Ionic Liquid Effect on the Reversal of Configuration for the Magnesium(II) and Copper(II) Bis(oxazoline)-Catalysed Enantioselective Diels-Alder Reaction

Ionic liquids have been used to support a range of magnesium-and copper-based bis(oxazoline) complexes for the enantioselective Diels-Alder reaction between N-acryloyloxazolidinone and cyclopentadiene. Compared with reaction performed in dichloromethane or diethyl ether, an enhancement in ee is observed with a large increase in reaction rate. In addition, for non-sterically hindered bis(oxazoline) ligands, that is, phenyl functionalised ligands, a reversal in configuration is found in the ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide], compared with molecular solvents. Supported ionic liquid phase catalysts have also been developed using surface-modified silica which show good reactivity and enantioselectivity for the case of the magnesium-based bis(oxazoline) complexes. Poor ees and conversion were observed for the analogous copper-based systems. Some drop in ee was found on supporting the catalyst due a drop in the rate of reaction and, therefore, an increase in the contribution from the uncatalysed a chiral reaction.

Same sex attraction, homophobic bullying and mental health of young people in Northern Ireland

This article reports on the relationship between same-sex attraction, experience of bullying in school and mental health measured using the 12-item version of the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ12). A random sample of 16 year olds, drawn from the Child Benefit Register, was invited to take part in the 2005 Young Life and Times survey, which is a postal survey carried out in Northern Ireland every year. Eight hundred and nineteen 16 year olds responded, which represented a return rate of 40%. The results of the survey showed that respondents who said they had been attracted to a person of the same sex at least once were significantly more likely to report experiences of school bullying. Same-sex-attracted 16 year olds were significantly less likely than those attracted to persons of the opposite sex only to say that their school provided real help to those who are being bullied. The 2005 Young Life and Times data also indicated that same-sex-attracted respondents were more than twice as likely as respondents who were only attracted to people of the opposite sex to have higher levels of psychiatric disorder. Cooling and changing seasonality in the Southern Alps, New Zealand during the Antarctic Cold Reversal

A comprehensively C-14 AMS dated pollen and chironomid record from Boundary Stream Tarn provides the first chironomid-derived temperature reconstruction to quantify temperature change during Lateglacial times (17,500-10,000 cal yr BP) in the Southern Alps, New Zealand. The records indicate a ca 1000-year disruption to the Lateglacial warming trend and an overall cooling consistent with the Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR). The main interval of chironomid-inferred summer temperature depression (similar to 2-3 degrees C) lasted about 700 years during the ACR. Following this cooling event, both proxies indicate a warming step to temperatures slightly cooler than present during the Younger Dryas chronozone (12,900-11,500 cal yr BP). These results highlight a direct linkage between Antarctica and mid-latitude terrestrial climate systems and the largely asynchronous nature of the interhemispheric climate system during the last glacial transition. The greater magnitude of temperature changes shown by the chironomid record is attributed to the response of the proxies to differences in seasonal climate with chironomids reflecting summer temperature and vegetation more strongly controlled by duration of winter or by minimum temperatures. These differences imply stronger seasonality at times during the Lateglacial, which may explain some of the variability between other paleoclimate records from New Zealand and have wider implications for understanding differences between proxy records for abrupt climate change.
