The variation in the emission of Si+ ions from ion-beam-induced oxidized silicon surfaces has been studied. The stoichiometry and the electronic structure of the altered layer has been characterized using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS analysis of the Si 2p core level indicates the strong presence of suboxide chemical states when bombarding at angles of incidence larger than 30 °. Since the surface stoichiometry or degree of oxidation varies with the angle of incidence, the corresponding valence-band structures also differ among each other. A comparison between experimental measurements and theoretically calculated Si and SiO2 valence bands indicates that the valence bands for the altered layers are formed by a combination of those two. Since Si-Si bonds are present in the suboxide molecules, the top of the respective new valence bands are formed by the corresponding 3p-3p Si-like subbands, which extend up to the Si Fermi level. The changes in stoichiometry and electronic structure have been correlated with the emission of Si+ ions from these surfaces. From the results a general model for the Si+ ion emission is proposed combining the resonant tunneling and local-bond-breaking models.

Knowledge of the reflectivity of the sediment-covered seabed is of significant importance to marine seismic data acquisition and interpretation as it governs the generation of reverberations in the water layer. In this context pertinent, but largely unresolved, questions concern the importance of the typically very prominent vertical seismic velocity gradients as well as the potential presence and magnitude of anisotropy in soft surficial seabed sediments. To address these issues, we explore the seismic properties of granulometric end-member-type clastic sedimentary seabed models consisting of sand, silt, and clay as well as scale-invariant stochastic layer sequences of these components characterized by realistic vertical gradients of the P- and S-wave velocities. Using effective media theory, we then assess the nature and magnitude of seismic anisotropy associated with these models. Our results indicate that anisotropy is rather benign for P-waves, and that the S-wave velocities in the axial directions differ only slightly. Because of the very high P- to S-wave velocity ratios in the vicinity of the seabed our models nevertheless suggest that S-wave triplications may occur at very small incidence angles. To numerically evaluate the P-wave reflection coefficient of our seabed models, we apply a frequency-slowness technique to the corresponding synthetic seismic wavefields. Comparison with analytical plane-wave reflection coefficients calculated for corresponding isotropic elastic half-space models shows that the differences tend to be most pronounced in the vicinity of the elastic equivalent of the critical angle as well as in the post-critical range. We also find that the presence of intrinsic anisotropy in the clay component of our layered models tends to dramatically reduce the overall magnitude of the P-wave reflection coefficient as well as its variation with incidence angle.

The spared nerve injury (SNI) model mimics human neuropathic pain related to peripheral nerve injury and is based upon an invasive but simple surgical procedure. Since its first description in 2000, it has displayed a remarkable development. It produces a robust, reliable and long-lasting neuropathic pain-like behaviour (allodynia and hyperalgesia) as well as the possibility of studying both injured and non-injured neuronal populations in the same spinal ganglion. Besides, variants of the SNI model have been developed in rats, mice and neonatal/young rodents, resulting in several possible angles of analysis. Therefore, the purpose of this chapter is to provide a detailed guidance regarding the SNI model and its variants, highlighting its surgical and behavioural testing specificities.

Background: The hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS3-4A protease is not only an essential component of the viral replication complex and a prime target for antiviral intervention but also a key player in the persistence and pathogenesis of HCV. It cleaves and thereby inactivates two crucial adaptor proteins in viral RNA sensing and innate immunity (MAVS and TRIF) as well as a phosphatase involved in growth factor signaling (TC-PTP). The aim of this study was to identify novel cellular substrates of the NS3-4A protease and to investigate their role in the life cycle and pathogenesis of HCV. Methods: Cell lines inducibly expressing the NS3-4A protease were analyzed in basal as well as interferon- α -stimulated states by stable isotopic labeling using amino acids in cell culture (SILAC) coupled with protein separation and mass spectrometry. Candidates fulfilling strin- gent criteria for potential substrates or products of the NS3-4A protease were further investigated in different experimental sys- tems as well as in liver biopsies from patients with chronic hep- atitis C. Results: SILAC coupled with protein separation and mass spectrometry yielded > 5000 proteins of which 21 can- didates were selected for further analyses. These allowed us to identify GPx8, a membrane-associated peroxidase involved in disulfide bond formation in the endoplasmic reticulum, as a novel cellular substrate of the HCV NS3-4A protease. Cleavage occurs at cysteine in position 11, removing the cytosolic tip of GPx8, and was observed in different experimental systems as well as in liver biopsies from patients with chronic hepatitis C. Further functional studies, involving overexpression and RNA silencing, revealed that GPx8 is a proviral factor involved in viral particle production but not in HCV entry or RNA replica- tion. Conclusions: GPx8 is a proviral host factor cleaved by the HCV NS3-4A protease. Studies investigating the consequences of cleavage for GPx8 function are underway. The identification of novel cellular substrates of the HCV NS3-4A protease should yield new insights into the HCV life cycle and the pathogenesis of hepatitis C and may reveal novel angles for therapeutic inter- vention.

We calculate the production of two b-quark pairs in hadron collisions. Sources of multiple pairs are multiple interactions and higher order perturbative QCD mechanisms. We subsequently investigate the competing effects of multiple b-pair production on measurements of CP violation: (i) the increase in event rate with multiple b-pair cross sections which may reach values of the order of 1 b in the presence of multiple interactions and (ii) the dilution of b versus b tagging efficiency because of the presence of events with four B mesons. The impact of multiple B-meson production is small unless the cross section for producing a single pair exceeds 1 mb. We show that even for larger values of the cross section the competing effects (i) and (ii) roughly compensate so that there is no loss in the precision with which CP-violating CKM angles can be determined.

We study the forced displacement of a thin film of fluid in contact with vertical and inclined substrates of different wetting properties, that range from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, using the lattice-Boltzmann method. We study the stability and pattern formation of the contact line in the hydrophilic and superhydrophobic regimes, which correspond to wedge-shaped and nose-shaped fronts, respectively. We find that contact lines are considerably more stable for hydrophilic substrates and small inclination angles. The qualitative behavior of the front in the linear regime remains independent of the wetting properties of the substrate as a single dispersion relation describes the stability of both wedges and noses. Nonlinear patterns show a clear dependence on wetting properties and substrate inclination angle. The effect is quantified in terms of the pattern growth rate, which vanishes for the sawtooth pattern and is finite for the finger pattern. Sawtooth shaped patterns are observed for hydrophilic substrates and low inclination angles, while finger-shaped patterns arise for hydrophobic substrates and large inclination angles. Finger dynamics show a transient in which neighboring fingers interact, followed by a steady state where each finger grows independently.

Synthetic aluminum-substituted maghemites were characterized by total chemical analysis, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy (ME), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The aim was to determine the structural, magnetic, and hyperfine properties of γ-Fe2-xAl xO3 as the Al concentration is varied. The XRD results of the synthetic products were indexed exclusively as maghemite. Increasing Al for Fe substitution decreased the mean crystalline dimension and shifted all diffraction peaks to higher º2θ angles. The a0 dimension of the cubic unit cell decreased with increasing Al according to the equation a o = 0.8385 - 3.63 x 10-5 Al (R²= 0.94). Most Mössbauer spectra were composed of one sextet, but at the highest substitution rate of 142.5 mmol mol-1 Al, both a doublet and sextet were obtained at 300 K. All hyperfine parameters from the sub-spectra were consistent with high-spin Fe3+ (0.2 a 0.7 mms-1) and suggested a strong superparamagnetic component associated with the doublet. The magnetic hyperfine field of the sextets decreased with the amount of Al-substitution [Bhf (T) = 49.751 - 0.1202Al; R² = 0.94] while the linewidth increased linearly. The saturation magnetization also decreased with increasing isomorphous substitution.

A simple, low-cost accessory (patent pending) with only two flat mirrors and a new variable-angle mechanism has been developed for infrared specular reflectance measurements. The system allows the angles of incidence to be varied continuously from 15° (near normal incidence) to 85° (near grazing angle) without losing the alignment of the accessory. The reflectivity of boron nitride thin films deposited on metallic substrates has been measured at different angles of incidence to demonstrate the utility of this accessory.

This study reviewed the subjective, clinical and radiological outcome of 71 patients (84 feet) treated by scarf osteotomy for hallux valgus deformity at our institution from 1995 to 1998 with an average follow-up time of 22 months (range, 17 to 48 months). At the time of follow-up, 39% of the patients were very satisfied, 50% were satisfied and 11% were not satisfied. The mean AOFAS score raised significantly from 43 points (14-68) preoperatively to 82 points (39 to 100) at follow-up (p < 0.001). The radiological angles including M1-M2, M1-P1, M1-M5 and DMAA improved significantly (p < 0.001). Among the 16 complications recorded, seven (8%) were minor and nine (11%) required an additional procedure. The scarf osteotomy of the first metatarsal coupled with a lateral soft-tissue release and, in three-quarters of our cases, with a basal closing wedge varisation osteotomy of the first phalanx, resulted in overall high satisfaction rate as well as significant clinical and radiological improvements in our series. Nevertheless, the range of motion of the first MP joint remained low: 30 degrees to 74 degrees in 52 patients (62%) and <30 degrees in four patients (5%). Furthermore, the mobility of the first ray as well as the consequences of the procedure in the sagittal plane need to be assessed more accurately, and this may be achieved by incorporating measurement of the plantar pressures in the forefoot area into the global rating system.

The class of Schoenberg transformations, embedding Euclidean distances into higher dimensional Euclidean spaces, is presented, and derived from theorems on positive definite and conditionally negative definite matrices. Original results on the arc lengths, angles and curvature of the transformations are proposed, and visualized on artificial data sets by classical multidimensional scaling. A distance-based discriminant algorithm and a robust multidimensional centroid estimate illustrate the theory, closely connected to the Gaussian kernels of Machine Learning.

River bifurcations are key nodes within braided river systems controlling the flow and sediment partitioning and therefore the dynamics of the river braiding process. Recent research has shown that certain geometrical configurations induce instabilities that lead to downstream mid-channel bar formation and the formation of bifurcations. However, we currently have a poor understanding of the flow division process within bifurcations and the flow dynamics in the downstream bifurcates, both of which are needed to understand bifurcation stability. This paper presents results of a numerical sensitivity experiment undertaken using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with the purpose of understanding the flow dynamics of a series of idealized bifurcations. A geometric sensitivity analysis is undertaken for a range of channel slopes (0.005 to 0.03), bifurcation angles (22 degrees to 42 degrees) and a restricted set of inflow conditions based upon simulating flow through meander bends with different curvature on the flow field dynamics through the bifurcation. The results demonstrate that the overall slope of the bifurcation affects the velocity of flow through the bifurcation and when slope asymmetry is introduced, the flow structures in the bifurcation are modified. In terms of bifurcation evolution the most important observation appears to be that once slope asymmetry is greater than 0.2 the flow within the steep bifurcate shows potential instability and the potential for alternate channel bar formation. Bifurcation angle also defines the flow structures within the bifurcation with an increase in bifurcation angle increasing the flow velocity down both bifurcates. However, redistributive effects of secondary circulation caused by upstream curvature can very easily counter the effects of local bifurcation characteristics. SUMMARY :Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by an elevated intra- hepatocellular lipid (IHCL) concentration (> 5%). The incidence of NAFLD is frequently increased in obese patients, and is considered to be the hepatic component of the metabolic syndrome. The metabolic syndrome, also characterized by visceral obesity, altered glucose homeostasis, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and high blood pressure, represents actually a major public health burden. Both dietary factors and low physical activity are involved in the development of the metabolic syndrome. ln animals and healthy humans, high-fat or high-fructose diets lead to the development of several features of the metabolic syndrome including increased intrahepatic lipids and insulin resistance. ln contrast the effects of dietary protein are less well known, but an increase in protein intake has been suggested to exert beneficial effects by promoting weight loss and improving glucose homeostasis in insulin-resistant patients. Increased postprandial thermogenesis and enhanced satiety after protein ingestion may be both involved. The effects of dietary protein on hepatic lipids have been poorly investigated in humans, but preliminary studies in rodents have shown a reduction of hepatic lipids in carbohydrate fed rats and in obese rats. ln this context this work aimed at investigating the metabolic effects of dietary protein intake on hepatic lipid metabolism and glucose homeostasis in humans. The modulation by dietary proteins of exogenous lipid oxidation, net lipid oxidation, hepatic beta-oxidation, triglycerides concentrations, whole-body energy expenditure and glucose tolerance was assessed in the fasting state and in postprandial states. Measurements of IHCL were performed to quantify the amount of triglycerides in the liver. ln an attempt to cover all these metabolic aspects under different point of views, these questions were addressed by three protocols involving various feeding conditions. Study I addressed the effects of a 4-day hypercaloric high-fat high-protein diet on the accumulation of fat in the liver (IHCL) and on insulin sensitivity. Our findings indicated that a high protein intake significantly prevents intrahepatic fat deposition induced by a short- term hypercaloric high-fat diet, adverse effects of which are presumably modulated at the liver level. These encouraging results led us to conduct the second study (Study ll), as we were also interested in a more clinical approach to protein administration and especially if increased protein intakes might be of benefit for obese patients. Therefore the effects of one-month whey protein supplementation on IHCL, insulin sensitivity, lipid metabolism, glucose tolerance and renal function were assessed in obese women. Results showed that whey protein supplementation reduces hepatic steatosis and improves the plasma lipid profile in obese patients, without adverse effects on glucose tolerance or creatinine clearance. However since patients were fed ud-libitum, it remains possible that spontaneous carbohydrate and fat intakes were reduced due to the satiating effects of protein. The third study (Study lll) was designed in an attempt to deepen our comprehension about the mechanisms involved in the modulation of IHCL. We hypothesized that protein improved lipid metabolism and, therefore, we evaluated the effects of a high protein meal on postprandial lipid metabolism and glucose homeostasis after 4-day on a control or a protein diet. Our results did not sustain the hypothesis of an increased postprandial net lipid oxidation, hepatic beta oxidation and exogenous lipid oxidation. Four days on a high-protein diet rather decreased exogenous fat oxidation and enhanced postprandial triglyceride concentrations, by impairing probably chylomicron-TG clearance. Altogether the results of these three studies suggest a beneficial effect of protein intake on the reduction in lHCL, and clearly show that supplementation of proteins do not reduce IHCL by stimulating lipid metabolism, e.g. whole body fat oxidation, hepatic beta oxidation, or exogenous fat oxidation. The question of the effects of high-protein intakes on hepatic lipid metabolism is still open and will need further investigation to be elucidated. The effects of protein on increased postprandial lipemia and lipoproteins kinetics have been little investigated so far and might therefore be an interesting research question, considering the tight relationship between an elevation of plasmatic TG concentrations and the increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases.Résumé :La stéatose hépatique non alcoolique se caractérise par un taux de lipides intra-hépatiques élevé, supérieur à 5%.

Sex differences in circadian rhythms have been reported with some conflicting results. The timing of sleep and length of time in bed have not been considered, however, in previous such studies. The current study has 3 major aims: (1) replicate previous studies in a large sample of young adults for sex differences in sleep patterns and dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) phase; (2) in a subsample constrained by matching across sex for bedtime and time in bed, confirm sex differences in DLMO and phase angle of DLMO to bedtime; (3) explore sex differences in the influence of sleep timing and length of time in bed on phase angle. A total of 356 first-year Brown University students (207 women) aged 17.7 to 21.4 years (mean = 18.8 years, SD = 0.4 years) were included in these analyses. Wake time was the only sleep variable that showed a sex difference. DLMO phase was earlier in women than men and phase angle wider in women than men. Shorter time in bed was associated with wider phase angle in women and men. In men, however, a 3-way interaction indicated that phase angles were influenced by both bedtime and time in bed; a complex interaction was not found for women. These analyses in a large sample of young adults on self-selected schedules confirm a sex difference in wake time, circadian phase, and the association between circadian phase and reported bedtime. A complex interaction with length of time in bed occurred for men but not women. We propose that these sex differences likely indicate fundamental differences in the biology of the sleep and circadian timing systems as well as in behavioral choices.
