Titanium carbide (TiC) is an electrically conducting material with favorable electrochemical properties. In the present studies, carbon-doped TiO2 (C-TiO2) has been synthesized from TiC particles, as well as TiC films coated on stainless steel substrate via thermal annealing under various conditions. Several C-TiO2 substrates are synthesized by varying experimental, conditions and characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic techniques. C-TiO2 in the dry state (in powder form as well as in film form) is subsequently used as a substrate for enhancing Raman signals corresponding to 4-mercaptobenzoic acid and 4-nitrothiophenol by utilizing chemical enhancement based on charge-transfer interactions. Carbon, a nonmetal dopant in TiO2, improves the intensities of Raman signals, compared, to undoped TiO2. Significant dependence of Raman intensity on carbon doping is observed. Ameliorated performance obtained using C-TiO2 is attributed to the presence of surface defects that originate due to carbon as a dopant, which, in turn,, triggers charge transfer between TiO2 and analyte. The C-TiO2 substrates are subsequently regenerated for repetitive use by illuminating an analyte-adsorbed substrate with visible light for a period of 5 h.

We report a simple, reliable and one-step method of synthesizing ZnO porous structures at room temperature by anodization of zinc (Zn) sheet with water as an electrolyte and graphite as a counter electrode. We observed that the de-ionized (DI) water used in the experiment is slightly acidic (pH=5.8), which is due to the dissolution of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere forming carbonic acid. Porous ZnO is characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) studies. The current-transient measurement is carried out using a Gamry Instruments Reference 3000 and the thickness of the deposited films is measured using a Dektak surface profilometer. The PL, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are used to confirm the presence of ZnO phase. We have demonstrated that the hybrid structures of ZnO and poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) exhibit good rectifying characteristics. The evaluated barrier height and the ideality factor are 0.45 eV and 3.6, respectively.

We report a simple, template free and low-temperature hydrothermal reaction pathway using Cu(II) - thiourea complex (prepared in situ from copper (II) chloride and thiourea as precursors) and citric acid as complexing agent to synthesize two-dimensional hierarchical nano-structures of covellite (CuS). The product was characterized with the help of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive analysis of X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The concentration of citric acid in the hydrothermal precursor solution was seen to have a profound effect on the nanostructure of the product generated. Based on the outcoming product nano-architecture at different concentration of the ionic surfactant in the hydrothermal precursor solution a possible mechanism suited for reaction and further nucleation is also discussed. Recently nano scale zero valent iron particles (nZVI) have been considered as smart adsorbent for environmental and groundwater remediation. Although several synthetic methods are available for the preparation of nZVI, air stable nZVI are not available for remediation works. Further, challenges demand synthesis of nZVI without stabilizers and capping agents. A modified methodology for the synthesis of air stable nZVI has been developed without any capping agents and characterized by powder X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy Energy-dispersive X-Ray (SEM-EDS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The results of the present study suggest that the synthetic nZVI are air-stable over a period of one year and consists of particles of 30-40 nm in diameter. Although a layer of less than 3 am thick oxide/hydroxide is observed by TEM and XPS, it appears to be due to oxidation of outer surface during analysis. Adsorption study has shown that the synthetic nZVI are more effective adsorbent than the commercial nZVI and can remove simultaneously arsenite As-III] and arsenate As-V] from water without prior reduction of As-V to As-III. The removal process is adsorptive rather than precipitative and the removal of As-III is greater than that of As-V.

Lead Telluride (PbTe) with bismuth secondary phase embedded in the bulk has been prepared by matrix encapsulation technique. X-Ray Diffraction results indicated crystalline PbTe, while Rietveld analysis showed that Bi did not substitute at either Pb or Te site, which was further confirmed by Raman and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. Scanning Electron Microscopy showed the expected presence of a secondary phase, while Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy results showed a slight deficiency of tellurium in the PbTe matrix, which might have occurred during synthesis due to higher vapor pressure of Te. Transmission Electron Microscopy results did not show any nanometer sized Bi phase. Seebeck coefficient (S) and electrical conductivity (sigma) were measured from room temperature to 725 K. A decrease in S and sigma with increasing Bi content showed an increased scattering of electrons from PbTe-Bi interfaces, along with a possible electron acceptor role of Bi secondary phase. An overall decrease in the power factor was thus observed. Thermal conductivity, measured from 400K to 725K, was smaller at starting temperature with increasing Bi concentration, and almost comparable to that of PbTe at higher temperatures, indicating a more important role of electrons as compared to phonons at PbTe-Bi interfaces. Still, a reasonable zT of 0.8 at 725K was achieved for undoped PbTe, but no improvement was found for bismuth added samples with micrometer inclusions. 8MeV electron irradiation effects on thioglycolic acid (TGA)-capped CdTe quantum dots (QD) are discussed in this study. CdTe QDs were characterized using x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Steady-state and time-resolved emission spectroscopy and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy were performed before and after irradiation with 8MeV electrons. XRD and TEM confirm the growth of TGA-capped CdTe QDs. The photoemission wavelength, intensity and lifetimes were found to vary with electron dose. At lower doses, they were found to be increasing (red-shift of photoluminescence (PL) peak and intensity) while the intensity decreased at higher electron doses. The observed changes in PL property, XPS and XRD analysis suggest possible epitaxial growth of the CdS shell on the CdTe core. This work demonstrates electron beam induced formation of the CdS layer on the CdTe core, which is a key step towards growth of the water soluble CdTe/CdS core-shell structure for biomedical labelling applications.

The substrate effect on InN nanostructures grown by droplet epitaxy has been studied. InN nanostructures were fabricated on Si(111), silicon nitride/Si(111), AlN/Si(111) and Ge(100) substrates by droplet epitaxy using an RF plasma nitrogen source. The morphologies of InN nanostructures were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The chemical bonding configurations of InN nanostructures were examined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Photoluminescence spectrum slightly blue shifted compared to the bulk InN, indicating a strong Burstein-Moss effect due to the presence of high electron concentration in the InN dots.

The identification of the damage mechanisms involved in the wear process demands the finer scale characterization of the surface, as well as the subsurface region of the wear scar region, and to this end, this article discusses the results obtained with Cu-10 wt% Pb-based metallic nanocomposites using a host of characterization techniques, including transmission electron microscopy and ion milling microscopy. Apart from finer scale characterization to understand deformation and cracking during the wear process, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of wear debris confirms the occurrence of oxidation of Pb phase to Pb3O4. In order to understand the role of oxides on friction and wear, sliding wear tests in argon were also carried out and such tests did not result in the formation of any tribo-oxides, as confirmed using electron probe microanalysis. Conclusively, oxidative wear is attributed as the dominant wear mechanism in ambient conditions for Cu-10 wt% Pb composite.

Electrodeposition of Co-W alloy coatings has been carried out with DC and PC using gluconate bath at different pH. These coatings are characterized for their structure, morphology and chemical composition by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Alloy coatings plated at pH8 are crystalline, whereas coatings electrodeposited at pH5 are nanocrystalline in nature. XPS studies have demonstrated that as-deposited alloy plated at pH8 with DC contain only Co2+ and W6+ species, whereas that alloy plated at pH5 has significant amount of Co-0 and W-0 along with Co2+ and W6+ species. Again, Co2+ and W6+ are main species in all as-deposited PC plated alloys in both pH. Co-0 concentration increases upon successive sputtering of all alloy coatings. In contrast, mainly W6+ species is detected in the following layers of all alloys plated with PC. Alloys plated at pH5 show higher microhardness compared to their pH8 counterparts.

In the quest for more efficient photoanodes in the photoelectrochemical oxidation processes for organic pollutant degradation and mineralisation in water treatment, we present the synthesis, characterisation and photoelectrochemical application of expanded graphite-TiO2 composite (EG-TiO2) prepared using the sol-gel method with organically modified silicate. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analyser, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, Raman spectrometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed for the characterisation of the composites. The applicability of the EG-TiO2 as photoanode material was investigated by the photoelectrochemical degradation of p-nitrophenol as a target pollutant in a 0.1 M Na2SO4 (pH 7) solution at a current density of 5 mA cm(-2). After optimising the TiO2 loading, initial p-nitrophenol concentration, pH and current density, a removal efficiency of 62% with an apparent kinetic rate constant of 10.4 x 10(-3) min(-1) was obtained for the photoelectrochemical process as compared to electrochemical oxidation and photolysis, where removal efficiencies of 6% and 24% were obtained respectively after 90 min. Furthermore, the EG-TiO2 electrode was able to withstand high current density due to its high stability. The EG-TiO2 electrode was also used to degrade 0.3 x 10(-4) M methylene blue and 0.1 x 10(-4) M Eosin Yellowish, leading to 94% and 47% removal efficiency within 120 reaction time. This confirms the suitability of the EG-TiO2 electrode to degrade other organic pollutants.

Thin films of alumina (Al2O3) were deposited over Si < 1 0 0 > substrates at room temperature at an oxygen gas pressure of 0.03 Pa and sputtering power of 60 W using DC reactive magnetron sputtering. The composition of the as-deposited film was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the O/Al atomic ratio was found to be 1.72. The films were then annealed in vacuum to 350, 550 and 750 degrees C and X-ray diffraction results revealed that both as-deposited and post deposition annealed films were amorphous. The surface morphology and topography of the films was studied using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, respectively. A progressive decrease in the root mean square (RMS) roughness of the films from 1.53 nm to 0.7 nm was observed with increase in the annealing temperature. Al-Al2O3-Al thin film capacitors were then fabricated on p-type Si < 1 0 0 > substrate to study the effect of temperature and frequency on the dielectric property of the films and the results are discussed.

CsI can be used as a photocathode material in UV photon detectors. The detection efficiency of the detector strongly depends on the photoemission property of the photocathode. CsI is very hygroscopic in nature. This limits the photoelectron yield from the photocathode when exposed to humid air even for a short duration during photocathode mounting or transfer. We report here on the improvement of photoemission properties of both thick (300 nm) and thin (30 nm) UV-sensitive CsI film exposed to humid air by the process of vacuum treatment. Comparison of ZnO films deposited on indium tin oxide and soda lime glass under identical conditions
Resumo:
ZnO films have been grown via a vapour phase transport (VPT) on soda lime glass (SLG) and indium-tin oxide (ITO) coated glass. ZnO film on ITO had traces of Zn and C which gives them a dark appearance while that appears yellowish-white on SLG. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies confirm the traces of C in the form of C-O. The photoluminescence studies reveal a prominent green luminescence band for ZnO film on ITO. (C) 2013 Author(s).

The effect of annealing on structural defects and d(0) ferromagnetism in SnO2 nanoparticles prepared by solution combustion method is investigated. The as-synthesized SnO2 nanoparticles were annealed at 400-800 degrees C for 2 h, in ambient conditions. The crystallinity, size, and morphology of the samples were studied using x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies. The annealing results in grain growth due to coarsening as well as reduction in oxygen vacancies as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All the as synthesized and annealed samples exhibit room temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM) with distinct hysteresis loops and the saturation magnetization as high as similar to 0.02 emu/g in as-synthesized samples. However, the saturation magnetization is drastically reduced with increasing annealing temperature. Further the presence of singly charged oxygen vacancies (V-o(-) signal at g-value 1.99) is confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance studies, which also diminish with increasing annealing temperature. The observed diminishing RTFM and simultaneous evidences of diminishing O vacancies clearly indicate that RTFM is driven by defects in oxide lattice and confirms primary role of oxygen vacancies in inducing ferromagnetic ordering in metal oxide semiconductors. The study also provides improved fundamental understanding regarding the ambiguity in the origin of intrinsic RTFM in semiconducting metal oxides and projects their technological application in the field of spintronics. We have analyzed the characteristics of electrodes made of TiO2 nanotubes, microspheres and commercially available nanoparticles for dye sensitized solar cell. The morphology of the electrodes and the formation of aggregates have been analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and surface profiling technique. The concentration of Ti3+ type impurity state on the surface of these electrodes is quantified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Micro structural properties have been characterized by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller method The optical properties of the electrodes such as band gap energy, the type of band formation and the diffuse reflectance are evaluated by UV-Visible spectroscopy. The photovoltaic characteristics of dye solar cell made of these electrodes have been evaluated and it is found that the characteristics of the TiO2 film alone can alter the overall conversion efficiency to a great extent. Additional analysis using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy has been carried out to probe the electron transport properties and charge collection efficiency of these electrodes.
