A flow system designed with solenoid micro-pumps is proposed for the determination of paraquat in natural waters. The procedure involves the reaction of paraquat with dehydroascorbic acid followed by spectrophotometric measurements. The proposed procedure minimizes the main drawbacks related to the standard chromatographic procedure and to flow analysis and manual methods with spectrophotometric detection based on the reaction with sodium dithionite, i.e. high solvent consumption and waste generation and low sampling rate for chromatography and high instability of the reagent in the spectrophotometric procedures. A home-made 10-cm optical-path flow cell was employed for improving sensitivity and detection limit. Linear response was observed for paraquat concentrations in the range 0.10-5.0 mg L-1. The detection limit (99.7% confidence level), sampling rate and coefficient of variation (n = 10) were estimated as 22 mu g L-1, 63 measurements per hour and 1.0%, respectively. Results of determination of paraquat in natural water samples were in agreement with those achieved by the chromatographic reference procedure at the 95% confidence level. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. An improved flow-based procedure is proposed for turbidimetric sulphate determination in waters. The flow system was designed with solenoid micro-pumps in order to improve mixing conditions and minimize reagent consumption as well as waste generation. Stable baselines were observed in view of the pulsed flow characteristic of the systems designed with solenoid micro-pumps, thus making the use of washing solutions unnecessary. The nucleation process was improved by stopping the flow prior to the measurement, thus avoiding the need of sulphate addition. When a 1-cm optical path flow cell was employed, linear response was achieved within 20-200 mg L(-1), described by the equation S = -0.0767 + 0.00438C (mg L(-1)), r = 0.999. The detection limit was estimated as 3 mg L(-1) at the 99.7% confidence level and the coefficient of variation was 2.4% (n = 20). The sampling rate was estimated as 33 determinations per hour. A long pathlength (100-cm) flow cell based on a liquid core waveguide was exploited to increase sensitivity in turbidimetry. Baseline drifts were avoided by a periodical washing step with EDTA in alkaline medium. Linear response was observed within 7-16 mg L(-1), described by the equation S = -0.865 + 0.132C (mg L(-1)), r = 0.999. The detection limit was estimated as 150 mu g L(-1) at the 99.7% confidence level and the coefficient of variation was 3.0% (n = 20). The sampling rate was estimated as 25 determinations per hour. The results obtained for freshwater and rain water samples were in agreement with those achieved by batch turbidimetry at the 95% confidence level. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

A flow system designed with solenoid micro-pumps is introduced for spectrophotometric determination of total tannins based on the Folin- Denis reaction. The procedure minimizes the main drawbacks related to the AOAC batch procedure, i.e. interferences from reducing species in the samples, high reagent consumption and waste generation, and low sampling rate. Linear response was observed for tannic acid concentrations in the range 2-100 mg L-1, with a detection limit (99.7% confidence level) of 0.3 mg L-1. The sampling rate and coefficient of variation (n = 10) were estimated as 75 measurements per hour and 1.1%, respectively. Results of determination of total tannin in tea, beer and wine samples were in agreement with those achieved by the batch reference procedure at the 95% confidence level. In comparison to the batch procedure, the reagent consumption and effluent generation were 83 and 60-fold lower, respectively.

Salbutamol is a bronchodilator whose use is restricted due to its anabolic effects. A flow-based procedure for salbutamol determination based on the inhibition of chemiluminescence of the luminol/hypochlorite system was developed. A flow cell constructed with a liquid-core waveguide was employed to constrain the emitted radiation, minimizing losses during transport to detector. Linear response was observed within 2.5 x 10(-6) and 1.0 x 10(-5) mol L-1 with a detection limit estimated as 1 x 10(-7) mol L-1 at the 99.7% confidence level. The coefficient of variation (n = 20), sampling rate, and luminol consumption per determination were estimated as 2.8%, 164 determinations h(-1), and 50 mu g, respectively. Results for pharmaceutical samples were in agreement with those obtained by reference procedures at the 95% confidence level.

We herein propose transfer of the two monotypic genera Globibunus (type-species G. rubrofemoratus Roewer, 1912) and Rivetinus (type-species R. minutus Roewer, 1919) to the subfamily Zamorinae (Agoristenidae) and Ramonus (type-species R. conifrons Roewer, 1956), previous placed in Agoristenidae, to the Prostygninae (Cranaidae) based on several characteristics of male genitalia. These transfers are corroborated by a cladistic analysis, which also recovered the three currently recognized agoristenid subfamilies.

Aim: To evaluate the sexual functioning of breast cancer patients post mastectomy and its association with their quality of life, the personal characteristics of women and their partners, breast reconstruction, cancer staging and adjuvant therapies. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in a University hospital located in the SouthEast of Brazil. A total of 100 women were included in the study. The parameters evaluated were sexual functioning, which was assessed based on the Sexual Quotient Female Version (SQ-F), quality of life (QoL), evaluated by the Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short Form (SF-36), cancer staging, breast reconstruction, adjuvant therapies and the personal characteristics of patients (age, years of study and years of marriage) and their partners (age, years of study). Results: The majority (40.48%) of women had an unfavorable to regular SQ-F score. A significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) was found between the SQ-F score and years of education (p = 0.03), and the following SF-36 domains: functional capacity (p = 0.03), vitality (p = 0.06), emotional limitations (p = 0.00) and mental health (p = 0.03). A significant negative correlation was found between SQ-F score and the age of the partners (p = 0.03). SQ-F mean value was significantly higher (p = 0.04) among women who underwent breast reconstruction. Conclusions: Women with low educational level, who have older partners, and who did not have a breast reconstruction should receive special attention with respect to their sexuality, and the effects of mastectomy on the sexuality of patients should be assessed. Oncology nurses are best qualified to recognize issues related to sexuality and quality of life, and can offer specific and meaningful support for breast cancer patients. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Aim. To compare the measurements of women`s pelvic floor musculature strength (PFMS) during pregnancy and postpartum period. Background. Pregnancy and childbirth can have an influence on the muscles and pelvic floor and can cause morbidities of women`s genito-urinary tract. Design. A prospective cohort study. Methods. There were included 226 primigravidae women, attended by community health services in the city of Itapecerica da Serra, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The participants were followed in four stages: (1) within 12 weeks of pregnancy; (2) between 36-40 weeks of pregnancy; (3) within 48 hours after childbirth; (4) 42-60 days after childbirth. Data were collected from February 2007-August 2008. The pelvic floor musculature strength was evaluated by perineometry and digital vaginal palpation in stages 1, 2 and 4. The final sample included 110 women who completed all four stages of the study. Results. The pelvic floor musculature strength of the women did not change significantly during pregnancy or after delivery (anova: p = 0 center dot 78). In all three examined stages, a low-intensity pelvic floor musculature strength was prevalent (in mmHg: stage 1 = 15 center dot 9; stage 2 = 15 center dot 2, stage 4 = 14 center dot 7), with scores from 0-3 on the Oxford scale. The pelvic floor musculature strength did not differ in relation to maternal age, skin colour, conjugal status, dyspareunia, stool characteristics, type of delivery, or conditions of the perineum. An interaction between maternal nutritional state and newborn`s weight may affect the pelvic floor musculature strength (manova: p = 0 center dot 04). Conclusion. Pregnancy and childbirth did not reduce significantly pelvic floor musculature strength. The perineometry and digital vaginal palpation used to assess the pelvic floor musculature strength were well accepted by the women. Relevance to clinical practice. In clinical practice, digital vaginal palpation is effective for supporting the diagnosis of urinary, intestinal and sexual dysfunctions. Perineometry use is particularly important together with the performance of perineal exercises with biofeedback in the treatment these disorders.

Hybrid matrices of polysiloxane-polyvinyl alcohol (POS-PVA) were prepared by sol-gel technique using different concentrations of the organic component (polyvinyl alcohol, PVA) in the synthesis medium. The goal was to prepare carriers for immobilizing enzyme by taking into consideration properties as hardness, mean pore diameter, specific surface area and pore size distribution. The matrices were activated with sodium metaperiodate to render functional groups for binding the lipase from Candida rugosa, used here as a study model. Results showed that low proportion of PVA gave POS-PVA with low surface area and pore volume, although with higher hardness. The chemical activation decreased the pore volume and increased the pore size with a decrease on the surface area of about 60-75%. The matrices for enzyme immobilization were chosen considering the best combination of high surface area and hardness. Thus, the POS-PVA prepared with 5.56 x 10(-5) M of PVA with a surface area of 123 m(2)/g and hardness of 71 HV (50 gf 30 s) was shown to be suitable to immobilize the lipase, with an immobilization yield of about 40%. This work aims to evaluate the fermentability of cellulosic hydrolysates obtained by enzymatic saccharification of sugarcane bagasse pretreated by hydrothermal processing using Candida guilliermondii FTI 20037 yeast. The inoculum was obtained from yeast culture in a medium containing glucose as a carbon source supplemented with rice bran extract, CaCl(2)center dot 2H(2)O and (NH(4))(2)SO(4) in 50 mL Erlenmeyer flasks, containing 20 mL of medium, initial 5.5 pH under agitation of an orbital shaker (200 rpm) at 30A degrees C for 24 h. The cellulosic hydrolysates, prior to being used as a fermentation medium, were autoclaved for 15 min at 0.5 atm and supplemented with the same nutrients employed for the inoculum, except the glucose, using the same conditions for the inoculum, but with a period of 48 h. Preliminary results showed the highest consumption of glucose (97%) for all the hydrolysates, at 28 h of fermentation. The highest concentration of ethanol (20.5 g/L) was found in the procedure of sugarcane bagasse pretreated by hydrothermal processing (195A degrees C/10 min in 20 L reactor) and delignificated with NaOH 1.0% (w/v), 100A degrees C, 1 h in 500 mL stainless steel ampoules immersed in an oil bath.

Brewer`s spent grain (BSG) was evaluated for bleached pulp production. Two cellulose pulps with different chemical compositions were produced by soda pulping: one from the original raw material and the other from material pretreated by dilute acid. Both of them were bleached by a totally chlorine-free sequence performed in three stages, using 5% hydrogen peroxide in the two initial, and a 0.25 N NaOH solution in the last one. Chemical composition, kappa number, viscosity, brightness and yield of bleached and unbleached pulps were evaluated. The high hemicellulose (28.4% w/w) and extractives (5.8% w/w) contents in original BSG affected the pulping and bleaching processes. However, soda pulping of acid pretreated BSG gave a cellulose-rich pulp (90.4% w/w) with low hemicellulose and extractives contents (7.9% w/w and < 3.4% w/w, respectively), which was easily bleached achieving a kappa number of 11.21, viscosity of 3.12 cp, brightness of 71.3%, cellulose content of 95.7% w/w, and residual lignin of 3.4% w/w. Alkaline and oxidative delignification of acid pretreated BSG was found as an attractive approach for producing high-purity, chlorine-free cellulose pulp.

Glyoxalated soy flour adhesives for wood particleboard added with a much smaller proportion of glyoxalated lignin or tannin and without any addition of either formaldehyde or formaldehyde-based resin are shown to yield results satisfying the relevant standard specifications for interior wood boards. Adhesive resin formulations in which the total content of natural material is either 70 or 80% of the total resin solids content gave good results. The resins comprising 70% by weight of natural material can be used in a much lower proportion on wood chips and can afford pressing times fast enough to be significant under industrial panel pressing conditions. The best formulation of all the ones tried was the one based on glyoxalated precooked soy flour (SG), to which a condensed tannin was added in water solution and a polymeric isocyanate (pMDI), where the proportions of the components SG/T/pMDI was 54/16/30 by weight. Currently, several research groups and industries are studying applications for the residues from agrobusiness, other than burning them. Thinking about a better use for the sugarcane bagasse, this study aims to obtain membranes of cellulose acetate composite with oxidized lignin, both isolated from sugarcane bagasse. Thus, we obtain a product with higher commercial value, from a natural fiber, which has applications in water and effluent treatment, and further contributes to the maintenance of the environment. Macromolecular components of bagasse were separated by steam explosion pre-treatment and a basic treatment with NaOH. The pulp obtained was bleached and acetylated, and subsequently membranes of this cellulose acetate were synthesized, incorporating oxidized lignin to these membranes in order to increase the metal retention capacity of them. The acetylated material was analyzed by IR, confirming acetylation. Degree of substitution was determined by volumetry, resulting in a diacetate to the MA I condition and a triacetate to MA II condition. It was observed that for the material with a lower degree of acetylation, it has better incorporation of oxidized lignins. SEM, showed membranes with dense structure. Tests were conducted to evaluate metal retention, and the average capacity of removal was 16% Cu(+2) in steady-state experiments.
