Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have a vast field of applications, including deployment in hostile environments. Thus, the adoption of security mechanisms is fundamental. However, the extremely constrained nature of sensors and the potentially dynamic behavior of WSNs hinder the use of key management mechanisms commonly applied in modern networks. For this reason, many lightweight key management solutions have been proposed to overcome these constraints. In this paper, we review the state of the art of these solutions and evaluate them based on metrics adequate for WSNs. We focus on pre-distribution schemes well-adapted for homogeneous networks (since this is a more general network organization), thus identifying generic features that can improve some of these metrics. We also discuss some challenges in the area and future research directions. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Piezoresistive materials, materials whose resistivity properties change when subjected to mechanical stresses, are widely utilized in many industries as sensors, including pressure sensors, accelerometers, inclinometers, and load cells. Basic piezoresistive sensors consist of piezoresistive devices bonded to a flexible structure, such as a cantilever or a membrane, where the flexible structure transmits pressure, force, or inertial force due to acceleration, thereby causing a stress that changes the resistivity of the piezoresistive devices. By applying a voltage to a piezoresistive device, its resistivity can be measured and correlated with the amplitude of an applied pressure or force. The performance of a piezoresistive sensor is closely related to the design of its flexible structure. In this research, we propose a generic topology optimization formulation for the design of piezoresistive sensors where the primary aim is high response. First, the concept of topology optimization is briefly discussed. Next, design requirements are clarified, and corresponding objective functions and the optimization problem are formulated. An optimization algorithm is constructed based on these formulations. Finally, several design examples of piezoresistive sensors are presented to confirm the usefulness of the proposed method.

The premature failure of a large agglomeration machine used for the annual production of 360,000 m(3) of eucalypt fiber panels was investigated to identify the nucleation and growth mechanisms of cracking in PH stainless steel belts (126 m x 2.9 m x 3.0 mm). These belts are used to compress a cushion composed of eucalyptus fibers and glue, being the pressure transmitted from the pistons by the action of numerous case-hardening steel rolls. Examination of the belt working interfaces (belt/rolls and belt/eucalypt fibers) indicated that the main cracking was nucleated on the belt/roll interface and that there is a clear relationship between the crack nucleation and the presence of superficial irregularities, which were observed on the belt/roll working surface. Used rolls showed the presence of perimetric wear marks and 2 mu m silicon-rich encrusted particles (identified as silicon carbide). Lubricant residues contained the presence of helicoidal wires, which were originated by the release of the stainless steel cleaning brush bristles, and 15 mu m diameter metallic particles, which were generated by material detachment of the belt. The presence of foreign particles on the tribological interface contributed to an increase of the shear stresses at the surfaces and, consequently, the number of the contact fatigue crack nucleation sites in the belt/roll tribo-interface. The cracking was originated on the belt/roll interface of the stainless steel belt by a mixed rolling/slip contact fatigue mechanism, which promoted spalling and further nucleation and growth of conventional fatigue cracks. Finally, the system lubrication efficiency and the cleaning procedure should be optimised in order to increase the life expectancy of the belt. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Polyurethane composites reinforced with curaua fiber at 5, 10 and 20% mass/mass proportions were prepared by using the conventional melt-mixing method. The influence of curaua fibers on the thermal behavior and polymer cohesiveness in polyurethane matrix was evaluated by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). This specific interaction between the fibers and the hard segment domain was influenced by the behavior of the storage modulus E` and the loss modulus EaEuro(3) curves. The polyurethane PU80 is much stiffer and resistant than the other composites at low temperatures up to 70A degrees C. All samples were thermoplastic and presented a rubbery plateau over a wide temperature range above the glass transition temperature and a thermoplastic flow around 170A degrees C.

A processing route has been developed for recovering the desired lambda fiber in iron-silicon electrical steel needed for superior magnetic properties in electric motor application. The lambda fiber texture is available in directionally solidified iron-silicon steel with the < 001 > columnar grains but was lost after heavy rolling and recrystallization required for motor laminations. Two steps of light rolling each followed by recrystallization were found to largely restore the desired fiber texture. This strengthening of the < 001 > fiber texture had been predicted on the basis of the strain-induced boundary migration (SIBM) mechanism during recrystallization of lightly rolled steel from existing grains of near the ideal orientation, due to postulated low stored energies. Taylor and finite element models supported the idea of the low stored energy of the lambda fiber grains. The models also showed that the lambda fiber grains, though unstable during rolling, only rotated away from their initial orientations quite slowly.

The simultaneous use of different sensors technologies is an efficient method to increase the performance of chemical sensors systems. Among the available technologies, mass and capacitance transducers are particularly interesting because they can take advantage also from non-conductive sensing layers, such as most of the more interesting molecular recognition systems. In this paper, an array of quartz microbalance sensors is complemented by an array of capacitors obtained from a commercial biometrics fingerprints detector. The two sets of transducers, properly functionalized by sensitive molecular and polymeric films, are utilized for the estimation of adulteration in gasolines, and in particular to quantify the content of ethanol in gasolines, an application of importance for Brazilian market. Results indicate that the hybrid system outperforms the individual sensor arrays even if the quantification of ethanol in gasoline, due to the variability of gasolines formulation, is affected by a barely acceptable error. In this work, we present the simulation, fabrication and characterization of a tunable Bragg filter employing amorphous dielectric films deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique on a crystalline silicon substrate. The optical device was built using conventional microelectronic processes and consisted of fifteen periodic intervals of Si3N4 layers separated by air with appropriated thickness and lengths to produce transmittance attenuation peaks in the visible region. For this, previous simulations were realized based in the optical parameters of the dielectric film, which were extracted from ellipsometry and profilometry techniques. For the characterization of the optical interferential filter, a 633 nm monochromatic light was injected on the filter, and then the transmitted output light was collected and conducted to a detector through an optical waveguide made also of amorphous dielectric layers. Afterwards, the optical filter was mounted on a Peltier thermoelectric device in order to control the temperature of the optical device. When the temperature of filter changes, a refractive index variation is originated in the dielectric film due to the thermo-optic effect, producing a shift of attenuation peak, which can be well predicted by numerical simulations. This characteristic allows this device to be used as a thermo-optic sensor. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work a new method for crosslinking ultra-thin films with potential applications in sensor systems is proposed. The films were produced by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly using a conducting polymer, poly(o-ethoxyaniline) (POEA), alternated with a thermosetting resin, novolac-type phenolformaldehyde (PF), crosslinked by a simple thermal treatment. The PF resin served as both alternating and crosslinking agents. The films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG), desorption, doping/dedoping cycling and electrical measurements. The results showed that film architecture and crosslinking degree can be controlled by the conditions used for film deposition (number of bilayers, polymer concentration, pH, and deposition time), and crosslinking time. Moreover, this approach offers several advantages such as fast curing time and low cost, indicating that these films can be used to produce sensors with improved stability.

The present work reports the thermal annealing process, the number of layer and electrochemical process effect in the optical response quality of Bragg and microcavity devices that were applied as organic solvent sensors. These devices have been obtained by using porous silicon (PS) technology. The optical characterization of the Bragg reflector, before annealing, showed a broad photonic band-gap structure with blue shifted and narrowed after annealing process. The electrochemical process used to obtain the PS-based device imposes the limit in the number of layers because of the chemical dissolution effect. The interface roughness minimizations in the devices have been achieved by using the double electrochemical cell setup. The microcavity devices showed to have a good sensibility for organic solvent detection. The thermal annealed device showed better sensibility feature and this result was attributed to passivation of the surface devices. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents the design and implementation of an embedded soft sensor, i. e., a generic and autonomous hardware module, which can be applied to many complex plants, wherein a certain variable cannot be directly measured. It is implemented based on a fuzzy identification algorithm called ""Limited Rules"", employed to model continuous nonlinear processes. The fuzzy model has a Takagi-Sugeno-Kang structure and the premise parameters are defined based on the Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering algorithm. The firmware contains the soft sensor and it runs online, estimating the target variable from other available variables. Tests have been performed using a simulated pH neutralization plant. The results of the embedded soft sensor have been considered satisfactory. A complete embedded inferential control system is also presented, including a soft sensor and a PID controller. This paper studies the performance of fiber-cement corrugated sheets exposed to long-term weathering, exploring the effect of different environments on fiber-cement degradation. Fiber-cement corrugated sheets that had been exposed to weathering, and in place for more than 30-years, were collected from two different Brazilian cities (Sao Paulo and Criciuma). Mechanical properties (MOR, MOE and fracture toughness) were tested on samples removed from the corrugated sheets. Microstructure was evaluated by X-ray diffraction, SEM with EDS analysis, MIP and TG. The results show that the 37-year-old asbestos-cement corrugated sheets from Sao Paulo presented similar characteristics to those of the non-aged asbestos-cement readily available on the market place. Conversely, deterioration of the asbestos-cement from the industrial area of Criciuma is related to acidic attack, along with carbonation and leaching as a consequence of continued exposition to acid rain during several decades. This process resulted in higher porosity and lower mechanical strength, revealing that leaching mechanisms can have important effect on the performance of thin fiber-cement sheets. This work presents for the first time to our knowledge the fabrication and characterization of rib waveguides produced with PbO-GeO(2) (PGO) thin films. The target was manufactured using pure oxides ( 60 PbO-40 GeO(2), in wt%) and amorphous thin films were produced with the RF sputtering technique. PGO thin films present small absorption in the visible and in the near infrared and refractive index of similar to 2.0. The definition of the rib waveguide structure was made using conventional optical lithography followed by plasma etching, performed in a Reactive Ion Etching (RIE) reactor. Light propagation mode in the waveguide structure was analyzed using integrated optic simulation software. Optical loss measurements were performed to determine the propagation loss at 633 nm, for ribs with height of 70 nm and width of 3-5 mu m; experimental values around 2 dB/cm were found for the propagation loss and confirmed the theoretical calculations. The results obtained demonstrate that PGO thin films are potential candidates for application in integrated optics. Published by Elsevier B.V.

This study pursued an analysis of a modality of craftwork activity developed as an alternative for occupation and income using banana crop wastes. It is the banana fiber craftwork. The experience was developed in quilombola communities in the region of Vale do Ribeira, S (a) over tildeo Paulo State, Brazil. The correlation between the craftwork and other activities used as a source of income, like organic banana and other land crops, and rural tourism, was established. Using multifunctionality as a reference, it was intended to focus on the craftwork. activity within the dynamics of rural families in their territories, considering the economic, social, cultural and environmental issues involved in the quilombola`s activities. This permitted the evaluation of their contributions to the maintainance of the life conditions of these communities.

Expressed sequence tags derived markers have a great potential to be used in functional map construction and QTL tagging. In the present work, sugarcane genomic probes and expressed sequence tags having homology to genes, mostly involved in carbohydrate metabolism were used in RFLP assays to identify putative QTLs as well as their epistatic interactions for fiber content, cane yield, pol and tones of sugar per hectare, at two crop cycles in a progeny derived from a bi-parental cross of sugarcane elite materials. A hundred and twenty marker trait associations were found, of which 26 at both crop cycle and 32 only at first ratoon cane. A sucrose synthase derived marker was associated with a putative QTL having a high negative effect on cane yield and also with a QTL having a positive effect on Pol at both crop cycles. Fifty digenic epistatic marker interactions were identified for the four traits evaluated. Of these, only two were observed at both crop cycles.

An enantioselective liquid chromatographic method using two-phase hollow fiber liquid-phase microextraction (HF-LPME-HPLC) was developed for the determination of isradipine (ISR) enantiomers and its main metabolite (pyridine derivative of isradipine, PDI) in microsomal fractions isolated from rat liver. The analytes were extracted from 1 mL of microsomal medium using a two-phase HF-LPME procedure with hexyl acetate as the acceptor phase, 30 min of extraction, and sample agitation at 1,500 rpm. For the first time, ISR enantiomers and PDI were resolved. For this separation, a ChiralpakA (R) AD column with hexane/2-propanol/ethanol (94:04:02, v/v/v) as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 1.5 mL min(-1) was used. The column was kept at 23 A +/- 2 A degrees C. The drug and metabolite detection was performed at 325 nm and the internal standard oxybutynin was detected at 225 nm. The recoveries were 23% for PDI and 19% for each ISR enantiomer. The method presented quantification limits (LOQ) of 50 ng mL(-1) and was linear over the concentration range of 50-5,000 and 50-2,500 ng mL(-1) for PDI and each ISR enantiomer, respectively. The validated method was employed to an in vitro biotransformation study of ISR using rat liver microsomal fraction showing that (+)-(S)-ISR is preferentially biotransformed.
