The need for renewable energy sources, facing the consequences of Climate Change, results in growing investment for solar collectors’ use. Research in this field has accompanied this expansion and evacuated tube solar collector stands as an important study focus. Thus, several works have been published for representing the stratification of the fluid inside the tubes and the reservoir, as well as analytical modeling for the heat flow problem. Based on recent publications, this paper proposes the study of solar water heating with evacuated tubes, their operation characteristics and operating parameters. To develop this work, a computational tool will be used - in this case, the application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. In possession of the implemented model, a numerical simulation will be performed to evaluate the behavior of the fluid within this solar collector and possible improvements to be applied in the model.

Solar heaters are an appropriate technology in tropical and sub-tropical climates to heat bath water by solar energy. Low-cost solar heaters meet the demand of low-income rural communities which currently do not have access to this technology. Current research analyzes the economic viability of solar heaters, built with recyclable materials, to reduce electric energy bill. A solar heating system was built consisting of recyclable materials in accordance with the manuals provided by the Secretariat of Environment of the state of Paraná (SEMA). Duration of use of electric showers by families of rural properties was determined to calculate expenses and billing of electricity. Simulation and material costs showed that the system was feasible. Commercial solar heaters could be replaced at a cost of R$ 22.61 per month during 13 months.

The Earth receives annually 1,5.1018 kWh of solar energy, which corresponds to 1000 times the world energy consumption in this period. This fact comes out that, besides being responsible for the maintenance of life on Earth, the solar radiation is in an inexhaustible energy source, with an enormous potential for use by systems capture and conversion into another form of energy. In many applications of low power systems that convert light directly into electricity, called photovoltaic advantageously replace other means of production processes, where its distribution is very significant. The determination of the power generated by such a system is of paramount importance for the design energy of its implementation and evaluation of the system itself. This study aims to determine a relationship between the maximum power generated by solar photovoltaic and characteristic parameters of the generator. This relationship allows to evaluate the performance of such a system. For simulations of the developed equations were used 3 photovoltaic modules with an output of 100 Wp each, and data collection was performed during one year by enrolling in addition to meteorological data, solar irradiance incident on the modules.

This work presents a self-sustainable lighting system using ultracapacitor as a storage device, replacing the conventional battery, using solar energy as the only energy supplier. A detailed study of solar panels, switched mode converters and ultracapacitors was made, in order to design a circuit capable of capturing solar energy and transfer it efficiently to a bank of ultracapacitors. Later, at nighttime, this energy is used for lighting in LED luminaires which have high luminous efficiency and high reliability index. This work presents the design of the solar panel, ultracapacitors bank, the development of the voltage converter circuit and charger working at the maximum power point of the solar panel. All subsystems were simulated and it was shown that the use of ultracapacitors is feasible to feed a LED lamp with enough brightness for a person to walk at night, for two night shifts, using a capacitive bank with twenty-four ultracapacitors. Replacing the battery by an ultracapacitor allows a faster recharge, with low maintenance costs, since ultracapacitors have a lifetime bigger than batteries; beyond reducing the environmental impact, as they don't use potentially toxic chemical compounds

In October 2008, the Brazilian Government announced plans to invest US$212 billion in the construction of nuclear power plants, totaling a joint capacity of 60,000 MW. Apart from this program, officials had already announced the completion of the construction of the nuclear plant Angra III; the construction of large-scale hydroelectric plans in the Amazon and the implantation of natural gas, biomass and coal thermoelectric plants in other regions throughout the country. Each of these projects has its proponents and its opponents, who bring forth concerns and create heated debates in the specialized forums. In this article, some of these concerns are explained, especially under the perspective of the comparative analysis of costs involved. Under such merit figures, the nuclear option, when compared to hydro plants, combined with conventional thermal and biomass-fueled plants, and even wind, to expand Brazilian power-generation capacity, does not appear as a priority. The rural electrification is characterized by geographical dispersion of the population, low consumption, high investment by consumers and high cost. Moreover, solar radiation constitutes an inexhaustible source of energy and in its conversion into electricity photovoltaic panels are used. In this study, equations were adjusted to field conditions presented by the manufacturer for current and power of small photovoltaic systems. The mathematical analysis was performed on the photovoltaic rural system I- 100 from ISOFOTON, with power 300 Wp, located at the Experimental Farm Lageado of FCA/UNESP. For the development of such equations, the circuitry of photovoltaic cells has been studied to apply iterative numerical methods for the determination of electrical parameters and possible errors in the appropriate equations in the literature to reality. Therefore, a simulation of a photovoltaic panel was proposed through mathematical equations that were adjusted according to the data of local radiation. The results have presented equations that provide real answers to the user and may assist in the design of these systems, once calculated that the maximum power limit ensures a supply of energy generated. This real sizing helps establishing the possible applications of solar energy to the rural producer and informing the real possibilities of generating electricity from the sun.

In this work, we analyze the long term variability of rainfall and temperature (1912-2008) of Santa Maria (29 degrees S, 53 degrees W) and its possible connection with natural influences such as solar activity and ENSO. Temperature and rainfall present similar frequencies as revealed by spectral analyses. This analysis shows a large number of short periods between 2-8 years and periods of 11.8-12.3, 19.1-21.0, and 64.3-82.5 years. The cross correlation for rainfall and temperature versus Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) have higher cross-power around 2-8 yr. Rainfall and temperature versus sunspot number (Rz) showed higher cross-power around the 11-yr solar cycle period. A high and continuous cross correlation was observed for Rz-22 yr versus rainfall and temperature. Furthermore, the power between 22-yr solar cycle and meteorological parameters was higher than that obtained with the 11-yr solar cycle, suggesting that the effect of Hale cycle on climate may be stronger than the Schwabe cycle effect. These results indicate that the variability of rainfall and temperature is closely related to the variation of the Southern Oscillation Index and solar activity, and that the El Nino Southern Oscillation and solar activity probably play an important role in the climate system over Southern Brazil. A new series of donor acceptor copolymers were synthesized via the Witting route and applied as an active layer in organic thin-films solar cells. These copolymers are composed of fluorene thiophene and phenylene thiophene units. The ratio between those was systematically varied, and copolymers containing 0%, 50%, and 75% of phenylene thiophene were characterized and evaluated when used in photovoltaic devices. The copolymers' composition, photophysical, electrical, and morphological properties are addressed and correlated with device performance. The 50% copolymer ratio was found to be the best copolymer of the series, yielding a power conversion efficiency (PCE) under air mass (AM) 1.5 conditions of 2.4% in the bilayer heterojunction with the C-60 molecule. Aiming at flexible electronics applications, solutions based on the heterojunction of this copolymer with PCBM (6,6-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester) were also successfully deposited using an inkjet printing method and used as an active layer in solar cells.

[EN]A numerical model for the evaluation of solar radiation in different locations is presented. The solar radiation model is implemented taking into account the terrain surface using two-dimensional adaptive meshes of triangles that are constructed using a refinement/derefinement procedure in accordance with the variations of terrain surface and albedo. The selected methodology defines the terrain characteristics with a minimum number of points so that the computational cost is reduced for a given accuracy. The model can be used in atmospheric sciences as well as in other fields such as electrical engineering, since it allows the user to find the optimal location for maximum power generation in photovoltaic or solar thermal power plants...

Research on thin nanostructured crystalline TiO2 films has attracted considerable interests because of their intriguing physical properties and potential applications in photovoltaics. Nanostructured TiO2 film plays an important role in the TiO2 based dye-sensitized solar cells because they act as a substrate for the adsorption of dye molecules and a matrix for the transportation of electrons as well. Thus they can influence the solar cell performance significantly. Consequently, the control of the morphology including the shape, size and size distribution of the TiO2 nanostructures is critical to tune and optimize the performance of the solar cells. To control the TiO2 morphology, a strategy using amphiphilic block copolymer as templating agent coupled with sol-gel chemistry has been applied. Especially, a good-poor solvent pair induced phase separation process has been developed to guide the microphase separation behavior of the block copolymers. The amphiphilic block copolymers used include polystyrene-block-poly (ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO), poly (methyl methacrylate)-block-poly (ethylene oxide) (PMMA-b-PEO), and poly (ethylene oxide)-block-polystyrene-block-poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO-b-PS-b-PEO). The block copolymer undergoes a good-poor-solvent pair induced phase separation in a mixed solution of 1, 4-dioxane or N, N’-dimethyl formamide (DMF), concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) and Titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP). Specifically, in the system of PS-b-PEO, a morphology phase diagram of the inorganic-copolymer composite films was mapped by adjusting the weight fractions among 1, 4-dioxane, HCl, and TTIP in solution. The amorphous TiO2 within the titania-block copolymer composite films was crystallized by calcination at temperatures above 400C, where the organic block copolymer was simultaneously burned away. This strategy is further extended to other amphiphilic block copolymers of PMMA-b-PEO and PEO-b-PS-b-PEO, where the morphology of TiO2 films can also be controlled. The local and long range structures of the titania films were investigated by the combination of imaging techniques (AFM, SEM) and x-ray scattering techniques (x-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence small-angle x-ray scattering). Based on the knowledge of the morphology control, the crystalline TiO2 nanostructured films with different morphologies were introduced into solid state dye-sensitized solar cells. It has been found that all of the morphologies help to improve the performance of the solar cells. Especially, clustered nanoparticles, worm-like structures, foam-like structures, large collapsed nanovesicles show more pronounced performance improvement than other morphologies such as nanowires, flakes, and nanogranulars.

This thesis presents a study of the charge generation, transport, and recombination processes in organic solar cells performed with time-resolved experimental techniques. Organic solar cells based on polymers can be solution-processed on large areas and thus promise to become an inexpensive source of renewable energy. Despite significant improvements of the power conversion efficiency over the last decade, the fundamental working principles of organic solar cells are still not fully understood. It is the aim of this thesis to clarify the role of different performance limiting processes in organic solar cells and to correlate them with the molecular structure of the studied materials, i.e. poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). By combining time-of-flight charge transport measurements, transient absorption spectroscopy, a newly developed experimental technique called time delayed double pulse experiment and drift-diffusion simulations a comprehensive analysis of the working principles of P3HT:PCBM solar cells could be performed. It was found that the molecular structure of P3HT (i.e. the regioregularity) has a pronounced influence on the morphology of thin films of pristine P3HT and of blends of P3HT with PCBM. This morphology in turn affected the charge transport properties as well as the charge generation and recombination kinetics. Well-ordered regioregular P3HT was found to be characterized by a high charge carrier mobility, efficient charge generation and low but field-dependent (non-geminate) recombination. Importantly, the charge generation yield was found to be independent of temperature and applied electric field as opposed to the expectations of the Onsager-Braun model that is commonly applied to describe the temperature and field dependence of charge generation in organic solar cells. These properties resulted in a reasonably good power conversion efficiency. In contrast to this, amorphous regiorandom P3HT was found to show poor charge generation, transport and recombination properties that combine to a much lower power conversion efficiency.

Intense research is being done in the field of organic photovoltaics in order to synthesize low band-gap organic molecules. These molecules are electron donors which feature in combination with acceptor molecules, typically fullerene derivarntives, forming an active blend. This active blend has phase separated bicontinuous morphology on a nanometer scale. The highest recorded power conversionrnefficiencies for such cells have been 10.6%. Organic semiconductors differ from inorganic ones due to the presence of tightly bonded excitons (electron-hole pairs)resulting from their low dielectric constant (εr ≈2-4). An additional driving force is required to separate such Frenkel excitons since their binding energy (0.3-1 eV) is too large to be dissociated by an electric field alone. This additional driving force arises from the energy difference between the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the donor and the acceptor materials. Moreover, the efficiency of the cells also depends on the difference between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of the donor and LUMO of the acceptor. Therefore, a precise control and estimation of these energy levels are required. Furthermore any external influences that change the energy levels will cause a degradation of the power conversion efficiency of organic solar cell materials. In particular, the role of photo-induced degradation on the morphology and electrical performance is a major contribution to degradation and needs to be understood on a nanometer scale. Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) offers the resolution to image the nanometer scale bicontinuous morphology. In addition SPM can be operated to measure the local contact potential difference (CPD) of materials from which energy levels in the materials can be derived. Thus SPM is an unique method for the characterization of surface morphology, potential changes and conductivity changes under operating conditions. In the present work, I describe investigations of organic photovoltaic materials upon photo-oxidation which is one of the major causes of degradation of these solar cell materials. SPM, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and UV-Vis spectroscopy studies allowed me to identify the chemical reactions occurring inside the active layer upon photo-oxidation. From the measured data, it was possible to deduce the energy levels and explain the various shifts which gave a better understanding of the physics of the device. In addition, I was able to quantify the degradation by correlating the local changes in the CPD and conductivity to the device characteristics, i.e., open circuit voltage and short circuit current. Furthermore, time-resolved electrostatic force microscopy (tr-EFM) allowed us to probe dynamic processes like the charging rate of the individual donor and acceptor domains within the active blend. Upon photo-oxidation, it was observed, that the acceptor molecules got oxidized first preventing the donor polymer from degrading. Work functions of electrodes can be tailored by modifying the interface with monomolecular thin layers of molecules which are made by a chemical reaction in liquids. These modifications in the work function are particularly attractive for opto-electronic devices whose performance depends on the band alignment between the electrodes and the active material. In order to measure the shift in work function on a nanometer scale, I used KPFM in situ, which means in liquids, to follow changes in the work function of Au upon hexadecanethiol adsorption from decane. All the above investigations give us a better understanding of the photo-degradation processes of the active material at the nanoscale. Also, a method to compare various new materials used for organic solar cells for stability is proposed which eliminates the requirement to make fully functional devices saving time and additional engineering efforts.
