This paper analyses the boundaries of simplified wind turbine models used to represent the behavior of wind turbines in order to conduct power system stability studies. Based on experimental measurements, the response of recent simplified (also known as generic) wind turbine models that are currently being developed by the International Standard IEC 61400-27 is compared to complex detailed models elaborated by wind turbine manufacturers. This International Standard, whose Technical Committee was convened in October 2009, is focused on defining generic simulation models for both wind turbines (Part 1) and wind farms (Part 2). The results of this work provide an improved understanding of the usability of generic models for conducting power system simulations.

Due to the global crisis o f climate change many countries throughout the world are installing the renewable energy o f wind power into their electricity system. Wind energy causes complications when it is being integrated into the electricity system due its intermittent nature. Additionally winds intennittency can result in penalties being enforced due to the deregulation in the electricity market. Wind power forecasting can play a pivotal role to ease the integration o f wind energy. Wind power forecasts at 24 and 48 hours ahead of time are deemed the most crucial for determining an appropriate balance on the power system. In the electricity market wind power forecasts can also assist market participants in terms o f applying a suitable bidding strategy, unit commitment or have an impact on the value o f the spot price. For these reasons this study investigates the importance o f wind power forecasts for such players as the Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and Independent Power Producers (IPPs). Investigation in this study is also conducted into the impacts that wind power forecasts can have on the electricity market in relation to bidding strategies, spot price and unit commitment by examining various case studies. The results o f these case studies portray a clear and insightful indication o f the significance o f availing from the information available from wind power forecasts. The accuracy o f a particular wind power forecast is also explored. Data from a wind power forecast is examined in the circumstances o f both 24 and 48 hour forecasts. The accuracy o f the wind power forecasts are displayed through a variety o f statistical approaches. The results o f the investigation can assist market participants taking part in the electricity pool and also provides a platform that can be applied to any forecast when attempting to define its accuracy. This study contributes significantly to the knowledge in the area o f wind power forecasts by explaining the importance o f wind power forecasting within the energy sector. It innovativeness and uniqueness lies in determining the accuracy o f a particular wind power forecast that was previously unknown.

Fault location has been studied deeply for transmission lines due to its importance in power systems. Nowadays the problem of fault location on distribution systems is receiving special attention mainly because of the power quality regulations. In this context, this paper presents an application software developed in Matlabtrade that automatically calculates the location of a fault in a distribution power system, starting from voltages and currents measured at the line terminal and the model of the distribution power system data. The application is based on a N-ary tree structure, which is suitable to be used in this application due to the highly branched and the non- homogeneity nature of the distribution systems, and has been developed for single-phase, two-phase, two-phase-to-ground, and three-phase faults. The implemented application is tested by using fault data in a real electrical distribution power system

PURPOSE: To objectively characterize different heart tissues from functional and viability images provided by composite-strain-encoding (C-SENC) MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: C-SENC is a new MRI technique for simultaneously acquiring cardiac functional and viability images. In this work, an unsupervised multi-stage fuzzy clustering method is proposed to identify different heart tissues in the C-SENC images. The method is based on sequential application of the fuzzy c-means (FCM) and iterative self-organizing data (ISODATA) clustering algorithms. The proposed method is tested on simulated heart images and on images from nine patients with and without myocardial infarction (MI). The resulting clustered images are compared with MRI delayed-enhancement (DE) viability images for determining MI. Also, Bland-Altman analysis is conducted between the two methods. RESULTS: Normal myocardium, infarcted myocardium, and blood are correctly identified using the proposed method. The clustered images correctly identified 90 +/- 4% of the pixels defined as infarct in the DE images. In addition, 89 +/- 5% of the pixels defined as infarct in the clustered images were also defined as infarct in DE images. The Bland-Altman results show no bias between the two methods in identifying MI. CONCLUSION: The proposed technique allows for objectively identifying divergent heart tissues, which would be potentially important for clinical decision-making in patients with MI.

Underbody plows can be very useful tools in winter maintenance, especially when compacted snow or hard ice must be removed from the roadway. By the application of significant down-force, and the use of an appropriate cutting edge angle, compacted snow and ice can be removed very effectively by such plows, with much greater efficiency than any other tool under those circumstances. However, the successful operation of an underbody plow requires considerable skill. If too little down pressure is applied to the plow, then it will not cut the ice or compacted snow. However, if too much force is applied, then either the cutting edge may gouge the road surface, causing significant damage often to both the road surface and the plow, or the plow may ride up on the cutting edge so that it is no longer controllable by the operator. Spinning of the truck in such situations is easily accomplished. Further, excessive down force will result in rapid wear of the cutting edge. Given this need for a high level of operator skill, the operation of an underbody plow is a candidate for automation. In order to successfully automate the operation of an underbody plow, a control system must be developed that follows a set of rules that represent appropriate operation of such a plow. These rules have been developed, based upon earlier work in which operational underbody plows were instrumented to determine the loading upon them (both vertical and horizontal) and the angle at which the blade was operating.These rules have been successfully coded into two different computer programs, both using the MatLab® software. In the first program, various load and angle inputs are analyzed to determine when, whether, and how they violate the rules of operation. This program is essentially deterministic in nature. In the second program, the Simulink® package in the MatLab® software system was used to implement these rules using fuzzy logic. Fuzzy logic essentially replaces a fixed and constant rule with one that varies in such a way as to improve operational control. The development of the fuzzy logic in this simulation was achieved simply by using appropriate routines in the computer software, rather than being developed directly. The results of the computer testing and simulation indicate that a fully automated, computer controlled underbody plow is indeed possible. The issue of whether the next steps toward full automation should be taken (and by whom) has also been considered, and the possibility of some sort of joint venture between a Department of Transportation and a vendor has been suggested.

In this article, the objective is to demonstrate the effects of different decision styles on strategic decisions and likewise, on an organization. The technique that was presented in the study is based on the transformation of linguistic variables to numerical value intervals. In this model, the study benefits from fuzzy logic methodology and fuzzy numbers. This fuzzy methodology approach allows us to examine the relations between decision making styles and strategic management processes when there is uncertainty. The purpose is to provide results to companies that may help them to exercise the most appropriate decision making style for its different strategic management processes. The study is leaving more research topics for further studies that may be applied to other decision making areas within the strategic management process.

The research of condition monitoring of electric motors has been wide for several decades. The research and development at universities and in industry has provided means for the predictive condition monitoring. Many different devices and systems are developed and are widely used in industry, transportation and in civil engineering. In addition, many methods are developed and reported in scientific arenas in order to improve existing methods for the automatic analysis of faults. The methods, however, are not widely used as a part of condition monitoring systems. The main reasons are, firstly, that many methods are presented in scientific papers but their performance in different conditions is not evaluated, secondly, the methods include parameters that are so case specific that the implementation of a systemusing such methods would be far from straightforward. In this thesis, some of these methods are evaluated theoretically and tested with simulations and with a drive in a laboratory. A new automatic analysis method for the bearing fault detection is introduced. In the first part of this work the generation of the bearing fault originating signal is explained and its influence into the stator current is concerned with qualitative and quantitative estimation. The verification of the feasibility of the stator current measurement as a bearing fault indicatoris experimentally tested with the running 15 kW induction motor. The second part of this work concentrates on the bearing fault analysis using the vibration measurement signal. The performance of the micromachined silicon accelerometer chip in conjunction with the envelope spectrum analysis of the cyclic bearing faultis experimentally tested. Furthermore, different methods for the creation of feature extractors for the bearing fault classification are researched and an automatic fault classifier using multivariate statistical discrimination and fuzzy logic is introduced. It is often important that the on-line condition monitoring system is integrated with the industrial communications infrastructure. Two types of a sensor solutions are tested in the thesis: the first one is a sensor withcalculation capacity for example for the production of the envelope spectra; the other one can collect the measurement data in memory and another device can read the data via field bus. The data communications requirements highly depend onthe type of the sensor solution selected. If the data is already analysed in the sensor the data communications are needed only for the results but in the other case, all measurement data need to be transferred. The complexity of the classification method can be great if the data is analysed at the management level computer, but if the analysis is made in sensor itself, the analyses must be simple due to the restricted calculation and memory capacity.

Focus of this thesisis made on development of electricity sector of Russian North-West. The objective was to determine the most likely scenarios for development of the most critical (western) part of Interregional Power System of North-West, from where the most part of Russian electricity exports to the countries of European Union take place. For this purpose all the involved sides were analyzed: generation, transmission system and electricity consumption in different regions of Russian North-West. The analysis was performed through investigation of existing generation andtransmission capacities and plans for their development to be performed by the generation and transmission companies operating in the region. Principles of Russian electricity sector restructuring and electricity market design are also discussed as well as factors that may influence on future electricity price in the region.

In the last decade defeasible argumentation frameworks have evolved to become a sound setting to formalize commonsense, qualitative reasoning. The logic programming paradigm has shown to be particularly useful for developing different argument-based frameworks on the basis of different variants of logic programming which incorporate defeasible rules. Most of such frameworks, however, are unable to deal with explicit uncertainty, nor with vague knowledge, as defeasibility is directly encoded in the object language. This paper presents Possibilistic Logic Programming (P-DeLP), a new logic programming language which combines features from argumentation theory and logic programming, incorporating as well the treatment of possibilistic uncertainty. Such features are formalized on the basis of PGL, a possibilistic logic based on G¨odel fuzzy logic. One of the applications of P-DeLP is providing an intelligent agent with non-monotonic, argumentative inference capabilities. In this paper we also provide a better understanding of such capabilities by defining two non-monotonic operators which model the expansion of a given program P by adding new weighed facts associated with argument conclusions and warranted literals, respectively. Diplomityö käsittelee kiinteistön palautetiedon analysointia. Tässä diplomityössä palautetiedolla tarkoitetaan kiinteistön talotekniikkaan liittyviä teknisiä ja inhimillisiä tietoja, joiden perusteella rakennuksen ja sen tekniikan toimivuudesta voidaan tehdä päätelmiä. Tiedot kerätään järjestelmistä mittauspisteiden kautta etävalvomoon, josta niitä voidaan tarkastella ja edelleen analysoida. Valvomosta saatavan tiedon rinnalle pyritään suunnitteluvaiheessa kokoamaan valvottavasta kohteesta laskennallisia energiankulutusmalleja. Myös kiinteistön asukkaat, rakennuksen ominaisuudet ja ympäristö muodostavat osan palautetiedosta. Kiinteistön palautetieto voidaankin jakaa tekniseen ja inhimilliseen tietoon, ja edelleen analysoinnin kannalta staattiseen tai dynaamiseen tietoon. Tässä diplomityössä selvitettiin palautetiedon keruuta etävalvomolla yhdistämällä tähän rakentamisen laadunvalvonnan työkaluja ja sumeaa logiikkaa. Työn käytännön osio koostuu kiinteistön ja siihen yhdistetyn etävalvomon välillä kulkevan tiedon käsittelystä, mittauspisteiden määrittämisestä ja tietojen analysoinnista. Työssä esitellään kolme esimerkkikohdetta Helsingin seudulta. Työssä laadittiin arviointimalli, joka sisältää kaiken kiinteistön palautetietoon liittyvän aineiston ja sen analysointitavat, sekä erityisesti uutena asiana myös sumeaa logiikkaa. Tiedon analysointi etenee oletusarvojen muodostamisesta, simuloinnin laatimisesta ja sen vertaamisesta todellisiin tietoihin ja edelleen näistä tehtäviin päätelmiin. Tavanomaisten teknisten tietojen lisäksi sumean logiikan avulla tuotiin esille poikkeamia selittäviä tekijöitä mm. kiinteistön asukkaiden ominaisuuksista.

Polttoaine asettaa puitteet kattilasuunnittelulle. Kiertoleijukattilakonseptin valinta kytkeytyy kiinteästi mitoitusarvoihin ja polttoaineen ominaisuuksiin. Asiakkaan vaatimuk-set kattilalle asettavat lähtökohdan kattilasuunnittelulle. Suorituskyky, kustannukset ja luotettavuus ovat asiakaslähtöisiä tekijöitä, joiden painotukset vaikuttavat kattilakonseptin valintaan. Korkeat lämpötilat tulistimien alueella tekevät tulistinjärjestelystä vaikean ja määräävän osan kattilakonseptin valintaa. Konvektiotulistimien altistuminen kuumille savukaasuille tekee niistä herkkiä likaantumiselle ja korroosiolle. Mitoitusarvojen ja tulistimien rakenteen oikeanlaisella valinnalla voidaan näitä polttoaineperäisiä ongelmia ehkäistä. Lisäksi kiertoleijukattiloissa käytetyt tulipesän ulkopuoliset tulistimet soveltuvat konvektiotulistimia korkeammille lämpötiloille huonolaatuisillakin polttoaineilla. Tässä työssä rakennettu asiantuntijajärjestelmä valitsee alustavan kattilakonseptin mitoitusta varten käyttäjän antamien vähäisten lähtötietojen pohjalta.

Kuvien laatu on tutkituimpia ja käytetyimpiä aiheita. Tässä työssä tarkastellaan värin laatu ja spektrikuvia. Työssä annetaan yleiskuva olemassa olevista pakattujen ja erillisten kuvien laadunarviointimenetelmistä painottaen näiden menetelmien soveltaminen spektrikuviin. Tässä työssä esitellään spektriväriulkomuotomalli värikuvien laadunarvioinnille. Malli sovelletaan spektrikuvista jäljennettyihin värikuviin. Malli pohjautuu sekä tilastolliseen spektrikuvamalliin, joka muodostaa yhteyden spektrikuvien ja valokuvien parametrien välille, että kuvan yleiseen ulkomuotoon. Värikuvien tilastollisten spektriparametrien ja fyysisten parametrien välinen yhteys on varmennettu tietokone-pohjaisella kuvamallinnuksella. Mallin ominaisuuksien pohjalta on kehitetty koekäyttöön tarkoitettu menetelmä värikuvien laadunarvioinnille. On kehitetty asiantuntija-pohjainen kyselymenetelmä ja sumea päättelyjärjestelmä värikuvien laadunarvioinnille. Tutkimus osoittaa, että spektri-väri –yhteys ja sumea päättelyjärjestelmä soveltuvat tehokkaasti värikuvien laadunarviointiin.
