With the advent of the law about same-sex marriage in France, the aim of this dissertation is to analyse the relationship between homosexuality and rap music in the country and to determine to which degree this musical genre can influence people on this matter. Islam has flavoured rap from its beginnings because the vast majority of rappers has a Muslim culture. It is true that, Islam goes beyond the mere disapproval of homosexuality affirming that it is a vile fornication punishable by death. This leads rappers to a rejection of homosexuality in their songs. And, thanks to mass media, these songs contributed to the spreading of the stigma of homophobia upon the “mainstream”. Nevertheless, since 2009, a growing crop of rappers began to support the LGBT community with their work. Rap songs became in this way the anthem of the LGBT campaigns, out from the classic mass media. The result of this dissertation is that rap can have a strong influence upon population and can help them change their mind upon certain subjects, as it was the case for the homosexual cause.

We explored the functional organization of semantic memory for music by comparing priming across familiar songs both within modalities (Experiment 1, tune to tune; Experiment 3, category label to lyrics) and across modalities (Experiment 2, category label to tune; Experiment 4, tune to lyrics). Participants judged whether or not the target tune or lyrics were real (akin to lexical decision tasks). We found significant priming, analogous to linguistic associative-priming effects, in reaction times for related primes as compared to unrelated primes, but primarily for within-modality comparisons. Reaction times to tunes (e.g., "Silent Night") were faster following related tunes ("Deck the Hall") than following unrelated tunes ("God Bless America"). However, a category label (e.g., Christmas) did not prime tunes from within that category. Lyrics were primed by a related category label, but not by a related tune. These results support the conceptual organization of music in semantic memory, but with potentially weaker associations across modalities.

We describe some characteristics of persistent musical and verbal retrieval episodes, commonly known as "earworms." In Study 1, participants first filled out a survey summarizing their earworm experiences retrospectively. This was followed by a diary study to document each experience as it happened. Study 2 was an extension of the diary study with a larger sample and a focus on triggering events. Consistent with popular belief, these persistent musical memories were common across people and occurred frequently for most respondents, and were often linked to recent exposure to preferred music. Contrary to popular belief, the large majority of such experiences were not unpleasant. Verbal earworms were uncommon. These memory experiences provide an interesting example of extended memory retrieval for music in a naturalistic situation.

Dealing with popular music in premodern times historical research usually focuses on so called “Volksmusik”. But already in the 18th century researchers were disappointed to find only few traces of imaginary “traditional” music in Switzerland. They unfortunately overlooked that common people kept on with their own stubborn musical culture: Beginning with the Reformation the authorities encouraged the communities to employ schoolmasters who were able to teach music. Their goal was that everybody should be able to participate in liturgical music actively. Over generations even people with no special musical talent adopted their own repertoire of psalms plus techniques of reading music and polyphonic singing. Spontaneous choral singing evolved into a common everyday practice. The most ambitious and brightest teachers even taught instrumental lessons at home on their proper pianos and chamber organs or encouraged the villagers to build new prestigious organs in their churches. The financial burden of such instruments weighted heavily on the communities. Some of them received financial support from the government, albeit unwillingly because it was obvious to the rulers that the villages just wanted to overtop each other. Homemade music was the most important issue in the cultural life of most parishes. Rich communes spent a lot of money to win the best voices on-site for their church choirs. Belonging to an elitists’ singer association paved the way to the farmer-village’s highlevel sociability.

ABSTRACT. The present projects carry out an acoustic study of enclosure: Rafael Frühbeck Concert Hall, in Burgos, fulfilling the indications demanded by the standard UNE-EN ISO 3382-1:2010 “Measurement of room acoustic parameters – Part 1: Performance spaces. Two acoustics studies are developed on the same enclosure. In first of them, the enclosure is formed for the accomplishment of events such as conferences or congresses, where speech intelligibility is a determining factor. In the second study, the enclosure forms for musical performances like concerts of symphony orchestra or chamber music. In this acoustic configuration, speech intelligibility is not as determining as the correct interpretation and enjoyment of music in audience areas. For both configurations of the enclosure, a statistical processing of the data has been realised with the purpose of obtaining a unique value of each studied acoustic parameter. In this way, the results for both configurations are compared, and the obtained values of each one of the acoustic parameters are evaluated with the purpose of knowing if they are adapted to the acoustic needs demanded by the type of developed event. In addition, a geometric model of the enclosure has been constructed by computer, for both acoustic configurations; making use of the professional software of prediction and acoustical simulation, EASE. An acoustic study is developed on the geometric model by means of simulation, following the rules carried out during the measurement “in situ”. The results obtained by simulation are compared with the obtained ones from the measurement “in situ”, to study the validation of the geometric model. Initially the acoustic parameter chosen to validate the model is Reverberation Time. If a good validation of the geometric model is reached, it can be used to realize acoustic predictions by simulation, when a sound reinforcement system is used within the enclosure. The sound reinforcement system located in the enclosure under study has not been used in the present project.

Madrid has been the center of Spanish musical scene and industry since the 80s, when “la movida” becomes the metaphor for the new colorful, young and cosmopolitan country established with the arrival of democracy. The city, in this way, is basically a place. But this sense of place started to crash with the arrival of digital music. In the new paradigm, intermediaries were supposed to disappear and music was something contained in networks and computers. The question now is how to integrate digital music, a nonphysical, individual experience, with the way in which the city of Madrid is lived through in musical terms. With the advent of digital music, concerts became the primary source of income for musicians. The centrality of the gig can be understood as the confirmation that we are living in an economy of experience. This centrality also reorganized the way in which music is produced and consumed: now, records are produced in order to create the opportunity of a musical event (band promote their tour as presentation of their latest recordings) that can be promoted in social networks and media; concerts are the places where musicians construct their fans’ communities and are the places were records are sold, not a way to know the band but to demonstrate both the support for the band and the status of the listeners. To study the place of music in the process of metropolization in Madrid we need to understand music as a field of tension
