A dimensionless number, termed as response number in Zhao [Archive of Applied Mechanics 68 (1998) 524], has been suggested for the dynamic plastic response of beams and plates made up of rigidly perfect plastic materials subjected to dynamic loading. Many theoretical and experimental results can be reformulated into new concise forms with the response number. The concept of a new dimensionless number, response number, termed as Rn(n), is generalized in Zhao [Forschung im Ingenieurwesen 65 (1999) 107] to study the elastic, plastic, dynamic elastic as well as dynamic plastic buckling problems of columns, plates as well as shells. The response number Rn(n) is generalized to the dynamic behaviour of shells of various shapes in the present paper.

A dimensionless number, termed response number, is applied to the dynamic plastic response of plates subjected to dynamic loading. Many theoretical and experimental results presented by different researchers are reformulated into new concise forms with the response number. The advantage of the new forms is twofold: (1) they are more physically meaningful, and (2) they are independent of the choice of units, thus, they have wider range of applications.

The experimental investigation of the response of suction bucket foundation in fine sand layer under horizontal dynamic loading has been carried out. The developments of settlement and excess pore pressure of sand foundation have been mainly studied. It is shown that the sand surrounding the bucket softens or even liquefies at the first stage if the loading amplitude is over a critical value, at later stage, the bucket settles and the sand layer consolidates gradually. With the solidification of the liquefied sand layer and the settlement of the bucket, the movement of the sand layer and the bucket reach a stable state.

Abstract: Experiments to determine the horizontal static bearing capacity are carried out first. The static bearing capacity is a reference for choosing the amplitudes of dynamic load. Then a series of experiments under dynamic horizontal load are carried out in laboratory to study the influences of factors, such as the scales of bucket, the amplitude and frequency of load, the density of soils etc.. The responses of bucket foundations in calcareous sand under horizontal dynamic load are analyzed according to the experimental results. The displacements of bucket and sand layer are analyzed.

Any linearised theory of the initiation of friction-excited vibration via instability of the state of steady sliding requires information about the dynamic friction force in the form of a frequency response function for sliding friction. Recent measurements of this function for an interface consisting of a nylon pin against a glass disc are used to probe the underlying constitutive law. Results are compared to linearised predictions from the simplest ratestate model of friction, and a ratetemperature model. In both cases the observed variation with frequency is not compatible with the model predictions, although there are some significant points of similarity. The most striking result relates to variation of the normal load: any theory embodying the Coulomb relation F∝N would predict behaviour entirely at variance with the measurements, even though the steady friction force obtained during the same measurements does follow the Coulomb law. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Carbon fibre-epoxy composite square honeycombs, and the parent composite material, were tested in quasi-static compression at a strain rate of 10 -3 s -1 and in dynamic compression at strain rates of 10 3-10 4 s -1 using an instrumented Kolsky bar arrangement. Taken together, these tests provide an assessment of the potential of this composite topology for use as a lightweight sandwich core. The honeycombs had two relative densities, 0.12 and 0.24, and two material orientations, ±45° and 0/90° with respect to the prismatic, loading direction of the honeycomb. Honeycomb manufacture was by slotting, assembling and bonding together carbon fibre/epoxy woven plies of composite sheets of 2 × 2 twill weave construction. The peak value of wall stress in the honeycombs was about one third that of the parent material, for all strain rates. An elastic finite element analysis was used to trace the source of this knock-down in strength: a stress concentration exists at the root of the slots and leads to premature failure by microbuckling. Shock-wave effects were evident at impact velocities exceeding 50 ms -1 for the honeycomb of relative density 0.12. This was traced to stubbing of the buckled cell walls against the face of the Kolsky bar. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The widespread use of piled foundations in areas prone to liquefaction has led to significant research being carried out to understand their behaviour during earthquakes. A key challenge inmodelling this problemin a centrifuge is the installation procedure, and in most dynamic centrifuge experiments piles are installed before the test commences, either pushing the piles at 1g, or fixing the piles in the model and the sand poured around them. In this paper, a series of dynamic centrifuge experiments are described in which a 2 × 2 pile group is pushed into the model before the test begins and also once the centrifuge has reached the test acceleration. The paper focuses on the key differences which were observed in the pile group's response to the earthquake motion, and in particular, the very different settlement responses of the pile groups.
