292, p < 0.01). No difference was found for the use of pocket guides.OOHEP who have attended an ERC-ALS provider course since 2005 have initiated more mild therapeutic hypothermia after successful resuscitation (OR = 1.670, p <0.05) as well as participants who resuscitated within the last year (OR = 2.324, p < 0.01), while older OOHEP initiated mild therapeutic hypothermia less often, measured per year of age (OR = 0.913, p <0.01). CONCLUSION Licenced and employed OOHEP implement ERC guidelines better into clinical practice, but more training on life-saving rescue techniques needs to be done to improve knowledge and to raise these rates of application.

We describe a patient with a three-year history of severe progressive left-sided glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN) that failed to adequately respond to various drug therapies. The application of lidocaine spray to the posterior pharyngeal wall provided no more than short-term relief. Apart from a large hypertrophic tonsillectomy scar on the left side all clinical and radiologic findings were normal. In terms of therapeutic local anaesthesia, the hypertrophic tonsillectomy scar tissue was completely infiltrated with the local anaesthetic (LA) procaine 1%. The patient has been almost completely pain-free ever since, and the lidocaine spray is no longer needed. Six weeks after the first treatment a repeat infiltration of the tonsillectomy scar led to the complete resolution of all symptoms. The patient has become totally symptom-free without the need to take any medication now for two and a half years. This is the first report of a successful therapeutic infiltration of a tonsillectomy scar using an LA in a patient with GPN that has been refractory to medical treatment for several years. A possible explanation may be that the positive feedback loop maintaining neurogenic inflammation is disrupted and "sympathetically maintained pain" resolved by LA infiltration.

Seizure freedom in patients suffering from pharmacoresistant epilepsies is still not achieved in 20–30% of all cases. Hence, current therapies need to be improved, based on a more complete understanding of ictogenesis. In this respect, the analysis of functional networks derived from intracranial electroencephalographic (iEEG) data has recently become a standard tool. Functional networks however are purely descriptive models and thus are conceptually unable to predict fundamental features of iEEG time-series, e.g., in the context of therapeutical brain stimulation. In this paper we present some first steps towards overcoming the limitations of functional network analysis, by showing that its results are implied by a simple predictive model of time-sliced iEEG time-series. More specifically, we learn distinct graphical models (so called Chow–Liu (CL) trees) as models for the spatial dependencies between iEEG signals. Bayesian inference is then applied to the CL trees, allowing for an analytic derivation/prediction of functional networks, based on thresholding of the absolute value Pearson correlation coefficient (CC) matrix. Using various measures, the thus obtained networks are then compared to those which were derived in the classical way from the empirical CC-matrix. In the high threshold limit we find (a) an excellent agreement between the two networks and (b) key features of periictal networks as they have previously been reported in the literature. Apart from functional networks, both matrices are also compared element-wise, showing that the CL approach leads to a sparse representation, by setting small correlations to values close to zero while preserving the larger ones. Overall, this paper shows the validity of CL-trees as simple, spatially predictive models for periictal iEEG data. Moreover, we suggest straightforward generalizations of the CL-approach for modeling also the temporal features of iEEG signals.

Lung adenosquamous carcinoma is a particular subtype of non-small cell lung carcinoma that is defined by the coexistence of adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma components. The aim of this study was to assess the mutational profile in each component of 16 adenosquamous carcinoma samples from a Caucasian population by a combination of next generation sequencing using the cancer hotspot panel as well as the colon and lung cancer panel and FISH. Identified mutations were confirmed by Sanger sequencing of DNA from cancer cells of each component collected by Laser Capture microdissection. Mutations typical for adenocarcinoma as well as squamous cell carcinoma were identified. Driver mutations were predominantly in the trunk suggesting a monoclonal origin of adenosquamous carcinoma. Most remarkably, EGFR mutations and mutations in the PI3K signaling pathway, which accounted for 30% and 25% of tumors respectively, were more prevalent while KRAS mutations were less prevalent than expected for a Caucasian population. Surprisingly, expression of classifier miR-205 was intermediate between that of classical adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma suggesting that adenosquamous carcinoma is a transitional stage between these tumor types. The high prevalence of therapy-relevant targets opens new options of therapeutic intervention for adenosquamous carcinoma patients.

Introduction The global prevalence of pathologic myopia is 0.9-3.1%, and visual impairment is found in 0.1-0.5% of European and 0.2-1.4% of Asian studies. Myopic choroidal neovascularization (mCNV) affects 5.2-11.3% of pathologic myopia patients and is a leading cause of vision impairment in the working-age population. Characteristic morphological changes and visual-acuity decrease are diagnostic features. Vascular-Endothelial-Growth-Factor (VEGF) has been identified as a trigger for pathologic neovascularization in these highly myopic patients. Areas Covered We cover the epidemiology, pathology and diagnostic aspects of mCNV. The history of therapeutic interventions is described, followed by an overview of current standard-of-care (SOC)-blocking VEGF using bevacizumab (off-label), ranibizumab or aflibercept and improving vision up to 13.5-14.4 letters. Despite good efficacy, an unmet medical need remains. We summarize ongoing and future developments of new drugs to treat or potentially cure mCNV. Expert Opinion mCNV is a major global health concern. Early detection and treatment is key for a satisfying outcome. The current SOC, VEGF inhibitors, affords good therapeutic efficacy and reasonable disease stabilization with few intravitreal treatments per year. However, the long-term prognosis is still unsatisfactory, and side-effects like chorioretinal atrophy development are of concern. Therefore, efforts should be intensified to develop more effective therapies.

Divalent metal transporter-1 (SLC11A2/DMT1) uses the H+ electrochemical gradient as the driving force to transport divalent metal ions such as Fe2+, Mn2+ and others metals into mammalian cells. DMT1 is ubiquitously expressed, most notably in proximal duodenum, immature erythroid cells, brain and kidney. This transporter mediates H+-coupled transport of ferrous iron across the apical membrane of enterocytes. In addition, in cells such as to erythroid precursors, following transferrin receptor (TfR) mediated endocytosis; it mediates H+-coupled exit of ferrous iron from endocytic vesicles into the cytosol. Dysfunction of human DMT1 is associated with several pathologies such as iron deficiency anemia hemochromatosis, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, as well as colorectal cancer and esophageal adenocarcinoma, making DMT1 an attractive target for drug discovery. In the present study, we performed a ligand-based virtual screening of the Princeton database (700,000 commercially available compounds) to search for pharmacophore shape analogs of recently reported DMT1 inhibitors. We discovered a new compound, named pyrimidinone 8, which mediates a reversible linear non-competitive inhibition of human DMT1 (hDMT1) transport activity with a Ki of ∼20 μM. This compound does not affect hDMT1 cell surface expression and shows no dependence on extracellular pH. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental evidence that hDMT1 can be allosterically modulated by pharmacological agents. Pyrimidinone 8 represents a novel versatile tool compound and it may serve as a lead structure for the development of therapeutic compounds for pre-clinical assessment.

Objective: The authors quantified nonverbal synchrony—the coordination of patient's and therapist's movement—in a random sample of same-sex psychotherapy dyads. The authors contrasted nonverbal synchrony in these dyads with a control condition and assessed its association with session-level and overall psychotherapy outcome. Method: Using an automated objective video analysis algorithm (Motion Energy Analysis; MEA), the authors calculated nonverbal synchrony in (n = 104) videotaped psychotherapy sessions from 70 Caucasian patients (37 women, 33 men, mean age = 36.5 years, SD = 10.2) treated at an outpatient psychotherapy clinic. The sample was randomly drawn from an archive (N = 301) of routinely videotaped psychotherapies. Patients and their therapists assessed session impact with self-report postsession questionnaires. A battery of pre- and postsymptomatology questionnaires measured therapy effectiveness. Results: The authors found that nonverbal synchrony is higher in genuine interactions contrasted with pseudointeractions (a control condition generated by a specifically designed shuffling procedure). Furthermore, nonverbal synchrony is associated with session-level process as well as therapy outcome: It is increased in sessions rated by patients as manifesting high relationship quality and in patients experiencing high self-efficacy. Higher nonverbal synchrony characterized psychotherapies with higher symptom reduction. Conclusions: The results suggest that nonverbal synchrony embodies the patients' self-reported quality of the relationship and further variables of therapy process. This hitherto overlooked facet of therapeutic relationships might prove useful as an indicator of therapy progress and outcome. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2015 APA, all rights reserved)

The genetic etiology of stroke likely reflects the influence of multiple loci with small effects, each modulating different pathophysiological processes. This research project utilized three analytical strategies to address the paucity of information related to the identification and characterization of genetic variation associated with stroke in the general population. ^ First, the general contribution of familial factors to stroke susceptibility was evaluated in a population-based sample of unrelated individuals. Increased risk of subclinical cerebral infarction was observed among individuals with a positive parental history of stroke. This association did not appear to be mediated by established stroke risk factors, specifically blood pressure levels or hypertension status. ^ The need to identify specific gene variation associated with stroke in the general population was addressed by evaluating seven candidate gene polymorphisms in a population-based sample of unrelated individuals. Three polymorphisms were significantly associated with increased subclinical cerebral infarction or incident clinical ischemic stroke risk. These relationships include the G-protein β3 subunit 825C/T polymorphism and clinical stroke in Whites, the lipoprotein lipase S/X447 polymorphism and subclinical and clinical stroke in men, and the angiotensin I-converting enzyme Ins/Del polymorphism and subclinical stroke in White men. These associations did not appear to be obfuscated by the stroke risk factors adjusted for in the analysis models specifically blood pressure levels or anti-hypertensive medication use. ^ The final research strategy considered, on a genome-wide scale, the idea that genetic variation may contribute to the occurrence of hypertension or stroke through a common etiologic pathway. Genomic regions were identified for which significant evidence of heterogeneity was observed among hypertensive sibpairs stratified by family history of stroke information. Regions identified on chromosome 15 in African Americans, and chromosome 13 in Whites and African Americans, suggest the presence of genes influencing hypertension and stroke susceptibility. ^ Insight into the role of genetics in stroke is useful for the potential early identification of individuals at increased risk for stroke and improved understanding of the etiology of the disease. The ultimate goal of these endeavors is to guide the development of therapeutic intervention and informed prevention to provide a lasting and positive impact on public health. ^

Cytochrome P450 3As (CYP3As) are phase I enzymes responsible for metabolizing more than 50% of clinical drugs. Recent studies have revealed that expression of CYP3As is two-fold higher in women than in men leading to a faster metabolic clearance of therapeutic drugs in women. In this study, we analyzed the female specific rat CYP3A isoform, CYP3A9. We evaluated the effects of progesterone and estrogen on CYP3A9 regulation and showed a distinct role for estrogen in mediating female dominance of CYP3A9. We also observed changes in CYP3A9 expression at various stages of pregnancy which correlates well with varying physiological estradiol concentrations. In addition, by the in vitro data shows that estradiol mediated induction can be abrogated with estrogen receptor antagonist ICI182,780. We also identified three novel murine CYP3A isoforms CYP3A13, CYP3A41 and CYP3A44 and characterized their genomic structures and expression profiles. CYP3A41 and CYP3A44 show female specific expression but surprisingly this female dominance is not mediated via estrogen. Control male mice did not exhibit any CYP3A41 mRNA levels but showed minimal levels of CYP3A44. In order to gain insights into the governance ofαthe female specific genes, the hepatic regulation of CYP3A41 and CYP3A44 by the xeno-sensors PXR and CAR was examined. In female mice, pregnenolone-16α-carboxynitrile, suppressed CYP3A41 and CYP3A44 mRNA levels in PXR−/− background whereas dexamethasone-dependent suppression of CYP3A41 was mediated by PXR. In addition, phenobarbital challenge in PXR−/− revealed up-regulation of both CYP3A44, CYP3A41 levels only in males. No role for CAR was seen in the regulation of either CYP3A41 or CYP3A44 gene expression in female mice. Interestingly, PXR and CAR ligands induced male CYP3A44 levels in a receptor dependent fashion. This increase of CYP3A44 transcript in male mice is in contrast to the response seen in female mice, which clearly indicates an additional layer of regulation. Our findings suggest that gender plays a strategic role in directing the CAR/PXR mediated effects of CYP3A44/CYP3A41. This implies that differential regulation of female specific CYP3A isoforms may be the key to explain some of the gender differences observed in clearance of certain therapeutics like antidepressants and analgesics. ^

This descriptive study assesses the current status of mental illness in Bendel State of Nigeria to determine its implications for mental health policy and education. It is a study of the demographic characteristics of psychiatric patients in the only two modern western psychiatric facilities in Bendel State, the various treatment modalities utilized for mental illness, and the people's choice of therapeutic measures for mental illness in Bendel State.^ This study investigated ten aspects of mental illness in Bendel State (1) An increase of the prevalence of mental illness (psychiatric disorder) in Bendel State. (2) Unaided, unguided, and uncared for mentally ill people roaming about Bendel State. (3) Pluralistic Treatment Modalities for mentally ill patients in Bendel State. (4) Traditional Healers treating more mentally ill patients than the modern western psychiatric hospitals. (5) Inadequate modern western psychiatric facilities in Bendel State. (6) Controversy between Traditional Health and modern western trained doctors over the issue of possible cooperation between traditional and modern western medicine. (7) Evidence of mental illness in all ethnic groups in Bendel State. (8) More scientifically based and better organized modern western psychiatric hospitals than the traditional healing centers. (9) Traditional healers' level of approach with patients, and accessibility to patients' families compared with the modern western trained doctors. (10) An urgent need for an official action to institute a comprehensive mental health policy that will provide an optimum care for the mentally ill in Bendel State, and in Nigeria in general.^ Of the eight popular treatment modalities generally used in Bendel State for mental illness, 54% of the non-patient population sampled preferred the use of traditional healing, 26.5% preferred the use of modern western treatment, and 19.5% preferred religious healers.^ The investigator concluded at this time not to recommend the integration of Traditional Healing and modern western medicine in Nigeria. Rather, improvement of the existing modern western psychiatric facilities and a proposal to establish facilities to enable traditional healing and modern western medicine to exist side by side were highly recommended. ^

Measurement of the absorbed dose from ionizing radiation in medical applications is an essential component to providing safe and reproducible patient care. There are a wide variety of tools available for measuring radiation dose; this work focuses on the characterization of two common, solid-state dosimeters in medical applications: thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD) and optically stimulated luminescent dosimeters (OSLD). There were two main objectives to this work. The first objective was to evaluate the energy dependence of TLD and OSLD for non-reference measurement conditions in a radiotherapy environment. The second objective was to fully characterize the OSLD nanoDot in a CT environment, and to provide validated calibration procedures for CT dose measurement using OSLD. Current protocols for dose measurement using TLD and OSLD generally assume a constant photon energy spectrum within a nominal beam energy regardless of measurement location, tissue composition, or changes in beam parameters. Variations in the energy spectrum of therapeutic photon beams may impact the response of TLD and OSLD and could thereby result in an incorrect measure of dose unless these differences are accounted for. In this work, we used a Monte Carlo based model to simulate variations in the photon energy spectra of a Varian 6MV beam; then evaluated the impact of the perturbations in energy spectra on the response of both TLD and OSLD using Burlin Cavity Theory. Energy response correction factors were determined for a range of conditions and compared to measured correction factors with good agreement. When using OSLD for dose measurement in a diagnostic imaging environment, photon energy spectra are often referenced to a therapy-energy or orthovoltage photon beam – commonly 250kVp, Co-60, or even 6MV, where the spectra are substantially different. Appropriate calibration techniques specifically for the OSLD nanoDot in a CT environment have not been presented in the literature; furthermore the dependence of the energy response of the calibration energy has not been emphasized. The results of this work include detailed calibration procedures for CT dosimetry using OSLD, and a full characterization of this dosimetry system in a low-dose, low-energy setting.

Recurrence of Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC) is common; thus, it is essential to improve the effectiveness and reduce toxicity of current treatments. Proteins in the Src/Jak/STAT pathway represent potential therapeutic targets, as this pathway is hyperactive in HNSCC and it has roles in cell migration, metastasis, proliferation, survival, and angiogenesis. During short-term Src inhibition, Janus kinase (Jak) 2, and signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) 3 and STAT5 are dephosphorylated and inactivated. Following sustained Src inhibition, STAT5 remains inactive, but Jak2 and STAT3 are reactivated following their early inhibition. To further characterize the mechanism of this novel feedback pathway we performed several experiments to look at the interactions between Src, Jak2, STAT5 and STAT3. We attempted to develop a non-radioactive kinase assay using purified recombinant Jak2 and Src proteins, but found that phospho-tyrosine antibodies were non-specifically binding to purified recombinant proteins. We then performed in vitro kinase assays (IVKAs) using purified recombinant Jak2, Src, STAT3, and STAT5 proteins with and without Src and Jak2 pharmacologic inhibitors. We also examined the interactions of these proteins in intact HNSCC cells. We found that recombinant Jak2, STAT3, and STAT5 are direct substrates of Src and that recombinant Src, STAT3, and STAT5 are direct substrates of Jak2 in the IVKA. To our knowledge, the finding that Src is a Jak substrate is novel and has not been shown before. In intact HNSCC cells we find that STAT3 can be reactivated despite continuous Src inhibition and that STAT5 continues to be inhibited despite Jak2 reactivation. Also, Jak2 inhibition did not affect Src or STAT5 activity but it did cause STAT3 inhibition. We hypothesized that the differences between the intact cells and the IVKA assays were due to a potential need for binding partners in intact HNSCC cells. One potential binding partner that we examined is the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). We found that EGFR activation caused increased activation of Src and STAT5 but not Jak2. Our results demonstrate that although STAT3 and STAT5 are capable of being Src and Jak2 substrates, in intact HNSCC cells Src predominantly regulates STAT5 and Jak2 regulates STAT3. Regulation of STAT5 by Src may involve interactions between Src and EGFR. This knowledge along with future studies will better define the mechanisms of STAT regulation in HNSCC cells and ultimately result in an ideal combination of therapeutic agents for HNSCC.

The knowledge about processes concerning perception and understanding is of paramount importance for designing means of communication like maps and charts. This is especially the case, if one does not want to lose sight of the map-user and if map-design is to be orientated along the map-users needs and preferences in order to improve the cartographic product's usability. A scientific approach to visualization can help to achieve useable results. The insights achieved by such an approach can lead to modes of visualization that are superior to those, which have seemingly proved their value in praxis - so-called "bestpractices" -, concerning their utility and efficiency. This thesis shows this by using the example of visualizing the limits of bodies of waters in the Southern Ocean. After making some introductorily remarks on the chosen mode of problem-solution in chapter one, which simultaneously illustrate the flow of work while working on the problem, in chapter two the relevant information concerning the drawing of limits in the Southern Ocean is outlined. Chapter 3 builds the theoretical framework, which is a multidisciplinary approach to representation. This theoretical framework is based on "How Maps Work" by the American Cartographer MacEachren (1995/2004). His "scientific approach to visualization" is amended and adjusted by the knowledge gained from recent findings of the social sciences where necessary. So, the approach suggested in this thesis represents a synergy of psychology, sociology, semiotics, linguistics, communication theory and cartography. It follows the tradition of interdisciplinary research getting over the boundaries of a single scientific subject. The achieved holistic approach can help to improve the usability of cartographic products. It illustrates on the one hand those processes taking place while perceiving and recognizing cartographic information - so-called bottom-up-processes. On the other hand it illuminates the processes which happen during understanding this information in so-called top-down-processes. Bottom-up- and top-down-processes are interdependent and inseparably interrelated and therefore cannot be understood without each other. Regarding aspects of usability the approach suggested in this thesis strongly focuses on the map-user. This is the reason why the phenomenon of communication gains more weight than in MacEachren's map-centered approach. Because of this, in chapter 4 a holistic approach to communication is developed. This approach makes clear that only the map-user can evaluate the usability of a cartographic product. Only if he can extract the information relevant for him from the cartographical product, it is really useable. The concept of communication is well suited to conceive that. In case of the visualization of limits of bodies of water in the Southern Ocean, which is not complex enough to illustrate all results of the theoretical considerations, it is suggested to visualize the limits with red lines. This suggestion deviates from the commonly used mode of visualization. So, this thesis shows how theory is able to ameliorate praxis. Chapter 5 leads back to the task of fixing limits of the bodies of water in the area of concern. A convention by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) states that those limits should be drawn by using meridians, parallels, rhumb lines and bathymetric data. Based on the available bathymetric data both a representation and a process model are calculated, which should support the drawing of the limits. The quality of both models, which depends on the quality of the bathymetric data at hand, leads to the decision that the representation model is better suited to support the drawing of limits.

Introduction: Chemical composition of water determines its physical properties and character of processes proceeding in it: freezing temperature, volume of evaporation, density, color, transparency, filtration capacity, etc. Presence of chemical elements in water solution confers waters special physical properties exerting significant influence on their circulation, creates necessary conditions for development and inhabitance of flora and fauna, and imparts to the ocean waters some chemical features that radically differ them from the land waters (Alekin & Liakhin, 1984). Hydrochemical information helps to determine elements of water circulation, convection depth, makes it easier to distinguish water masses and gives additional knowledge of climatic variability of ocean conditions. Hydrochemical information is a necessary part of biological research. Water chemical composition can be the governing characteristics determining possibility and limits of use of marine objects, both stationary and moving in sea water. Subject of investigation of hydrochemistry is study of dynamics of chemical composition, i.e. processes of its formation and hydrochemical conditions of water bodies (Alekin & Liakhin 1984). The hydrochemical processes in the Arctic Ocean are the least known. Some information on these processes can be obtained in odd publications. A generalizing study of hydrochemical conditions in the Arctic Ocean based on expeditions conducted in the years 1948-1975 has been carried out by Rusanov et al. (1979). The "Atlas of the World Ocean: the Arctic Ocean" contains a special section "Hydrochemistry" (Gorshkov, 1980). Typical vertical profiles, transects and maps for different depths - 0, 100, 300, 500, 1000, 2000, 3000 m are given in this section for the following parameters: dissolved oxygen, phosphate, silicate, pH and alkaline-chlorine coefficient. The maps were constructed using the data of expeditions conducted in the years 1948-1975. The illustrations reflect main features of distribution of the hydrochemical elements for multi-year period and represent a static image of hydrochemical conditions. Distribution of the hydrochemical elements on the ocean surface is given for two seasons - winter and summer, for the other depths are given mean annual fields. Aim of the present Atlas is description of hydrochemical conditions in the Arctic Ocean on the basis of a greater body of hydrochemical information for the years 1948-2000 and using the up-to-date methods of analysis and electronic forms of presentation of hydrochemical information. The most wide-spread characteristics determined in water samples were used as hydrochemical indices. They are: dissolved oxygen, phosphate, silicate, pH, total alkalinity, nitrite and nitrate. An important characteristics of water salt composition - "salinity" has been considered in the Oceanographic Atlas of the Arctic Ocean (1997, 1998). Presentation of the hydrochemical characteristics in this Hydrochemical Atlas is wider if compared with that of the former Atlas (Gorshkov, 1980). Maps of climatic distribution of the hydrochemical elements were constructed for all the standard depths, and seasonal variability of the hydrochemical parameters is given not only for the surface, but also for the underlying standard depths up to 400 m and including. Statistical characteristics of the hydrochemical elements are given for the first time. Detailed accuracy estimates of initial data and map construction are also given in the Atlas. Calculated values of mean-root deviations, maximum and minimum values of the parameters demonstrate limits of their variability for the analyzed period of observations. Therefore, not only investigations of chemical statics are summarized in the Atlas, but also some elements of chemical dynamics are demonstrated. Digital arrays of the hydrochemical elements obtained in nodes of a regular grid are the new form of characteristics presentation in the Atlas. It should be mentioned that the same grid and the same boxes were used in the Atlas, as those that had been used by creation of the US-Russian climatic Oceanographic Atlas. It allows to combine hydrochemical and oceanographic information of these Atlases. The first block of the digital arrays contains climatic characteristics calculated using direct observational data. These climatic characteristics were not calculated in the regions without observations, and the information arrays for these regions have gaps. The other block of climatic information in a gridded form was obtained with the help of objective analysis of observational data. Procedure of the objective analysis allowed us to obtain climatic estimates of the hydrochemical characteristics for the whole water area of the Arctic Ocean including the regions not covered by observations. Data of the objective analysis can be widely used, in particular, in hydrobiological investigations and in modeling of hydrochemical conditions of the Arctic Ocean. Array of initial measurements is a separate block. It includes all the available materials of hydrochemical observations in the form, as they were presented in different sources. While keeping in mind that this array contains some amount of perverted information, the authors of the Atlas assumed it necessary to store this information in its primary form. Methods of data quality control can be developed in future in the process of hydrochemical information accumulation. It can be supposed that attitude can vary in future to the data that were rejected according to the procedure accepted in the Atlas. The hydrochemical Atlas of the Arctic Ocean is the first specialized and electronic generalization of hydrochemical observations in the Arctic Ocean and finishes the program of joint efforts of Russian and US specialists in preparation of a number of atlases for the Arctic. The published Oceanographic Atlas (1997, 1998), Atlas of Arctic Meteorology and Climate (2000), Ice Atlas of the Arctic Ocean prepared for publication and Hydrochemical Atlas of the Arctic Ocean represent a united series of fundamental generalizations of empirical knowledge of Arctic Ocean nature at climatic level. The Hydrochemical Atlas of the Arctic Ocean was elaborated in the result of joint efforts of the SRC of the RF AARI and IARC. Dr. Ye. Nikiforov was scientific supervisor of the Atlas, Dr. R. Single core capabilities have reached their maximum clock speed; new multicore architectures provide an alternative way to tackle this issue instead. The design of decoding applications running on top of these multicore platforms and their optimization to exploit all system computational power is crucial to obtain best results. Since the development at the integration level of printed circuit boards are increasingly difficult to optimize due to physical constraints and the inherent increase in power consumption, development of multiprocessor architectures is becoming the new Holy Grail. In this sense, it is crucial to develop applications that can run on the new multi-core architectures and find out distributions to maximize the potential use of the system. Today most of commercial electronic devices, available in the market, are composed of embedded systems. These devices incorporate recently multi-core processors. Task management onto multiple core/processors is not a trivial issue, and a good task/actor scheduling can yield to significant improvements in terms of efficiency gains and also processor power consumption. Scheduling of data flows between the actors that implement the applications aims to harness multi-core architectures to more types of applications, with an explicit expression of parallelism into the application. On the other hand, the recent development of the MPEG Reconfigurable Video Coding (RVC) standard allows the reconfiguration of the video decoders. RVC is a flexible standard compatible with MPEG developed codecs, making it the ideal tool to integrate into the new multimedia terminals to decode video sequences. With the new versions of the Open RVC-CAL Compiler (Orcc), a static mapping of the actors that implement the functionality of the application can be done once the application executable has been generated. This static mapping must be done for each of the different cores available on the working platform. It has been chosen an embedded system with a processor with two ARMv7 cores. This platform allows us to obtain the desired tests, get as much improvement results from the execution on a single core, and contrast both with a PC-based multiprocessor system. Las posibilidades ofrecidas por el aumento de la velocidad de la frecuencia de reloj de sistemas de un solo procesador están siendo agotadas. Las nuevas arquitecturas multiprocesador proporcionan una vía de desarrollo alternativa en este sentido. El diseño y optimización de aplicaciones de descodificación de video que se ejecuten sobre las nuevas arquitecturas permiten un mejor aprovechamiento y favorecen la obtención de mayores rendimientos. Hoy en día muchos de los dispositivos comerciales que se están lanzando al mercado están integrados por sistemas embebidos, que recientemente están basados en arquitecturas multinúcleo. El manejo de las tareas de ejecución sobre este tipo de arquitecturas no es una tarea trivial, y una buena planificación de los actores que implementan las funcionalidades puede proporcionar importantes mejoras en términos de eficiencia en el uso de la capacidad de los procesadores y, por ende, del consumo de energía. Por otro lado, el reciente desarrollo del estándar de Codificación de Video Reconfigurable (RVC), permite la reconfiguración de los descodificadores de video. RVC es un estándar flexible y compatible con anteriores codecs desarrollados por MPEG. Esto hace de RVC el estándar ideal para ser incorporado en los nuevos terminales multimedia que se están comercializando. Con el desarrollo de las nuevas versiones del compilador específico para el desarrollo de lenguaje RVC-CAL (Orcc), en el que se basa MPEG RVC, el mapeo estático, para entornos basados en multiprocesador, de los actores que integran un descodificador es posible. Se ha elegido un sistema embebido con un procesador con dos núcleos ARMv7. Esta plataforma nos permitirá llevar a cabo las pruebas de verificación y contraste de los conceptos estudiados en este trabajo, en el sentido del desarrollo de descodificadores de video basados en MPEG RVC y del estudio de la planificación y mapeo estático de los mismos.
