The present study analyses transdisciplinary co-production of knowledge in the development of organic farming in Switzerland by using Fleck's theory of thought styles and thought collectives. Three different phases can be identified throughout the historical development. The initial phase lasting from the beginning of the 1920s to the early 1970s contains numerous characteristics of diverse well-established definitions and concepts of transdisciplinarity and represents a successful transdisciplinary process, which has not been perceived as such in the past and present scientific discussion. The second and third phases show an increasing segregation of thought collectives, caused by internal changes such as the establishment of specialised research institutions and external processes like agriculture policy and market development. These developments led to a decreasing degree of transdisciplinarity. We observe an ambiguous trend: the continuously growing and today well-established positive societal recognition of an initially rather little accepted newcomer movement is associated with the gradual loss of its very valuable forms of knowledge co-production and the related philosophical background. In order to maintain the various forms of transdisciplinary co-production of knowledge, one has to reflect not only their results or outcome but also the whole cooperation process, which has led to these results. The understanding of the historical development and characteristic features of knowledge co-production as presented in this study will help to reinforce transdisciplinary research in organic agriculture and research on transdisciplinarity in general.

While sound and video may capture viewers' attention, interaction can captivate them. This has not been available prior to the advent of Digital Television. In fact, what lies at the heart of the Digital Television revolution is this new type of interactive content, offered in the form of interactive Television (iTV) services. On top of that, the new world of converged networks has created a demand for a new type of converged services on a range of mobile terminals (Tablet PCs, PDAs and mobile phones). This paper aims at presenting a new approach to service creation that allows for the semi-automatic translation of simulations and rapid prototypes created in the accessible desktop multimedia authoring package Macromedia Director into services ready for broadcast. This is achieved by a series of tools that de-skill and speed-up the process of creating digital TV user interfaces (UI) and applications for mobile terminals. The benefits of rapid prototyping are essential for the production of these new types of services, and are therefore discussed in the first section of this paper. In the following sections, an overview of the operation of content, service, creation and management sub-systems is presented, which illustrates why these tools compose an important and integral part of a system responsible of creating, delivering and managing converged broadcast and telecommunications services. The next section examines a number of metadata languages candidates for describing the iTV services user interface and the schema language adopted in this project. A detailed description of the operation of the two tools is provided to offer an insight of how they can be used to de-skill and speed-up the process of creating digital TV user interfaces and applications for mobile terminals. Finally, representative broadcast oriented and telecommunication oriented converged service components are also introduced, demonstrating how these tools have been used to generate different types of services.

The phenomenon of Open Innovation has been gaining prominence over the last decade. Idea competitions have been used in a variety of industrial sectors. Nevertheless, the legal issues raised by this topic have not been broadly addressed, yet. These arise from the adverse interests of the actors. The company which organizes an idea competition would usually like to have the opportunity to comprehensively use the solutions, ideas or products submitted by the competition entrants. For the company it is important to obtain all intellectual property rights in the idea, in the product created as a result and, thus, in the rights to be exploited in the future, in particular, patents, utility models, trademarks, copyrights and registered designs as well as other industrial property rights. The participant would like to participate to the greatest extent possible in the success of the submitted solution. This affects, firstly, the question of fair remuneration or further participation in any profits earned as well as, secondly, any personal rights such as being named as inventor or author. The article aims to show the contractual difficulties which have to be addressed tailoring theterms of an idea competition under German law.

Spiders are the most important terrestrial predators among arthropods. Their ecological success is reflected by a high biodiversity and the conquest of nearly every terrestrial habitat. Spiders are closely associated with silk, a material, often seen to be responsible for their great ecological success and gaining high attention in life sciences. However, it is often overlooked that more than half of all Recent spider species have abandoned web building or never developed such an adaptation. These species must have found other, more economic solutions for prey capture and retention, compensating the higher energy costs of increased locomotion activity. Here we show that hairy adhesive pads (scopulae) are closely associated with the convergent evolution of a vagrant life style, resulting in highly diversified lineages of at least, equal importance as the derived web building taxa. Previous studies often highlighted the idea that scopulae have the primary function of assisting locomotion, neglecting the fact that only the distal most pads (claw tufts) are suitable for those purposes. The former observations, that scopulae are used in prey capture, are largely overlooked. Our results suggest the scopulae evolved as a substitute for silk in controlling prey and that the claw tufts are, in most cases, a secondary development. Evolutionary trends towards specialized claw tufts and their composition from a low number of enlarged setae to a dense array of slender ones, as well as the secondary loss of those pads are discussed further. Hypotheses about the origin of the adhesive setae and their diversification throughout evolution are provided.

It has previously been published that interferon-α (type I IFN) improves clinical symptoms of asthma patients. Since human basophils are major inflammatory cells in maintaining chronic allergic asthma we investigate whether type I IFN affect human blood basophils. Furthermore, previous studies have shown that spontaneous apoptosis of human basophils is slow due to constitutive expression of anti-apoptotic BCL-2 family members. In addition, IL-3 exceptionally promotes survival of basophils by enhancing constitutive expression of BCL-2 family members and by inducing de-novo expression of Pim-1 kinase. Thus, we also assessed whether type I IFN might overcome IL-3-induced survival of human basophils. Our data show that type I IFN enhances apoptosis in purified human blood basophils compared to spontaneous apoptosis of controls or type II IFN treated cells. Furthermore, we demonstrate that both type I IFN and FasL enhance apoptosis in human basophils with similar efficiency in a rather additive than synergistic way. Analyses of signaling pathways reveal that type I IFN promote prolonged phosphorylation of STAT1/STAT2. By using a pan-JAK inhibitor the phosphorylation of STAT1/STAT2 is inhibited and most importantly the pro-apoptotic effect of type I IFN is abolished. On the other hand, type I IFN do not reduce IL-3-induced de novo expression of Pim-1 and BCL-2. This is in line with our observation that IL-3-induced survival is dominant over type I IFN-enhanced apoptosis. In addition, phosphorylation of p38 MAPK in type I IFN treated cells is comparable to non-treated cells. Particularly however, inhibition of this p-p38 activity abrogates apoptosis as well. We conclude that type I IFN-enhanced apoptosis is tightly regulated by the cooperation of JAK/STAT and p38 MAPK pathways. Our study identifies a so far unknown effect of type I IFN and may explain the improved clinical symptoms of asthma patients treated with type I IFN.

The Mendelian inheritance of genetic mutations can lead to adult-onset cardiovascular disease. Several genetic loci have been mapped for the familial form of Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms (TAA), and many causal mutations have been identified for this disease. Intracranial Aneurysms (ICA) also show linkage heterogeneity, but no mutations have been identified causing familial ICA alone. Here, we characterized a large family (TAA288) with an autosomal dominant pattern of inherited aneurysms. It is intriguing that female patients predominantly present with ICA and male patients predominantly with TAA in this family. To identify a causal mutation in this family, a genome-wide linkage analysis was previously performed on nine members of this family using the 50k GenChips Hind array from Affymetrix. This analysis eventually identified a single disease-segregating locus, on chromosome 5p15. We build upon this previous analysis in this study, hypothesizing that a genetic mutation inherited in this locus leads to the sex-specific phenotype of TAA and ICA in this family First we refined the boundaries of the 5p15 disease linked locus down to the genomic coordinates 5p15: 3,424,465- 6,312,925 (GRCh37/hg19 Assembly). This locus was named the TAA288 critical interval. Next, we sequenced candidate genes within the TAA288 critical interval. The selection of genes was simplified by the relatively small number of well-characterized genetic elements within the region. Seeking novel or rare disease-segregating variants, we initially observed a single point alteration in the metalloproteinase gene ADAMTS16 fulfilling this criteria. This variant was later classified as a low-frequency population polymorphism (rs72647757), but we continued to explore the potential role of the ADAMTS16 as the cause of disease in TAA288. We observed that fibroblasts cultured from TAA288 patients consistently upregulated the expression of this gene more strongly compared to matched control fibroblasts when treated with the cytokine TGF-β1, though there was some variation in the exact nature of this expression. We also observed evidence that this protein is expressed at elevated levels in aortic aneurysm tissue from patients with mutations in the gene TGFBR2 and Marfan syndrome, shown by immunohistochemical detection of this protein.

The co-occurrence of warm conveyor belts (WCBs), strongly ascending moist airstreams in extratropical cyclones, and stratospheric potential vorticity (PV) streamers, indicators for breaking Rossby waves on the tropopause, is investigated for a 21-yr period in the Northern Hemisphere using Interim European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Re-Analysis (ERA-Interim) data. WCB outflows and PV streamers are respectively identified as two- and three-dimensional objects and tracked during their life cycle. PV streamers are more frequent than WCB outflows and nearly 15% of all PV streamers co-occur with WCBs during their life cycle, whereas about 60% of all WCB outflows co-occur with PV streamers. Co-occurrences are most frequent over the North Atlantic and North Pacific in spring and winter. WCB outflows are often located upstream of the PV streamers and form earlier, indicating the importance of diabatic processes for downstream Rossby wave breaking. Less frequently, PV streamers occur first, leading to the formation of new WCBs.
