Within the De optimum genere oratorum we can find the statements of a Rhetoric of Translation (106-43 B. C.) where Cicero defines a set of discursive rules considered necessary for an efficient translatorial act. As his ideas about translation are reviewed, this article aims to present some important theoretical aspects of Cicero’s thought and to display his practice through the commentary of a short excerpt from Homer translated by him.

This article discusses the preservation of cultural heritage, particularly the historical and architectural, in small municipalities in São Paulo State, in particular the Central Administrative Region. It pointed out that urban planning and master plans may represent an opportunity for such municipalities definitely incorporate preservation, locally. It also presents a small survey of considerations of national heritage at the municipal level and by CONDEPHAAT and IPHAN.

Behavioral data on Neotropical coenagrionids is still scanty, with very few studies on their reproductive behavior. Here we present the first description of the reproductive behavior of A. truncatum in a high density population in the Brazilian Neotropical savanna. The observations were made at a pond in an ecological reserve. Males remain at the water searching for females. Females remain in the surrounding vegetation and only approach the water to mate and oviposit. The mean duration of copulation was 25.6 +/- 3.26 minutes. Copulations are concentrated between 12:00 and 14:00 h (71%). Females oviposit in tandem with males, sometimes submerging to oviposit. Oviposition took 43.08 +/- 22.17 minutes. Female underwater oviposition seems to disrupt male guarding and females emerge from the water by themselves. Malemale interactions usually consist of chases and facing off. This damselfly species is apparently non-territorial, since males did not defend resources and searched for females in the area.

The Alpine region is warming fast, and concurrently, the frequency and intensity of climate extremes are increasing. It is currently unclear whether alpine ecosystems are sensitive or resistant to such extremes. We subjected Swiss alpine grassland communities to heat waves with varying intensity by transplanting monoliths to four different elevations (2440–660 m above sea level) for 17 d. Half of these were regularly irrigated while the other half were deprived of irrigation to additionally induce a drought at each site. Heat waves had no significant impacts on fluorescence (Fv/Fm, a stress indicator), senescence and aboveground productivity if irrigation was provided. However, when heat waves coincided with drought, the plants showed clear signs of stress, resulting in vegetation browning and reduced phytomass production. This likely resulted from direct drought effects, but also, as measurements of stomatal conductance and canopy temperatures suggest, from increased high-temperature stress as water scarcity decreased heat mitigation through transpiration. The immediate responses to heat waves (with or without droughts) recorded in these alpine grasslands were similar to those observed in the more extensively studied grasslands from temperate climates. Responses following climate extremes may differ in alpine environments, however, because the short growing season likely constrains recovery.

Samples for total organic carbon (TOC) analysis were collected on WOCE Line P15S (0° to 67°S along 170°W) and from 53° to 67°S along 170°E in the western South Pacific, and on Line I8 (5°N to 43°S along 80°/90°E) in the central Indian Ocean. TOC concentrations in the upper ocean varied greatly between the regions studied. Highest surface TOC concentrations (81-85 µM C and 68-73 µM C) were observed in the warmest waters (>27°C) of the western South Pacific and central Indian Oceans, respectively. Lowest surface TOC concentrations (45-65 µM C) were recorded in the southernmost waters occupied (>50°S along 170°W and 170°E). Deep water (>1000 m) TOC concentrations were uniform across all regions analyzed, averaging between 42.3 and 43 µM C (SD: ±0.9 µM C). Mixing between TOC-rich surface waters and TOC-poor deep waters was indicated by the strong correlations between TOC and temperature (r2>0.80, north of 45°S) and TOC and density (r2>0.50, southernmost regions). TOC was inversely correlated with apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) along isopycnal surfaces north of the Polar Frontal Zone (PFZ) and at depths <500 m. The TOC:AOU molar ratios at densities of sigmaT 23-27 ranged from -0.15 to -0.34 in the South Pacific and from -0.13 to -0.31 in the Indian Ocean. These ratios indicate that TOC oxidation was responsible for 21%-47% and 18%-43% of oxygen consumption in the upper South Pacific and Indian Oceans, respectively. At greater depths, TOC did not contribute to the development of AOU. There was no evidence for significant export of dissolved and suspended organic carbon along isopycnal surfaces that ventilate near the PFZ.
