Interest in water treatment by electrochemical methods has grown in recent years. Electrochemical oxidation has been applied particularly successfully to degrade different organic pollutants and disinfect drinking water. This study summarizes the effectiveness of the electrochemical oxidation technique in inactivating different primary biofilm forming paper mill bacteria as well as sulphide and organic material in pulp and paper mill wastewater in laboratory scale batch experiments. Three different electrodes, borondoped diamond (BDD), mixed metal oxide (MMO) and PbO2, were employed as anodes. The impact on inactivation efficiency of parameters such as current density and initial pH or chloride concentration of synthetic paper machine water was studied. The electrochemical behaviour of the electrodes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry with MMO, BDD and PbO2 electrodes in synthetic paper mill water as also with MMO and stainless steel electrodes with biocides. Some suggestions on the formation of different oxidants and oxidation mechanisms were also presented during the treatment. Aerobic paper mill bacteria species (Deinococcus geothermalis, Pseudoxanthomonas taiwanensis and Meiothermus silvanus) were inactivated effectively (>2 log) at MMO electrodes by current density of 50 mA/cm2 and the time taken three minutes. Increasing current density and initial chloride concentration of paper mill water increased the inactivation rate of Deinococcus geothermalis. The inactivation order of different bacteria species was Meiothermus silvanus > Pseudoxanthomonas taiwanensis > Deinococcus geothermalis. It was observed that inactivation was mainly due to the electrochemically generated chlorine/hypochlorite from chloride present in the water and also residual disinfection by chlorine/hypochlorite occurred. In real paper mill effluent treatment sulphide oxidation was effective with all the different initial concentrations (almost 100% reduction, current density 42.9 mA/cm2) and also anaerobic bacteria inactivation was observed (almost 90% reduction by chloride concentration of 164 mg/L and current density of 42.9 mA/cm2 in five minutes). Organic material removal was not as effective when comparing with other tested techniques, probably due to the relatively low treatment times. Cyclic voltammograms in synthetic paper mill water with stainless steel electrode showed that H2O2 could be degraded to radicals during the cathodic runs. This emphasises strong potential of combined electrochemical treatment with this biocide in bacteria inactivation in paper mill environments.

The aim of this work is to evaluate the mechanism of stock removal and the ground surface quality of advanced ceramics machined by a surface grinding process using diamond grinding wheels. The analysis of the grinding performance was done regarding the cutting surface wear behavior of the grinding wheel for ceramic workpieces. The ground surface was evaluated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). As a result it can be said that the mechanism of material removal in the grinding of ceramic is largely one of brittle fracture. The increase of the h max can reduce the tangential force required by the process. Although, it results in an increase in the surface damage, reducing the mechanical properties of the ground component.

Venäläisten suuryritysten on kovan kansainvälisen kilpailun vuoksi laajennettava ansaintamahdollisuuksiaan.

This master thesis examines the possibility of implementing a national industrial symbiosis programme in Finland. Industrial symbiosis is a close cooperation between companies in which the actors make use of each other's wastes and by-products as raw materials for pro-cesses. Symbiosis programme aims to promote industrial symbiosis by identifying possible synergies. In the United Kingdom (UK), a national level programme NISP (National Industri-al Symbiosis Programme) has been successfully implemented. This thesis studies whether it would be possible to implement a similar program in Finland. The implementation of the pro-gram in Finland is evaluated by analyzing and comparing Finnish and British business envi-ronments using PESTEL and diamond models. The goal is to identify factors that promote or hinder the implementation of the programme in Finland. Based on this study, it can be said that implementing the programme in Finland is possible. The programme can be carried out in almost the same principles as in the UK, but some char-acteristics of the Finnish business environment, such as the high level of technological know-how, should especially be taken as an advantage. On the other hand, there are features, such as low level domestic demand, which may prevent the implementation of the program unless they are given special attention.

Economic growth stimulated by natural resources: a note on the Botswana experience. Botswana was the fastest growing economy in the world in the 1966-1989 period. Even though the discovery and exploitation of large diamond reserves had played an essential role in such an impressive performance, favorable economic, political and institutional conditions allowed the use of the resulting large export revenues as a lever for economic growth, though not for development.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of increased soil moisture levels on
the decomposition processes in a peat-extracted bog. Field experiments, in which soil
moisture levels were manipulated, were conducted using 320 microcosms in the
Wainfleet Bog from May 2002 to November 2004. Decomposition was measured using
litter bags and monitoring the abundance of macro invertebrate decomposers known as
Collembola. Litter bags containing wooden toothpicks (n=2240), filter paper (n=480)
and Betula pendula leaves (n=40) were buried in the soil and removed at regular time
intervals up to one year. The results of the litter bag studies demonstrated a significant
reduction of the decomposition of toothpicks (p<0.001), filter paper (p<0.001), and
Betula pendula leaves (p
