Seu texto contém descrições sobre a arquitetura colonial e do século XIX. Pohl também produziu um atlas que complementou, por meio de belas ilustrações, o trabalho contido nesses dois volumes. Flow stabilization with active hydrodynamic cloaks

We demonstrate that fluid flow cloaking solutions, based on active hydrodynamic metamaterials, exist for two-dimensional flows past a cylinder in a wide range of Reynolds numbers (Re's), up to approximately 200. Within the framework of the classical Brinkman equation for homogenized porous flow, we demonstrate using two different methods that such cloaked flows can be dynamically stable for Re's in the range of 5-119. The first highly efficient method is based on a linearization of the Brinkman-Navier-Stokes equation and finding the eigenfrequencies of the least stable eigenperturbations; the second method is a direct numerical integration in the time domain. We show that, by suppressing the von Kármán vortex street in the weakly turbulent wake, porous flow cloaks can raise the critical Reynolds number up to about 120 or five times greater than for a bare uncloaked cylinder. © 2012 American Physical Society.

Molekularbiologische Funktionsanalysen von Thioredoxinen aus Dictyostelium discoideum und Identifizierung neuer Interaktionspartner durch das Two-Hybrid-System

Thioredoxins are small, regulatory proteins with a mass of approximately 12 kDa and a characteristic conserved active center, which is represented in the pentapeptide trp-cys-gly-pro-cys. Up to now it is not possible to present a complete list of thioredoxin interaction partners because there is no predictable sequence in the target enzymes where thioredoxins can interact with. To get closer information about the functions and possible interaction partners of the three thioredoxins from the social soil amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum (DdTrx1 - 3) we have chosen two different strategies. In the first one the thioredoxin levels in the cell should changed by different mutants. But both the antisense technique as well as the creation of knock out mutants were not appropiate strategies in this case. Just an thioredoxin overexpressing mutant results in a developmental phenotype which allows some conclusions for possible functions of the thioredoxin in Dictyostelium discoideum. The second strategie was the two hybrid system where thioredoxin interactions partners can identified systematically. After a screening with a cDNA library from Dictyostelium 13 potential interaction partners could be detected, among them a ribonucleotid reductase, TRFA, two different cytochrome c oxidase subunits, filopodin, three ribosomal proteins, the elongationfactor 1a and the alcohol dehydrogenase from yeast. The verification of the interaction between thioredoxin and these two hybrid clones happened indirectly by a dobble mutant of thioredoxin 1, where the cysteines in the active center were replaced by redox-inactive serins. Further examinations of two choosen candidates resulted that the alcohol dehydrogenase from yeast is a thioredoxin-modululated enzym and that there is an interaction between the elongationfactor 1a and the thioredoxin 1 from Dictyostelium discoideum.

Zur Adsorption und Reaktion von Stickstoffmonoxid an Aktivkohle

Die Verwendung von Aktivkohlen und -koksen stellt eine Alternative zu herkömmlichen Prozessen zur Verminderung der NOx-Emissionen in Rauchgasen dar. An diesen Materialien wird Stickstoffmonoxid adsorbiert und katalytisch zu N2 reduziert. Eine einheitliche Erklärung über die ablaufenden Vorgänge und die Reaktionsmechanismen gibt es noch nicht. Die Ergebnisse der bisher veröffentlichten wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten sind sehr unterschiedlich, wenn nicht sogar widersprüchlich. In dieser Arbeit wird, anhand der Messung von NO-Durchbruchskurven und thermischen Desorptionsspektren, die Adsorption und Reaktion von Stickstoffmonoxid an Aktivkohlen und -koksen in Anwesenheit von Sauerstoff und Wasserdampf untersucht. Zur Durchführung der experimentellen Untersuchungen wird eine Versuchsanlage, bestehend aus einer Vorrichtung zur Gasgemischaufbereitung, einem Festbettreaktor und einer Gasanalytik, konzipiert und aufgebaut. Die Untersuchungen erfolgen bei Temperaturen zwischen 100 und 150 °C. Die NO-, O2- und H2O-Konzentrationen werden anhand der Rauchgaszusammensetzung kohlegefeuerter Kraftwerke gewählt. Die experimentellen Untersuchungen konzentrieren sich auf die Verwendung einer Aktivkohle aus Ölpalmschalen, die in einem Drehrohrreaktor am Institut für Thermische Energietechnik der Universität Kassel hergestellt wurde. Die experimentellen Ergebnisse zeigen, dass während des Prozesses NO-Adsorption, -Reduktion und -Oxidation, NO2-Bildung, -Adsorption und -reduktive Desorption, H2O-Adsorption sowie O2-Vergasung gleichzeitig stattfinden. Bei niedrigen Temperaturen werden die NO2-Bildung und die Adsorption bevorzugt. Die NO-Reduktion läuft über adsorbiertes NO mit CO2- und CO-Bildung. Durch O2-Vergasung werden aktive freie Cf-Plätzen für die NO-Reaktion und -Adsorption gebildet. Wasserdampf wird an der Aktivkohle adsorbiert und belegt aktive Plätze für diese Prozesse. Aus den experimentellen Ergebnissen werden kinetische und Gleichgewichtsparameter der NO-Sorption bestimmt. Ein vereinfachtes mathematisches Modell des Festbettreaktors, das zur Berechnung der NO-Durchbruchskurven bei unterschiedlichen Temperaturen dient, wird aufgestellt.
