The present work is aimed at studying the influence of electrolyte chemistry on the voltage-time (V-T) response characteristics, phase structure, surface morphology, film growth rate and corrosion properties of titania films fabricated by micro arc oxidation (MAO) on Cp Ti. The titania films were developed with a sodium phosphate based reference electrolyte comprising the additives such as sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), sodium nitrite (NaNO2) and urea (CO(NH2)(2)). The phase composition, surface morphology, elemental composition and thickness of the films were assessed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The corrosion characteristics of the fabricated films were studied under Kokubo simulated body fluid (SBF) condition by potentiodynamic polarization, long term potential and linear polarization resistance (LPR) measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. In addition, the corrosion characteristics of the grown films were analyzed by EIS curve fitting and equivalent circuit modeling. Salt spray test (SST) as per ASTM B 117 standard was also conducted to verify the corrosion resistance of the grown films. The XRD results showed that the titania films were composed of both anatase and rutile phases at different proportions. Besides, the films grown in carbonate and nitrite containing electrolyte systems showed an enhanced growth of their rutile phase in the 1 0 1] direction which could be attributed to the modifications introduced in the growth process by the abundant oxygen available during the process. The SEM-EDX and elemental mapping results showed that the respective electrolyte borne elements were incorporated and distributed uniformly in all the films. Among all the grown films under study, the film developed in carbonate containing electrolyte system exhibited considerably improved corrosion resistance due to suitable modifications in its structural and morphological characteristics. The rate of anatase to rutile phase transformation and the rutile growth direction were strongly influenced by the abundant oxidizing species available during the film growth process. In this paper, we report a synthesis, characterization and electrochemical properties of V2O5 nanobelts. V2O5 nanobelts have been prepared via hydrothermal treatment of commercial V2O5 in acidic (HCl/H2SO4) medium at relatively low temperature (160 degrees C). The hydrothermally derived products have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-Vis spectroscopy, Scanning/Transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM). XRD pattern of V2O5 nanobelts show an orthorhombic phase. From the FTIR spectrum, the peak observed at 1018 cm-1 is characteristic of the stretching vibration mode of the terminal vanadyl, V = O. The UV-Vis absorption spectrum of V2O5 nanobelts show maximum absorbance at 430 nm, which was blue-shifted compared to that of bulk V2O5. TEM micrographs reveal that the products consist of nanobelts of 40-200 nm in thickness and several tens of micrometers in length. The electrochemical analysis shows an initial discharge capacity of 360 mAh g-1 and its almost stabilized capacity is reached to 250 mAh g-1 after 55 cycles. A probable reaction mechanism for the formation of orthorhombic V2O5 nanobelts is proposed.

Many problems of state estimation in structural dynamics permit a partitioning of system states into nonlinear and conditionally linear substructures. This enables a part of the problem to be solved exactly, using the Kalman filter, and the remainder using Monte Carlo simulations. The present study develops an algorithm that combines sequential importance sampling based particle filtering with Kalman filtering to a fairly general form of process equations and demonstrates the application of a substructuring scheme to problems of hidden state estimation in structures with local nonlinearities, response sensitivity model updating in nonlinear systems, and characterization of residual displacements in instrumented inelastic structures. The paper also theoretically demonstrates that the sampling variance associated with the substructuring scheme used does not exceed the sampling variance corresponding to the Monte Carlo filtering without substructuring. In this work, we have synthesized a series of TDPP derivatives with different alkyl groups such as n-hexyl (-C6H13) 3a, 2-ethylhexyl (-(2-C2H5)C6H12) 3b, triethylene glycol mono methyl ether (-(CH2CH2O)(3c)H-3, TEG) 3c, and octadodecyl (-(8-C8H17)C12H22) 3d. N,N dialkylation of Othiophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole (TDPP, 1) strongly influences its solubility, solid state packing, and structural order. These materials allow us to explicitly study the influence of alkyl chain on solid state packing and photophysical properties. TDPP moiety containing two different alkyl groups 3e (TEG and 2-ethylhexyl) and 3f (TEG and n-hexyl) were synthesized for the first time. The absorption spectra of all derivatives exhibited a red shift in solid state when compared to their solution spectra. The type of alkyl chains leads to change in the optical band gaps in solid state. The fluorescence study reveals that TDPP derivatives have strong pi-pi interaction in the solid state and the extent of bathochromic shift is due to combination of intramolecular interaction and formation of aggregates in solid state. This behavior strongly depends on the nature of alkyl chain. The presence of strong C-H center dot center dot center dot O inter chain interactions and CH-pi interactions in solid state exhibits strong influence on the photophysical properties of TDPP chromophore.

The tensile behavior of a high activity stand-alone Pt-aluminide (PtAl) bond coat was evaluated by the micro-tensile test method at various temperatures (room temperature to 1100 degrees C) and strain rates (10(-5) s(-1)-10(-1) s(-1).) At all strain rates, the stress strain behavior of the stand-alone coating was significantly affected by the variation in temperature. The stress strain response was linear, indicating brittle behavior, at temperatures below the brittle ductile transition temperature (BDTT). The coating exhibited appreciable ductility (up to 2%) above the BDTT. The strength (both yield stress and ultimate tensile strength) of the coating decreased and its ductility increased with increasing temperature above the BDTT. The tensile behavior of the coating was sensitive to strain rate in the ductile regime, with its strength increasing with increasing strain rate at any given temperature. The BDTT of the coating was found to increase with increasing with increasing strain rate. The coating exhibited two distinct mechanisms of deformation above the BDTT. The transition temperature for the change of deformation mechanism also increased with increasing strain rate. (C) 2012 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Uniform La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 (LSMO) nanotubes of an average diameter 180 nm were synthesized by a modified sol-gel method employing nanochannel porous anodic alumina templates. The nanotubes were characterized chemically and structurally by XRD, SEM, EDX, and TEM. Postannealed (700 degrees C for 1 h hour) nanotubes were found to be polycrystalline from XRD and SAED studies. To get further insight into the nanotube structure, HRTEM studies were done, which revealed that obtained LSMO nanotubes were structurally constituted with nanoparticles of 3-12 nm size. These constituent nanoparticles were randomly aligned and self-knitted to build the nanotube wall. Investigation of magnetic properties at this structured nanoscale revealed remarkable irreversibility between the zero field cooling (ZFC) and field cooling (FC) magnetization curves accompanied with a peak in the ZFC curve indicating spin-glass-like behavior. Structural defects and compositional variations at surfaces and grain-boundaries of constituent nanoparticles might be responsible for this anomalous magnetic behavior.

We investigated the structural and magnetic properties of SmCo5/Co exchange coupled nanocomposite thin films grown by magnetron sputtering from Sm and Co multitargets successively. The growth of the films was carried out at elevated substrate temperature followed by in situ annealing. On Si (100) substrate, X-ray diffraction confirms the formation of textured (110) SmCo5 hard phase, whereas on MgO (110) substrate, the diffraction pattern shows the epitaxial growth of SmCo5 phase with crystalline orientation along 100] direction. Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy reveals the structural transformation from multilayered (Sm/Co) to SmCo5/Co nano-composite films due to high reactivity of Sm at elevated temperature. Transmission electron microscopy indicates the existence of nanocrystalline phase of SmCo5 along with unreacted Co. Observed single phase behavior in magnetic hysteresis measurements indicates well exchange coupling between the soft and the hard phases in these nano-composite films. For samples with samarium layer thickness, t(sm)=3.2 nm and cobalt layer thickness, t(Co)= 11.4 nm, the values of (BH)(max) were obtained as 20.1 MGOe and 12.38 MGOe with H-c value similar to 3.0 kOe grown on MgO and Si substrates, respectively.

The plastic deformation behavior and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in homogenized AZ31 Mg alloy was investigated in uniaxial compression in the temperature range between 150 and 400 degrees C with strain rates ranging from 10(-3) to 10(2) s(-1). Twinning was found to contribute significantly during the early stages of deformation. The onset of twinning was examined in detail by recourse to the examination of the appearance of first local maxima before peak strain in the stress-strain responses and the second derivative of stress with strain. High strain hardening rate was observed immediately after the onset of twinning and was found to increase with the Zener-Hollomon parameter. DRX was observed at temperatures above 250 degrees C whereas deformation at lower temperatures (< 250 degrees C) leads to extensive twinning at all the strain rates. At intermediate temperatures of 250-300 degrees C, plastic strains tend to localize near grain/twin boundaries, confining DRX only to these regions. Increase in the temperature promotes non-basal slip, which, in turn, leads to uniform deformation; DRX too becomes uniform. Deformation behavior in three different regimes of temperature is discussed. The dependence of critical stress for the onset of DRX and peak flow stress on temperature and strain rate are also described. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A new 3D cadmium(II) coordination polymer, Cd(C2O4)(0.5)Cl(H2O)](n) (1) has been synthesized from a mixture of CdCl2. H2O and (NH4)(2)C2O4 in a slightly acidic pH. Its molecular structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction which reveals that the new polymeric structure consists of simultaneous mu(4)-oxalato, mu-aquo, and mu-chlorido bridges between the metal centers, embedded in distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometries. On thermal analysis compound exhibits high thermal stability up to 330 degrees C. Compound 1 also exhibits strong fluorescent emission. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We study absorption spectra and two photon absorption coefficient of expanded porphyrins (EPs) by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique. We employ the Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) Hamiltonian which includes long-range electron-electron interactions. We find that, in the 4n+2 EPs, there are two prominent low-lying one-photon excitations, while in 4n EPs, there is only one such excitation. We also find that 4n+2 EPs have large two-photon absorption cross sections compared to 4n EPs. The charge density rearrangement in the one-photon excited state is mostly at the pyrrole nitrogen site and at the meso carbon sites. In the two-photon states, the charge density rearrangement occurs mostly at the aza-ring sites. In the one-photon state, the C-C bond length in aza rings shows a tendency to become uniform. In the two-photon state, the bond distortions are on C-N bonds of the pyrrole ring and the adjoining C-C bonds which connect the pyrrole ring to the aza or meso carbon sites.

Although weak interactions, such as C-H center dot center dot center dot O and pi-stacking, are generally considered to be insignificant, it is their reorganization that holds the key for many a solid-state phenomenon, such as phase transitions, plastic deformation, elastic flexibility, and mechanochromic luminescence in solid-state fluorophores. Despite this, the role of weak interactions in these dynamic phenomena is poorly understood. In this study, we investigate two co-crystal polymorphs of caffeine:4-chloro-3-nitrobenzoic acid, which have close structural similarity (2D layered structures), but surprisingly show distinct mechanical behavior. Form I is brittle, but shows shear-induced phase instability and, upon grinding, converts to Form II, which is soft and plastically shearable. This observation is in contrast to those reported in earlier studies on aspirin, wherein the metastable drug forms are softer and convert to stable and harder forms upon stressing To establish a molecular level understanding, have investigated the two co-crystal polymorphs I and II by single crystal X-ray diffraction, nanoindentation to quantify mechanical properties, and theoretical calculations. The lower hardness (from nanoindentation) and smooth potential surfaces (from theoretical studies) for shearing of layers in Form II allowed us to rationalize the role of stronger intralayer (sp(2))C-H center dot center dot center dot O and nonspecific interlayer pi-stacking interactions in the structure of II. Although the Form I also possesses the same type of interactions, its strength is clearly opposite, that is, weaker intralayer (sp(3))C-H center dot center dot center dot O and specific interlayer pi-stacking interactions. Hence, Form I is harder than Form IL Theoretical calculations and indentation on (111) of Form I suggested the low resistance of this face to mechanical stress; thus, Form I converts to II upon mechanical action. Hence, our approach demonstrates the usefulness of multiple techniques for establishing the role of weak noncovalent interactions in solid-state dynamic phenomena, such as stress induced phase transformation, and hence is important in the context of solid-state pharmaceutical chemistry and crystal engineering.

Nanoindentation is a technique which can be used to measure the mechanical properties of materials with high precision, even when they are only available in small quantities. As a result of this, nanoindentation has gained the attention of the crystal engineering community, who are not only interested in measuring the properties of single crystals of organic, inorganic and hybrid structures, but also wish to correlate the measured responses with the underlying structural features and intermolecular interactions. Keeping this emerging interest in view, a brief overview of the technique, with particular emphasis on the procedures for conducting experiments and analyzing the resulting data, is presented in this Tutorial style Highlight. The precautions that need to be taken and the properties that one can measure using nanoindentation are highlighted. This paper ends with a brief summary of the recent additional features that have been added to this technique and an outlook for nanoindentation within the context of crystal engineering.

Impoverishment of particles, i.e. the discretely simulated sample paths of the process dynamics, poses a major obstacle in employing the particle filters for large dimensional nonlinear system identification. A known route of alleviating this impoverishment, i.e. of using an exponentially increasing ensemble size vis-a-vis the system dimension, remains computationally infeasible in most cases of practical importance. In this work, we explore the possibility of unscented transformation on Gaussian random variables, as incorporated within a scaled Gaussian sum stochastic filter, as a means of applying the nonlinear stochastic filtering theory to higher dimensional structural system identification problems. As an additional strategy to reconcile the evolving process dynamics with the observation history, the proposed filtering scheme also modifies the process model via the incorporation of gain-weighted innovation terms. The reported numerical work on the identification of structural dynamic models of dimension up to 100 is indicative of the potential of the proposed filter in realizing the stated aim of successfully treating relatively larger dimensional filtering problems. We demonstrate the electrical transport behavior of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) upon exposure to organic analytes (namely ethanol, benzene, acetone and toluene). The resulting nonlinear current-voltage characteristics revealed a power law dependence of the differential conductivity on the applied bias voltage. Moreover, suppression of differential conductivity at zero bias is found to be dependent on different selective analytes. The power law exponent values have been monitored before, during and after exposure to the chemicals, which revealed a reversible change in the number of electron conducting channels. Therefore, the reduction in the number of conductive paths can be attributed to the interaction of the chemical analyte on the CNT surfaces, which causes a decrease in the differential conductivity of the CNT sample. These results demonstrate chemical selectivity of CNTs due to varying electronic interaction with different chemical analytes.

Lamins are intermediate filament proteins of type V constituting a nuclear lamina or filamentous meshwork which lines the nucleoplasmic side of the inner nuclear membrane. This protein mesh provides a supporting scaffold for the nuclear envelope and tethers interphase chromosome to the nuclear periphery. Mutations of mainly A-type lamins are found to be causative for at least 11 human diseases collectively termed as laminopathies majority of which are characterised by aberrant nuclei with altered structural rigidity, deformability and poor mechanotransduction behaviour. But the investigation of viscoelastic behavior of lamin A continues to elude the field. In order to address this problem, we hereby present the very first report on viscoelastic properties of wild type human lamin A and some of its mutants linked with Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) using quantitative rheological measurements. We observed a dramatic strain-softening effect on lamin A network as an outcome of the strain amplitude sweep measurements which could arise from the large compliance of the quasi-cross-links in the network or that of the lamin A rods. In addition, the drastic stiffening of the differential elastic moduli on superposition of rotational and oscillatory shear stress reflect the increase in the stiffness of the laterally associated lamin A rods. These findings present a preliminary insight into distinct biomechanical properties of wild type lamin A protein and its mutants which in turn revealed interesting differences.
