Electronic information tools have become increasingly popular with channel manufacturers in their efforts to manage resellers. Although these tools have been found to increase the efficiency of communications, researchers and practitioners alike have questioned their effectiveness. To investigate how top-down electronic information affects social channel relationships we consider the use of such tools in information technology distribution channels. Using electronic communications theory and channel governance theory we hypothesize that the usefulness of the tools is a function of the type of information inherent in each tool (demand creation information or supply fulfillment information) and the particular communications characteristics of this information.

The importance of vascular risk factors in various age-related pathologies has been extensively researched. Nevertheless, the haemodynamic disturbance occurring in various ocular and systemic vascular beds to impact upon ocular function remained largely unknown. The purpose of the following studies was to explore the presence and impact of both ocular and systemic vascular dysregulation as well as biochemical vascular risk factors in healthy elderly individuals and patients with age-related macular degeneration. Furthermore, the possible role was played by circulatory oxidative stress and its relationship with endothelial dysfunction at both ocular and systemic levels has also been investigated. There were four principal sections to the present work: 1. To assess the relationship between ocular and systemic anti-oxidative defence in healthy individuals The principal findings of this work were: -It has been shown that MPOD significantly and positively related with circulatory GSH levels. 2. To investigate macro- and microcirculation and oxidative stress in early AMD patients without overt systemic disease The principal findings of this work were: -AMD patients exhibit abnormal macrocirculation compared to the controls. -Blood GSSG level was significantly higher in early AMD patients than controls. -AMD patients showed abnormal microcirculation at retinal level compared. -In early AMD patients, retinal venous RT positively correlated with blood GSSG levels. 3. To assess the relationship between ocular vascular function and circulatory markers of endothelial dysfunction and CVD risk The principal findings of this work were: -Age had a positive effect on ET-1, vWF and slope of retinal arterial constriction in otherwise healthy individuals. -Even in otherwise healthy individuals, retinal arterial vascular function showed a significant correlation with circulatory markers of endothelial dysfunction and CVD risk. 4. To assess age-related changes in ANS and vascular function, and their relationship to retinal vascular function parameters The principal findings of this work were: -Elderly individuals demonstrated abnormal circadian changes of PSNS activity compared to middle-aged group. -Elderly groups showed higher ET-1 and vWF level as well as C-IMT and AIx, and also impaired retinal vascular function compared to the middle-aged group. -In the elderly group, impaired retinal vascular function significantly correlated with the dysregulation of PSNS activity.

This essay undertakes the first critical assessment of Klaus Böldl's prose works and discusses the position his three published books hold within the context of contemporary German literature. After an introductory examination of Böldl's contribution to the literary portrayal of the peripheral, in this instance the North European/Scandinavian hemisphere, a contrastive analysis of the plots identifies recurring patterns and motifs. In the main part of the essay, the two focal characteristics of Böldl's writings are explored in depth: the narrative destruction of the threshold between natural history and civilisation, as well as the function of transcendental experiences reminiscent of epiphanies. With reference to theoretical writings by Walter Benjamin and George Steiner these literary epiphanies are interpreted as moments of transcendancy's 'profane presence'. © Springer 2005.

Programmed cell death, apoptosis, is a highly regulated process that removes damaged or unwanted cells in vivo and has significant immunological implications. Defective clearance of apoptotic cells by macrophages (professional phagocytes) is known to result in chronic inflammatory and autoimmune disease. Tissue transglutaminase 2 (TG2) is a Ca2+-dependent protein cross linking enzyme known to play an important role in a number of cell functions. Up-regulation of TG2 is thought to be involved in monocyte to macrophage differentiation and defective clearance of apoptotic cells by TG2 null mice has been described though in this context the role of TG2 is yet to be fully elucidated. Cell surface-associated TG2 is now recognized as being important in regulating cell adhesion and migration, via its association with cell surface receptors such as syndecan-4, ß1 and ß3 integrin, but its extracellular role in the clearance of apoptotic cells is still not fully explored. Our work aims to characterize the role of TG2 and its partners (e.g. syndecan-4 and ß3 integrin) in macrophage function within the framework of apoptotic cell clearance. Both THP-1 cell-derived macrophage-like cells and primary human macrophages were analyzed for the expression and function of TG2. Macrophage-apoptotic cell interaction studies in the presence of TG2 inhibitors (both cell permeable and impermeable, irreversible and active site directed) resulted in significant inhibition of interaction indicating a possible role for TG2 in apoptotic cell clearance. Macrophage cell surface TG2 and, in particular, its cell surface crosslinking activity was found to be crucial in dictating apoptotic cell clearance. Our further studies demonstrate syndecan-4 association with TG2 and imply possible cooperation of these proteins in apoptotic cell clearance. Knockdown studies of syndecan-4 reveal its importance in apoptotic cell clearance. Our current findings suggest that TG2 has a crucial but yet to be fully defined role in apoptotic cell clearance which seems to involve protein cross linking and interaction with other cell surface receptors.

Computer-Based Learning systems of one sort or another have been in existence for almost 20 years, but they have yet to achieve real credibility within Commerce, Industry or Education. A variety of reasons could be postulated for this, typically: - cost - complexity - inefficiency - inflexibility - tedium Obviously different systems deserve different levels and types of criticism, but it still remains true that Computer-Based Learning (CBL) is falling significantly short of its potential. Experience of a small, but highly successful CBL system within a large, geographically distributed industry (the National Coal Board) prompted an investigation into currently available packages, the original intention being to purchase the most suitable software and run it on existing computer hardware, alongside existing software systems. It became apparent that none of the available CBL packages were suitable, and a decision was taken to develop an in-house Computer-Assisted Instruction system according to the following criteria: - cheap to run; - easy to author course material; - easy to use; - requires no computing knowledge to use (as either an author or student) ; - efficient in the use of computer resources; - has a comprehensive range of facilities at all levels. This thesis describes the initial investigation, resultant observations and the design, development and implementation of the SCHOOL system. One of the principal characteristics c£ SCHOOL is that it uses a hierarchical database structure for the storage of course material - thereby providing inherently a great deal of the power, flexibility and efficiency originally required. Trials using the SCHOOL system on IBM 303X series equipment are also detailed, along with proposed and current development work on what is essentially an operational CBL system within a large-scale Industrial environment.

This project has been undertaken for Hamworthy Hydraulics Limited. Its objective was to design and develop a controller package for a variable displacement, hydraulic pump for use mainly on mobile earth moving machinery. A survey was undertaken of control options used in practice and from this a design specification was formulated, the successful implementation of which would give Hamworthy an advantage over its competitors. Two different modes for the controller were envisaged. One consisted of using conventional hydro-mechanics and the other was based upon a microprocessor. To meet short term customer prototype requirements the first section of work was the realisation of the hydro-mechanical system. Mathematical models were made to evaluate controller stability and hence aid their design. The final package met the requirements of the specification and a single version could operate all sizes of variable displacement pumps in the Hamworthy range. The choice of controller options and combinations totalled twenty-four. The hydro-mechanical controller was complex and it was realised that a micro-processor system would allow all options to be implemented with just one design of hardware, thus greatly simplifying production. The final section of this project was to determine whether such a design was feasible. This entailed finding cheap, reliable transducers, using mathematical models to predict electro-hydraulic interface stability, testing such interfaces and finally incorporating a micro-processor in an interactive control loop. The study revealed that such a system was technically possible but it would cost 60% more than its hydro-mechanical counterpart. It was therefore concluded that, in the short term, for the markets considered, the hydro-mechanical design was the better solution. Regarding the micro-processor system the final conclusion was that, because the relative costs of the two systems are decreasing, the electro-hydraulic controller will gradually become more attractive and therefore Hamworthy should continue with its development.

The purpose of the following studies was to explore the effect of systemic vascular and endothelial dysfunction upon the ocular circulation and functionality of the retina. There are 6 principal sections to the present work. Retinal vessel activity in smokers and non-smokers: the principal findings of this work were: chronic smoking affects retinal vessel motion at baseline and during stimulation with flickering light; chronic smoking leads to a vaso-constrictory shift in retinal arteriolar reactivity to flicker; retinal arteriolar elasticity is decreased in chronic smokers. The effect of acute smoking on retinal vessel dynamics in smokers and non-smokers: the principal finding of this work was that retinal reactivity in chronic smokers is blunted when exposed to clicker light provocation immediately after smoking one cigarette. Ocular blood flow in coronary artery disease: The principal findings of this work were: retrobulbar and retinal blood flow is preserved in CAD patients, despite a change pulse wave transmission; arterial retinal response to flickering light provocation is significantly delayed in CAD patients; retinal venular diameters are significantly dilated in CAD patients. Autonomic nervous system function and peripheral circulation in CAD: The principal findings in this work were: CAD patients demonstrate a sympathetic overdrive during a 24 period; a delay in peripheral vascular reactivity (nail-fold capillaries) as observed in patients suffering from CAD could be caused by either arteriosclerotic changes of the vascular walls or due to systemic haemodynamic changes. Visual function in CAD: The principal findings in this work were: overall visual function in CAD patients is preserved, despite a decrease in contrast sensitivity; applying a filtering technique selecting those with greater coefficient of variance which in turn represents a decrease in reliability, some patients appear to have an impaired visual function as assessed using FDT visual field evaluation. Multiple functional, structural and biochemical vascular endothelial dysfunctions in patients suffering from CAD: relationships and possible implications: The principal findings of this work were: BMI significantly correlated with vWF (a marker of endothelial function) in CAD patients. Retinal vascular reactivity showed a significant correlation with peripheral reactivity parameters in controls which lacked in the CAD group and could reflect a loss in vascular endothelial integrity; visual field parameters as assessed by frequency doubling technology were strongly related with systemic vascular elasticity (ambulatory arterial stiffness index) in controls but not CAD patients.

Apoptosis is a highly regulated process that removes damaged or unwanted cells in vivo and defective clearance of apoptotic cells by macrophages has significant immunological implications. Tissue transglutaminase 2 (TG2) is a Ca2+-dependent protein cross linking enzyme known to play an important role in cell proliferation, differentiation, carcinogenesis, programmed death, and aging. TG2 as a guanosine triphosphate (GTP)-binding or GTP- hydrolyzing protein for mediating signal transduction and as a cell cycle regulator emphasized the importance of this enzyme in aging process. The ubiquitous presence of TG2 compared to the other organ-specific TGases has attracted special attention as a cellular aging device. TG2 activity and expression are known to increase in aging humans suggesting possible involvement in several age-related processes such as decrease in vascular compliance and increased stiffening of conduit arteries, cataract formation, Alzheimer's disease and senescent epidermal keratinocytes. Our work aims to characterize the role of TG2 and its partners (e.g. syndecan-4 and ß3 integrin) in macrophage function. The incentive dilemma refers to a situation in which incentives are offered but do not work as intended. The authors suggest that, in an interorganizational context, whether a principal-provided incentive works is a function of how it is evaluated by an agent: for its contribution to the agent's bottom line (instrumental evaluation) and for the extent it is strategically aligned with the agent's direction (congruence evaluation). To further understand when incentives work, the influence of two key contextual variables-industry volatility and dependence-are examined. A field study featuring 57 semi-structured depth interviews and 386 responses from twin surveys in the information technology and brewing industries provide data for hypothesis testing. When and whether incentives work is demonstrated by certain conditions under which the agent's evaluation of an incentive has positive or negative effects on its compliance and active representation. Further, some outcomes are reversed in the high volatility condition. © 2013 Academy of Marketing Science.

Purpose: Evidence exists for an additional inhibitory accommodative control system mediated by the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). This work aims to show the relative prevalence of sympathetic inhibition in young emmetropic and myopic adults, and to evaluate the effect of sympathetic facility on accommodative and oculomotor function. Methods: Profiling of ciliary muscle innervation was carried out in 58 young adult subjects (30 emmetropes, 14 early onset myopes, 14 late onset myopes) by examining post-task open-loop accommodation responses, recorded continuously by a modified open-view infrared optometer. Measurements of amplitude of accommodation, tonic accommodation, accommodative lag at near, AC/A ratio, and heterophoria at distance and near were made to establish a profile of oculomotor function. Results: Evidence of sympathetic inhibitory facility in ciliary smooth muscle was observed in 27% of emmetropes, 21% of early-onset myopes and 29% of late-onset myopes. Twenty-six percent of all subjects demonstrated access to sympathetic facility. Closed-loop oculomotor function did not differ significantly between subjects with sympathetic facility, and those with sympathetic deficit. Conclusions: Emmetropic and myopic groups cannot be distinguished in terms of the relative proportions having access to sympathetic inhibition. Presence of sympathetic innervation does not have a significant effect on accommodative function under closed-loop viewing conditions. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The early stages of dieting to lose weight have been associated with neuro-psychological impairments. Previous work has not elucidated whether these impairments are a function solely of unsupported or supported dieting. Raised cortico-steroid levels have been implicated as a possible causal mechanism. Healthy, overweight, pre-menopausal women were randomised to one of three conditions in which they dieted either as part of a commercially available weight loss group, dieted without any group support or acted as non-dieting controls for 8 weeks. Testing occurred at baseline and at 1, 4 and 8 weeks post baseline. During each session, participants completed measures of simple reaction time, motor speed, vigilance, immediate verbal recall, visuo-spatial processing and (at Week 1 only) executive function. Cortisol levels were gathered at the beginning and 30 min into each test session, via saliva samples. Also, food intake was self-recorded prior to each session and fasting body weight and percentage body fat were measured at each session. Participants in the unsupported diet condition displayed poorer vigilance performance (p=0.001) and impaired executive planning function (p=0.013) (along with a marginally significant trend for poorer visual recall (p=0.089)) after 1 week of dieting. No such impairments were observed in the other two groups. In addition, the unsupported dieters experienced a significant rise in salivary cortisol levels after 1 week of dieting (p<0.001). Both dieting groups lost roughly the same amount of body mass (p=0.011) over the course of the 8 weeks of dieting, although only the unsupported dieters experienced a significant drop in percentage body fat over the course of dieting (p=0.016). The precise causal nature of the relationship between stress, cortisol, unsupported dieting and cognitive function is, however, uncertain and should be the focus of further research. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. The focus of our work is the verification of tight functional properties of numerical programs, such as showing that a floating-point implementation of Riemann integration computes a close approximation of the exact integral. Programmers and engineers writing such programs will benefit from verification tools that support an expressive specification language and that are highly automated. Our work provides a new method for verification of numerical software, supporting a substantially more expressive language for specifications than other publicly available automated tools. The additional expressivity in the specification language is provided by two constructs. First, the specification can feature inclusions between interval arithmetic expressions. Second, the integral operator from classical analysis can be used in the specifications, where the integration bounds can be arbitrary expressions over real variables. To support our claim of expressivity, we outline the verification of four example programs, including the integration example mentioned earlier. A key component of our method is an algorithm for proving numerical theorems. This algorithm is based on automatic polynomial approximation of non-linear real and real-interval functions defined by expressions. The PolyPaver tool is our implementation of the algorithm and its source code is publicly available. In this paper we report on experiments using PolyPaver that indicate that the additional expressivity does not come at a performance cost when comparing with other publicly available state-of-the-art provers. We also include a scalability study that explores the limits of PolyPaver in proving tight functional specifications of progressively larger randomly generated programs. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.
