Proximity-dependent trans-biotinylation by the Escherichia coli biotin ligase BirA mutant R118G (BirA*) allows stringent streptavidin affinity purification of proximal proteins. This so-called BioID method provides an alternative to the widely used co-immunoprecipitation (co-IP) to identify protein-protein interactions. Here, we used BioID, on its own and combined with co-IP, to identify proteins involved in nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD), a post-transcriptional mRNA turnover pathway that targets mRNAs that fail to terminate translation properly. In particular, we expressed BirA* fused to the well characterized NMD factors UPF1, UPF2 and SMG5 and detected by liquid chromatography-coupled tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) the streptavidin-purified biotinylated proteins. While the identified already known interactors confirmed the usefulness of BioID, we also found new potentially important interactors that have escaped previous detection by co-IP, presumably because they associate only weakly and/or very transiently with the NMD machinery. Our results suggest that SMG5 only transiently contacts the UPF1-UPF2-UPF3 complex and that it provides a physical link to the decapping complex. In addition, BioID revealed among others CRKL and EIF4A2 as putative novel transient interactors with NMD factors, but whether or not they have a function in NMD remains to be elucidated.

The DNA breakage effect of the anticancer agent 3,6-diaziridinyl-2,5-bis(carboethoxyamino)-1,4-benzoquinone (AZQ, NSC-182986) on bacteriophage PM2 DNA was investigated using agarose gel electrophoresis. AZQ caused both single-stranded and double-stranded breaks after reduction with NaBH(,4), but it was not active in the native state. At 120 (mu)M, it degraded 50% of the closed circular form I DNA into 40% form II DNA (single-stranded break) and 10% form III DNA (double-stranded break). It produced a dose-response breakage between 1 (mu)M and 320 (mu)M. The DNA breakage exhibited a marked pH dependency. At 320 (mu)M, AZQ degraded 80% and 60% of form I DNA at pH 4 and 10 respectively, but none between pH 6 to 8. The DNA breakage at physiologic pH was greatly enhanced when 10 (mu)M cupric sulfate was included in the incubation mixture. The DNA strand scission was inhibited by catalase, glutathione, KI, histidine, Tiron, and DABCO. These results suggest that the DNA breakage may be caused by active oxygen metabolites including hydroxyl free radical. The bifunctional cross-linking activity of reduced AZQ on isolated calf thymus DNA was investigated by ethidium fluorescence assay. The cross-linking activity exhibited a similar pH dependency; highest in acidic and alkaline pH, inactive under neutral conditions. Using the alkaline elution method, we found that AZQ induced DNA single-stranded breaks in Chinese hamster ovary cells treated with 50 (mu)M of AZQ for 2 hr. The single-stranded break frequencies in rad equivalents were 17 with 50 (mu)M and 140 with 100 (mu)M of AZQ. In comparison, DNA cross-links appeared in cells treated with only 1 to 25 (mu)M of AZQ for 2 hr. The cross-linking frequencies in rad equivalents were 39 and 90 for 1 and 5 (mu)M of AZQ, respectively. Both DNA-DNA and DNa-protein cross-links were induced by AZQ in CHO cells as revealed by the proteinas K digestion assay. DNA cross-links increased within the first 4 hr of incubation in drug-free medium and slightly decreased by 12 hr, and most of the cross-links disappeared after cells were allowed to recovered for 24 hr.^ By electrochemical analysis, we found that AZQ was more readily reduced at acidic pH. However, incubation of AZQ with NaBH(,4) at pH 7.8 or 10, but not at 4, produced superoxide anion. The opening of the aziridinyl rings of AZQ at pH 4 was faster in the presence of NaBH(,4) than in its absence; no ring-opening was detected at pH 7.8 regardless of the inclusion of NaBH(,4). . . . This study was a descriptive analysis of 437 influenza A positive inpatients and outpatients during the five month period between September, 2009 and January, 2010. The objective of the study was to describe the epidemiological trends of the total influenza A positive population and more specifically the clinical features of patients hospitalized with influenza A at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston, Texas from September 2009 through January 2010. Eligible cases were included if they tested positive for influenza A test using the rapid antigen test and/or rRT-PCR. Hospitalized cases were included based on the laboratory confirmation of influenza A as well as hospital admission for at least 24 hours. Data was collected from medical record abstraction and included patient demographics, clinical history and history of chronic disease. Clinical findings in the differential diagnosis that led to laboratory-confirmation of influenza A as well as course of treatment during the hospital admission were summarized. Finally, co-morbid conditions charted during the hospital visit were reviewed and evaluated for associations with influenza A complications. During the study period, forty-eight patients were included in the study of which 27 tested positive for the H1N1 subtype. Females were more likely to be hospitalized than men. The median age of all patients admitted to St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital with influenza A was 42. The distribution for admitted cases was 15 White, 15 Black, and 18 Hispanic. Patients with co-morbid disease constituted 81% of the admissions for Influenza A. The presence of an underlying medical condition remains a risk factor for both seasonal and H1N1 influenza. Although respiratory conditions such as asthma and COPD are commonly associated with complications of seasonal influenza, patients with metabolic disorders such as kidney disease and/or diabetes were admitted more frequently (58%) during the study period. The patients in the study also of a much younger age than the age that is usually associated with complications of influenza infection, i.e. no patients greater than 65 years of age were admitted with a diagnosis of influenza A. Lower infection rates among elderly populations were similarly reported in other studies of influenza during the same time period. Older patient populations may benefit from antibodies to previous H1N1 strains that have circulated during the twentieth century, whereas younger age groups lack these exposures.^

INTERACTION BETWEEN BRK AND HER2 IN BREAST CANCER Midan Ai, Ph.D. Supervisory Professor: Zhen Fan, M.D. Breast tumor kinase (Brk) is a nonreceptor protein-tyrosine kinase that is highly expressed in approximately two thirds of breast cancers but is not detectable or is expressed at very low levels in normal mammary epithelium. Brk plays important roles in promoting proliferation, survival, invasion, and metastasis of breast cancer cells, but the mechanism(s) of which remain largely unknown. Recent studies showed that Brk is frequently co-overexpressed with human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2) and is physically associated with HER2 in breast cancer. The mechanism needs to be determined. In my studies, I found that high expression of HER2 is correlated with high expression of Brk in breast cancer cell lines. Silencing HER2 expression via RNA interference in HER2 over-expressed breast cancer cells resulted in Brk protein decrease and overexpression of HER2 in HER2 low-expressed breast cancer cells up-regulated Brk expression. The mechanism study indicated that overexpression of HER2 increased Brk protein stability. Brk was degraded through a Ca2+-dependent protease pathway involving calpain and HER2 stimulated Brk expression via inhibiting calpain activity. Calpastatin is a calpain endogenous inhibitor and the calpain-calpastatin system has been implicated in a number of cell physiological functions. HER2 restrained calpain activation via up-regulating calpastatin expression and HER2 downstream signaling, MAPK pathway, was involved in the regulation. Furthermore, silencing of Brk expression by RNA interference in HER2-overexpressing breast cancer cells decreased HER2-mediated cell proliferation, survival, invasion/metastasis potential and increased cell sensitivity to HER2 kinase inhibitor, lapatinib, treatment, indicating that Brk plays important roles in regulating and mediating the oncogenic functions of HER2. The Stat3 pathway played important roles in Brk mediated cell survival and invasion/metastasis in the context of HER2-overexpressing breast cancer cells. However, transgenic mice with inducible expression of constitutively active Brk (CA) in the mammary epithelium failed to develop malignant change in the mammary glands after Brk induction for 15 months which indicated that expression of Brk protein alone was not sufficiently to induce spontaneous breast tumor. Bitransgenic mice with co-expression of HER2/neu and inducible expression of Brk in the mammary epithelium developed multifocal mammary tumors, but there were no significant difference in the tumor occurring time, tumor size, tumor weight and tumor multiplicity between the mouse group with co-expression of Brk and HER2/neu and the mouse group with HER2/neu expression only.

Time variable gravity fields, reflecting variations of mass distribution in the system Earth is one of the key parameters to understand the changing Earth. Mass variations are caused either by redistribution of mass in, on or above the Earth's surface or by geophysical processes in the Earth's interior. The first set of observations of monthly variations of the Earth gravity field was provided by the US/German GRACE satellite mission beginning in 2002. This mission is still providing valuable information to the science community. However, as GRACE has outlived its expected lifetime, the geoscience community is currently seeking successor missions in order to maintain the long time series of climate change that was begun by GRACE. Several studies on science requirements and technical feasibility have been conducted in the recent years. These studies required a realistic model of the time variable gravity field in order to perform simulation studies on sensitivity of satellites and their instrumentation. This was the primary reason for the European Space Agency (ESA) to initiate a study on ''Monitoring and Modelling individual Sources of Mass Distribution and Transport in the Earth System by Means of Satellites''. The goal of this interdisciplinary study was to create as realistic as possible simulated time variable gravity fields based on coupled geophysical models, which could be used in the simulation processes in a controlled environment. For this purpose global atmosphere, ocean, continental hydrology and ice models were used. The coupling was performed by using consistent forcing throughout the models and by including water flow between the different domains of the Earth system. In addition gravity field changes due to solid Earth processes like continuous glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) and a sudden earthquake with co-seismic and post-seismic signals were modelled. All individual model results were combined and converted to gravity field spherical harmonic series, which is the quantity commonly used to describe the Earth's global gravity field. The result of this study is a twelve-year time-series of 6-hourly time variable gravity field spherical harmonics up to degree and order 180 corresponding to a global spatial resolution of 1 degree in latitude and longitude. In this paper, we outline the input data sets and the process of combining these data sets into a coherent model of temporal gravity field changes. The resulting time series was used in some follow-on studies and is available to anybody interested.

Este estudio tiene como objetivo estudiar la influencia de los factores del estilo de vida y funcionalidad sobre la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud (CVRS) en población con salud comprometida. Método: 139 sujetos formaron parte de este estudio divididos en cuatro grupos de enfermedades co-morbidas (sobrepeso-obesidad, diabetes, hipertensión e hiperlipidemias). El estilo de vida se determinó mediante la encuesta FANTASTIC, calidad de vida relacionada con la salud mediante el SF-36 y la funcionalidad con los Test Sentar y Lenvantar (TSL) e Ir y Venir (TIV). Los resultados nos muestras un estilo de vida excelente influye positivamente sobre la Compuesta Salud Física y Compuesta Salud Mental (p < 0.05) en relación estilo de vida inferiores (bueno, regular y bajos) y no influye sobre la capacidad funcional (TSL y TIV). Además, diferentes condiciones de enfermedades co-morbidas (SO vs SOD vs SODT vs ODTH) parecen no afectar la CVRS, y si la capacidad funcional (p < 0.05). Conclusiones: niveles excelentes de estilo de vida influyen positivamente sobre la CVRS específicamente sobre los aspectos físicos y mentales. Las pruebas funcionales de TSL y TIV parecen ser útiles para diferencias los niveles funcionales en población con salud comprometida o población con enfermedades co-morbidas

Abundance variations of six Pliocene species of discoasters have been analyzed over the time interval from 1.89 to 2.95 Ma at five contrasting sites in the North Atlantic: Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites 552 (56°N) and 607 (41°N) and Ocean Drilling Program 658 (20°N), 659 (18°N), and 662 (1°S). A sampling interval equivalent to approximately 3 k.y. was used. Total Discoaster abundance showed a reduction with increasing latitude and from the effects of upwelling. This phenomenon is most obvious in Discoaster brouweri, the only species that survived over the entire time interval studied. Prior to 2.38 Ma, Discoaster pentaradiatus and Discoaster surculus are important components of the Discoaster assemblage: Discoaster pentaradiatus increases slightly with latitude up to 41°N, and its abundance relative to D. brouweri increases up to 56°N; D. surculus increases in abundance with latitude and with upwelling conditions relative to both D. brouweri and D. pentaradiatus and is dominant to the latter species at upwelling Site 658 and at the highest latitude sites. Discoaster asymmetricus and Discoaster tamalis appear to increase in abundance with latitude relative to D. brouweri. Many of the abundance changes observed appear to be connected with the initiation of glaciation in the North Atlantic at 2.4 Ma. The long-term trend of decreasing Discoaster abundance probably reflects the fall of sea-surface temperatures. This trend of cooling is overprinted by short-term variations that are probably associated with orbital forcing. Evidence for the astronomical elements of eccentricity and obliquity periodicities were found at all sites; however, only at Sites 607, 659, and 662 were precessional periodicities detected. Furthermore, only at Site 659 was precession found to be dominant to obliquity. Abundance peaks of individual species were found to cross-correlate between sites. The distinct abundance fluctuations observed especially in the tropics suggest that temperature is not the only factor responsible for this variation. This study reveals for the first time the importance of productivity pressure on the suppression of Discoaster abundance.

On Leg 96 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP), holes were drilled in Orca and Pigmy basins on the northern Gulf of Mexico continental slope and on the Mississippi Fan. The holes on the fan encountered interbedded sand, silt, and mud deposited extremely rapidly, most during late Wisconsin glacial time. Pore-water chemistry in these holes is variable, but does not follow lithologic changes in any simple way. Both Ca and SO4 are enriched in the pore water of many samples from the fan. Two sites drilled in the prominent central channel of the middle fan show rapid SO4 reduction with depth, whereas two nearby sites in overbank deposits show no sulfate reduction for 300 m. Calcium concentration decreases as SO4 is depleted and Li follows the same pattern. Strontium, which like Li, is enriched in samples enriched in Ca, does not decrease with SO4 and Ca. Potassium in the pore water decreases with depth at almost all sites. Sulfate reduction was active at the two basin sites and, as on the fan, this resulted in calcium carbonate precipitation and a lowering of pore water Ca, Mg, and Li. The Orca Basin site was drilled through a brine pool of 258? salinity. Pore-water salinity decreases smoothly with depth to 50 m and remains well above normal seawater values to the bottom of the hole at about 90 m. This suggests constant sedimentation under anoxic hypersaline conditions for at least the last 50,000 yr.

Carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of authigenic carbonate nodules or layers reflect the diagenetic conditions at the time of nodule growth. The shallowest samples of carbonate nodules and dissolved inorganic carbon of pore water samples beneath the sulfate reduction zone (0-160 meters below seafloor [mbsf]) at Site 1165 have extremely negative d13C values (-50 per mil and -62 per mil, respectively). These negative d13C values indicate nodule formation in association with anaerobic methane oxidation coupled with sulfate reduction. The 34S of residual sulfate at Site 1165 shows only minor 34S enrichment (+6 per mil), even with complete sulfate reduction. This small degree of apparent 34S enrichment is due to extreme "open-system" sulfate reduction, with sulfate abundantly resupplied by diffusion from overlying seawater. Ten calcite nodules from Site 1165 contain minor quartz and feldspar and have d13C values ranging from -49.7 per mil to -8.2 per mil. The nodules with the most negative d13C values currently are at depths of 273 to 350 mbsf and must have precipitated from carbonate largely derived from subsurface anaerobic methane oxidation. The processes of sulfate reduction coupled with methane oxidation in sediments of Hole 1165B are indicated by characteristic concentration and isotopic (d34S and d13C) profiles of dissolved sulfate and bicarbonate. Three siderite nodules from Site 1166 contain feldspar and mica and one has significant carbonate-apatite. The siderite has d13C values ranging from -15.3 per mil to -7.6 per mil. These siderite nodules probably represent early diagenetic carbonate precipitation during microbial methanogenesis.

開発途上国が長期的に貧困削減を実現していくためには、貧困削減に貢献する形で経済成長をすることが必要であり、貧困削減に親和的な経済成長がPro-Poor Growthと呼ばれている。現在までのところ、Pro-Poor Growth研究は、どの国のどの時期の経済成長が貧困削減に大きく貢献したかを問うものが多数を占めており、何がpro-poor growthをもたらすか、に着目した研究は少ない。その少ない研究の多くは農業や農村経済の役割に期待するものであるが、本稿では、既にある程度の貧困削減を遂げた東・東南アジアの経験に鑑み、低賃金の国において労働集約的製造業品を輸出することで貧困層の賃金や雇用機会を飛躍的に伸張させる可能性について考察した。バングラデシュ、カンボジアといった国々は既に縫製業がその役割を果たしており、これまでの東・東南アジアの貧困削減パターンが現在の東南アジアや南アジアの最貧国でも踏襲される可能性が十分にある。

El proyecto que se presenta a continuación recoge la adaptación de una Central Térmica de carbón al cumplimiento de la DIRECTIVA 2010/75/UE DEL PARLAMENTO EUROPEO Y DEL CONSEJO de 24 de noviembre de 2010 sobre las emisiones industriales. La Central sobre la que se realiza el proyecto tiene un grupo térmico de carbón suscritico refrigerado por agua, con una potencia a plena carga de 350 MWe y de 190 MWe a mínimo técnico. Genera 1 090 t/h de vapor a 540 °C y 168 kg/cm2 funcionando a plena carga. Actualmente las emisiones de NOx son de 650 mg/m3, (condiciones normales, seco, 6 % O2). El objeto del proyecto es reducir estas emisiones a un valor máximo de 200 mg/m3 en las mismas condiciones. El proyecto analiza detalladamente las condiciones actuales de operación de la instalación en cuanto a combustible utilizado, horas de funcionamiento, condiciones climáticas y producción. Se analiza así mismo, todas las técnicas disponibles en mercado para la reducción del NOx, diferenciando entre medidas primarias (actúan sobre los efectos de formación) y secundarias (limpieza de gases). Las medidas primarias ya están implementadas en la central, por tanto, el proyecto plantea la reducción con medidas secundarias. De las medidas secundarias analizadas se ha seleccionado la instalación de un Reactor de Reducción Selectiva Catalítica (Reactor SCR). Tras un análisis de los diferentes reactores y catalizadores disponibles se ha seleccionado un reactor de configuración High-dust, una disposición de catalizador en 3 capas más 1, cuyos componentes están basados en óxidos metálicos (TiO2, V2O5, WO3) y estructura laminar. Se ha buscado la instalación del reactor para operar a una temperatura inferior a 450 °C. Como agente reductor se ha seleccionado NH3 a una dilución del 24,5 %. El proyecto recoge también el diseño de todo el sistema de almacenamiento, evaporación, dilución e inyección de amoniaco. El resultado del proyecto garantiza una concentración en los gases de salida por la chimenea inferior 180 mg/m3(n) de NOx. La reducción del NOx a los límites establecidos, tienen un coste por MWh neto generado para la central, trabajando 60 % a plena carga y 40 % a mínimo técnico y una amortización de 10 años, de 4,10 €/MWh. ABSTRACT The following project shows the compliance adjustment of a coal-fired power station to the 2010/75/EU Directive of the European Parliament and Council 24th November 2010 on industrial emissions. The project is based on a power station with a subcritical thermal coal unit, cooled with water, with a maximum power of 350 MWe and a technical minimum of 190 MWe. It produces 1 090 t/h of steam at 540 ° C and 168 kg/cm2 operating under full load. Currently, NOx emissions are 650 mg / m3 (normal conditions, dry, 6% O2). The project aims to reduce these emissions to a maximum value of 200 mg / m3 under the same conditions. The project analyses in detail the current operating conditions of the system in terms of fuel used, hours of operation, climatic conditions and production. In addition, it also analyses every available technique of NOx reduction on the market, distinguishing between primary (acting on the effects of formation) and secondary measures (gas cleaning). Primary measures are already implemented in the plant, thus proposing reduction with secondary measures. Among the secondary measures analyzed, it has been selected to install a Selective Catalytic Reduction Reactor (SCR Reactor). Having researched the different reactors and catalysts available, for the reactor has been selected High-dust configuration, an arrangement of catalyst in 3 layers plus 1, whose components are based on metal oxides (TiO2, V2O5, WO3) and laminar structure. The reactor has been sought facility to operate at a temperature below 450 ° C. NH3 diluted to 24,5 % has been selected as reducing agent. The project also includes the design of the entire storage system, evaporation, dilution and ammonia injection. The results of the project ensure a gas concentration in the lower chimney exit below 180 mg / m3(n) NOx. The reduction of NOx to the established limits has a cost per net MWh generated in the plant, working at 60% of full load and at 40% of technical minimum, with an amortization of 10 years, 4,10 € / MWh.

El incremento de la contaminación acústica se ha convertido en un problema medioambiental lo cual ha generado un aumento en la demanda del aislamiento de los edificios para lograr el confort acústico. Existen métodos de medición de aislamiento acústico a ruido aéreo de fachadas bajo ensayo “in situ” pero no para techos. El objetivo de esta investigación consiste en determinar el aislamiento acústico de prototipos de techos ecológicos multicapas adaptando la metodología recomendada por normas internacionales. Se propusieron cuatro prototipos de techos con distintos materiales naturales como especies vegetales y sustratos de fibra de coco, superpuestos sobre un techo base liviano. Al sustrato se le varió su espesor de 10 a 20 cm, sus condiciones seca o húmeda y su densidad: 100%, 66% y 33% fibra de coco. En los resultados se determinó que las especies vegetales no aportaron aislamiento, pero al incrementar el espesor y densidad del sustrato mejoró el aislamiento sonoro. También se determinó que el aislamiento acústico en condición seca fue mejor que en condición húmeda. Se planteó una metodología para determinar el aislamiento acústico a ruido aéreo en techos bajo ensayo “in situ” empleando el método global con altavoz, ésta se estructuró en tres partes: la primera describe el módulo experimental y la plataforma tecnológica; la segunda aborda procedimientos para medir los niveles de presión sonora, niveles de ruido de fondo y los tiempos de reverberación, en bandas de frecuencia de tercios de octava; en la tercera se explica el cálculo de los promedios de estos parámetros, así como también la diferencia de niveles estandarizada, el índice de reducción sonora aparente con sus valores globales y su incertidumbre. Así mismo, se determinó un algoritmo de predicción del aislamiento acústico, analizando los valores obtenidos en las mediciones “in situ” como la Diferencia de nivel estandarizada ponderada y el Índice ponderado de reducción sonora, los cuales se relacionaron con el peso y el espesor de los materiales de las diferentes multicapas. A través de un análisis de regresión se establecieron modelos para predecir la Diferencia de nivel estandarizada y el Índice de reducción sonora aparente en bandas de octavas. Los resultados del modelo propuesto son cercanos a los datos medidos “in situ”. Por otra parte, se realizaron mediciones térmicas en un módulo experimental y otro de referencia en tres períodos del día. En el módulo experimental se construyeron los prototipos de techos ecológicos y en el de referencia un techo de construcción tradicional, se compararon los resultados de ambos módulos y su interacción con la temperatura exterior. Se detectó que las temperaturas internas del módulo experimental en condición seca tienden a mantener sus valores durante todo el día, en horas de la mañana sus valores son superiores a los del módulo de referencia y temperatura exterior. Al mediodía y en la tarde las temperaturas internas del módulo experimental son inferiores a las del módulo de referencia, incrementándose esta última a medida que aumenta temperatura exterior. Finalmente, a partir de las mediciones “in situ” se realizaron cuatro modelos de correlación acústica-térmica, los tres primeros relacionando la temperatura y el nivel de presión sonora en tres momentos del día, en la tarde se aprecia que a medida que aumenta la temperatura aumentan los niveles de presión sonora. En el cuarto modelo se estableció una correlación acústica-térmica entre la resistencia térmica de los materiales de las multicapas con su índice de reducción sonora, obteniéndose un coeficiente de correlación moderado. La presente investigación plantea retos desde el punto de vista ambiental, permite cuantificar el aislamiento acústico de los techos y mejorar la calidad de vida en áreas urbanas; el empleo de los materiales de procedencia local como los utilizados fomenta el respeto por la naturaleza y producen un menor impacto ambiental. ABSTRACT Sound contamination increase has generated a raise in insulation demand of buildings in order to achieve a sound comfort, and this has become into an environmental problem. There are measurements methods for air borne soundproofing in facades through “in situ” test but there are not for roofs. The purpose of this research is to determine sound insulation of multilayer green roof prototypes following the methodology suggested by international standards. Four prototypes of roofs with different types of vegetation and overlapped coconut fiber substrates over a light roof were proposed. Thickness of substrate varied from 10 to 20 cm, as well as its dry a humid condition and its density: 100%, 66% y 33% of coconut fiber. Results determined that vegetation did not contribute to insulation but when increasing substrate’s thickness and density, sound insulation was improved. Likewise, it was determined that sound insulation in dry condition was greater than in humid condition. A methodology to determine airborne sound insulation in roofs through “in situ” test using a speaker global method was stated. This was structured in three parts: the first part describes the experimental module and the technological platform; the second one establishes the procedures to measure sound pressure levels; levels of background noise and time of reverberation in frequency bands of thirds of octave, and in the third part, averages of these parameters, as well as the difference of standardized levels, the apparent sound reduction with its global values and uncertainty were calculated. Likewise, a prediction algorithm of sound insulation was determined by analyzing values obtained in “in-situ” measures such as the difference of weighted standardized level and the weighted index of sound reduction which they were related to weight and thickness of different multilayer materials. Models to predict the standardized level difference and the apparent sound reduction index in bands of octaves were established by a regression analysis. Results for the proposed model are close to data measured “in situ”. On the other hand, thermal measures were done in an experimental module, as well as in another as for reference in three periods of the day. Green prototypes roofs were built in the experimental module and a traditional roof were built in the reference one. Results of both modules were compared as well as the interaction with outside temperature. Internal temperatures of the experimental module in dry condition tend to keep their values throughout the day; in the morning, its values are higher than those of the reference module and external temperatures. Finally, four models of sound-thermal correlation were done from measures “in situ”. The first three were related to temperature and sound pressure level in three moments of the day. In the afternoon, it is observed that when temperature increases, sound pressure levels increases too. In the fourth model, a sound and thermal correlation was established between thermal resistance of multilayer materials with their sound reduction index, and a moderated correlation coefficient was obtained. This research poses challenges from the environmental point of view, and it allows quantifying sound insulation of roofs as well as improving quality of life in urban areas; the use of local vegetation promotes respect for nature and it produces a smaller environmental impact as well.
