Nowadays, the development of the photovoltaic (PV) technology is consolidated as a source of renewable energy. The research in the topic of maximum improvement on the energy efficiency of the PV plants is today a major challenge. The main requirement for this purpose is to know the performance of each of the PV modules that integrate the PV field in real time. In this respect, a PLC communications based Smart Monitoring and Communications Module, which is able to monitor at PV level their operating parameters, has been developed at the University of Malaga. With this device you can check if any of the panels is suffering any type of overriding performance, due to a malfunction or partial shadowing of its surface. Since these fluctuations in electricity production from a single panel affect the overall sum of all panels that conform a string, it is necessary to isolate the problem and modify the routes of energy through alternative paths in case of PV panels array configuration.

Building's construction activities, operation and demolition are increasingly recognised as a major source of environmental impact. One strategy for reducing such impacts is most widely known by the term Building Environmental Assessment (BEA). The research is an attempt to develop a new BEA scheme for residential buildings in Brunei which focussing on identifying BEA indicators that best suit for Brunei environment, social and economy. Studies show that Brunei residential sector needs urgent attention to transform its current consumption rate in more sustainable way. Recent launch of Brunei Green Building Council, mandatory energy efficiency guidelines and declaration of ambitious energy intensity reduction target, a new BEA scheme will help contribute sustainability target in residential sector. However the issues of developing a new BEA schemes using existing methods may face constraints in their effectiveness. In this regard, a consensus-forming technique-Delphi method-helps improve greater communication and gain consensus from experts in the construction industry through series of questionnaires. As a result, the final framework is produced comprises of 7 key categories and 37 applicable criteria that achieved high degree of consensus and importance.

The wave energy industry is entering a new phase of pre-commercial and commercial deployments of full-scale devices, so better understanding of seaway variability is critical to the successful operation of devices. The response of Wave Energy Converters to incident waves govern their operational performance and for many devices, this is highly dependent on spectral shape due to their resonant properties. Various methods of wave measurement are presented, along with analysis techniques and empirical models. Resource assessments, device performance predictions and monitoring of operational devices will often be based on summary statistics and assume a standard spectral shape such as Pierson-Moskowitz or JONSWAP. Furthermore, these are typically derived from the closest available wave data, frequently separated from the site on scales in the order of 1km. Therefore, variability of seaways from standard spectral shapes and spatial inconsistency between the measurement point and the device site will cause inaccuracies in the performance assessment. This thesis categorises time and frequency domain analysis techniques that can be used to identify changes in a sea state from record to record. Device specific issues such as dimensional scaling of sea states and power output are discussed along with potential differences that arise in estimated and actual output power of a WEC due to spectral shape variation. This is investigated using measured data from various phases of device development.

Accounting for around 40% of the total final energy consumption, the building stock is an important area of focus on the way to reaching the energy goals set for the European Union. The relatively small share of new buildings makes renovation of existing buildings possibly the most feasible way of improving the overall energy performance of the building stock. This of course involves improvements on the climate shell, for example by additional insulation or change of window glazing, but also installation of new heating systems, to increase the energy efficiency and to fit the new heat load after renovation. In the choice of systems for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), it is important to consider their performance for space heating as well as for domestic hot water (DHW), especially for a renovated house where the DHW share of the total heating consumption is larger. The present study treats the retrofitting of a generic single family house, which was defined as a reference building in a European energy renovation project. Three HVAC retrofitting options were compared from a techno-economic point of view: A) Air-to-water heat pump (AWHP) and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), B) Exhaust air heat pump (EAHP) with low-temperature ventilation radiators, and C) Gas boiler and ventilation with MVHR. The systems were simulated for houses with two levels of heating demand and four different locations: Stockholm, Gdansk, Stuttgart and London. They were then evaluated by means of life cycle cost (LCC) and primary energy consumption. Dynamic simulations were done in TRNSYS 17. In most cases, system C with gas boiler and MVHR was found to be the cheapest retrofitting option from a life cycle perspective. The advantage over the heat pump systems was particularly clear for a house in Germany, due to the large discrepancy between national prices of natural gas and electricity. In Sweden, where the price difference is much smaller, the heat pump systems had almost as low or even lower life cycle costs than the gas boiler system. Considering the limited availability of natural gas in Sweden, systems A and B would be the better options. From a primary energy point of view system A was the best option throughout, while system B often had the highest primary energy consumption. The limited capacity of the EAHP forced it to use more auxiliary heating than the other systems did, which lowered its COP. The AWHP managed the DHW load better due to a higher capacity, but had a lower COP than the EAHP in space heating mode. Systems A and C were notably favoured by the air heat recovery, which significantly reduced the heating demand. It was also seen that the DHW share of the total heating consumption was, as expected, larger for the house with the lower space heating demand. This confirms the supposition that it is important to include DHW in the study of HVAC systems for retrofitting.

This paper is about a PhD thesis and includes the study and analysis of the performance of an onshore wind energy conversion system. First, mathematical models of a variable speed wind turbine with pitch control are studied, followed by the study of different controller types such as integer-order controllers, fractional-order controllers, fuzzy logic controllers, adaptive controllers and predictive controllers and the study of a supervisor based on finite state machines is also studied. The controllers are included in the lower level of a hierarchical structure composed by two levels whose objective is to control the electric output power around the rated power. The supervisor included at the higher level is based on finite state machines whose objective is to analyze the operational states according to the wind speed. The studied mathematical models are integrated into computer simulations for the wind energy conversion system and the obtained numerical results allow for the performance assessment of the system connected to the electric grid. The wind energy conversion system is composed by a variable speed wind turbine, a mechanical transmission system described by a two mass drive train, a gearbox, a doubly fed induction generator rotor and by a two level converter.

The scope of this dissertation is to study the transport phenomena of small molecules in polymers and membranes for gas separation applications, with particular attention to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. This work seeks to contribute to the development of new competitive selective materials through the characterization of novel organic polymers such as CANALs and ROMPs, as well as through the combination of selective materials obtaining mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), to make membrane technologies competitive with the traditional ones. Kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of the transport properties were investigated in ideal and non-ideal scenarios, such as mixed-gas experiments. The information we gathered contributed to the development of the fundamental understanding related to phenomenon like CO2-induced plasticization and physical aging. Among the most significant results, ZIF-8/PPO MMMs provided materials whose permeability and selectivity were higher than those of the pure materials for He/CO2 separation. The CANALs featured norbornyl benzocyclobutene backbone and thereby introduced a third typology of ladder polymers in the gas separation field, expanding the structural diversity of microporous materials. CANALs have a completely hydrocarbon-based and non-polar rigid backbone, which makes them an ideal model system to investigate structure-property correlations. ROMPs were synthesized by means of the ring opening metathesis living polymerization, which allowed the formation of bottlebrush polymers. CF3-ROMP reveled to be ultrapermeable to CO2, with unprecedented plasticization resistance properties. Mixed-gas experiments in glassy polymer showed that solubility-selectivity controls the separation efficiency of materials in multicomponent conditions. Finally, it was determined that plasticization pressure in not an intrinsic property of a material and does not represent a state of the system, but rather comes from the contribution of solubility coefficient and diffusivity coefficient in the framework of the solution-diffusion model.

This study evaluated two different support materials (ground tire and polyethylene terephthalate [PET]) for biohydrogen production in an anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (AFBR) treating synthetic wastewater containing glucose (4000 mg L(-1)). The AFBR, which contained either ground tire (R1) or PET (R2) as support materials, were inoculated with thermally pretreated anaerobic sludge and operated at a temperature of 30 degrees C. The AFBR were operated with a range of hydraulic retention times (HRT) between 1 and 8 h. The reactor R1 operating with a HRT of 2 h showed better performance than reactor R2, reaching a maximum hydrogen yield of 2.25 mol H(2) mol(-1) glucose with 1.3 mg of biomass (as the total volatile solids) attached to each gram of ground tire. Subsequent 16S rRNA gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of particle samples revealed that reactor R1 favored the presence of hydrogen-producing bacteria such as Clostridium, Bacillus, and Enterobacter. The effect of a lipase-rich fungal enzymatic preparation, produced by a Penicillium sp. during solid-state fermentation, was evaluated in an anaerobic digester treating dairy wastewater with 1200 mg of oil and grease/L The oil and grease hydrolysis step was carried out with 0.1% (w/v) of solid enzymatic preparation at 30 degrees C for 24 h, and resulted in a final free acid concentration eight times higher than the initial value. The digester operated in sequential batches of 48 h at 30 degrees C for 245 days, and had high chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies (around 90%) when fed with pre-hydrolyzed wastewater. However, when the pre-hydrolysis step was removed, the anaerobic digester performed poorly (with an average COD removal of 32%), as the oil and grease accumulated in the biomass and effluent oil and grease concentration increased throughout the operational period. PCR-DGGE analysis of the Bacteria and Archaea domains revealed remarkable differences in the microbial profiles in trials conducted with and without the pre-hydrolysis step, indicating that differences observed in overall parameters were intrinsically related to the microbial diversity of the anaerobic sludge. The performance assessment as to water consumption in WC cisterns has contributed to the development of flushing system technologies, which allow smaller flushing volumes. The purpose of this work is to assess the performance of the the low water consumption requirement of WC cisterns with dual flushing system (6/3L), when compared to 6L flushing volume WC cisterns in multifamily buildings. The research methodology consisted of a case study in a multifamily residential building with submetering system, by monitoring the total water consumption and the two flushing systems using water meters installed in WC cisterns. By means of a mathematical model, a comparison of the design flowrate in the main branch was carried out considering the two types of WC cisterns. The results indicated that the water consumption in the 6L WC cistern was 20% in relation to the total domestic consumption, whereas the water consumption observed in the dual-flush WC cistern (6/3L) was 16%. The dual flushing system (6/3L) presented about 18% consumption reduction impact as compared to the 6 L system. The design flowrate values in the main branch, obtained by the mathematical model, were 0.35 L/s for systems with 6 L WC cistern and 0.34 L/s with dual-flush WC cistern (6/3 L), that is, a reduction of similar to 3%. Practical application: The knowledge of the performance in field of dual-flush WC cistern contributes to industry to improve this system and to users to aid their choice of technologies aimed at water conservation, and so assisting to the development of sustainable buildings.

Background/Objectives: We applied three dietary assessment methods and aimed at obtaining a set of physical, social and psychological variables that can discriminate those individuals who did not underreport (`never under-reporters`), those who underreported in one dietary assessment method (`occasional under-reporters`) and those who underreported in two or three dietary assessment methods (`frequent under-reporters`). Participants/Methods: Sixty-five women aged 18-57 years were recruited for this study. Total energy expenditure was determined by doubly labelled water, and energy intake was estimated by three 24-h diet recalls, 3-day food records and a food frequency questionnaire. A multiple discriminant analysis was used to identify which of those variables better discriminated the three groups: body mass index (BMI), income, education, social desirability, nutritional knowledge, dietary restraint, physical activity practice, body dissatisfaction and binge-eating symptoms. Results: Twenty-three participants were `never under-reporters`. Twenty-four participants were `occasional under-reporters` and 18 were `frequent under-reporters`. Four variables entered the discriminant model: income, BMI, social desirability and body dissatisfaction. According to potency indices, income contributed the most to the total discriminant power, followed in decreasing order by social desirability score, BMI and body dissatisfaction. Income, social desirability and BMI were the characteristics that mainly separated the `never under-reporters` from the under-reporters (occasional or frequent). Body dissatisfaction better discriminated the `occasional under-reporters` from the `frequent under-reporters`. Conclusions: `Frequent under-reporters` have a greater BMI, social desirability score, body dissatisfaction score and lower income. These four variables seemed to be able to discriminate individuals who are more prone to systematic under reporting. Passive techniques as an alternative to artificial cooling can bring important energy, environmental, financial, operational and qualitative benefits. However, regions such as the wet tropics can reach high levels of thermal stress in which passive means alone are unable to provide appropriate thermal comfort standards for some parts of the year. Despite a great accumulation of empirical information on the passive performance of houses for either free-running or conditioned modes, very little work has been done on the thermal performance of buildings that can operate with a mixed-running strategy in warm-humid climates. Buildings with such design features are able to balance the needs for comfort, privacy, and energy efficiency during different periods of the year. As free-running and conditioned modes are believed by many to be 'opposite' approaches, and have been presented as separate strategies, this paper demonstrates that not all parameters are directly opposite and a possible dual-mode integrated operation can be used for warm-humid locations for maximum comfort and minimum energy requirements. For this purpose, simulation runs using ESP-R (University of Strathclyde, ESRU, UK) were based on the climate data of Darwin (Australia) and on the ventilation styles of the house: free running and conditioned. Design features applicable to both, i.e. for a dual mode operation could be identified and the differences between conditioned and free running were demonstrated and proved not to be totally conflicting and therefore suitable for a dual mode operation. Different daily usage profiles (five use patterns were defined), and zoning of sleeping and living areas are presented. The dual mode use patterns compared to the base case house, for all the user possibilities, had improved performances of 17-52%, when compared to the free-running mode and 66-98% when compared to the conditioned mode. Simulation runs using other warm-humid climates (Miami, USA; Sao Luis, Brazil; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) were also conducted and compared to the results found for Darwin. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. O presente trabalho incide sobre a análise da eficiência energética dos elevadores. Para se poder entender esta questão, são apresentadas diversas informações que permitem conhecer os factores associados aos consumos de energia activa, procurando-se perceber qual o rendimento destes equipamentos. Inicialmente são analisados os diversos componentes, que fazem parte de um elevador e os locais em que esses componentes são instalados. Abordam-se as diferentes soluções de accionamento, os diversos tipos de utilização e as diferentes tecnologias que podem ser aplicadas. O estudo dos consumos de energia eléctrica dos elevadores, foi efectuado com base na metodologia desenvolvida pelo grupo E4, do programa Utilização Eficiente da Energia, da Comunidade Europeia, cujo suporte foi o DRAFT ISSO/DIS 25745 - 1 Energy Performance of Lifts and Escalators - Part 1: Energy Measurement and Conformance. Os consumos de energia eléctrica serão caracterizados com os elevadores a serem monitorizados individualmente e sem carga na cabina. A apresentação de resultados obtidos terá em linha de conta: a energia eléctrica consumida com o equipamento em modo de funcionamento, ou seja, com este a realizar ciclos completos, e a potência eléctrica consumida com a instalação em modo de standby, ou seja em não operação. No presente trabalho, são divulgados estudos do grupo E4, em que foram monitorizados elevadores em quatro países da Europa: Portugal, Alemanha, Itália e Polónia. Estes estudos permitem estimar os consumos anuais de energia eléctrica, a nível de funcionamento e a nível de standby e estimar o consumo total, seguindo como base a metodologia anteriormente referida. Para se caracterizar o parque Europeu de elevadores, o grupo E4 recorreu à ELA, Associação Europeia de Elevadores, tendo assim sido possível estimar o consumo anual numa Europa a 27, acrescido do parque da Suíça e da Noruega. Pretende-se com isso poder estimar o potencial de redução no consumo energético no parque analisado, com a aplicação das Melhores Tecnologias Disponíveis (MTD) e com a aplicação de tecnologias que ainda estão em fase de desenvolvimento. (MTND). Paralelamente o autor irá apresentar as monitorizações que efectuou a três elevadores, para os quais procurou validar as leituras efectuadas, comparando os consumos obtidos, com os consumos registados pelas monitorizações do grupo E4 e respectivas estimativas de consumos anuais de energia. As monitorizações do autor, serão utilizadas na catalogação desses três equipamentos a nível de classes de eficiência energética, tendo por base a VDI 4707/Part 1 - Lifts - Energy Efficiency - VDI manual Building Services - Volume 5: Transportation Systems. Procura-se, também, criar um método de apoio na tomada de decisão nas diversas fases de um ciclo do elevador, nomeadamente: desde a especificação, a selecção do sistema de accionamento, a selecção dos sistemas auxiliares, a instalação e a operação do elevador, com vista à melhoria da eficiência energética, e á instalação futura ou à modernização dos equipamentos existentes. Abordam-se as barreiras existentes que inibem a mudança no sector de elevação, para a implementação das MTD no parque de elevadores existente ou no desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias que possibilitem a melhoria da eficiência energética, MTND. Por ultimo, aborda-se de forma simples a temática da supervisão técnica nos elevadores, através da monitorização e supervisão dos diversos componentes, com vista à optimização da gestão da manutenção e procurando interligar esta gestão à melhoria da eficiência energética. Consegue-se concluir que apenas com a aplicação das MTD, podem ser obtidos ganhos de eficiência energética, e também que este tema não tem tido a importância que merece, pois, na análise da eficiência energética de um edifício, a eficiência dos elevadores não é tida em consideração. A ausência de legislação específica, que torne a análise da eficiência energética dos elevadores obrigatória, será um dos problemas referidos. Reforça-se que, a potencialidade de poupança energética na Europa não deve ser desprezada.

O sector dos edifícios é responsável por uma percentagem significativa dos consumos de energia primária e de energia eléctrica em Portugal, associada principalmente ao conforto térmico dos seus ocupantes. A União Europeia pretende uma redução de 20%, até 2020, dos consumos de energia e consequentes emissões de CO2 através da melhoria da eficiência energética dos edifícios públicos e residenciais. Em Portugal, o Plano Nacional para a Eficiência Energética (PNAEE) tem por objectivo obter uma poupança anual de energia de pelo menos 1% até ao ano de 2016, tomando como base a média de consumos de energia final, registados entre 2001 e 2005. Neste contexto, os edifícios anteriores a 1990 (primeira versão do RCCTE) podem apresentar um potencial significativo de melhoria da sua eficiência energética com base na sua reabilitação. Os edifícios “Gaioleiros” (1880 – 1930) constituindo uma parte importante do património histórico da cidade de Lisboa, para os quais a informação sobre o seu desempenho térmico é limitada, considerou-se pertinente efectuar um estudo destinado à sua caracterização experimental e numérica, face à especificidade do comportamento térmico das suas paredes caracterizadas pela elevada espessura. No presente trabalho, apresenta-se a metodologia e os resultados experimentais da medição da resistência térmica das paredes e da medição das necessidades térmicas de aquecimento da habitação. Estes resultados experimentais foram utilizados na validação do modelo de simulação térmica da habitação, que posteriormente serviu para avaliar as suas necessidades térmicas de aquecimento (Nic) e de arrefecimento (Nvc), identificar oportunidades de melhoria e avaliar o respectivo potencial de reabilitação. Neste trabalho, como contributos para uma reabilitação sustentável, apresentam-se avaliações de oportunidades de melhoria com base em estratégias de reforço do isolamento térmico. Dos resultados obtidos concluiu-se que melhorando o isolamento térmico das paredes e vãos envidraçados é possível baixar consideravelmente os consumos de energia associados à habitação, cumprindo assim as exigências estabelecidas no RCCTE ao nível dos requisitos de qualidade térmica da envolvente e consumos energéticos para edifícios novos e grandes reabilitações.
