A contribuição da música no campo das ciências humanas vem sendo valorizado pelas ciências da saúde nas últimas décadas, favorecendo relações entre a Fonoaudiologia e a Musicoterapia. A avaliação da percepção musical busca compreender princípios básicos como a discriminação de timbres, melodias, ritmos, intensidade, altura, duração das notas, densidade, entre outros, além de conhecimentos inerentes em relação a audição, bem como as experiências musicais no decorrer da vida. O objetivo deste estudo foi elaborar um teste informatizado de avaliação do reconhecimento de melodias tradicionais brasileiras e verificar o desempenho de crianças com audição normal neste instrumento. Foi realizada a elaboração de um teste, denominado Avaliação do Reconhecimento de Melodias Tradicionais em Crianças normo-ouvintes (ARMTC), em formato de website, composto por 15 melodias tradicionais da cultura brasileira, gravadas com timbre sintetizado de piano, padronizadas com andamentos variáveis, intensidades similares, tonalidade de acordo com a partitura utilizada, reprodução de 12 segundos cada melodia e pausas de quatro segundos entre cada melodia. A casuística foi composta por 155 crianças, com faixa etária entre oito e 11 anos, de ambos os sexos, com limiares auditivos nas frequências de 500 Hz a 4000 Hz dentro dos padrões de normalidade e curva timpanométrica tipo A. Todas as crianças foram submetidas à triagem audiológica (frequências de 500 Hz, 1 KHz, 2 KHz e 4 KHz), Timpanometria e ao ARMTC. O ARMTC foi aplicado em campo livre com intensidade de 65 dBNA, com caixa de som posicionada a 0o azimute, à uma distância de um metro do participante que se manteve sentado. As crianças foram instruídas a clicar na tela do notebook no ícone correspondente ao nome e ilustração da melodia a qual ouviram e prosseguir dessa forma até o término das 15 melodias apresentadas. Na maioria das melodias selecionadas não houve diferença significante entre número de erros/acertos e tempo de reação quando estas variáveis foram correlacionadas ao sexo, idade e local em que o teste foi aplicado. As melodias mais reconhecidas foram: Cai, cai balão, Boi da cara preta, que teve igual score a Caranguejo, Escravos de Jó, O cravo, Parabéns a você e Marcha soldado, as quais obtiveram reconhecimento superior à 70% de acertos e a melodia com menor reconhecimento foi Capelinha de melão.

El objetivo fundamental de este artículo es analizar la relación entre las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC) y los adolescentes españoles. Concretamente, se estudia, a través de metodología cualitativa, los usos que hacen los adolescentes de los dispositivos tecnológicos, así como el acceso a los mismos. Por otra parte, también se analizan las finalidades por las cuales utilizan las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación, destacando su íntima relación con la comunicación entre iguales y el entretenimiento, mientras se observa una infrautilización de las tecnologías para el proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje.

Multi-party voice-over-IP (MVoIP) services provide economical and convenient group communication mechanisms for many emerging applications such as distance collaboration systems, on-line meetings and Internet gaming. In this paper, we present a light peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol to provide MVoIP services on small platforms like mobile phones and PDAs. Unlike other proposals, our solution is fully distributed and self-organizing without requiring specialized servers or IP multicast support.

Las nuevas tecnologías ya no son un tema novedoso para la comunidad científica. La trascendencia del fenómeno ha generado una importante labor investigadora, centrada, fundamentalmente, en el estudio cuantitativo de su utilización. Sin embargo, y a pesar de los estudios realizados, todavía existen importantes lagunas de conocimiento. En esta nota abordamos lo que consideramos es una de tales lagunas: el análisis cualitativo de las relaciones que los jóvenes establecen con las nuevas tecnologías. Así, se presentan algunos de los principales resultados de una investigación sobre la influencia de las nuevas tecnologías en la vida cotidiana de los jóvenes; un estudio cuyo objetivo era analizar, no únicamente el grado de disponibilidad y uso de determinadas tecnologías (sobre todo ordenadores, Internet, telefonía móvil y videojuegos), sino, fundamentalmente, cómo éstas se incorporan a la vida cotidiana de los jóvenes y cómo percibe este colectivo su relación con ellas. Nos interesan, por tanto, tanto los posibles cambios en la forma de estudiar, de cubrir el tiempo de ocio o de relacionarse con familiares y amigos, como la manera en que los protagonistas explican e interpretan tales cambios.

This dissertation includes two studies. Study 1 is a qualitative case study that describes enactment of the main components of a high fidelity Full-Day Early Learning Kindergarten (FDELK) classroom, specifically play-based learning and teacher-ECE collaboration. Study 2 is a quantitative analysis that investigates how effectively the FDELK program promotes school readiness skills, namely self-regulation, literacy, and numeracy, in Kindergarteners. To describe the main components of an FDELK classroom in Study 1, a sub-sample of four high fidelity case study schools were selected from a larger case study sample. Interview data from these schools’ administrators, educators, parents, and community stakeholders were used to describe how the main components of the FDELK program enabled educators to meet the individual needs of students and promote students’ SR development. In Study 2, hierarchical regression analyses of 32,207 students’ self-regulation, literacy, and numeracy outcomes using 2012 Ontario Early Development Instrument (EDI) data revealed essentially no benefit for students participating in the FDELK program when compared to peers in Half-Day or Alternate-Day Kindergarten programs. Being older and female predicted more positive SR and literacy outcomes. Age and gender accounted for limited variance in numeracy outcomes. Results from both studies suggest that the Ontario Ministry of Education should take steps to improve the quality of the FDELK program by incorporating evidence-based guidelines and goals for play, reducing Kindergarten class sizes to more effectively scaffold learning, and revising curriculum expectations to include a greater focus on SR, literacy, and numeracy skills.

Carbon-isotope stratigraphy has proven to be a powerful tool in the global correlation of Cretaceous successions. Here we present new, high-resolution carbon-isotope records for the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) of the Maastrichtian stage at Tercis les Bains (France), the Bottaccione and Contessa sections at Gubbio (Italy), and the coastal sections at Norfolk (UK) to provide a global d13C correlation between shelf-sea and oceanic sites. The new d13C records are correlated with d13C-stratigraphies of the boreal chalk sea (Trunch borehole, Norfolk, UK, Lägerdorf-Kronsmoor-Hemmoor section, northern Germany, Stevns-1 core, Denmark), the tropical Pacific (ODP-Hole 1210B, Shatsky Rise) and the South Atlantic and Southern Ocean (DSDP Hole 525A, ODP Hole 690C) by using an assembled Gubbio d13C record as a reference curve. The global correlation allows the identification of significant high-frequency d13C variations that occur superimposed on prominent Campanian-Maastrichtian events, namely the Late Campanian Event (LCE), the Campanian-Maastrichtian Boundary Event (CMBE), the mid-Maastrichtian Event (MME), and the Cretaceous-Paleogene transition (KPgE). The carbon-isotope events are correlated with the geomagnetic polarity scale recalculated using the astronomical 40Ar/39Ar calibration of the Fish Canyon sanidine. This technique allows the evaluation of the relative timing of base occurrences of stratigraphic index fossils such as ammonites, planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils. Furthermore, the Campanian-Maastrichtian boundary, as defined in the stratotype at Tercis, can be precisely positioned relative to carbon-isotope stratigraphy and the geomagnetic polarity timescale. The average value for the age of the Campanian-Maastrichtian boundary is 72.1 ± 0.1 Ma, estimated by three independent approaches that utilize the Fish Canyon sanidine calibration and Option 2 of the Maastrichtian astronomical timescale. The CMBE covers a time span of 2.5 Myr and reflects changes in the global carbon cycle probably related to tectonic processes than to glacioeustasy. The duration of the high-frequency d13C variations instead coincides with the frequency band of long eccentricity, indicative of orbital forcing of changes in climate and the global carbon cycle.

During the latest Cretaceous cooling phase, a positive shift in benthic foraminiferal d18O values lasting about 1.5 Myr (71.5-70 Ma) can be observed at a global scale (Campanian-Maastrichtian Boundary Event, CMBE). This d18O excursion is interpreted as being influenced by a change in intermediate- to deep-water circulation or by temporal build-up of Antarctic ice sheets. Here we test whether benthic foraminiferal assemblages from a southern high-latitudinal site near Antarctica (ODP Site 690) are influenced by the CMBE. If the d18O transition reflects a change in intermediate- to deep-water circulation from low-latitude to high-latitude water masses, then this change would result in cooler temperatures, higher oxygen concentration, and possibly lower organic-matter flux at the seafloor, resulting in a major benthic foraminiferal assemblage change. If, however, the d18O transition was mainly triggered by ice formation, no considerable compositional difference in benthic foraminiferal assemblages would be expected. Our data show a separation of the studied succession into two parts with distinctly different benthic foraminiferal assemblages. Species dominating the older part (73.0-70.5 Ma) tolerate less bottom water oxygenation and are typical components of low-latitude assemblages. In contrast, the younger part (70.0-68.0 Ma) is characterized by species that indicate well-oxygenated bottom waters and species common in high-latitude assemblages. We interpret the observed change in benthic foraminiferal assemblages toward a well-oxygenated environment to reflect the onset of a shift from low-latitude toward high-latitude dominated intermediate- to deep-water sources. This implies that a change in oceanic circulation was at least a major component of the CMBE.

Objective: The object of this study was to determine the effects of maternal tocolysis with glycerol trinitrate (GTN) patches on the neurodevelopment of infants. Study design: This was a randomized, multicenter, controlled trial comparing the efficacy of GTN patches with standard beta 2 agonist as tocolytic therapy. The previously reported outcomes of this study indicated no difference in neonatal mortality or morbidity to hospital discharge. One hundred fifty-six surviving infants from 2 Australian centers were psychometrically assessed using the Griffiths Mental development Scales (revised) at 18 months of age. Results: There was no difference in psychometric performance between those infants enrolled in either the GTN (81 infants) or beta 2 agonist (75 infants) arm of the study. Conclusion: This randomized trial supports no significant difference between GTN patches in comparison with standard beta 2 agonist for tocolytic therapy. Arguably, the world has become one large pervasive computing environment. Our planet is growing a digital skin of a wide array of sensors, hand-held computers, mobile phones, laptops, web services and publicly accessible web-cams. Often, these devices and services are deployed in groups, forming small communities of interacting devices. Service discovery protocols allow processes executing on each device to discover services offered by other devices within the community. These communities can be linked together to form a wide-area pervasive environment, allowing processes in one p u p tu interact with services in another. However, the costs of communication and the protocols by which this communication is mediated in the wide-area differ from those of intra-group, or local-area, communication. Communication is an expensive operation for small, battery powered devices, but it is less expensive for servem and workstations, which have a constant power supply and 81'e connected to high bandwidth networks. This paper introduces Superstring, a peer to-peer service discovery protocol optimised fur use in the wide-area. Its goals are to minimise computation and memory overhead in the face of large numbers of resources. It achieves this memory and computation scalability by distributing the storage cost of service descriptions and the computation cost of queries over multiple resolvers.

This thesis presents a program of work designed to explore and describe what the experience of caring for a child who has an Acute Life Threatening Event (ALTE) is like for the nurses. An ALTE may include a cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest or unplanned admission for a ward to the Paediatric Intensive Care unit. Using the MRC framework for the development of complex interventions, this information was then coupled with theory to develop the PREPARE and SUPPORT interventions. Given the wide-ranging and exploratory nature of this research, a pragmatic, mixed design approach was used to address the aims and objectives of the thesis. The mixed design approach included: a systematic literature review; international survey of practice; interviews with nurses and doctors using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis; development, refinement and evaluation of interventions during a feasibility study. Two studies were identified through the systematic review which aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of debriefing. The studies did not provide evidence to support the use of these interventions within healthcare. The international survey of practice demonstrated hospitals were using interventions to both prepare and support nurses for these events. The preparatory interventions were clinically focused and the majority of the supportive interventions included a debrief. The interventions were not being evaluated for effectiveness. The interviews conducted with nurses and doctors provided insight into what that experience was like for the participants. Using the MRC framework, this evidence was coupled with theory to develop the PREPARE and SUPPORT interventions. A multidisciplinary working party used an iterative process to refine and evaluate the interventions and study procedures were explored through a feasibility study. The pragmatic, mixed design approach demonstrated how the empirical evidence was coupled with theory and clinical expertise to develop interventions for use within the healthcare environment.
