In this paper, we present the study and implementation of a low-cost system to detect the occurrences of tsunamis at significantly smaller laboratory scale. The implementation is easily scalable for real-time deployment. Information reported in this paper includes the experimentally recorded response from the pressure sensor giving an indication as well as an alarm at remote place for the detection of water turbulence similar to the case of tsunami. It has been found that the system developed works very well in the laboratory scale.

Males of several acoustically communicating orthopteran species form spatially and temporally structured choruses. We investigated whether male field crickets of the species Plebeiogryllus guttiventris formed choruses in the field. Males formed spatial aggregations and showed fidelity to a calling site within a night, forming stable choruses. Within aggregations, the acoustic ranges of males overlapped considerably. We tested whether males within hearing range of each other interacted acoustically. The chirps of simultaneously calling males were aphasic with respect to each other and showed no significant alternation or synchrony of calls. Some individuals changed temporal features of their calling songs such as chirp durations and chirp rates in response to a simultaneously calling neighbour. The implications of these results for female mate choice are discussed

We discuss the key issues in the deployment of sparse sensor networks. The network monitors several environment parameters and is deployed in a semi-arid region for the benefit of small and marginal farmers. We begin by discussing the problems of an existing unreliable 1 sq km sparse network deployed in a village. The proposed solutions are implemented in a new cluster. The new cluster is a reliable 5 sq km network. Our contributions are two fold. Firstly, we describe a. novel methodology to deploy a sparse reliable data gathering sensor network and evaluate the ``safe distance'' or ``reliable'' distance between nodes using propagation models. Secondly, we address the problem of transporting data from rural aggregation servers to urban data centres. This paper tracks our steps in deploying a sensor network in a village,in India, trying to provide better diagnosis for better crop management. Keywords - Rural, Agriculture, CTRS, Sparse.

Terahertz time domain spectroscopy has been used to study low frequency confined acoustic phonons of silver nanoparticles embedded in poly (vinyl alcohol) matrix in the spectral range of 0.1-2.5 THz. The real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function show two bands at 0.60 and 2.12 THz attributed to the spheroidal and toroidal modes of silver nanoparticles, thus demonstrating the usefulness of terahertz time domain spectroscopy as a complementary technique to Raman spectroscopy in characterizing the nanoparticles. Graphite particles are exfoliated and subsequently functionalized with toluidine blue. The resulting covalently modified graphite particles are restacked without any binder to form a surface-renewable, bulk-modified electrode. Electrocatalytic oxidation of NADH and its application in the amperometric biosensing of ethanol using alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme have been demonstrated with this material.
Acoustic emission technique for leak detection in an end shield of a pressurised heavy water reactor
Resumo:
This paper discusses a successful application of the Acoustic Emission Technique (AET) for the detection and location of leak paths present on an inaccessible side of an end shield of a Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR). The methodology was based on the fact that air- and water-leak AE signals have different characteristic features. Baseline data was generated from a sound end shield of a PHWR for characterising the background noise. A mock-up end shield system with saw-cut leak paths was used to verify the validity of the methodology. It was found that air-leak signals under pressurisation (as low as 3 psi) could be detected by frequency domain analysis. Signals due to air leaks from various locations of defective end shield were acquired and analysed. It was possible to detect and locate leak paths. The presence of detected leak paths was further confirmed by an alternative test.

Acoustic emission (AE) technique was used to characterise drilling of composite laminates. Uni-directional glass fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) laminates consisting of 12-layers and 16-layers (0/90)(s) were drilled using a twist drill and the generated AE was monitored. Results of the investigations reveal that the complexion of the acoustic emission root mean square (AE-RMS) signal response changes from the drill entry to the exit thus giving an overall understanding about the different events that take place during drilling. Also, AE-RMS signal level increases with an increase in the applied thrust and further reveals that it is possible to evaluate the drill induced damages in composites through AE signal characterisation. The present work gives a comprehensive numerical study of the evolution and decay of cylindrical and spherical nonlinear acoustic waves generated by a sinusoidal source. Using pseudospectral and predictor–corrector implicit finite difference methods, we first reproduced the known analytic results of the plane harmonic problem to a high degree of accuracy. The non-planar harmonic problems, for which the amplitude decay is faster than that for the planar case, are then treated. The results are correlated with the known asymptotic results of Scott (1981) and Enflo (1985). The constant in the old-age formula for the cylindrical canonical problem is found to be 1.85 which is rather close to 2, ‘estimated’ analytically by Enflo. The old-age solutions exhibiting strict symmetry about the maximum are recovered; these provide an excellent analytic check on the numerical solutions. The evolution of the waves for different source geometries is depicted graphically.

Energy harvesting sensors (EHS), which harvest energy from the environment in order to sense and then communicate their measurements over a wireless link, provide the tantalizing possibility of perpetual lifetime operation of a sensor network. The wireless communication link design problem needs to be revisited for these sensors as the energy harvested can be random and small and not available when required. In this paper, we develop a simple model that captures the interactions between important parameters that govern the communication link performance of a EHS node, and analyze its outage probability for both slow fading and fast fading wireless channels. Our analysis brings out the critical importance of the energy profile and the energy storage capability on the EHS link performance. Our results show that properly tuning the transmission parameters of the EHS node and having even a small amount of energy storage capability improves the EHS link performance considerably.

The Mycobacterium tuberculosis transcriptional regulator Rv1364c regulates the activity of the stress response sigma factor sigma(F). This multi-domain protein has several components: a signaling PAS domain and an effector segment comprising of a phosphatase, a kinase and an anti-anti-sigma factor domain. Based on Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) data, Rv1364c was recently shown to be a homo-dimer and adopt an elongated conformation in solution. The PAS domain could not be modeled into the structural envelope due to poor sequence similarity with known PAS proteins. The crystal structure of the PAS domain described here provides a structural basis for the dimerization of Rv1364c. It thus appears likely that the PAS domain regulates the anti-sigma activity of Rv1364c by oligomerization. A structural comparison with other characterized PAS domains reveal several sequence and conformational features that could facilitate ligand binding - a feature which suggests that the function of Rv1364c could potentially be governed by specific cellular signals or metabolic cues. We study a sensor node with an energy harvesting source. In any slot, the sensor node is in one of two modes: Wake or Sleep. The generated energy is stored in a buffer. The sensor node senses a random field and generates a packet when it is awake. These packets are stored in a queue and transmitted in the wake mode using the energy available in the energy buffer. We obtain energy management policies which minimize a linear combination of the mean queue length and the mean data loss rate. Then, we obtain two easily implementable suboptimal policies and compare their performance to that of the optimal policy. Next, we extend the Throughput Optimal policy developed in our previous work to sensors with two modes. Via this policy, we can increase the through put substantially and stabilize the data queue by allowing the node to sleep in some slots and to drop some generated packets. This policy requires minimal statistical knowledge of the system. We also modify this policy to decrease the switching costs.

A damage detection and imaging methodology based on symmetry of neighborhood sensor path and similarity of signal patterns with respect to radial paths in a circular array of sensors has been developed It uses information regarding Limb wave propagation along with a triangulation scheme to rapidly locate and quantify the severity of damage without using all of the sensor data. In a plate like structure, such a scheme can be effectively employed besides full field imaging of wave scattering pattern from the damage, if present in the plate. This new scheme is validated experimentally. Hole and corrosion type damages have been detected and quantified using the proposed scheme successfully. A wavelet based cumulative damage index has been studied which shows monotonic sensitivity against the severity of the damage. which is most desired in a Structural Health Monitoring system. We study wireless multihop energy harvesting sensor networks employed for random field estimation. The sensors sense the random field and generate data that is to be sent to a fusion node for estimation. Each sensor has an energy harvesting source and can operate in two modes: Wake and Sleep. We consider the problem of obtaining jointly optimal power control, routing and scheduling policies that ensure a fair utilization of network resources. This problem has a high computational complexity. Therefore, we develop a computationally efficient suboptimal approach to obtain good solutions to this problem. We study the optimal solution and performance of the suboptimal approach through some numerical examples.

The coupling of surface acoustic waves propagating in two separated piezoelectric media is studied using the perturbation theory of Auld. The results of the analysis are applied to two configurations using Bi12GeO20 and CdS crystals. It is found that the loss due to coupling is about 7 dB at 50 MHz in the cases of (111)-cut, [110]-prop. Bi12GeO20 and Y-cut, 60°-X prop. CdS combination.
