Vascular occlusion training as an alternate method of gaining muscle

Training whilst under the effects of vascular occlusion has become increasingly popular due to the resultant muscle gain associated with this training technique. However, when exercising with the use of a tourniquet type device, it is possible for the pressure being applied to be inconsistent, due the constantly changing cross sectional area of the limb being occluded. This Paper describes the design of a device capable of causing vascular occlusion, but also being able to maintain a stable pressure required to create the blood flow restriction, this being able to be utilized in a sports science environment

An inquiry into the effectiveness of student generated MCQs as a method of assessment to improve teaching and learning

 In anticipation of helping students mature from passive to more active learners while engaging with the issues and concepts surrounding computer security, a student generated Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) learning strategy was designed and deployed as a replacement for an assessment task that was previously based on students providing solutions to a series of short-answer questions. To determine whether there was any educational value in students generating their own MCQs students were required to design MCQs. Prior to undertaking this assessment activity each participant completed a pre-test which consisted of 45 MCQs based on the topics of the assessment. Following the assessment activity the participants completed a post-test which consisted of the same MCQs as the pre-test. The pre and post test results as well as the post test and assessment activity results were tested for statistical significance. The results indicated that having students generate their own MCQs as a method of assessment did not have a negative effect on the learning experience. By providing a framework to the students based on the literature to support their engagement with the learning material, we believe the creation of well-structured MCQs resulted in a more advanced understanding of the relationships between the concepts of the learning material as compared with plainly answering a series of short-answer questions from a textbook. Further study is required to determine to what degree this learning strategy encouraged a deeper approach to learning.

Performing research as a method of analysis

This paper outlines a theatre-based research method undertaken as a means of analysing and representing data from a study into first-year teachers’ identity transformation. It reports on the processes employed, and the attempt by the researcher to bring together complimentary and innovative ways of interpreting interview data. Interview data from twelve teachers throughout their first year of teaching were scripted, rehearsed and performed to ‘expert’ audiences. The written script provided the basis for analysis of the teachers’ identity transformation as seen through their firsts – epiphanic and/or revelatory experiences that marked a moment of transition or transformation. The script served as an effective tool for data analysis, particularly when developing an understanding of the process of data reduction. Initially dissatisfied with the term ‘data reduction’, believing it to be counter-intuitive to ‘reduce’ the participants’ descriptions of their experiences, the process of scripting emphasised the importance of honing in on meaning, and reconciled such concerns by creating a snapshot of each participant’s first as representative of their experiences. Later, the performance revealed more nuanced understandings of the participants’ experiences as viewed through the eyes of the teacher-actors and audiences. The actors selected to represent the experiences of the first-year teachers in the performance were also teachers. The process of casting, and the teacher-actors’ experiences of rehearsing and performing the work ‘The First Time’ over the past two years will also be discussed. This paper concludes with some of the feedback from various audiences of both the performance and the written thesis from arts- and non-arts-based practitioners. Some feedback contends that the theatre-based method was less rigorous than other more ‘traditional’ methods. Such feedback prompts the consideration of weighing the benefits of employing theatre-based research against the risk of alienating some members of the audiences (both of the performance and the page). A collaborative group method of inclusive research

Funding bodies in Australia and the United Kingdom require research on issues that affect the lives of people with intellectual disability to be inclusive. Debate continues about the nature and benefits of inclusive research, which has become an umbrella term encompassing a broad spectrum of approaches.

The establishment of the Judicial Appointments Commission in Malaysia to improve the constitutional method of appointing the judges of the superior courts : a critical study

The Judicial Appointments Commission was established in Malaysia in 2009 to ensure unbiased selection of judicial candidates for the consideration of the Prime Minister, who has the final say regarding the appointment of judges to the superior courts. But the provisions concerning Prime Minister’s power to appoint the majority of the members of the Commission and his unfettered power of removing four of the five appointed members without assigning any reason, have calculatedly been devised for ensuring the selection of judicial candidates having right political patronage in accordance with the covert wishes of the Prime Minister. Furthermore, the Prime Minister’s power of rejecting the Commission’s recommendations of multiple candidates renders the undertaking of a lengthy process of selection unproductive and useless. Thus the Judicial Appointments Commission has become a superfluous body with an ineffective modus operandi to attain the stipulated objectives of improving and complementing the constitutional method of appointing judges to the superior courts. Since the Federal Constitution of Malaysia has not empowered the Parliament to enact a law providing for the establishment of a Judicial Appointments Commission, it also appears that the Judicial Appointments Commission Act 2009 is an invalid piece of legislation.

On the use of 'shortcuts' in the method of continuous variation (Job's method)

The use of modified Job plot methodology provides a quick and easy means for evaluating host-guest stoichiometry and requires less material than the original method. In this short paper, the results of a recent anion recognition study using thiourea-functionalised norbornanes and [n]polynorbornanes are presented. A significant difference between the plots constructed using the original and modified method was observed and, as such, caution is advised when the modified Job's method is solely used for the determination of host-guest stoichiometry.

A generalization of judds method of out-steady-state comparisons in perfect foresight models

We show that Judd (1982)’s method can be applied to any finite system, contrary to what he claimed in 1987. An example shows how to employ the technic to study monetary models in presence of capital accumulation.

Method of numerical correction of errors occasioned by delay of records during the monitoring of environmental variables of interest for animal production

As condições de ambiente térmico e aéreo, no interior de instalações para animais, alteram-se durante o dia, devido à influência do ambiente externo. Para que análises estatísticas e geoestatísticas sejam representativas, uma grande quantidade de pontos distribuídos espacialmente na área da instalação deve ser monitorada. Este trabalho propõe que a variação no tempo das variáveis ambientais de interesse para a produção animal, monitoradas no interior de instalações para animais, pode ser modelada com precisão a partir de registros discretos no tempo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi desenvolver um método numérico para corrigir as variações temporais dessas variáveis ambientais, transformando os dados para que tais observações independam do tempo gasto durante a aferição. O método proposto aproximou os valores registrados com retardos de tempo aos esperados no exato momento de interesse, caso os dados fossem medidos simultaneamente neste momento em todos os pontos distribuídos espacialmente. O modelo de correção numérica para variáveis ambientais foi validado para o parâmetro ambiental temperatura do ar, sendo que os valores corrigidos pelo método não diferiram pelo teste Tukey, a 5% de probabilidade dos valores reais registrados por meio de dataloggers.

The influence of preparation method of OC1OC6-PPV films on the photo-oxidation process

Poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) derivatives are well known for their applications in polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs). PPV derivatives are highly susceptible to photo-oxidation though, which is mainly caused by the scission of the vinyl double bond on the polymer backbone. In this work, we show that Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films are less degraded than cast films of a PPV derivative (OC1OC6-PPV). Both films had similar thickness (similar to 50 nm) to allow for a more realistic comparison. Degradation was monitored with UV-vis and FTIR spectroscopies. The results indicated that cast films were completely degraded in ca. 400 min, while LB took longer time, i.e. about four times the values for the cast films. The differences can be attributed to the more compact morphology in the LB than in the cast films. With a compact morphology the diffusion of oxygen in the LB film is hampered and this causes a delay in the degradation process. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Signal-flow graphs: Direct method of reduction and MATLAB implementation

Block diagrams and signal-flow graphs are used to represent and to obtain the transfer function of interconnected systems. The reduction of signal-flow graphs is considered simpler than the reduction of block diagrams for systems with complex interrelationships. Signal-flow graphs reduction can be made without graphic manipulations of diagrams, and it is attractive for a computational implementation. In this paper the authors propose a computational method for direct reduction of signal-flow graphs. This method uses results presented in this paper about the calculation of literal determinants without symbolic mathematics tools. The Cramer's rule is applied for the solution of a set of linear equations, A program in MATLAB language for reduction of signal-flow graphs with the proposed method is presented.
