Mesoporous Mobil catalytic materials of number 41 (MCM-41) silica was chemically modified using both inorganic and organic precursors and characterized using the techniques, XRD, XPS, MAS NMR, FTIR, W-Vis, and physical adsorption of nitrogen, hydrocarbons (hexane, benzene, acetone, and methanol) and water vapor. Modification using organic reagents was found to result in a significant loss in porosity and a shape change of surface properties (increased hydrophobicity and decreased acidity). With inorganic modifying reagents, the decrease in porosity was also observed while the surface properties were not significantly altered as reflected by the adsorption isotherms of organics and water vapors. Chemical modifications can greatly improve the hydrothermal stability of MCM-41 material because of the enhanced surface hydrophobicity (with organic modifiers) or increased pore wall thickness (with inorganic modifiers). Coating anatase TiO2 onto three different particle supports, activated carbon (AC), gamma -alumina (Al2O3) and silica gel (SiO2), by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) was studied. The effect of the CVD synthesis conditions on the loading rate of anatase TiO2 was investigated. It was found that introducing water vapor during CVD or adsorbing water before CVD was crucial to obtain anatase TiO2 on the surface of the particle supports. The evaporation temperature of precursor, deposition temperature in the reactor, flow rate of carrier gas, and the length of coating time were also important parameters to obtain more uniform and repeatable TiO2 coating. High inflow precursor concentration, high CVD reactor temperature and long coating time tended to cause block problem. Coating TiO2 onto small particles by CVD involved both chemical vapor deposition and particle deposition. It was believed that the latter was the reason for the block problem. In addition, the mechanism of CVD process in this study included two parts, pyrolysis and hydrolysis, and one of them was dominant in the CVD process under different synthesis route. Among the three types of materials, silica gel, with higher surface hydroxyl groups and macropore surface area, was found to be the most efficient support in terms of both anatase TiO2 coating and photocatalytic reaction. A numerical model of heat transfer in fluidized-bed coating of solid cylinders is presented. By defining suitable dimensionless parameters, the governing equations and its associated initial and boundary conditions are discretized using the method of orthogonal collocation and the resulting ordinary differential equations simultaneously solved for the dimensionless coating thickness and wall temperatures. Parametric Studies showed that the dimensionless coating thickness and wall temperature depend on the relative heat capacities of the polymer powder and object, the latent heat of fusion and the size of the cylinder. Model predictions for the coating thickness and wall temperature compare reasonably well with numerical predictions and experimental coating data in the literature and with our own coating experiments using copper cylinders immersed in nylon-11 and polyethylene powders. In this study the variations in surface reflectance properties and pigment concentrations of Antarctic moss over species, sites, microtopography and with water content were investigated. It was found that species had significantly different surface reflectance properties, particularly in the region of the red edge (approximately 700 nm), but this did not correlate strongly with pigment concentrations. Surface reflectance of moss also varied in the visible region and in the characteristics of the red edge over different sites. Reflectance parameters, such as the photochemical reflectance index (PRI) and cold hard band were useful discriminators of site, microtopographic position and water content. The PRI was correlated both with the concentrations of active xanthophyll-cycle pigments and the photosynthetic light use efficiency, F-v/F-m, measured using chlorophyll fluorescence. Water content of moss strongly influenced the amplitude and position of the red-edge as well as the PRI, and may be responsible for observed differences in reflectance properties for different species and sites. All moss showed sustained high levels of photoprotective xanthophyll pigments, especially at exposed sites, indicating moss is experiencing continual high levels of photochemical stress.

The substituted cysteine accessibility method was used to probe the surface exposure of a pore-lining threonine residue (T6') common to both the glycine receptor (GlyR) and gamma-aminobutyric acid, type A receptor (GABAAR) chloride channels. This residue lies close to the channel activation gate, the ionic selectivity filter, and the main pore blocker binding site. Despite their high amino acid sequence homologies and common role in conducting chloride ions, recent studies have suggested that the GlyRs and GABA(A)Rs have divergent open state pore structures at the 6' position. When both the human alpha1(T6'C) homomeric GlyR and the rat alpha1(T6'C)beta1(T6'C) heteromeric GABA(A)R were expressed in human embryonic kidney 293 cells, their 6' residue surface accessibilities differed significantly in the closed state. However, when a soluble cysteine-modifying compound was applied in the presence of saturating agonist concentrations, both receptors were locked into the open state. This action was not induced by oxidizing agents in either receptor. These results provide evidence for a conserved pore opening mechanism in anion-selective members of the ligand-gated ion channel family. The results also indicate that the GABA(A)R pore structure at the 6' level may vary between different expression systems.

The innate immune system of insects consists of humoral and cellular components involved in the recognition of and responses to intruding foreign micro- or macroorganisms. Several molecules have been identified so far that recognize molecular patterns present on microorganisms, such as lipopolysaccharides, peptidoglycans and lipoteichonic acid. These molecules, acting as opsonins, trigger immune responses such as phagocytosis, nodule formation, melanization and encapsulation. Here, we investigated the role of calreticulin (CRT) present on the surface of Pieris rapae hemocytes in phagocytosis. Comparative phagocytosis assays using yeast cells showed that hemocytes from different insects exhibit significant variation in their phagocytosing potential and relative CRT involvement. The assumption in analytical solutions for flow from surface and buried point sources of an average water content, (θ) over bar, behind the wetting front is examined. Some recent work has shown that this assumption fitted some field data well. Here we calculated (θ) over bar using a steady state solution based on the work by Raats [1971] and an exponential dependence of the diffusivity upon the water content. This is compared with a constant value of (θ) over bar calculated from an assumption of a hydraulic conductivity at the wetting front of 1 mm day(-1) and the water content at saturation. This comparison was made for a wide range of soils. The constant (θ) over bar generally underestimated (θ) over bar at small wetted radii and overestimated (θ) over bar at large radii. The crossover point between under and overestimation changed with both soil properties and flow rate. The largest variance occurred for coarser texture soils at low-flow rates. At high-flow rates in finer-textured soils the use of a constant (θ) over bar results in underestimation of the time for the wetting front to reach a particular radius. The value of (θ) over bar is related to the time at which the wetting front reaches a given radius. In coarse-textured soils the use of a constant value of (θ) over bar can result in an error of the time when the wetting front reaches a particular radius, as large as 80% at low-flow rates and large radii.

Surface characterization of 6H-SiC (0001) substrates in indentation and abrasive machining was carried out to investigate microfracture, residual damage, and surface roughness associated with material removal and surface generation. Brittle versus plastic deformation was studied using Vickers indention and nano-indentation. To characterize the abrasive machining response, the 6H-SiC (0001) substrates were ground using diamond wheels with grit sizes of 25, 15 and 7 mum, and then polished with diamond suspensions of 3 and 0.05 mum. It is found that in indentation, there was a scale effect for brittle versus plastic deformation in 6H-SiC substrates. Also, in grinding, the scales of fracture and surface roughness of the substrates decreased with a decrease in diamond grit size. However, in polishing, a reduction in grit size of diamond suspensions gave no significant improvement in surface roughness. Furthermore, the results showed that fracture-free 6H-SiC (0001) surfaces were generated in polishing with the existence of the residual crystal defects, which were associated with the origin of defects in single crystal growth. Different stoichiometries are observed between alpha and beta subunits of Na,K-ATPase that depend on the method employed to solubilize and purify the enzyme. It is not known whether this variability is due to loss of protein-protein association, or is a result of the replacement of essential phospholipids by detergent molecules. With the aim of understanding the effect of enzyme/surfactant ratio on both the catalytic activity and the enzyme structure, we have investigated the bulk and surface properties of the enzyme. The circular dichroism (CD) spectra, surface tension and dilatational surface elasticity results were compared with the residual ATPase activity of the Na,K-ATPase in different surfactant and protein concentrations. Na,K-ATPase in the (alpha beta)(2) form dissociated to the alpha beta form on dilution, and associated to the (alpha beta)(4) form when concentrated. These different stoichiometries have similar ATPase activities and are in equilibrium at C(12)E(8) concentrations below the CIVIC (0.053 mg mL(-1)). At detergent concentrations above the CIVIC the ATPase activity of all forms was abolished, which is concomitant with the dissociation of the a and subunits. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. The electrochemical performance of carbon fibers (CF) and boron-doped diamond electrodes grown on carbon fiber substrate (BDD/CF) was studied. CF substrates were obtained from polyacrylonitrile precursor heat treated at two different temperatures of 1000 and 2000 degrees C to produce the desirable CF carbon graphitization index. This graphitization process influenced the CF conductivity and its chemical surface, also analyzed from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. These three-dimensional CF structures allowed a high incorporation of diamond films compared to other carbon substrates such as glass carbon or HOPG. The electrochemical responses, from these four classes of electrodes, were evaluated focusing their application as electrical double-layer capacitors using cyclic voltammetry and impedance measurements. Cyclic voltammetry results revealed that the electrode formed from BDD grown on CF-2000 presented a typical capacitor behavior with the best rectangular shape, compared to those electrodes of CF or BDD/CF-1000. Furthermore, the BDD/CF-2000 electrode presented the lowest impedance, associated to its significant capacitance value of 1940 mu F/cm(2) taking into account the BDD films. This behavior was attributed to the strong dependence between diamond coating texture and the CF graphitization temperature. The largest surface area of BDD/CF-2000 was promoted by its singular film growth mechanism associated to the substrate chemical surface. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A multilayer organic film containing poly(acrylic acid) and chitosan was fabricated on a metallic support by means of the layer-by-layer technique. This film was used as a template for calcium carbonate crystallization and presents two possible binding sites where the nucleation may be initiated, either calcium ions acting as counterions of the polyelectrolyte or those trapped in the template gel network formed by the polyelectrolyte chains. Calcium carbonate formation was carried out by carbon dioxide diffusion, where CO, was generated from ammonium carbonate decomposition. The CaCO3 nanocrystals obtained, formed a dense, homogeneous, and continuous film. Vaterite and calcite CaCO3 crystalline forms were detected. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

Surface pressure (pi)-molecular area (A) curves were used to characterize the packing of pseudo-ternary mixed Langmuir monolayers of egg phosphatidylcholine (EPC), 1,2-dioleoyl-3-trimethylammonium propane (DOTAP) and L-alpha-dioleoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (DOPE). This pseudo-ternary mixture EPC/DOPE/DOTAP has been successfully employed in liposome formulations designed for DNA non-viral vectors. Pseudo-binary mixtures were also studied as a control. Miscibility behavior was inferred from pi-A curves applying the additivity rule by calculating the excess free energy of mixture (Delta G(Exc)). The interaction between the lipids was also deduced from the surface compressional modulus (C(s)(-1)). The deviation from ideality shows dependence on the lipid polar head type and monolayer composition. For lower DOPE concentrations, the forces are predominantly attractive. However, if the monolayer is DOPE rich, the DOTAP presence disturbs the PE-PE intermolecular interaction and the net interaction is then repulsive. The ternary monolayer EPC/DOPE/DOTAP presented itself in two configurations, modulated by the DOPE content, in a similar behavior to the DOPE/DOTAP monolayers. These results contribute to the understanding of the lipid interactions and packing in self-assembled systems associated with the in vitro and in vivo stability of liposomes. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The problem of the negative values of the interaction parameter in the equation of Frumkin has been analyzed with respect to the adsorption of nonionic molecules on energetically homogeneous surface. For this purpose, the adsorption states of a homologue series of ethoxylated nonionic surfactants on air/water interface have been determined using four different models and literature data (surface tension isotherms). The results obtained with the Frumkin adsorption isotherm imply repulsion between the adsorbed species (corresponding to negative values of the interaction parameter), while the classical lattice theory for energetically homogeneous surface (e.g., water/air) admits attraction alone. It appears that this serious contradiction can be overcome by assuming heterogeneity in the adsorption layer, that is, effects of partial condensation (formation of aggregates) on the surface. Such a phenomenon is suggested in the Fainerman-Lucassen-Reynders-Miller (FLM) 'Aggregation model'. Despite the limitations of the latter model (e.g., monodispersity of the aggregates), we have been able to estimate the sign and the order of magnitude of Frumkin's interaction parameter and the range of the aggregation numbers of the surface species.
