Time correlation functions between the velocity of a tagged particle and velocities of particles within specified ranges of initial separations have been obtained by molecular dynamics simulation. These correlation functions have allowed us to analyze the momentum transfer between particles in different coordination shells. Two simple liquids at very different densities and two purely repulsive potentials with very different softnesses have been considered. The longitudinal correlations, which are the velocity cross-correlations along the initial direction defined by the centers of two given particles, have been calculated separately. It has been proven that these correlations should be attributed to particles both in front of and behind the central one. As with propagating longitudinal modes, they are strongly dependent on the softness of the potential core. Some characteristic features of the velocity correlation functions after the initial rise should be related to nonlongitudinal correlations. It has been shown that velocity cross-correlations between distinct particles cannot only be attributed to the direct interactions among particles, but also to the motions induced by the movement of a tagged particle on their neighbors.

The relationship between sperm velocity and individual age, size, body condition and fluctuating asymmetry was investigated in Alpine whitefish Coregonus fatioi. The fish analysed belonged to one among several sympatric whitefish populations of Lake Thun, Switzerland, which are characterized by a high prevalence of gonad alterations. Therefore, sperm velocity data were also tested for a link between gonad deformation and sperm swimming speed. Sperm velocity was significantly lower in larger-grown individuals and in individuals of higher body condition. As expected, sperm velocity was higher in males with higher levels of fluctuating asymmetry, but it did not significantly vary with male age. Moreover, variation in sperm velocity was found to be significantly higher in individuals showing some types of gonad alterations but it did not significantly correlate with the presence of other types of alterations. A 38 year old woman having chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction associated with mitochondrial myopathy is reported. The clinical and radiographic features suggested the diagnosis of chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction. Muscular atrophy and ophthalmoplegia led to muscle biopsy, which disclosed accumulation of normal and abnormal mitochondria ('ragged red fibres'), characteristic of mitochondrial myopathy.

We consider the distribution of cross sections of clusters and the density-density correlation functions for the A+B¿0 reaction. We solve the reaction-diffusion equations numerically for random initial distributions of reactants. When both reactant species have the same diffusion coefficients the distribution of cross sections and the correlation functions scale with the diffusion length and obey superuniversal laws (independent of dimension). For different diffusion coefficients the correlation functions still scale, but the scaling functions depend on the dimension and on the diffusion coefficients. Furthermore, we display explicitly the peculiarities of the cluster-size distribution in one dimension.

Objective: Jaundice is the clinical manifestation, of hyperbilirubinemia. It is considered as a sign of either a liver disease or, less often, of a hemolytic disorder. It can be divided into obstructive and non obstructive type, involving increase of indirect (non-conjugated) bilirubin or increase of direct (conjugated) bilirubin, respectively, but it can be also manifested as mixed type. Methods: This article updates the current knoweledge concerning the jaundice's etiology, pathophysiological mechanisms, and complications ant treatment by reviewing of the latest medical literature. It also presents an approach of jaundice's treatment and pathogenesis, in special populations as in neonates and pregnant women. Results: The treatment is consistent in the management of the subjective diseases responsible for the jaundice and its complications. The clinical prognosis of the jaundice depends on the etiology. Surgical treatment of jaundiced patients is associated with high mortality and morbidity rates. Studies have shown that the severity of jaundice and the presence of malignant disease are importan risk factors for post-operative mortality. Conclusions: Early detection of jaundice is of vital importance because of its involvement in malignancy or in other benign conditions requiring immediate treatment in order to avoid further complications.

The trends in compliance with the dietary recommendations of the Swiss Society for Nutrition in the Geneva population were assessed for the period from 1999 to 2009 using 10 cross-sectional, population-based surveys (Bus Santé study) with a total of 9,320 participants aged 35 to 75 years (50% women). Dietary intake was assessed using a self-administered, validated, semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Trends were assessed by logistic regression adjusting for age, smoking status, education, and nationality using survey year as the independent variable. After excluding participants with extreme intakes, the percentage of participants with a cholesterol intake of <300 mg/day increased from 40.8% in 1999 to 43.6% in 2009 for men (multivariate-adjusted P for trend=0.04) and from 57.8% to 61.4% in women (multivariate-adjusted P for trend=0.06). Calcium intake >1 g/day decreased from 53.3% to 46% in men and from 47.6% to 40.7% in women (multivariate-adjusted P for trend<0.001). Adequate iron intake decreased from 68.3% to 65.3% in men and from 13.3% to 8.4% in women (multivariate-adjusted P for trend<0.001). Conversely, no significant changes were observed for carbohydrates, protein, total fat (including saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids), fiber, and vitamins D and A. We conclude that the quality of the Swiss diet did not improve between 1999 and 2009 and that intakes deviate substantially from expert recommendations for health promotion and chronic disease risk reduction.

The metabolic syndrome considerably increases the risk of cardiovascular and renal events in hypertension. It has been associated with a wide range of classical and new cardiovascular risk factors as well as with early signs of subclinical cardiovascular and renal damage. Obesity and insulin resistance, beside a constellation of independent factors, which include molecules of hepatic, vascular, and immunologic origin with proinflammatory properties, have been implicated in the pathogenesis. The close relationships among the different components of the syndrome and their associated disturbances make it difficult to understand what the underlying causes and consequences are. At each of these key points, insulin resistance and obesity/proinflammatory molecules, interaction of demographics, lifestyle, genetic factors, and environmental fetal programming results in the final phenotype. High prevalence of end-organ damage and poor prognosis has been demonstrated in a large number of cross-sectional and a few number of prospective studies. The objective of treatment is both to reduce the high risk of a cardiovascular or a renal event and to prevent the much greater chance that metabolic syndrome patients have to develop type 2 diabetes or hypertension. Treatment consists in the opposition to the underlying mechanisms of the metabolic syndrome, adopting lifestyle interventions that effectively reduce visceral obesity with or without the use of drugs that oppose the development of insulin resistance or body weight gain. Treatment of the individual components of the syndrome is also necessary. Concerning blood pressure control, it should be based on lifestyle changes, diet, and physical exercise, which allows for weight reduction and improves muscular blood flow. When antihypertensive drugs are necessary, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II-AT1 receptor blockers, or even calcium channel blockers are preferable over diuretics and classical beta-blockers in monotherapy, if no compelling indications are present for its use. If a combination of drugs is required, low-dose diuretics can be used. A combination of thiazide diuretics and beta-blockers should be avoided.

Introduction: Natalizumab, a monoclonal antibody binding to the alpha4 integrins, is efficient in preventing relapses and progression of disability in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. However, a total of seven MS patients treated with natalizumab suffered from progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), on a total of 53?000 patients (data of March 6, 2009) treated with this drug. PML is a disease affecting immunosuppressed people, which is caused by the polyomavirus JC (JCV). This virus produces a lytic infection of the oligodendrocytes. Yet, natalizumab cannot be considered as a classical immunosuppressant, such as suggested by the fact that no increased incidence of other opportunistic infections was reported with this drug. It has been postulated that, by closing the blood-brain, natalizumab might prevent JCV-specific CD8_ T cells to reach the CNS and perform immune surveillance. Alternatively, it has been suggested that this drug acts by releasing JCV from the bone marrow, one of its site of latency. In this study, we address the question whether there is an increased activity of JCV in the blood of natalizumab-treated MS patients. Material and Methods: In this prospective longitudinal study, we are following a cohort of 24 MS patients receiving monthly injections of natalizumab. Blood and urine are drawn every one to three months, up to 12 months. As a control group, we follow 16 MS patients treated with IFN-beta. For this control group, there are two time-points: before and 1094 months after treatment onset. We are analysing the viral (JCV-, EBV- and CMV-) as well as the myelin- (MOG-, MOBP-) specific cellular immune responses using proliferation and ELISPOT (IFNgamma) assays. For JCV, we study the response against VP1, the major capsid protein. For JCV VP1, MOG and MOBP, we use 15-mer peptides overlapping by 10 amino acids, thus eliciting CD4_ as well as CD8_ T cell response. These peptides encompasse the whole sequence of the proteins. For EBV and CMV, we use pools of immunodominant 8- to 10-mer peptides eliciting CD8_ T cells. At the same time-points, using RTPCR, we determine the presence of JCV DNA coding for the VP1 protein in the PBMC, plasma, and urine. Results: At the time of writing this abstract, 16 patients have reached the 9-month (T9), and 11 the T12 time-point. We expect that by the ISNV meeting in June 2009, 18 and 14 patients will be at T9 and T12, respectively. Virological and immunological results will be presented. 9th International Symposium on NeuroVirology 2_6 June 2009 39 J Neurovirol Downloaded from informahealthcare.com by Cantonale et Universitaire on 06/25/10 For personal use only. Conclusions: This ongoing longitudinal prospective study should tell us whether there is an enhanced JCV activity in the peripheral blood of patients on natalizumab. We conducted one experimental intervention based on extended contact principles aimed at fostering the formation of cross-group friendships within educational settings. Italian school children took part in a school competition for the best essay on personal experiences of cross-group friendships with immigrants, to be written in small groups. This manipulation was intended to favour the exchange of personal positive cross-group experiences, thus capitalizing on the benefits of extended contact. In the control condition, participants wrote an essay on friendship, without reference to cross-group relations. Results revealed that children who took part in the intervention reported a higher number of outgroup friends 3 months later. This indirect effect was sequentially mediated by pro-contact ingroup and outgroup norms and by outgroup contact behavioural intentions. This study provides experimental evidence that interventions based on extended contact can foster cross-group friendship formation. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.

Background: Few clinical studies have focused on the alcoholindependent cardiovascular effects of the phenolic compounds of red wine (RW). Objective: We aimed to evaluate the effects of ethanol and phenolic compounds of RW on the expression of inflammatory biomarkers related to atherosclerosis in subjects at high risk of cardiovascular disease. Design: Sixty-seven high-risk, male volunteers were included in a randomized, crossover consumption trial. After a washout period, all subjects received RW (30 g alcohol/d), the equivalent amount of dealcoholized red wine (DRW), or gin (30 g alcohol/d) for 4 wk. Before and after each intervention period, 7 cellular and 18 serum inflammatory biomarkers were evaluated. Results: Alcohol increased IL-10 and decreased macrophage-derived chemokine concentrations, whereas the phenolic compounds of RW decreased serum concentrations of intercellular adhesion molecule- 1, E-selectin, and IL-6 and inhibited the expression of lymphocyte function-associated antigen 1 in T lymphocytes and macrophage-1 receptor, Sialil-Lewis X, and C-C chemokine receptor type 2 expression in monocytes. Both ethanol and phenolic compounds of RW downregulated serum concentrations of CD40 antigen, CD40 ligand, IL-16, monocyte chemotactic protein-1, and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1. Conclusion: The results suggest that the phenolic content of RW may modulate leukocyte adhesion molecules, whereas both ethanol and polyphenols of RW may modulate soluble inflammatory mediators in high-risk patients.
