Check-up is a frequent motivation for patients to see their general practitioner. The challenge lies in the choice of screening tools to accomplish an efficient, individual and age-adapted approach. In this article we review evidence-based screening methods, whose efficacy has been demonstrated by randomized clinical trials, as well as their application in clinical practice. While cardiovascular check-up has a high grade of evidence for nearly all patients, counselling to lifestyle change except for smoking cessation has been proved with lower evidence. In contrast, relatively new is the fact that ultrasound to screen for an abdominal aortic aneurysm is useful among men smokers or past smokers between 65 and 75 years old.

Effective visual exploration is required for many activities of daily living and instruments to assess visual exploration are important for the evaluation of the visual and the oculomotor system. In this article, the development of a new instrument to measure central and peripheral target recognition is described. The measurement setup consists of a hemispherical projection which allows presenting images over a large area of ±90° horizontal and vertical angle. In a feasibility study with 14 younger (21–49 years) and 12 older (50–78 years) test persons, 132 targets and 24 distractors were presented within naturalistic color photographs of everyday scenes at 10°, 30°, and 50° eccentricity. After the experiment, both younger and older participants reported in a questionnaire that the task is easy to understand, fun and that it measures a competence that is relevant for activities of daily living. A main result of the pilot study was that younger participants recognized more targets with smaller reaction times than older participants. The group differences were most pronounced for peripheral target detection. This test is feasible and appropriate to assess the functional field of view in younger and older adults.

Magnetic resonance imaging, with its exquisite soft tissue contrast, is an ideal modality for investigating spinal cord pathology. While conventional MRI techniques are very sensitive for spinal cord pathology, their specificity is somewhat limited. Diffusion MRI is an advanced technique which is a very sensitive and specific indicator of the integrity of white matter tracts. Diffusion imaging has been shown to detect early ischemic changes in white matter, while conventional imaging demonstrates no change. By acquiring the complete apparent diffusion tensor (ADT), tissue diffusion properties can be expressed in terms of quantitative and rotationally invariant parameters. ^ Systematic study of SCI in vivo requires controlled animal models such as the popular rat model. To date, studies of spinal cord using ADT imaging have been performed exclusively in fixed, excised spinal cords, introducing inevitable artifacts and losing the benefits of MRI's noninvasive nature. In vivo imaging reflects the actual in vivo tissue properties, and allows each animal to be imaged at multiple time points, greatly reducing the number of animals required to achieve statistical significance. Because the spinal cord is very small, the available signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is very low. Prior spin-echo based ADT studies of rat spinal cord have relied on high magnetic field strengths and long imaging times—on the order of 10 hours—for adequate SNR. Such long imaging times are incompatible with in vivo imaging, and are not relevant for imaging the early phases following SCI. Echo planar imaging (EPI) is one of the fastest imaging methods, and is popular for diffusion imaging. However, EPI further lowers the image SNR, and is very sensitive to small imperfections in the magnetic field, such as those introduced by the bony spine. Additionally, The small field-of-view (FOV) needed for spinal cord imaging requires large imaging gradients which generate EPI artifacts. The addition of diffusion gradients introduces yet further artifacts. ^ This work develops a method for rapid EPI-based in vivo diffusion imaging of rat spinal cord. The method involves improving the SNR using an implantable coil; reducing magnetic field inhomogeneities by means of an autoshim, and correcting EPI artifacts by post-processing. New EPI artifacts due to diffusion gradients described, and post-processing correction techniques are developed. ^ These techniques were used to obtain rotationally invariant diffusion parameters from 9 animals in vivo, and were validated using the gold-standard, but slow, spinecho based diffusion sequence. These are the first reported measurements of the ADT in spinal cord in vivo . ^ Many of the techniques described are equally applicable toward imaging of human spinal cord. We anticipate that these techniques will aid in evaluating and optimizing potential therapies, and will lead to improved patient care. ^

In the California Current System, strong mesoscale variability associated with eddies and meanders of the coastal jet play an important role in the biological productivity of the area. To assess the dominant timescales of variability, a wavelet analysis is applied to almost nine years (October 1997 to July 2006) of 1-km-resolution, 5-day-averaged, Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) chlorophyll a (chl a) concentration data. The dominant periods of chlorophyll variance, and how these change in time, are quantified as a function of distance offshore. The maximum variance in chlorophyll occurs with a period of similar to 100-200 days. A seasonal cycle in the timing of peak variance is revealed, with maxima in spring/summer close to shore (20 km) and in autumn/winter 200 km offshore. Interannual variability in the magnitude of chlorophyll variance shows maxima in 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2005. There is a very strong out-of-phase correspondence between the time series of chlorophyll variance and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) index. We hypothesize that positive PDO conditions, which reflect weak winds and poor upwelling conditions, result in reduced mesoscale variability in the coastal region, and a subsequent decrease in chlorophyll variance. Although the chlorophyll variance responds to basin-scale forcing, chlorophyll biomass does not necessarily correspond to the phase of the PDO, suggesting that it is influenced more by local-scale processes. The mesoscale variability in the system may be as important as the chl a biomass in determining the potential productivity of higher trophic levels.

In absence of basic canine hip biomechanics, a specific, consequent three dimensional concept to evaluate the coxofemoral joint was developed for the dog. With the help of a new method to radiologically demonstrate the hip in a physiological standing position several new clinically relevant aspects could be further investigated. For example the breed specific anatomical differences in the hip, and dynamics and the background on "iatrogenic luxations" in HD diagnostics could be shown. The caudal luxation and the growth abnormalities of the hip and their consequences on the whole leg (antetorsion syndrome) as a consequence of inadequate breeding could be demonstrated.

This introductory chapter briefly introduces a few milestones in the voluminous previous literature on semantic roles, and charts the territory in which the papers of this volume aim to make a contribution. This territory is characterized by fairly disparate conceptualizations of semantic roles and their status in theories of grammar and the lexicon, as well as by diverse and probably complementary ways of deriving or identifying them based on linguistic data. Particular attention is given to the question of how selected roles appear to relate to each other, and we preliminarily address the issue of how roles, subroles, and role complexes are best thought of in general.

PURPOSE To analyze available evidence on the incidence of anatomical variations or disease of the maxillary sinuses as identified by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in dentistry. MATERIALS AND METHODS A focused question was developed to search the electronic databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Oral Health Group Trials Register, and CENTRAL and identify all relevant papers published between 1980 and January 19, 2013. Unpublished literature at ClinicalTrials.gov, in the National Research Register, and in the Pro-Quest Dissertation Abstracts and Thesis database was also included. Studies were included irrespective of language. These results were supplemented by hand and gray literature searches. RESULTS Twenty-two studies were identified. Twenty were retrospective cohort studies, one was a prospective cohort study, and one was a case control study. The main indication for CBCT was dental implant treatment planning, and the majority of studies used a small field of view for imaging. The most common anatomical variations included increased thickness of the sinus membrane, the presence of sinus septa, and pneumatization. Reported sinus disease frequency varied widely, ranging from 14.3% to 82%. There was a wide range in the reported prevalence of mucosal thickening related to apical pathology, the degree of lumenal opacification, features of sinusitis, and the presence of retention cysts and polyps. More pathologic findings in the maxillary sinus were reported in men than in women, and the medial wall and sinus floor were most frequently affected. CONCLUSION CBCT is used primarily to evaluate bony anatomy and to screen for overt pathology of the maxillary sinuses prior to dental implant treatment. Differences in the classification of mucosal findings are problematic in the consistent and valid assessment of health and disease of the maxillary sinus.

Motivated by the perception that human and veterinary medicines can cooperate in more ways than just fighting zoonoses, the authors organized a roundtable during the 2013 annual meeting of the International Society for Disease Surveillance (ISDS). Collaborations between human and animal health sectors were reported to often rise in response to zoonotic outbreaks (during crisis time) and be mainly based on personal networks. Ways to maintain and strengthen these links were discussed.

The goal of the present article is to introduce dual-process theories – in particular the default-interventionist model – as an overarching framework for attention-related research in sports. Dual-process theories propose that two different types of processing guide human behavior. Type 1 processing is independent of available working memory capacity (WMC), whereas Type 2 processing depends on available working memory capacity. We review the latest theoretical developments on dual-process theories and present evidence for the validity of dual-process theories from various domains. We demonstrate how existing sport psychology findings can be integrated within the dual-process framework. We illustrate how future sport psychology research might benefit from adopting the dual-process framework as a meta-theoretical framework by arguing that the complex interplay between Type 1 and Type 2 processing has to be taken into account in order to gain a more complete understanding of the dynamic nature of attentional processing during sport performance at varying levels of expertise. Finally, we demonstrate that sport psychology applications might benefit from the dual-process perspective as well: dual-process theories are able to predict which behaviors can be more successfully executed when relying on Type 1 processing and which behaviors benefit from Type 2 processing.

Methods for tracking an object have generally fallen into two groups: tracking by detection and tracking through local optimization. The advantage of detection-based tracking is its ability to deal with target appearance and disappearance, but it does not naturally take advantage of target motion continuity during detection. The advantage of local optimization is efficiency and accuracy, but it requires additional algorithms to initialize tracking when the target is lost. To bridge these two approaches, we propose a framework for unified detection and tracking as a time-series Bayesian estimation problem. The basis of our approach is to treat both detection and tracking as a sequential entropy minimization problem, where the goal is to determine the parameters describing a target in each frame. To do this we integrate the Active Testing (AT) paradigm with Bayesian filtering, and this results in a framework capable of both detecting and tracking robustly in situations where the target object enters and leaves the field of view regularly. We demonstrate our approach on a retinal tool tracking problem and show through extensive experiments that our method provides an efficient and robust tracking solution.
