Ce3+ and/or Tb3+-doped (La,Gd)MgB5O10 nanocrystalline thin films were deposited on silica glass substrates by a sol-gel dip-coating process using triethyl borate B(OC2H5)(3) as the boron source. The results of XRD indicated that the films have fully crystallized after annealing at 800 degrees C. The films are transparent, uniform and crack free with a thickness of about 300 nm, consisting of particles with an average grain size of 50 nm. The luminescence and energy transfer properties of Ce3+ and Tb3+ have been studied in the films. It is confirmed that the excitation energy of Ce3+ transfers to the Gd3+, migrates over the Gd3+ sublattices, trapped by the Tb3+ and resulted in its characteristic green emission (D-5(4)-F-7(5) at 543 nm) in GdMgB5O10 nanocrystalline films as in the powder phosphors.

A novel wide-bandgap conjugated polymer (PDHFSCHD) consisting of alternating dihexylfluorene and rigidly twisted biphenyl units has been synthesized. The new fluorene-based copolymer composed of rigid twisting segments in the main-chain exhibits an optical bandgap of as high as 3.26 eV, and a highly efficient ultraviolet emission with peaks at 368 nm and 386 nm. An electroluminescence device from PDHFSCHD neat film as an active layer shows UV emission which peaks at 395 nm with a turn on voltage below 8 V By optimizing the device conditions, a peak EL quantum efficiency of 0.054% and brightness of 10 cd.m(-2) was obtained. Furthermore, blending a poly(dihexylfluorene) in the PDHFSCHD host gave pure blue emission peaking at 417 nm, and 440 nm without long wavelength emission from aggregated species. Efficient energy transfer from PDHFSCHD to PDHF was demonstrated in these blended systems. Depressed chain-aggregation of PDHF in the PDHFSCHD host can correspond to pure blue emission behaviors.

Several new hybrid organic-inorganic Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films containing europium-substituted hetero-polytungstate Eu (XW11O39)(2)''(-) (X=Ge, Si, B) were successfully obtained using LB technique. When the heteropolytungstate anions are dissolved in the subphase, dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide compression isotherms have been modified, which shows that the polyanions interact with the monolayer. Y-type LB films were obtained from the systems. Low-angle X-ray has shown that these LB films have well-defined lamella. The LB films were characterized by luminescence spectra and the characteristic luminescence behavior for europium-substituted heteropolytungstate complexes and their LB films were discussed. The results of excitation spectra indicate that the energy could be effectively transferred from ligands to the Eu3+ ions in the LB films and the luminescence efficiency could be greatly increased. The results of luminescence spectra indicate that the formations of hybrid organic-inorganic LB films have a great effect on the luminescence of europium-substituted heteropolytungstate. The lifetime shortening was observed in LB films.

The infrared spectra of BaLnB(9)O(16):Re, along with the VUV excitation spectra, have been measured. The spectra were tentatively interpreted in terms of the data on absorptions of the borate groups and band structure. It was observed that there are absorption due to BO3 and BO4 groups, indicating that there are BO3 and BO4 groups in BaLnB(9)O(16). It is found that absorption of the borate groups is located in the range from 120 to 170 mn. This result reveals that there is an energy transfer from host to the rare earth ions. It also observed that the energy of charge transfer band, the host absorption, the total crystal field splitting of d-levels of Tb3+ increase with the decrease in the Ln(3+) radius. A novel macrocyclic compound-water soluble functional calixresorcin[4]arenes-tetra para sulfo-phenylmethyl-calixresorcin[4]are was synthesized for the first time. The photophysical properties of terbium and europium ions encapsulated in the macrocyclic ligand were studied in detail. The triplet state energy of the calixresorcin[4]arene was determined to be 24400 cm(-1) by the low temperature phosphorescence spectrum and it was found that it can sensitize both terbium ion and europium ion. The possible energy transfer process between the functional calixresorcin[4]arene and the encapsulated Tb3+ and Eu3+ was discussed. The luminescence quantum efficiency of Tb3+- calixresorcin[4]arene was calculated.

A navel thermally stable terbium carboxylate complex, Tb(MTP)(3)(phen) (MTP=monotetradecyl phthalate, phen=1,10-phehanthroline), was synthesized and characterized. The device structure of glass substrate/indium-tin-oxide/poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV)/poly (N-vinycarbazole) (PVK):Tb(MTP)(3)(phen): 1,3,4-oxadizole derivative (PBD)/tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) (Alq(3))/aluminum (Al) was employed to study the electroluminescent properties of Tb(MTP)(3)(phen). A green emission with extremely sharp spectral band of less than 10 nm at 544 nm peak wavelength was observed. A maximum luminance of 152 cd/m(2) and an external quantum efficiency of 0.017% were achieved at a drive voltage of 24 V. A possible mechanism of energy transfer based on the polymer doped with lanthanide organic complex was also proposed.

The luminescence properties of Ce3+, Tb3+, Sm3+ and energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ were studied in two modifications of Y2SiO5 (low temperature X(1) type and high temperature X(2) type). The Ce3+ cation shows lower emission energy and larger Stokes shift in X(1)-Y2SiO5 than in X(2)-Y2SiO5, and the emission intensities of Ce3+, Tb3+, Sm3+ in the former are weaker than those in the latter. There exists an energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ in both types of Y2SiO5, and the transfer efficiency in X(2) type is higher than that in X(1) type. All of these results are discussed in relation to the crystal structure of Y2SiO5.

B-phycoerythrin (BPE) and R-phycocyanin (RPC) were purified from Porphyridium cruentum by Sephadex G-200 chromatography, then the BPE was attached covalently to the RPC by reacting their amino groups to form the artificially covalent BPE-RPC conjugate in which the excitation energy can transfer from the BPE to the RPC with low efficiency. Meanwhile, the intact phycobilisome (PBS) consisting of BPE, RPC, APC and L-CM was isolated and purified from Porphyridium cruentum, and the purified PBS was found to keep intact if the solution contains sucrose. Comparison of spectroscopic properties between the purified PBS and the BPE-RPC conjugate suggests that the BPE-RPC conjugate is much more stable than the purified PBS. The construction of BPE-RPC conjugate with low efficiency of the excitation energy transfer may be useful for preparing phycobiliprotein probes. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. Comparative investigation on energy distribution between two photosystems were carried out in the sporophytes and gametophytes of Porphyra yezoensis. By performing 77 K fluorescence spectra, we suggested that there probably existed a pathway for energy transfer from PS II to PS I to redistribute the absorbed energy in gametophytes, while no such a way or at minor level in sporophytes. Electron transfer inhibitor DCMU blocked the energy transfer from PS II to PS I in gametophytes, but no obvious effects on sporophytes. These indicated that excitation energy distribution between two photosystems in gametophytes was more cooperative than that in sporophytes. These data in ontogenesis reflected the evolution process of photosynthetic organisms and supported the hypothesis of independent evolution of each photosystem.

Polysiphonia urceolata R-phycoerythrin and Porphyridium cruentum B-phycoerythrin were degraded with proteinaseK, and then the nearly native gamma subunits were isolated from the reaction mixture. The process of degradation of phycoerythrin with proteinaseK showed that the gamma subunit is located in the central cavity of (alpha beta)(6) hexamer of phycoerythrin. Comparative analysis of the spectra of the native phycoerythrin, the phycoerythrin at pH 12 and the isolated gamma subunit showed that the absorption peaks of phycoerythrobilins on alpha or beta subunit are at 535 nm (or 545 nm) and 565 nm, the fluorescence emission maximum at 580 nm; the absorption peak of phycoerythrobilins on the isolated gamma subunit is at 589 nm, the fluorescence emission peak at 620 nm which overlaps the absorption maximum of C-phycocyanin and perhaps contributes to the energy transfer with high efficiency between phycoerythrin and phycocyanin in phycobilisome; the absorption maximum of phycourobilin on the isolated gamma subunit is at 498 nm, which is the same as that in native phycoerythrin, and the fluorescence emission maximum at 575 nm.

Concentrated cultures (25-86 mg Chl a l(-1)) of Anabaena variabilis PK84 were incubated under 99% Ar+1% CO2 atmosphere in the photobioreactor made of coaxial cylinders. Under illumination equal to 353 mu E m(-2) s(-1) they produced hydrogen with the rate more than 20 ml l(-1) h(-1) for several days. The efficiency of light energy conversion into H-2 was approx. 1% and did not depend significantly on initial Chl a concentration. H-2/O-2 ratio reached 41.5% of theoretical value for water photolysis. Data indicate that dense cultures might be used for outdoor systems under direct sun light. Supra-optimal temperatures 36 degrees C were not harmful for cultures even for 2 days period. Short-term incubation of cultures under 36 degrees C even increased H2 production rate and efficiency of light energy bioconversion by 1.25 times. A novel design of a moving-coil transducer coupled with a low-hardness elastomer called “the gel surround” is presented in this thesis. This device is termed a “gel-type audio transducer”. The gel-type audio transducer has been developed to overcome the problems that conventional loudspeakers have suffered - that is, the problem with size of the audio device against the quality of sound at low frequency range. Therefore the research work presented herein aims to develop the “gel-type audio transducer” as a next-generation audio transducer for miniaturized woofers. The gel-type audio transducer consists of the magnetic and coil-drive plate assembly, and these parts are coupled by the gel surround. The transducer is driven by the electromagnetic conversion mechanism (a moving-coil transducer) and its output driving force can be greatly enhanced by applying the novel mechanism of the gel surround especially at low frequency range, resulting in the enhanced acoustic efficiency. The transducer can be attached to a stiff and light panel with both the optimized impedance matching and minimised wave collisions. The performance of the gel-type audio transducer is greatly influenced by the mass of the magnetic assembly and compliance of the “gel surround”. But as the size of the magnet and its weight have to be kept minimal for a miniaturisation of the device, the focus of the research is on the effect of the of the gel surround. As a result, the effect of the gel surround, made of the RTV (room-temperature vulcanising) silicone elastomer, TPE (thermoplastic elastomer), and the silicone foam, on generation of the output driving force, the energy transfer from the transducer to a panel to which the transducer is attached, and sound radiation from the vibrating panel, was investigated. This effect was studied by COMSOL multiphysics (FE analysis) and thereby, the simulated results were verified by experiments such as the laser scanning measurement, DMA (dynamic mechanical analyzer), and the acoustic test. Successful development of prototypes of the gel-type audio transducers, with an enhanced acoustic efficiency at reduced size and weight, was achieved. Implementation of the transducers into consumer applications was also demonstrated with their commercial values.

A number of experiments have been undertaken at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory that were designed to investigate the physics of fast electron transport relevant to fast ignition inertial fusion. The laser, operating at a wavelength of 1054 nm, provided pulses of up to 350 J of energy on target in a duration that varied in the range 0.5-5 ps and a focused intensity of up to 10(21) W cm(-2). A dependence of the divergence of the fast electron beam with intensity on target has been identified for the first time. This dependence is reproduced in two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and has been found to be an intrinsic property of the laser-plasma interaction. A number of ideas to control the divergence of the fast electron beam are described. The fractional energy transfer to the fast electron beam has been obtained from calibrated, time-resolved, target rear-surface radiation temperature measurements. It is in the range 15-30%, increasing with incident laser energy on target. The fast electron temperature has been measured to be lower than the ponderomotive potential energy and is well described by Haines' relativistic absorption model.

Previous work by ourselves and by others has demonstrated that protons with a linear energy transfer (LET) about 30 V mu m(-1) are more effective at killing cells than doubly charged particles of the same LET. In this work we show that by using deuterons, which have about twice the range of protons with the same LET, it is possible to extend measurements of the RBE of singly charged particles to higher LET (up to 50 keV mu m(-1)). We report the design and use of a new arrangement for irradiating V79 mammalian cells. Cell survival. measurements have been made using protons in the energy range 1.0-3.7 MeV, deuterons in the energy range 0.9-3.4 MeV and He-3(2+) ions in the energy range 3.4-6.9 MeV;. This corresponds to volume-averaged LET (within the cell nucleus) between 10 and 28 keV mu m(-1) for protons, 18-50 keV mu m(-1) for deuterons, and 59-106 keV mu m(-1) for helium ions. Our results show no difference in the effectiveness of protons and deuterons matched for LET. However, for LET above about 30 keV mu m(-1) singly charged particles are more effective at inactivating cells than doubly-charged particles of the same LET and that this difference can be understood in terms of the radial dose distribution around the primary ion track.

ABSTRACT: This thesis reports on the synthesis, characterisation of the structure and photoluminescence properties, and applications of nanotubes and nanorods of lanthanides oxides in atomic force microscopy tips, heterogeneous catalysis and polymer-base composites. There is a growing interest in understanding how size-dependent quantum confinement affects the photoluminescence efficiency, excited-state dynamics, energy-transfer and thermalisation phenomena in nanophosphors. For lanthanide (Ln3+)-doped nanocrystals, and despite the localisation of the 4f states, confinement effects are induced mostly via electron-phonon interactions. In particular, the anomalous thermalisation reported for a handful of Ln3+-doped nanocrystals has been rationalised by the absence of lowfrequency phonon modes. This nanoconfinement may further impact on the Ln3+ luminescence dynamics, such as phonon-assisted energy transfer or upconversion processes. Here, this effect is investigated in Gd2O3:Eu3+ nanotubes. The influence of parameters such as europium concentration and calcination procedure is also studied. Some applications of these lanthanides oxides have been explored, for instance the modification of atomic force microscopy tips with photoluminescent Gd2O3:Eu3+ nanorods, using dielectrophoresis, a technique which preserves the red emission of the nanorods (quantum yield 0.47). The modified tips are stable under working conditions and may find applications in scanning near-field optical microscopy. The liquid-phase oxidation of ethylbenzene over CeO2 nanotubes has been investigated, using tert-butyl-hydroperoxide and H2O2 as the oxidising agents, and acetonitrile as the solvent, in the range 55-105 ºC. Gd2O3:Eu3+ nanorods have been coated with silica via a sol-gel approach. The silica coating increases both, the Eu3+ absolute emission quantum yields from 0.51 to 0.86 (255 nm excitation), and decay times from 1.43 to 1.80 ms (394.4 nm excitation). The silica coating was modified with 3- (trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate and, subsequently, composites have been prepared by in-situ radical polymerisation of styrene via miniemulsion and solution routes.
