The purpose of this study is to analyse the regularity of a differential operator, the Kohn Laplacian, in two settings: the Heisenberg group and the strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds. The Heisenberg group is defined as a space of dimension 2n+1 with a product. It can be seen in two different ways: as a Lie group and as the boundary of the Siegel UpperHalf Space. On the Heisenberg group there exists the tangential CR complex. From this we define its adjoint and the Kohn-Laplacian. Then we obtain estimates for the Kohn-Laplacian and find its solvability and hypoellipticity. For stating L^p and Holder estimates, we talk about homogeneous distributions. In the second part we start working with a manifold M of real dimension 2n+1. We say that M is a CR manifold if some properties are satisfied. More, we say that a CR manifold M is strongly pseudoconvex if the Levi form defined on M is positive defined. Since we will show that the Heisenberg group is a model for the strongly pseudo-convex CR manifolds, we look for an osculating Heisenberg structure in a neighborhood of a point in M, and we want this structure to change smoothly from a point to another. For that, we define Normal Coordinates and we study their properties. We also examinate different Normal Coordinates in the case of a real hypersurface with an induced CR structure. Finally, we define again the CR complex, its adjoint and the Laplacian operator on M. We study these new operators showing subelliptic estimates. For that, we don't need M to be pseudo-complex but we ask less, that is, the Z(q) and the Y(q) conditions. This provides local regularity theorems for Laplacian and show its hypoellipticity on M.

The aim of the present work was to make more accessible a documentary film that focuses on the life and work of the Russian journalist killed in Moscow in 2006: Anna Politkovskaja. The film, entitled “Anna, seven years at the frontline” is a collage of several video-interviews with Politkovskaja’s friends and colleagues, in which they talk about who she was, what was her job about and how she tried to make the public aware about the Chechen wars. Working on this translation gave me a unique opportunity to deepen one of the most controversial issues in the recent history of Russia and to create a useful final product for those who have a particular interest in this topic but do not have the necessary linguistic competence to understand this documentary film.

This dissertation deals with the translations of seven books for children written by the Chicano author Pat Mora. I started to be interested in the Chicano world, a world suspended between Mexico and the United States, after reading a book by Sandra Cisneros. I decided to deepen my curiosity and for this reason, I discovered a hybrid reality full of history, culture and traditions. In this context, the language used is characterized by a continuous code switching between Spanish and English and I thought it was an interesting phenomenon from the literary and translation point of view. During my research in the Chicano culture, I ran across Pat Mora. Her books for children fascinated me because of their actual themes (the cultural diversity and the defense of identity) and their beautiful illustrations. For this reason, I chose to translate seven of her books because I believe they could be an enrichment for children literature in Italy. The work consists of five chapters. The first one deals with the identity of Chicano people, their history, their literature and their language. In the second chapter, I outline Pat Mora’s profile. I talk about her biography and I analyze her most famous works. In the third chapter, I introduce the seven books for children to be translated and I point out their plots and main themes. In the fourth chapter, I present the translation of the books. The fifth chapter is the translation comment. I deal with the linguistic analysis of the source texts and the analysis of the target texts focusing on the choices made during the translation process.

The Copper County Strike of 1913 was heroic, tragic, and large in meaning, both for those who lived in it and for those haunted by it in the years that followed. Carl Ross was born in Hancock only hours before the strike erupted. His father was a printer for Työmies. I had the good fortune to meet Carl and work with him for some twenty years. Carl spoke often of the strike—of what it meant for him, his family, and the radical Finnish community in Superior, Wisconsin, where he grew up. I had never heard of the Copper Country strike before I met Carl, but what I heard about that strike resonated with some of my own experiences. I grew up in New Castle, Indiana, a town that left-wing journalist I.F. Stone called a “labor citadel” in the midst of hostile territory. I want to use these two recollections, Carl’s 1913 Strike reminiscences and my memories of New Castle, to talk about how some strikes carry a moral vision of enormous importance. The presentation will have three parts. In the first part I will relate a little of what Carl had to say about the Copper Country Strike. In the second part I will talk about strikes of my own experience. In the final part, I will talk about the differences in the structures of labor movements and the ethical implications of those differences.

Chapter 1 is used to introduce the basic tools and mechanics used within this thesis. Some historical uses and background are touched upon as well. The majority of the definitions are contained within this chapter as well. In Chapter 2 we consider the question whether one can decompose λ copies of monochromatic Kv into copies of Kk such that each copy of the Kk contains at most one edge from each Kv. This is called a proper edge coloring (Hurd, Sarvate, [29]). The majority of the content in this section is a wide variety of examples to explain the constructions used in Chapters 3 and 4. In Chapters 3 and 4 we investigate how to properly color BIBD(v, k, λ) for k = 4, and 5. Not only will there be direct constructions of relatively small BIBDs, we also prove some generalized constructions used within. In Chapter 5 we talk about an alternate solution to Chapters 3 and 4. A purely graph theoretical solution using matchings, augmenting paths, and theorems about the edgechromatic number is used to develop a theorem that than covers all possible cases. We also discuss how this method performed compared to the methods in Chapters 3 and 4. In Chapter 6, we switch topics to Latin rectangles that have the same number of symbols and an equivalent sized matrix to Latin squares. Suppose ab = n2. We define an equitable Latin rectangle as an a × b matrix on a set of n symbols where each symbol appears either [b/n] or [b/n] times in each row of the matrix and either [a/n] or [a/n] times in each column of the matrix. Two equitable Latin rectangles are orthogonal in the usual way. Denote a set of ka × b mutually orthogonal equitable Latin rectangles as a k–MOELR(a, b; n). We show that there exists a k–MOELR(a, b; n) for all a, b, n where k is at least 3 with some exceptions.

The Chronicle of Matthew of Edessa is a twelfth-century Armenian history that survives in 43 manuscripts, held in ten libraries in eight countries. My task is to create a definitive text that is based on all of them. I will talk about the problems of medieval text editing, the ways in which Perl and phylogenetics have come to my rescue, and show a few pretty pictures of manuscripts

I work in the field of Armenian historiography. This means I get to play with medieval manuscripts. The things I'm doing with the manuscripts are theoretically interesting, but pretty boring in practice, so I'm using Perl to program away the most boring bits. I will talk about the problems of text criticism in general, what sorts of things can and can't be done by the computer, my initial aversion to XML, how I was shown (some of) the error of my ways, and how I'm combining a bunch of isolated pieces of technology that were mostly already in use to achieve fame and fortune in the world of Armenian studies.

After 5 years of conceptualizing, investigating, and writing about corrective experiences (CEs), we (the authors of this chapter) met to talk about what we learned. In this chapter, we summarize our joint understanding of (a) the definition of CEs; (b) the contexts in which CEs occur; (c) client, therapist, and external factors that facilitate CEs; (d) the consequences of CEs; and (e) ideas for future theoretical, clinical, empirical, and training directions. As will become evident, the authors of this chapter, who represent a range of theoretical orientations, reached consensus on some CE-related topics but encountered controversy and lively debate about other topics. Introduction In our program, simulated patients (SPs) give feedback to medical students in the course of communication skills training. To ensure effective training, quality control of the SPs’ feedback should be implemented. At other institutions, medical students evaluate the SPs’ feedback for quality control (Bouter et al., 2012). Thinking about implementing quality control for SPs’ feedback in our program, we wondered whether the evaluation by students would result in the same scores as evaluation by experts. Methods Consultations simulated by 4th-year medical students with SPs were video taped including the SP’s feedback to the students (n=85). At the end of the training sessions students rated the SPs’ performance using a rating instrument called Bernese Assessment for Role-play and Feedback (BARF) containing 11 items concerning feedback quality. Additionally the videos were evaluated by 3 trained experts using the BARF. Results The experts showed a high interrater agreement when rating identical feedbacks (ICCunjust=0.953). Comparing the rating of students and experts, high agreement was found with regard to the following items: 1. The SP invited the student to reflect on the consultation first, Amin (= minimal agreement) 97% 2. The SP asked the student what he/she liked about the consultation, Amin = 88%. 3. The SP started with positive feedback, Amin = 91%. 4. The SP was comparing the student with other students, Amin = 92%. In contrast the following items showed differences between the rating of experts and students: 1. The SP used precise situations for feedback, Amax (=maximal agreement) 55%, Students rated 67 of SPs’ feedbacks to be perfect with regard to this item (highest rating on a 5 point Likert scale), while only 29 feedbacks were rated this way by the experts. 2. The SP gave precise suggestions for improvement, Amax 75%, 62 of SPs’ feedbacks obtained the highest rating from students, while only 44 of SPs’ feedbacks achieved the highest rating in the view of the experts. 3. The SP speaks about his/her role in the third person, Amax 60%. Students rated 77 feedbacks with the highest score, while experts judged only 43 feedbacks this way. Conclusion Although evaluation by the students was in agreement with that of experts concerning some items, students rated the SPs’ feedback more often with the optimal score than experts did. Moreover it seems difficult for students to notice when SPs talk about the role in the first instead of the third person. Since precision and talking about the role in the third person are important quality criteria of feedback, this result should be taken into account when thinking about students’ evaluation of SPs’ feedback for quality control. Persistence of racial and ethnic health disparities and governmental policies based on outdated ideas of aging call for inclusive approaches to the study of elder African Americans. The lived experiences of aging among urban, poor African American women, who comprise a vulnerable population, are not well known, as most studies focus on mainstream populations. Gerontological studies have tended to employ methods that collapse contextual information for ease of analysis, thus failing to capture nuanced information critically relevant to health of marginalized groups. Few researchers have been successful highlighting the importance of local knowledge, resilience, and resources for health by using participatory methods with older Black women. This study utilizes participatory principles to gather discursive data from nine older African American women, engaged in three generational cohorts: those born around World War II, women born after the great depression, and those born before the great depression. Videotaped and transcribed conversations of cohorts were analyzed in search of contextual factors that influence their experience of aging and health. As women responded to general themes that provoked their talk about their lives, they helped answer the study's questions: How do older African American women make sense of their aging experience? What are some of the important social and cultural influences that shape the construction of aging and health by these women? Are generational discourse groups an effective tool for exploring changes in the experiences of aging? A key finding demonstrated rich heterogeneity of experiences with strong generational influences on the construction of aging and health. The participants' moral orders comprised of traditional values of family, reinforced by personal experiences and the church, have guided their lives through oppression and stress but appear to be failing younger women who have greater exposure to new environmental pressures. Limited time and the size of the study were weaknesses although the women's interest in the study and their participation were gratifying. The participants served to highlight the importance of recognizing generational and other contextual factors in formation of ideas of aging and likelihood of additional challenges to the experience of old age among older, poorer, African Americans. ^

El desierto de Lavalle, en el N.E. de la provincia de Mendoza, es un espacio donde a pesar de un fortísimo proceso de aculturación que ha durado cuatro siglos, perviven signos de una cultura que nos remonta a los antiguos Huarpes, habitantes de estas tierras. La extracción de las riquezas del desierto que se realizó durante el s. XIX dejó, al finalizar en el s.XX, una tierra yerma y a los habitantes de este desierto abandonados y en la miseria pero también libres para retomar los viejos patrones de asentamiento disperso, cierto nomadismo, autonomía y libertad que siempre caracterizaron a estos puesteros. En este trabajo intentamos relatar los puntos principales de la historia de este proceso de aculturación, de desertificación antrópica pero también de perduración del habitus que están tratando de rescatar las comunidades Huarpes en la actualidad.

A partir de los cuentos “Artista de variedades", “La fábrica" y “Una partida de tenis" de Daniel Moyano, proponemos un análisis de las distintas “miradas" de la ciudad desde la perspectiva del migrante del interior. En la construcción textual del espacio urbano, surgida, sobre todo, a partir del uso del estilo indirecto libre, se pone en juego, también, la percepción de los personajes sobre sí mismos en ese nuevo espacio. Éstos, en un movimiento pendular, se interrogan sobre su propia identidad, que construyen y reconstruyen permanentemente a través del abandono de viejas imágenes de identificación relacionadas con el pueblo de origen y la incorporación de modelos nuevos propuestos por la ciudad.

En este nuevo número de los Cuadernos del CILHA que el lector tiene en sus manos se ha reunido un conjunto de trabajos que, por la diversa procedencia institucional de cada uno de sus autores, nos permite asomarnos panorámicamente a algunas líneas de trabajo que en la actualidad se desarrollan en torno a la literatura hispanoamericana. Así por ejemplo resultan interesantes los trabajos de Mariana Catalin “La proliferación del yo…", Mariana Libertad Suárez “Perdón o condena: discurso y subjetividad…" y Betina Keizman “Entre el testimonio y la autobiografía…", que se ocupan de la subjetividad hispanoamericana, a través de una abordaje que va de la problemática genérica a la lectura crítica de los textos narrativos o autobiográficos. Se vincula con esta línea mencionada, el artículo de Ramiro Zó que aborda en “Funciones de la novela sentimental…", la cuestión de la novela sentimental durante el siglo XIX. Cabe indicar al respecto que el trabajo de Zó puede situarse en la categoría de los pioneros, ya que no abundan las investigaciones sobre esta temática. Pablo Martínez Gramuglia se ocupa, por su lado, de la obra de Leopoldo Marechal destacando las relaciones entre el mito y la política. Los trabajos restantes de la Sección Misceláneas se refieren a Arturo Uslar Pietri, de quien en el 2006 se cumplió el primer centenario de su nacimiento. María Antonia Zandanel (“ Pizarrón. Una escritura…") se encarga de analizar la escritura ensayística del notable escritor venezolano y Laura Febres (“Arturo Uslar Pietri el artífice de la…") de la narrativa. Finalmente, se publica el texto de Mario Cámara “Algunos elogios posibles para Glauco Mattoso". La decisión de ir sumando investigaciones sobre la literatura brasilera resulta para nosotros muy valioso, de manera que esperamos incrementar el número de artículos sobre la literatura y la cultura del Brasil. Reglón aparte merece el dossier “El ensayo latinoamericano". Marcos Olalla ha sido el responsable de reunir estos textos. No vamos a sobreabundar en lo ya escrito por él en la excelente introducción al dossier. Nos importa subrayar únicamente el interés que puede tener este esfuerzo en virtud de que los artículos concretan notables aportes a la problemática del género como también actualizan la lectura de algunos textos a esta altura canónicos del ensayo.

Se presenta un panorama de las distintas manifestaciones del ensayo escrito en el ámbito latinoamericano de las últimas décadas del siglo XX, y se considera que ha seguido un proceso por el que el género pasa de una etapa de normalización que identificamos como “tierra firme" a una etapa de fuertes cambios y transformaciones que nos llevan a hablar de “un género sin orillas". Se propone una interpretación de conjunto de sus principales tendencias, entre esos dos extremos que reconocemos como forma de la moral y moral de la forma y entre esos dos quehaceres que, retomando una distinción hecha por Ricardo Piglia, denominamos el pensar y el decir.
