The objective of this study was to compare the gas exchange, photosynthetic capacity and water potential of sugarcane genotypes cultivated under water deficit conditions imposed during the initial growth phase. Experiments were performed in a greenhouse using two sugarcane genotypes namely: HoCP93-776 (drought susceptible) and TCP02-4587 (drought tolerant). Sixty days after planting, two different water treatments were applied (i.e., with or without water deficit). At 0,30 and 60 days after the treatment, gas exchange variables were evaluated for their relationship with water use, intrinsic instantaneous water use efficiency and instantaneous carboxylation efficiency. The SPAD index, photosynthetic pigments, water potential and relative water content in the leaves were also analyzed. The genotype HoCP93-776 was more sensitive to drought treatment as indicated by the significantly lower values of SPAD index, photosynthetic pigments, water potential (Ψw) and relative water content (RWC) variables. The genotype TCP02-4587 had higher water potential, stomatal control efficiency, water use efficiency (WUE), intrinsic instantaneous water use efficiency (WUEintr), instantaneous carboxylation efficiency and photosynthetic capacity. The highest air vapor pressure deficit during the drought conditions could be due to the stomatal closing in the HoCP93-776, which contributed to its lower photosynthetic capacity.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate (1) the influence of complete denture quality and years of denture use on masticatory efficiency and (2) the relationship between complete denture quality and years of use. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 93 edentulous patients (mean age: 65.6 years) wearing both mandibular and maxillary dentures. Patients were classified into two categories according to years of denture use: <= 2 years and >= 5 years. Masticatory efficiency was evaluated via the colorimetric method with beads as the artificial test food. A reproducible method for objective evaluation of the technical quality of complete dentures was employed. The association between denture quality and years of denture use was analyzed using chi-square and Fisher exact tests. The results of masticatory efficiency testing were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance (with the Tukey post hoc test) in terms of years of denture use <= 2 years, >= 5 years) and denture quality (poor, average, good). Results: A significant relationship was found between denture quality and years of denture use (P < .05). Masticatory efficiency differed significantly (P < .05) between patients with <= 2 years of denture use (0.101 +/- 0.076 absorbance) and >= 5 years of use (0.068 +/- 0.076 absorbance). Masticatory efficiency was not influenced by denture quality. Conclusions: Complete denture quality and masticatory efficiency significantly decreased over time. However, complete denture quality did not influence masticatory efficiency. Int J Prosthodont 2012;25:625-630.

Selective modulation of liver X receptor beta (LXR beta) has been recognized as an important approach to prevent or reverse the atherosclerotic process. In the present work, we have developed robust conformation-independent fragment-based quantitative structure-activity and structure-selectivity relationship models for a series of quinolines and cinnolines as potent modulators of the two LXR sub-types. The generated models were then used to predict the potency of an external test set and the predicted values were in good agreement with the experimental results, indicating the potential of the models for untested compounds. The final 2D molecular recognition patterns obtained were integrated to 3D structure-based molecular modeling studies to provide useful insights into the chemical and structural determinants for increased LXR beta binding affinity and selectivity. Advances in metastability exchange optical pumping (MEOP) of 3He at high laser powers, with its various applications, but also at high gas pressures p3 and high magnetic field strengths B, have provided strong motivation for revisiting the understanding and for investigating the limitations of this powerful technique. For this purpose, we present systematic experimental and theoretical studies of efficiency and of relaxation mechanisms in B≤30 mT and p3=0.63−2.45 mbar. 3He nuclear polarisation is measured by light absorption in longitudinal configuration where weak light beams at 1083 nm parallel to magnetic field and cell axis with opposite circular polarisations are used to probe the distribution of populations in the metastable state. This method is systematically tested to evaluate potential systematic biases and is shown to be reliable for the study of OP dynamics despite the redistribution of populations by OP light. Nuclear polarisation loss associated to the emission of polarised light by the plasma discharge used for MEOP is found to decrease above 10 mT, as expected, due to hyperfine decoupling in highly excited states. However, this does not lead to improved MEOP efficiency at high laser power. We find clear evidence of additional laser-induced relaxation instead. The strong OP-enhanced polarisation losses, currently limiting MEOP performances, are quantitatively investigated using an angular momentum budget approach and a recently developed comprehensive model that describes the combined effects of OP, ME and relaxation, validated by comparison to experimental results.

Diese Arbeit widmet sich der Untersuchung der photophysikalischen Prozesse, die in Mischungen von Elektronendonoren mit Elektronenakzeptoren zur Anwendung in organischen Solarzellen auftreten. Als Elektronendonoren werden das Copolymer PBDTTT-C, das aus Benzodithiophen- und Thienothiophene-Einheiten besteht, und das kleine Molekül p-DTS(FBTTh2)2, welches Silizium-überbrücktes Dithiophen, sowie fluoriertes Benzothiadiazol und Dithiophen beinhaltet, verwendet. Als Elektronenakzeptor finden ein planares 3,4:9,10-Perylentetracarbonsäurediimid-(PDI)-Derivat und verschiedene Fullerenderivate Anwendung. PDI-Derivate gelten als vielversprechende Alternativen zu Fullerenen aufgrund der durch chemische Synthese abstimmbaren strukturellen, optischen und elektronischen Eigenschaften. Das gewichtigste Argument für PDI-Derivate ist deren Absorption im sichtbaren Bereich des Sonnenspektrums was den Photostrom verbessern kann. Fulleren-basierte Mischungen übertreffen jedoch für gewöhnlich die Effizienz von Donor-PDI-Mischungen.rnUm den Nachteil der PDI-basierten Mischungen im Vergleich zu den entsprechenden Fulleren-basierten Mischungen zu identifizieren, werden die verschiedenen Donor-Akzeptor-Kombinationen auf ihre optischen, elektronischen und strukturellen Eigenschaften untersucht. Zeitaufgelöste Spektroskopie, vor allem transiente Absorptionsspektroskopie (TA), wird zur Analyse der Ladungsgeneration angewendet und der Vergleich der Donor-PDI Mischfilme mit den Donor-Fulleren Mischfilmen zeigt, dass die Bildung von Ladungstransferzuständen einen der Hauptverlustkanäle darstellt.rnWeiterhin werden Mischungen aus PBDTTT-C und [6,6]-Phenyl-C61-buttersäuremethylesther (PC61BM) mittels TA-Spektroskopie auf einer Zeitskala von ps bis µs untersucht und es kann gezeigt werden, dass der Triplettzustand des Polymers über die nicht-geminale Rekombination freier Ladungen auf einer sub-ns Zeitskala bevölkert wird. Hochentwickelte Methoden zur Datenanalyse, wie multivariate curve resolution (MCR), werden angewendet um überlagernde Datensignale zu trennen. Zusätzlich kann die Regeneration von Ladungsträgern durch Triplett-Triplett-Annihilation auf einer ns-µs Zeitskala gezeigt werden. Darüber hinaus wird der Einfluss des Lösungsmitteladditivs 1,8-Diiodooctan (DIO) auf die Leistungsfähigkeit von p-DTS(FBTTh2)2:PDI Solarzellen untersucht. Die Erkenntnisse von morphologischen und photophysikalischen Experimenten werden kombiniert, um die strukturellen Eigenschaften und die Photophysik mit den relevanten Kenngrößen des Bauteils in Verbindung zu setzen. Zeitaufgelöste Photolumineszenzmessungen (time-resolved photoluminescence, TRPL) zeigen, dass der Einsatz von DIO zu einer geringeren Reduzierung der Photolumineszenz führt, was auf eine größere Phasentrennung zurückgeführt werden kann. Außerdem kann mittels TA Spektroskopie gezeigt werden, dass die Verwendung von DIO zu einer verbesserten Kristallinität der aktiven Schicht führt und die Generation freier Ladungen fördert. Zur genauen Analyse des Signalzerfalls wird ein Modell angewendet, das den gleichzeitigen Zerfall gebundener CT-Zustände und freier Ladungen berücksichtigt und optimierte Donor-Akzeptor-Mischungen zeigen einen größeren Anteil an nicht-geminaler Rekombination freier Ladungsträger.rnIn einer weiteren Fallstudie wird der Einfluss des Fullerenderivats, namentlich IC60BA und PC71BM, auf die Leistungsfähigkeit und Photophysik der Solarzellen untersucht. Eine Kombination aus einer Untersuchung der Struktur des Dünnfilms sowie zeitaufgelöster Spektroskopie ergibt, dass Mischungen, die ICBA als Elektronenakzeptor verwenden, eine schlechtere Trennung von Ladungstransferzuständen zeigen und unter einer stärkeren geminalen Rekombination im Vergleich zu PCBM-basierten Mischungen leiden. Dies kann auf die kleinere Triebkraft zur Ladungstrennung sowie auf die höhere Unordnung der ICBA-basierten Mischungen, die die Ladungstrennung hemmen, zurückgeführt werden. Außerdem wird der Einfluss reiner Fullerendomänen auf die Funktionsfähigkeit organischer Solarzellen, die aus Mischungen des Thienothienophen-basierenden Polymers pBTTT-C14 und PC61BM bestehen, untersucht. Aus diesem Grund wird die Photophysik von Filmen mit einem Donor-Akzeptor-Mischungsverhältnis von 1:1 sowie 1:4 verglichen. Während 1:1-Mischungen lediglich eine co-kristalline Phase, in der Fullerene zwischen den Seitenketten von pBTTT interkalieren, zeigen, resultiert der Überschuss an Fulleren in den 1:4-Proben in der Ausbildung reiner Fullerendomänen zusätzlich zu der co kristallinen Phase. Transiente Absorptionsspektroskopie verdeutlicht, dass Ladungstransferzustände in 1:1-Mischungen hauptsächlich über geminale Rekombination zerfallen, während in 1:4 Mischungen ein beträchtlicher Anteil an Ladungen ihre wechselseitige Coulombanziehung überwinden und freie Ladungsträger bilden kann, die schließlich nicht-geminal rekombinieren.

Whilst estimation of the marginal (total) causal effect of a point exposure on an outcome is arguably the most common objective of experimental and observational studies in the health and social sciences, in recent years, investigators have also become increasingly interested in mediation analysis. Specifically, upon establishing a non-null total effect of the exposure, investigators routinely wish to make inferences about the direct (indirect) pathway of the effect of the exposure not through (through) a mediator variable that occurs subsequently to the exposure and prior to the outcome. Although powerful semiparametric methodologies have been developed to analyze observational studies, that produce double robust and highly efficient estimates of the marginal total causal effect, similar methods for mediation analysis are currently lacking. Thus, this paper develops a general semiparametric framework for obtaining inferences about so-called marginal natural direct and indirect causal effects, while appropriately accounting for a large number of pre-exposure confounding factors for the exposure and the mediator variables. Our analytic framework is particularly appealing, because it gives new insights on issues of efficiency and robustness in the context of mediation analysis. In particular, we propose new multiply robust locally efficient estimators of the marginal natural indirect and direct causal effects, and develop a novel double robust sensitivity analysis framework for the assumption of ignorability of the mediator variable.

The plant PTR/NRT1 (peptide transporter/nitrate transporter 1) gene family comprises di/tripeptide and low-affinity nitrate transporters; some members also recognize other substrates such as carboxylates, phytohormones (auxin and abscisic acid), or defence compounds (glucosinolates). Little is known about the members of this gene family in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Here, we report the influence of altered OsPTR9 expression on nitrogen utilization efficiency, growth, and grain yield. OsPTR9 expression is regulated by exogenous nitrogen and by the day-night cycle. Elevated expression of OsPTR9 in transgenic rice plants resulted in enhanced ammonium uptake, promotion of lateral root formation and increased grain yield. On the other hand, down-regulation of OsPTR9 in a T-DNA insertion line (osptr9) and in OsPTR9-RNAi rice plants had the opposite effect. These results suggest that OsPTR9 might hold potential for improving nitrogen utilization efficiency and grain yield in rice breeding.

The range of novel psychoactive substances (NPS) including phenethylamines, cathinones, piperazines, tryptamines, etc. is continuously growing. Therefore, fast and reliable screening methods for these compounds are essential and needed. The use of dried blood spots (DBS) for a fast straightforward approach helps to simplify and shorten sample preparation significantly. DBS were produced from 10 µl of whole blood and extracted offline with 500 µl methanol followed by evaporation and reconstitution in mobile phase. Reversed-phase chromatographic separation and mass spectrometric detection (RP-LC-MS/MS) was achieved within a run time of 10 min. The screening method was validated by evaluating the following parameters: limit of detection (LOD), matrix effect, selectivity and specificity, extraction efficiency, and short-term and long-term stability. Furthermore, the method was applied to authentic samples and results were compared with those obtained with a validated whole blood method used for Routine analysis of NPS. LOD was between 1 and 10 ng/ml. No interference from Matrix compounds was observed. The method was proven to be specific and selective for the analytes, although with limitations for 3-FMC/flephedrone and MDDMA/MDEA. Mean extraction efficiency was 84.6 %. All substances were stable in DBS for at least a week when cooled. Cooling was essential for the stability of cathinones. Prepared samples were stable for at least 3 days. Comparison to the validated whole blood method yielded similar results. DBS were shown to be useful in developing a rapid screening method for NPS with simplified sample preparation. The concentration of 11-nor-9-carboxy-Δ(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THCCOOH) in whole blood is used as a parameter for assessing the consumption behavior of cannabis consumers. The blood level of THCCOOH-glucuronide might provide additional information about the frequency of cannabis use. To verify this assumption, a column-switching liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for the rapid and direct quantification of free and glucuronidated THCCOOH in human whole blood was newly developed. The method comprised protein precipitation, followed by injection of the processed sample onto a trapping column and subsequent gradient elution to an analytical column for separation and detection. The total LC run time was 4.5 min. Detection of the analytes was accomplished by electrospray ionization in positive ion mode and selected reaction monitoring using a triple-stage quadrupole mass spectrometer. The method was fully validated by evaluating the following parameters: linearity, lower limit of quantification, accuracy and imprecision, selectivity, extraction efficiency, matrix effect, carry-over, dilution integrity, analyte stability, and re-injection reproducibility. All acceptance criteria were analyzed and the predefined criteria met. Linearity ranged from 5.0 to 500 μg/L for both analytes. The method was successfully applied to whole blood samples from a large collective of cannabis consumers, demonstrating its applicability in the forensic field.

Glutamate transporters maintain synaptic concentration of the excitatory neurotransmitter below neurotoxic levels. Their transport cycle consists of cotransport of glutamate with three sodium ions and one proton, followed by countertransport of potassium. Structural studies proposed that a highly conserved serine located in the binding pocket of the homologous GltPh coordinates l-aspartate as well as the sodium ion Na1. To experimentally validate these findings, we generated and characterized several mutants of the corresponding serine residue, Ser-364, of human glutamate transporter SLC1A2 (solute carrier family 1 member 2), also known as glutamate transporter GLT-1 and excitatory amino acid transporter EAAT2. S364T, S364A, S364C, S364N, and S364D were expressed in HEK cells and Xenopus laevis oocytes to measure radioactive substrate transport and transport currents, respectively. All mutants exhibited similar plasma membrane expression when compared with WT SLC1A2, but substitutions of serine by aspartate or asparagine completely abolished substrate transport. On the other hand, the threonine mutant, which is a more conservative mutation, exhibited similar substrate selectivity, substrate and sodium affinities as WT but a lower selectivity for Na(+) over Li(+). S364A and S364C exhibited drastically reduced affinities for each substrate and enhanced selectivity for l-aspartate over d-aspartate and l-glutamate, and lost their selectivity for Na(+) over Li(+). Furthermore, we extended the analysis of our experimental observations using molecular dynamics simulations. Altogether, our findings confirm a pivotal role of the serine 364, and more precisely its hydroxyl group, in coupling sodium and substrate fluxes.

India's public sector banks (PSBs) are compared unfavorably with their private sector counterparts, domestic and foreign. This comparison rests, for the most part, on financial measures of performance, and such a comparison provides much of the rationale for privatization of PSBs.In this paper, we attempt a comparison between PSBs and their private sector counterparts based on measures of productivity that use quantities of outputs and inputs. We employ two measures of productivity: Tornqvist and Malmquist total factor productivity growth. We attempt these comparisons over the period 1992-2000, comparing PSBs with both domestic private and foreign banks. Out of a total of four comparisons we have made, there are no differences in three cases, PSBs do better in two, and foreign banks in one. To put it differently, PSBs are seen to be at a disadvantage in only one out of six comparisons. It is difficult, therefore, to sustain the proposition that efficiency and productivity have been lower in public sector banks relative to their peers in the private sector.

This paper empirically estimates and analyzes various efficiency scores of Indian banks during 1997-2003 using data envelopment analysis (DEA). During the 1990s India's financial sector underwent a process of gradual liberalization aimed at strengthening and improving the operational efficiency of the financial system. It is observed, none the less, that Indian banks are still not much differentiated in terms of input or output oriented technical efficiency and cost efficiency. However, they differ sharply in respect of revenue and profit efficiencies. The results provide interesting insight into the empirical correlates of efficiency scores of Indian banks. Bank size, ownership, and the fact of its being listed on the stock exchange are some of the factors that are found to have positive impact on the average profit efficiency and to some extent revenue efficiency scores are. Finally, we observe that the median efficiency scores of Indian banks in general and of bigger banks in particular have improved considerably during the post-reform period.
