The standard free energy of formation of titanium boride (TiB2) Was measured by the Electro Motive Force (EMF) method (by using yttria doped thoria (YDT) as the solid electrolyte). Two galvanic cells viz. Cell (I): Pt, TiB2 (s), TiO2 (s), B (s) vertical bar YDT vertical bar NiO (s), Ni (s), Pt and cell (II): Pt, TiB2 (s), TiO2 (s), B (s) vertical bar YDT vertical bar FeO (s). Fe (s), Pt were constructed in order to determine the Delta(f)G degrees, of TiB2. Enthalpy increments on TiB2 were measured by using inverse drop calorimetry over the temperature range 583-1769 K. The heat capacity, entropy and the free energy function have been derived from these experimental data in the temperature range 298-1800 K. The mean value of the standard enthalpy of formation of TiB2 (Delta H-f(298)degrees (TiB2)) was obtained by combining these Delta(f)G degrees, values and the free energy functions of TiB2 derived from the drop calorimetry data. The mean values of Delta H-f(298)degrees (TiB2) derived from the Delta(f)G degrees, data obtained from cell I and II were -322 +/- 1.2 kJ mol(-1) and -323.3 +/- 2.1 kJ mol(-1), respectively. These values were found to be in very good agreement with the assessed data. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

STOAT has been extensively used for the dynamic simulation of an activated sludge based wastewater treatment plant in the Titagarh Sewage Treatment Plant, near Kolkata, India. Some alternative schemes were suggested. Different schemes were compared for the removal of Total Suspended Solids (TSS), b-COD, ammonia, nitrates etc. A combination of IAWQ#1 module with the Takacs module gave best results for the existing scenarios of the Titagarh Sewage Treatment Plant. The modified Bardenpho process was found most effective for reducing the mean b-COD level to as low as 31.4 mg/l, while the mean TSS level was as high as 100.98 mg/l as compared to the mean levels of TSS (92 62 mg/l) and b-COD (92.0 mg/l) in the existing plant. Scheme 2 gave a better scenario for the mean TSS level bringing it down to a mean value of 0.4 mg/l, but a higher mean value for the b-COD level at 54.89 mg/l. The Scheme Final could reduce the mean TSS level to 2.9 mg/l and the mean b-COD level to as low as 38.8 mg/l. The Final Scheme looks to be a technically viable scheme with respect to the overall effluent quality for the plant. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Microstructure and microtexture evolution during static annealing of a hot-extruded AZ21 magnesium alloy was studied. Apart from fine recrystallized equiaxed grains and large elongated deformed grains, a new third kind of abnormal grains that are stacked one after the other in a row parallel to the extrusion direction were observed. The crystallographic misorientation inside these grains was similar to that of the fine recrystallized grains. The large elongated grains exhibited significant in-grain misorientation. A self-consistent mechanistic model was developed to describe the formation of these grain morphologies during dynamic recrystallization (DRX). The texture of pre-extruded material, although lost in DRX, leaves a unique signature which manifests itself in the form of these grain morphologies. The origin of abnormal stacked grains was associated with slow nucleation in pre-extruded grains of a certain orientation. Further annealing resulted in large secondary recrystallized grains with occasional extension twins. (c) 2009 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A modified form of Green's integral theorem is employed to derive the energy identity in any water wave diffraction problem in a single-layer fluid for free-surface boundary condition with higher-order derivatives. For a two-layer fluid with free-surface boundary condition involving higher-order derivatives, two forms of energy identities involving transmission and reflection coefficients for any wave diffraction problem are also derived here by the same method. Based on this modified Green's theorem, hydrodynamic relations such as the energy-conservation principle and modified Haskind–Hanaoka relation are derived for radiation and diffraction problems in a single as well as two-layer fluid.

Thin films of ZrO2 were prepared by reactive magnetron sputtering. Annealing of the films exhibited a drastic change in the properties due to improved crystallinity and packing density. The root mean square roughness of the sample observed from atomic force microscope is about 5.75 nm which is comparable to the average grain size of the thin film which is about 6 nm obtained from X-ray diffraction. The film annealed at 873 K exhibits an optical band gap of around 4.83 eV and shows +4 oxidation state of zirconium indicating fully oxidized zirconium, whereas higher annealing temperatures lead to oxygen deficiency in the films and this is reflected in their properties. A discontinuity in the imaginary part of the AC conductivity was observed in the frequency range of tens of thousands of Hz, where as, the real part does not show such behavior.

BTK-2, a 32 residue scorpion toxin initially identified in the venom of red Indian scorpion Mesobuthus tamulus was cloned, overexpressed and purified using Cytochrome 155 fusion protein system developed in our laboratory. The synthetic gene coding for the peptide was designed taking into account optimal codon usage by Escherichia coli. High expression levels of the fusion protein enabled facile purification of this peptide. The presence of disulfide bonded isomers, occurring as distinctly populated states even in the fusion protein, were separated by gel filtration chromatography. The target peptide was liberated from the host protein by Tev protease cleavage and subsequent purification was achieved using RP-HPLC methods. Reverse phase HPLC clearly showed the presence of at least two isomeric forms of the peptide that were significantly populated. The oxidative folding of BTK-2 was achieved under ambient conditions during the course of purification. Structural characterization of the two forms, by solution homonuclear and heteronuclear NMR methods, has shown that these two forms exhibit significantly different structural properties, and represent the natively folded and a "misfolded" form of the peptide. The formation of properly folded BTK-2 as a major fraction without the use of in vitro oxidative refolding methods clearly indicate the versatility of the Cytochrome b(5) fusion protein system for the efficient production of peptides for high resolution NMR studies.

Grewia tiliaefolia is widely used in traditional Indian medicines to cure jaundice, biliousness, dysentery and the diseases of blood. Bioassay-guided fractionation of methanolic extract of the G. tiliaefolia bark has resulted in the isolation of D-erythro-2-hexenoic acid gamma-lactone (EHGL) and gulonic acid gamma-lactone (GAGL). Hepatoprotective activity of the methanolic extract and the isolated constituents were evaluated against CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. The treatment with methanolic extract, EHGL and GAGL at oral doses of 100, 150 and 60 mg/kg respectively with concomitant CCl4 intraperitoneal injection (I ml/kg) significantly reduced the elevated plasma levels of aminotransferases, alkaline phosphatase and the incidence of liver necrosis compared with the CCl4-injected group without affecting the concentrations of serum bilirubin and hepatic markers. EHGL and GAGL significantly inhibited the elevated levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and glutathione in liver homogenates. Histology of the liver tissues of the extract and isolated constituents treated groups showed the presence of normal hepatic cords, absence of necrosis and fatty infiltration as similar to the normal control. The results revealed that the hepatoprotective activity of EHGL is significant as similar to the standard drug silymarin. To clarify the influence of the extract and isolated constituents on the protection of oxidative-hepatic damage, we examined in vitro antioxidant properties of the test compounds. The extract and the constituents showed significant free radical scavenging activity. These results suggest that the extract as well as the constituents could protect the hepatocytes from CCl4-induced liver damage perhaps, by their anti-oxidative effect on hepatocytes, hence eliminating the deleterious effects of toxic metabolites from CCl4, (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Reactive Pulsed Laser Deposition is a single step process wherein the ablated elemental metal reacts with a low pressure ambient gas to form a compound. We report here a Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry based analytical methodology to conduct minimum number of experiments to arrive at optimal process parameters to obtain high quality TiN thin film. Quality of these films was confirmed by electron microscopic analysis. This methodology can be extended for optimization of other process parameters and materials. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Surface texture of harder mating surfaces plays an important role during sliding against softer materials and hence the importance of characterizing the surfaces in terms of roughness parameters. In the present investigation, basic studies were conducted using inclined pin-on-plate sliding tester to understand the surface texture effect of hard surfaces on coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation. A tribological couple made of a super purity aluminium pin against steel plate was used in the tests. Two surface parameters of steel plates, namely roughness and texture, were varied in the tests. It was observed that the transfer layer formation and the coefficient of friction along with its two components, namely, the adhesion and plowing, are controlled by the surface texture and are independent of surface roughness (R-a). Among the various surface roughness parameters, the average or the mean slope of the profile was found to explain the variations best. Under lubricated conditions, stick-slip phenomena was observed, the amplitude of which depends on the plowing component of friction. The presence of stick-slip motion under lubricated conditions could be attributed to the molecular deformation of the lubricant component confined between asperities. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. In this experimental study, the dry sliding wear and two-body abrasive wear behaviour of graphite filled carbon fabric reinforced epoxy composites were investigated. Carbon fabric reinforced epoxy composite was used as a reference material. Sliding wear experiments were conducted using a pin-on-disc wear tester under dry contact condition. Mass loss was determined as a function of sliding velocity for loads of 25, 50, 75, and 100 N at a constant sliding distance of 6000 m. Two-body abrasive wear experiments were performed under multi-pass condition using silicon carbide (SiC) of 150 and 320 grit abrasive papers. The effects of abrading distance and different loads have been studied. Abrasive wear volume and specific wear rate as a function of applied normal load and abrading distance were also determined. The results show that in dry sliding wear situations, for increased load and sliding velocity, higher wear loss was recorded. The excellent wear characteristics were obtained with carbon-epoxy containing graphite as filler. Especially, 10 wt.% of graphite in carbon-epoxy gave a low wear rate. A graphite surface film formed on the counterface was confirmed to be effective in improving the wear characteristics of graphite filled carbon-epoxy composites. In case of two-body abrasive wear, the wear volume increases with increasing load/abrading distance. Experimental results showed the type of counterface (hardened steel disc and SiC paper) material greatly influences the wear behaviour of the composites. Wear mechanisms of the composites were investigated using scanning electron microscopy. Wear of carbon-epoxy composite was found to be mainly due to a microcracking and fiber fracture mechanisms. It was found that the microcracking mechanism had been caused by progressive surface damage. Further, it was also noticed that carbon-epoxy composite wear is reduced to a greater extent by addition of the graphite filler, in which wear was dominated by microplowing/microcutting mechanisms instead of microcracking.

Abrasion and slurry erosion behaviour of chromium-manganese iron samples with chromium (Cr) in the range similar to 16-19% and manganese (Mn) at 5 and 10% levels have been characterized for hardness followed by microstructural examination using optical and scanning electron microscopy. Positron lifetime studies have been conducted to understand the defects/microporosity influence on the microstructure. The samples were heat treated and characterized to understand the structural transformations in the matrix. The data reveals that hardness decreased with increase in Mn content from 5 to 10% in the first instance and then increase in the section size in the other case, irrespective of the sample conditions. The abrasion and slurry erosion losses show increase with increase in the section size as well as with increase in Mn content. The positron results show that as hardness increases from as-cast to heat treated sample, the positron trapping rate and hence defect concentration showed opposite trend as expected. So a good correlation between defects concentration and the hardness has been observed. These findings also corroborate well with the microstructural features obtained from optical and scanning electron microscopy. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

A conventional magnesium alloy, AZ91D, and two creep resistant magnesium alloys, developed for powertrain applications, MRI 153M and MRI 230D, are prepared by high pressure die casting. These alloys are tested for their creep behaviour in the continuous manner, as is the Current practice, and in the interrupted manner, which represents the real life Situation more closely. It is observed that the interrupted creep tests give rise to a primary creep appearing at the beginning of each cycle resulting in a higher average strain rate than that encountered in the continuous creep tests. Further, the shorter the cycle time, higher is the average strain rate in the interrupted creep tests. A higher average strain rate will give rise to a higher strain over the same period. This is attributed to the recovery taking place during the cooling and heating between two cycles. The effect of additional precipitation during interrupted creep tests depends on the nature of the precipitates. The additional precipitation of beta phase during the cooling and heating between two cycles increases the steady state strain rate in the AZ91D and MRI 153M alloys. whereas the additional precipitation of C36 phase during the cooling and heating between two cycles decreases the steady state strain rate in the MRI 230D alloy. Studies on the electrical switching behavior of melt quenched bulk Si15Te85-xSbx glasses have been undertaken in the composition range (1 <= x <= 10), in order to understand the effect of Sb addition on the electrical switching behavior of Si15Te85-x base glass. It has been observed that all the Si15Te85-xSbx glasses studied exhibit a smooth memory type switching. Further, the switching voltages are found to decrease almost linearly with Sb content, which indicates that the metallicity of the dopant plays a dominant role in this system compared to network connectivity/rigidity. The thickness dependence of switching voltage (V-th) indicates a clear thermal origin for the switching mechanism. The temperature variation of switching voltages reveals that the Si15Te85-xSbx glasses studied have a moderate thermal stability. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The fossil fuel divestment movement has undergone explosive growth over the last few years - expanding from encouraging educational institutions to adopt ethical investment policies to focusing upon cities, pension funds and philanthropic charities. The fossil fuel divestment movement has attained global ambitions - challenging sovereign wealth funds and national governments to engage in fossil fuel divestment, and pushing for fossil fuel divestment at international climate talks - such as the Paris Climate Summit in 2015. By exploring and analysing a key campaign to 'Divest Norway', this chapter considers the efforts to globalise and internationalise the fossil fuel divestment campaign. Part 1 explores the origins of the fossil fuel divestment movement, and the application of such strategies in a variety of contexts. Part 2 looks at the campaign to divest Norway's sovereign wealth fund of fossil fuel investments. There has been much discussion as to whether the bold decision of Norway to engage in coal divestment will encourage and inspire other sovereign wealth funds to engage in fossil fuel divestment. The conclusion considers the efforts to introduce fossil fuel divestment as a policy initiative for nation states as a policy option in international climate law.
