Con la aprobación de la nueva Constitución de la República en el año 2008, la competencia para el trámite del hábeas corpus se trasladó del ámbito de las alcaldías municipales a los jueces y juezas de la Función Judicial; su histórica presencia en la legislación ecuatoriana denota la importancia en la protección de los derechos ciudadanos en especial el de la libertad. Con la presente investigación pretendemos demostrar si continúa siendo efectiva desde el campo del derecho procesal, esta acción constitucional en la protección de la libertad así como sus derechos conexos, en especial desde los cambios introducidos en la Constitución del 2008. El estudio delimita como campo de acción a dos ciudades específicas del Ecuador: Tulcán e Ibarra, cuyas jurisdicciones permiten comparar los procesos de hábeas corpus realizados por parte de las Alcaldías y los jueces y juezas, del año 2006 al 2011, tomando como referencia el mes y año en el cual se aprobó la Constitución.

Previous theory and research in animals has identified the critical role that fetal testosterone (FT) plays in organizing sexually dimorphic brain development. However, to date there are no studies in humans directly testing the organizational effects of FT on structural brain development. In the current study we investigated the effects of FT on corpus callosum size and asymmetry. High-resolution structural magnetic resonance images (MRI) of the brain were obtained on 28 8-11-year-old boys whose exposure to FT had been previously measured in utero via amniocentesis conducted during the second trimester. Although there was no relationship between FT and midsaggital corpus callosum size, increasing FT was significantly related to increasing rightward asymmetry (e.g., Right>Left) of a posterior subsection of the callosum, the isthmus, that projects mainly to parietal and superior temporal areas. This potential organizational effect of FT on rightward callosal asymmetry may be working through enhancing the neuroprotective effects of FT and result in an asymmetric distribution of callosal axons. We suggest that this possible organizational effect of FT on callosal asymmetry may also play a role in shaping sexual dimorphism in functional and structural brain development, cognition, and behavior.

Rubber composites containing multiwalled carbon nanotubes have been irradiated with near-infrared light to study their reversible photomechanical actuation response. We demonstrate that the actuation is reproducible across differing polymer systems. The response is directly related to the degree of uniaxial alignment of the nanotubes in the matrix, contracting the samples along the alignment axis. The actuation stroke depends on the specific polymer being tested; however, the general response is universal for all composites tested. We conduct a detailed study of tube alignment induced by stress and propose a model for the reversible actuation behavior based on the orientational averaging of the local response. The single phenomenological parameter of this model describes the response of an individual tube to adsorption of low-energy photons; its experimentally determined value may suggest some ideas about such a response.

We report the use of molecular combing as an alignment method to obtain macroscopically oriented amyloid fibrils on planar surfaces. The aligned fibrils are studied by polarized infrared spectroscopy. This gives structural information that cannot be definitively obtained from standard infrared experiments on isotropic samples, for example, confirmation of the characteristic cross-beta amyloid core structure, the side-chain orientation from specific amino acids, and the arrangement of the strands within the fibrils, as we demonstrate here. We employed amyloid fibrils from hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) and from a model octapeptide. Our results demonstrate molecular combing as a straightforward method to align amyloid fibrils, producing highly anisotropic infrared linear dichroism (IRLD) spectra.

In this study the focus is on transfer in Brussels French, the variety of French spoken in Brussels. The methodology proposed in Jarvis (2000) and Jarvis and Pavlenko (2009) is followed to provide proof for the fact that grammatical collocations such as chercher après "to look for" are the result of contact with the source language, Brussels Dutch.
