Palladium complex-catalyzed carbonylation of arylsulfonyl chlorides in the presence of metal alkoxides M(OR)n (M=B, Al, and Ti) gives the corresponding esters along with diaryl disulfides. With metal carboxylates M(OCOR)n (M=Na, K, Ca, Mg, and Zn), the free acids are also obtained

Ceric ammonium sulfate, CAS, oxidizes naphthalene to 1,4-naphthoquinone in essentially quantitative yield in CH3CN-dil. H2SO4. Stoichiometric studies indicate that 6 mol of CAS are required for the oxidation of 1 mol of naphthalene to 1,4-naphthoquinone. Kinetic investigations reveal that the reaction takes place through initial formation of a 1:1 complex of naphthalene and cerium(IV) in an equilibrium step followed by slow decomposition of the complex to naphthalene radical cation. Kinetic results on the effects of acid strength, polarity of the medium, temperature and substituents are in accordance with this mechanism. Further conversion of the radical cation into 1,4-naphthoquinone takes place in fast steps involving a further 5 mol of cerium(IV) and 2 mol of H2O.

Intramolecular alkylation reaction of the bromoenone 12, obtained from S-carvone in three steps, furnished the bicyclo[2.2.2]octenone 13. Contrary to the anticipated radical annulation reaction, the bicyclic bromides 14 and 15, obtained from the enone 13, generated exclusively the cyclopropane product 18 via a 3-exo-trig radical cyclization on reaction with nBu3SnH and AIBN, even in the presence of a large excess of a radicophile. On the other hand, bromoenone 24, synthesized from R-carvone via S-naphthylcarvone 21, underwent radical annulation reaction in the presence of radicophiles to furnish the isotwistanes 25-28 in a regio- and stereospecific manner. Hydrogenation of the olefin 34, obtained from the diketone 27 via a regiospecific Wittig reaction, furnished the naphthyl-5-epipupukean-9-one 33, whereas stereoselective hydrogenation of the enone 36, prepared from the keto ester 25 via a Grignard reaction and dehydration sequence, generated the naphthylpupukeanone 32.

K(2,2,2-crypt)](2)As-7]center dot THF, 1 (2,2,2-crypt = 4,7,13,16,21,24-hexaoxa-1,10-diazabicyclo8.8.8]hexacosane) is the first well characterized seven-atom radical anion of group 15. UV-Vis spectroscopy confirms the presence and electronic structure of As-7](2-). Cyclic voltammetry in DMF solution shows the As-7(3) /As-7(2) redox couple as a one-electron reversible process. Theoretical investigations explore the bonding and properties of compound 1.

A radical annulation, i.e. an intermolecular radical Michael addition followed by an intramolecular Michael addition of the resultant radical (radical cyclisation) has been employed for the construction of chiral functionalised bicyclo[3.3,1]-nonanes. Thus reaction of carvone hydrohalides 7 with (n)Bu(3)SnH and AIBN in the presence of excess of radicophiles 4 furnished, regiospecifically bicyclo[3.3.1]nonanes 8-14, introducing three new chiral centres in a stereoselective manner. Analogously the bromide 18 generated the bridgehead substituted bicyclo[3.3.1]-nonanes 19-21.

Radical catalyzed thiol-ene reaction has become a useful alternative to the Huisgen-type click reaction as it helps to expand the variability in reaction conditions as well as the range of clickable entities. Thus, direct generation of hyper-branched polymers bearing peripheral allyl groups that could be clicked using a variety of functional thiols would be of immense value. A specifically designed AB(2) type monomer, that carries two allyl benzyl ethers groups and one alcohol functionality, was shown to undergo self-condensation under acid-catalyzed melt-transetherification to yield a hyperbranched polyether that carries numerous allyl end-groups. Importantly, it was shown that the kinetics of polymerization is not dramatically affected by the change of the ether unit from previously studied methyl benzyl ether to an allyl benzyl ether. The peripheral allyl groups were readily clicked quantitatively, using a variety of thiols, to generate an hydrocarbon-soluble octadecyl-derivative, amphiphilic systems using 2-mercaptoethanol and chiral amino acid (N-benzoyl cystine) derivatized hyperbranched structures; thus demonstrating the versatility of this novel class of clickable hyperscaffolds. Hydrolytic polymerization of caprolactam to Nylon 6 in a semibatch reactor is carried out by heating a mixture of water and caprolactam. Evaporation of volatiles caused by heating results in a pressure build-up. After the pressure reaches a predetermined value, vapors are vented to keep the pressure constant for some time, and thereafter, to lower the pressure to a value slightly above atmospheric in a preprogrammed manner. The characteristics of the polymer are determined by the chemical reactions and the vaporization of water and caprolactam. The semibatch operation has been simulated and the predictions have been compared with industria data. The observed temperature and pressure histories were predicted with a fair degree of accuracy. It was found that the predictions of the degree of polymerization however are sensitive to the vapor-liquid equilibrium relations. A comparison with an earlier model, which neglected mass transfer resistance, indicates that simulation using the VLE data of Giori and Hayes and accounting for mass transfer resistance is more reliable.
