The structure and the ionic conduction properties of siloxane-poly(oxypropylene) (PPO) hybrids doped with different potassium salts (KCF3SO3, KI, KClO4 and KNO2) are reported for two polymer molecular weights (300 and 4000 g/mol), labelled PPO300 and PPO4000, respectively. The doping concentration, related to the concentration of the ether type oxygen of the PPO chain, is the same whatever the salt and verifies [O]/[K] = 20. Ionic room temperature conductivity shows the highest value for the KCF3SO3 doped PPO4000 hybrid (4 x 10(-7)Omega(-1).cm(-1)). The structure of these hybrids was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS and XANES) at the potassium K-edge (3607 eV). XRPD results show that the hybrid matrix is always amorphous and the formation of secondary potassium phases is observed for all the samples, except for the KCF3SO3 doped PPO4000 hybrid. EXAFS results evidence a good correlation between the ionic conductivity and the presence of oxygen atoms as first neighbours around potassium.

The electrical characteristics of oxidized poly(thionaphtheneindole) were investigated as a function of ambient relative humidity (r.h.). The current flowing through a pressed pellet of material between two massive gold electrodes plotted against voltage gives a wave-shaped curve with a halfwave potential at V = similar to 3 V. The current recorded at 4 V (plateau of the wave) is a sigmoidal function of r.h, with the inflexion point at similar to 60%. An interpretation of these findings is given, based on the influence of water on the dielectric constant of the material and on acid-base equilibrium between poly(thionaphtheneindole) and water, from which protons are produced. The behaviour of poly (thionaphtheneindole) as the active component of an amperometric humidity sensor is also reported.

An experimental study of the temperature dependent dc electrical conductivity of doped poly (p-phenylene) in the range of 50-300 K has been presented. The results have been analyzed in the framework of some hopping models. We have observed that hopping models are not consistent with the temperature dependence of the conductivity data over the entire temperature range of measurement. We find that the logarithmic conductivity is proportional to T-beta, wherethe exponent beta is independent of temperature. It is shown that the most probable transport process in this material for the entire range of temperature is due to multiphonon-assisted hopping of the charge carriers that interact weakly with phonons. The parameters obtained from the fits of the experimental data to this model appear reasonable.

The effect of the Sb addition on the microstructural and electrical conductivity of the SnO2 thin film was studied in this work. Experimental results show that the Sb addition allowed to control the grain size and electrical conductivity of the SnO2 thin film, resulting in a nanostructured material. The nanostructured Sb-doped SnO2 thin films present high electrical conductivity, even in the presence of high porosity, supporting the hypothesis that nanostructured material must possess strong electrical conductivity. This work involves important aspects that can be applied to the development of high performance transparent conducting thin film. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The evaluation of free carrier concentration based on Drude's theory can be performed by the use of optical transmittance in the range 800-2000 nm (near infrared) for Sb-doped SnO2 thin films. In this article, we estimate the free carrier concentration for these films, which are deposited via sol-gel dip-coating. At approximately 900 mn, there is a separation among transmittance curves of doped and undoped samples. The plasma resonance phenomena approach leads to free carrier concentration of about 5 x 1020 cm(-3). The increase in the Sb concentration increases the film conductivity; however, the magnitude of measured resistivity is still very high. The only way to combine such a high free carrier concentration with a rather low conductivity is to have a very low mobility. It becomes possible when the crystallite dimensions are taken into account. We obtain grains with 5 nm of average size by estimating the grain size from X-ray diffraction data, and by using line broadening in the diffraction pattern. The low conductivity is due to very intense scattering at the grain boundary, which is created by the presence of a large amount of nanoscopic crystallites. Such a result is in accordance with X-ray photoemission spectroscopy data that pointed to Sb incorporation proportional to the free electron concentration, evaluated according to Drude's model. We report the preparation and characterization of yttria-stabilized zirconia/nickel oxide composites (YSZ/NiO). This composite is the precursor material of the cermet YSZ/Ni, which is used as solid oxide fuel cell anode material. The performance of the anode is strongly dependent on the microstructural properties of the cermet. Therefore, the control of the microstructure of the YSZ/NiO composite is a key step for the fabrication of high-performance anodes. In this study, the composites were prepared by a modified liquid mixture technique. Scanning electron microscopy analysis evidenced the good dispersion of the phases and that NiO nanoparticles are spread over the YSZ surface. Sintered pellets were studied by X-ray diffraction and impedance spectroscopy. The main results show that the composite is comprised of a well-dispersed mixture of the two phases. The electrical conductivity data show that there is a strong dependence of the transport mechanism on the relative composition of phases. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Electrical conductivity and thermoelectric power measurements carried out in a heamatite ceramic showed a strong anisotropy in directions normal and parallel to the uniaxial pressing direction. This behaviour is similar to that verified in alpha-Fe2O3 single crystal. The results suggest that the extended structural defects, generated during sintering, disturb the magnetic order on the (001) planes of alpha-Fe2O3 and limit the mobility of n type carriers.

The alternating conductivity, sigma*(f) = sigma'(f) + i sigma ''(f), of in situ polymerized polyaniline thin films doped with hydrochloric acid, deposited on top of an interdigitated gold line array previously deposited on glass substrates, were measured in the frequency (f) range between 0.1 Hz to 10 MHz and in the temperature range from 100 to 430 K. The results for sigma'(f) are typical of a disordered solid material: for frequencies lower than a certain hopping frequency gamma(hop), log[sigma'(f)] is frequency-independent rising almost linearly for in logf > gamma(hop). A master curve was thus obtained by plotting the real component of the conductivity using normalized scales sigma'(f)/sigma(dc) and f/gamma(hop) which is indicative of a single process operating in the whole frequency range. An expression encompassing the conduction through a disordered structure taken from previous random free energy barrier model for hopping carriers, as well a dielectric function to represent the capacitive behavior of the PAni was employed to fit the experimental results. The dielectric constant and activation energy for hopping carriers were obtained as function of the polymer doping level. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effect of Sb doping in SnO2 thin films prepared by the sol-gel dip-coating (SGDC) process is investigated. Electronic and structural properties are evaluated through synchrotron radiation measurements by EXAFS and XANES. These data indicate that antimony is in the oxidation state W, and replaces tin atoms (Sn4+), at a grain surface site. Although the substitution yields net free carrier concentration, the electrical conductivity is increased only slightly, because it is reduced by the high grain boundary scattering. The overall picture leads to a shortening of the grain boundary potential, where oxygen vacancies compensate for oxygen adsorbed species, decreasing the trapped charge at grain boundary. The temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity and the F-19 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of PbGeO3-PbF2CdF, glasses and glass ceramics are investigated. The measured conductivity values of the glasses are above 10(-5) Skin at 500 K, and increase with increasing lead fluoride content. Activation energies extracted from the conductivity data are in the range 0.59-0.73 eV. Results are consistent with the hypothesis that in these oxyfluoride glasses lead fluoride rich clusters are dispersed in a metagermanate based matrix providing increasing mobility pathways for conducting ions. The conductivity of a sample of the glass ceramic of composition (mol%) 60PbGeO(3-)20PbF(2)-20CdF(2) was found to be smaller than that in the corresponding glass, suggesting that there are poor ionic conducting regions in the interface between the nanometer sized crystals. The temperature dependence of the F-19 relaxation times, measured in the range 100-800 K, exhibit the qualitative features associated with high fluorine mobility in both, glass and glass ceramics materials. We suggest that de-convolution of the spin-lattice relaxation rates observed in the glass ceramics shows that the observed high temperature rate maximum is associated with the diffusional motions of the fluorine ions in beta-PbF2 crystals. We performed a comparative study of electrical and thermal properties of ZnO- and SnO2-based varistor. The electrical properties of commercial ZnO-based varistor are equivalent to that found in SnO2-based varistor system. In spite of this, the SnO2 showed a thermal conductivity higher than commercial samples of ZnO-based varistor, which allied with its simpler microstructure and lower dopant concentration is a remarkable result that point out to the use of this system to compete commercially with ZnO-based varistor devices.

This work illustrates the advancement of research on TiO2-based electroceramics. In this work will be presented that the addition of different dopants, as well as thermal treatments at oxidizing and inert atmosphere, influences of the densification, the mean grain size and the electrical properties of the TiO2-based varistor ceramics. Dopants like Ta2O5, Nb2O5, and Cr2O3 have an especial role in the barrier formation at the grain boundary in the TiO2 varistors, increasing the nonlinear coefficient and decreasing the breakdown electric field. The influence of Cr'(Ti) is to increase the O' and O'(2) adsorption at the grain boundary interface and to promote a decrease in the conductivity by donating electrons to O-2 adsorbed at the grain boundary. In this paper, TiO2 and (Sn,Ti)O-2-based studies of polycrystalline ceramics, which show a non-linear I-V electrical response typical of low voltage varistor systems are also presented. All these systems are potentially promising for varistor applications. (C) 2004 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

We report on electrical relaxation measurements of (1-x)NH4H2PO4-xTiO(2) (x = 0.1) composites by admittance spectroscopy, in the 40-Hz-5-MHz frequency range and at temperatures between 303 and 563 K. Simultaneous thermal and electrical measurements on the composites identify a stable crystalline phase between 373 and 463 K. The real part of the conductivity, sigma', shows a power-law frequency dependence below 523 K, which is well described by Jonscher's expression sigma' = sigma(0)(1 + (omega/omega(p))(n)), where sigma(0) is the dc conductivity, omega(p)/2 pi = f(p) is a characteristic relaxation frequency, and n is a fractional exponent between 0 and 1. Both sigma(0) and f(p) are thermally activated with nearly the same activation energy in the II region, indicating that the dispersive conductivity originates from the migration of protons. However, activation energies decrease from 0.55 to 0.35 eV and n increases toward 1.0, as the concentration of TiO2 nanoparticles increases, thus, enhancing cooperative correlation among moving ions. The highest dc conductivity is obtained for the composite x = 0.05 concentration, with values above room temperature about three orders of magnitude higher than that of crystalline NH4H2PO4 (ADP), reaching values on the order of 0.1 (Omega cm)(-1) above 543 K.
