In this paper, I examine how language policy acts as a means of both empowering the Welsh language and theminority language worker and as a means of exerting power over them. For this purpose, the study focuses on a particular site: private sector businesses in Wales. Therein, I trace two major discursive processes: first, the Welsh Government’s national language policy documents that promote corporate bilingualism and bilingual employees as value-added resources; second, the practice and discourse of company managers who sustain or appropriate such promotional discourses for creating and promoting their own organisational values. By drawing on concepts from governmentality, critical language policy and discourse studies, I show that promoting bilingualism in business is characterised by local and global governmentalities. These not only bring about critical shifts in valuing language as symbolic entities attached to ethnonational concerns or as promotional objects that bring material gain. Language governmentalities also appear to shape new forms of ‘languaging’ the minority language worker as selfgoverning, and yet, governed subjects who are ultimately made responsible for ‘owning’ Welsh.

A wide range of non-destructive testing (NDT) methods for the monitoring the health of concrete structure has been studied for several years. The recent rapid evolution of wireless sensor network (WSN) technologies has resulted in the development of sensing elements that can be embedded in concrete, to monitor the health of infrastructure, collect and report valuable related data. The monitoring system can potentially decrease the high installation time and reduce maintenance cost associated with wired monitoring systems. The monitoring sensors need to operate for a long period of time, but sensors batteries have a finite life span. Hence, novel wireless powering methods must be devised. The optimization of wireless power transfer via Strongly Coupled Magnetic Resonance (SCMR) to sensors embedded in concrete is studied here. First, we analytically derive the optimal geometric parameters for transmission of power in the air. This specifically leads to the identification of the local and global optimization parameters and conditions, it was validated through electromagnetic simulations. Second, the optimum conditions were employed in the model for propagation of energy through plain and reinforced concrete at different humidity conditions, and frequencies with extended Debye's model. This analysis leads to the conclusion that SCMR can be used to efficiently power sensors in plain and reinforced concrete at different humidity levels and depth, also validated through electromagnetic simulations. The optimization of wireless power transmission via SMCR to Wearable and Implantable Medical Device (WIMD) are also explored. The optimum conditions from the analytics were used in the model for propagation of energy through different human tissues. This analysis shows that SCMR can be used to efficiently transfer power to sensors in human tissue without overheating through electromagnetic simulations, as excessive power might result in overheating of the tissue. Standard SCMR is sensitive to misalignment; both 2-loops and 3-loops SCMR with misalignment-insensitive performances are presented. The power transfer efficiencies above 50% was achieved over the complete misalignment range of 0°-90° and dramatically better than typical SCMR with efficiencies less than 10% in extreme misalignment topologies.

Analogous to sunspots and solar photospheric faculae, which visibility is modulated by stellar rotation, stellar active regions consist of cool spots and bright faculae caused by the magnetic field of the star. Such starspots are now well established as major tracers used to estimate the stellar rotation period, but their dynamic behavior may also be used to analyze other relevant phenomena such as the presence of magnetic activity and its cycles. To calculate the stellar rotation period, identify the presence of active regions and investigate if the star exhibits or not differential rotation, we apply two methods: a wavelet analysis and a spot model. The wavelet procedure is also applied here to study pulsation in order to identify specific signatures of this particular stellar variability for different types of pulsating variable stars. The wavelet transform has been used as a powerful tool for treating several problems in astrophysics. In this work, we show that the time-frequency analysis of stellar light curves using the wavelet transform is a practical tool for identifying rotation, magnetic activity, and pulsation signatures. We present the wavelet spectral composition and multiscale variations of the time series for four classes of stars: targets dominated by magnetic activity, stars with transiting planets, those with binary transits, and pulsating stars. We applied the Morlet wavelet (6th order), which offers high time and frequency resolution. By applying the wavelet transform to the signal, we obtain the wavelet local and global power spectra. The first is interpreted as energy distribution of the signal in time-frequency space, and the second is obtained by time integration of the local map. Since the wavelet transform is a useful mathematical tool for nonstationary signals, this technique applied to Kepler and CoRoT light curves allows us to clearly identify particular signatures for different phenomena. In particular, patterns were identified for the temporal evolution of the rotation period and other periodicity due to active regions affecting these light curves. In addition, a beat-pattern vii signature in the local wavelet map of pulsating stars over the entire time span was also detected. The second method is based on starspots detection during transits of an extrasolar planet orbiting its host star. As a planet eclipses its parent star, we can detect physical phenomena on the surface of the star. If a dark spot on the disk of the star is partially or totally eclipsed, the integrated stellar luminosity will increase slightly. By analyzing the transit light curve it is possible to infer the physical properties of starspots, such as size, intensity, position and temperature. By detecting the same spot on consecutive transits, it is possible to obtain additional information such as the stellar rotation period in the planetary transit latitude, differential rotation, and magnetic activity cycles. Transit observations of CoRoT-18 and Kepler-17 were used to implement this model.

Este trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar los saberes y las perspectivas docentes en torno al currículum de una escuela pública rural de Enseñanza Fundamental del Río Grande do Norte considerando, sobre todo, los debates sobre la Educación en el Campo en Souza (2006, 2007), Arroyo, Caldart y Molina (2004) y Fernandes (2002, 2004). La propuesta surge como alternativa para la elaboración de proposiciones curriculares para mejorar la calidad de la enseñanza en esas escuelas, según las características específicas de la educación escolar en contexto rural, en la expectativa de que esta sea un elemento para el desarrollo local y global de las comunidades rurales. La fundamentación teórica para responder a la investigación, se respalda en las consideraciones sobre los saberes docentes teniendo en cuenta las lecturas de Gauthier (1998), Tardif (2011), Pimenta (2009), Paulo Freire (1996), Nóvoa (2007, 2008) y las referencias sobre el currículum crítico y postcrítico discutidas en Giroux (1997), Silva (1999), Moreira (2008), Moreira y Candau (2003, 2010), Sacristán (2000) e Sacristán e Gómez (1998). La referencia empírica se constituye de una escuela pública de una comunidad rural en el municipio de São José de Mipibu-RN. Los sujetos sociales de la investigación son cuatro profesores(as) que trabajan en los años iniciales de la Enseñanza Fundamental. Se recurrió a la investigación etnográfica fundamentada en los estudios de Lüdke y André (1986), Sandín Estebán (2010) y Gil (2007), una vez que el análisis del cotidiano escolar, bajo el mirar etnográfico, a través de los procedimientos de la observación participante y de la entrevista semiestructurada, permite el contacto directo del investigador con el ambiente en estudio, registra el no documentado, y percibe la institución escolar como espacio cultural, caracterizando varios grados de acomodación, contestación y resistencia inmersos en una pluralidad de lenguajes y objetivos conflictivos. Las observaciones hechas en la clase y las enseñanzas de los profesores y profesoras permiten comprender que los saberes y perspectivas docentes, a partir de las experiencias del profesorado, lanzan expectativas socioprofesionales sobre la docencia e intensifican el papel fundamental del docente en la construcción de los saberes, de las prácticas y concepciones del mundo rural, de la escuela rural y de la función social de esta. Los hallazgos de la investigación con los profesores sobre el contexto rural apuntan para la necesidad en problematizar verdades socialmente construidas, bajo la orientación de una racionalidad que reconozca el espacio rural como productor de la existencia. A partir de los análisis construidos, se pudo reconocer la necesidad de una política de formación conceptual específica para el profesorado de las escuelas rurales, anclada en el concepto históricocultural del rural. También se reitera la urgencia permanente y continuada en revisar los procesos de formación, vividos en la escuela, que contemplen las peculiaridades de la enseñanza rural, en una visión contrahegemónica del urbanocentrismo, a partir de un análisis crítico sobre el marco legal de la Educación del Campo.

Globalizing the Sculptural Landscape of Isis and Sarapis Cults in Roman Greece,” asks questions of cross-cultural exchange and viewership of sculptural assemblages set up in sanctuaries to the Egyptian gods. Focusing on cognitive dissonance, cultural imagining, and manipulations of time and space, I theorize ancient globalization as a set of loosely related processes that shifted a community's connections with place. My case studies range from the 3rd century BCE to the 2nd century CE, including sanctuaries at Rhodes, Thessaloniki, Dion, Marathon, Gortyna, and Delos. At these sites, devotees combined mainstream Greco-Roman sculptures, Egyptian imports, and locally produced imitations of Egyptian artifacts. In the last case, local sculptors represented Egyptian subjects with Greco-Roman naturalistic styles, creating an exoticized visual ideal that had both local and global resonance. My dissertation argues that the sculptural assemblages set up in Egyptian sanctuaries allowed each community to construct complex narratives about the nature of the Egyptian gods. Further, these images participated in a form of globalization that motivated local communities to adopt foreign gods and reinterpret them to suit local needs.

I begin my dissertation by examining how Isis and Sarapis were represented in Greece. My first chapter focuses on single statues of Egyptian gods, describing their iconographies and stylistic tendencies through examples from Corinth and Gortyna. By comparing Greek examples with images of Sarapis, Isis, and Harpokrates from around the Mediterranean, I demonstrate that Greek communities relied on globally available visual tropes rather than creating site or region-specific interpretations. In the next section, I examine what other sources viewers drew upon to inform their experiences of Egyptian sculpture. In Chapter 3, I survey the textual evidence for Isiac cult practice in Greece as a way to reconstruct devotees’ expectations of sculptures in sanctuary contexts. At the core of this analysis are Apuleius’ Metamorphoses and Plutarch’s De Iside et Osiride, which offer a Greek perspective on the cult’s theology. These literary works rely on a tradition of aretalogical inscriptions—long hymns produced from roughly the late 4th century B.C.E. into the 4th century C.E. that describe the expansive syncretistic powers of Isis, Sarapis, and Harpokrates. This chapter argues that the textual evidence suggests that devotees may have expected their images to be especially miraculous and likely to intervene on their behalf, particularly when involved in ritual activity inside the sanctuary.

In the final two chapters, I consider sculptural programs and ritual activity in concert with sanctuary architecture. My fourth chapter focuses on sanctuaries where large amounts of sculpture were found in underground water crypts: Thessaloniki and Rhodes. These groups of statues can be connected to a particular sanctuary space, but their precise display contexts are not known. By reading these images together, I argue that local communities used these globally available images to construct new interpretations of these gods, ones that explored the complex intersections of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman identities in a globalized Mediterranean. My final chapter explores the Egyptian sanctuary at Marathon, a site where exceptional preservation allows us to study how viewers would have experienced images in architectural space. Using the Isiac visuality established in Chapter 3, I reconstruct the viewer's experience, arguing that the patron, Herodes Atticus, intended his viewer to inform his experience with the complex theology of Middle Platonism and prevailing elite attitudes about Roman imperialism.

Throughout my dissertation, I diverge from traditional approaches to culture change that center on the concepts of Romanization and identity. In order to access local experiences of globalization, I examine viewership on a micro-scale. I argue that viewers brought their concerns about culture change into dialogue with elements of cult, social status, art, and text to create new interpretations of Roman sculpture sensitive to the challenges of a highly connected Mediterranean world. In turn, these transcultural perspectives motivated Isiac devotees to create assemblages that combined elements from multiple cultures. These expansive attitudes also inspired Isiac devotees to commission exoticized images that brought together disparate cultures and styles in an eclectic manner that mirrored the haphazard way that travel brought change to the Mediterranean world. My dissertation thus offers a more theoretically rigorous way of modeling culture change in antiquity that recognizes local communities’ agency in producing their cultural landscapes, reconciling some of the problems of scale that have plagued earlier approaches to provincial Roman art.

These case studies demonstrate that cultural anxieties played a key role in how viewers experienced artistic imagery in the Hellenistic and Roman Mediterranean. This dissertation thus offers a new component in our understanding of ancient visuality, and, in turn, a better way to analyze how local communities dealt with the rise of connectivity and globalization.

Nosso objetivo tem sido mostrar o contexto local e global, favorecendo o processo de formaçao e atuaçao profissional. Considerando o corpo como ambiente, construímos aproximaçoes entre o ritmo orgânico corporal e o ritmo do ambiente, possibilitando a percepçao de que somos ambiente e cultura. A cidade se transformou em espaço e tempo de criaçao. Produzimos conhecimentos que emergem no movimento, em práticas corporais como caminhadas e pedaladas pelos bairros, pelas regioes centrais e arredores; no contato com pessoas de outras instituiçoes; no processo de vivenciar diferentes universos socioambientais; nos modos de habitar; na valorizaçao e problematizaçao dos lugares em que vivemos, moramos, estudamos, trabalhamos; no encontro com culturas, dentro e fora dos espaços institucionais de ensino. Climate-driven change represents the cumulative effect of global through local-scale conditions, and understanding their manifestation at local scales can empower local management. Change in the dominance of habitats is often the product of local nutrient pollution that occurs at relatively local scales (i.e. catchment scale), a critical scale of management at which global impacts will manifest. We tested whether forecasted global-scale change [elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) and subsequent ocean acidification] and local stressors (elevated nutrients) can combine to accelerate the expansion of filamentous turfs at the expense of calcifying algae (kelp understorey). Our results not only support this model of future change, but also highlight the synergistic effects of future CO2 and nutrient concentrations on the abundance of turfs. These results suggest that global and local stressors need to be assessed in meaningful combinations so that the anticipated effects of climate change do not create the false impression that, however complex, climate change will produce smaller effects than reality. These findings empower local managers because they show that policies of reducing local stressors (e.g. nutrient pollution) can reduce the effects of global stressors not under their governance (e.g. ocean acidification). The connection between research and government policy provides an example whereby knowledge (and decision making) across local through global scales provides solutions to some of the most vexing challenges for attaining social goals of sustainability, biological conservation and economic development.

The main objective of Leg 82 of the Glomar Challenger was to document mantle heterogeneity in the vicinity of, and away from, a so-called hot spot: the Azores Triple Junction. One of the geochemical tools that permits, at least in part, the recognition of mantle heterogeneities uses hygromagmaphile elements, those elements that have an affinity for the liquid. This tool is presented in terms of an extended Coryell-Masuda plot, which incorporates within the rare earth elements the hygromagmaphile transition elements Th, Ta, Zr, Hf, Ti, Y, and V. The extended Coryell-Masuda plot is used to summarize our knowledge of mantle heterogeneity along the ridge axis at zero-age. It is also used by choosing those hygromagmaphile elements that can be analyzed on board by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry to give preliminary information on the enriched or depleted character of recovered samples. Shore-based results, which include analyses of most of the hygromagmaphile elements measured either by X-ray spectrometry or neutron activation analysis, confirm the shipboard data. From the point of view of comparative geochemistry, the variety of basalts recovered during Leg 82 provides a good opportunity to test and verify the classification of the hygromagmaphile elements. Analyses from Leg 82 provide new data about the relationship between extended rare earth patterns (enriched or depleted) that can be estimated either by La/Sm ratio or Nb/Zr (or Ta/Hf) ratios: samples from Hole 556 are depleted (low Nb/Zr ratio) but have a high 206Pb/ 204Pb (19.5) ratio; in Hole 558 a moderately enriched basalt unit with a La/Sm (= Nb/Zr) ratio (chondrite normalized) of 2 has a high 206Pb/204Pb (20) ratio. One of the most interesting results of Leg 82 lies in the crossing patterns of extended Coryell-Masuda plots for basalts from the same hole. This result enhances the notion of local mantle heterogeneity versus regional mantle heterogeneity and is confirmed by isotope data; it also favors a model of short-lived, discrete magma chambers. The data tend to confirm the Hayes Fracture Zone as a southern limit for the influence of Azores-type mantle. Nevertheless, north of the Hayes Fracture Zone, the influence of a plumelike mantle source is not simple and probably requires an explanation more complex than a contribution from a single fixed hot spot.

Through qualitative interviews and examination of textual sources, this essay investigates the gendered, class and cultural subjectivities of transnational, highly-educated Chinese men living and working in London. Narrative analysis of the interviews of two participants suggests that they exhibit hybrid “bricolage masculinities,” which incorporate elements from Western educational and corporate cultures, and also appropriate concepts and practices from the Confucian tradition of moral self-cultivation. A discussion of contemporary texts that support the revival of Confucian masculinities illuminates the discursive context in which the participants’ ethical self-fashionings take place. The study argues that the cosmopolitan yet culturally embedded masculinities of the participants are suggestive of how professional Chinese men, as they step onto the world stage, seek to insert themselves more advantageously into local and global power relations of gender, class and nation.

The purpose of this article has been made through a Marxist analysis of the US film "Captain Phillips" (PaulGreengrass, 2013), based on a true story. I have found how the evolution of capitalism in the West continuesto consolidate the belief reified in a historical and geographical superiority of the political and socioeconomicwestern models regarding Africa and Asia lowers models. At the same time, through categories like dialecticalmaterialism, criticism of diffusionist theory and application of cognitive mapping to large geopoliticalspaces located in most poor areas of the world, I have realized a remark about currently being articulatingthe political unconscious of working class in rich countries and the poor in poor countries, establishing arelationship between the ideological representation that takes an individual from his historical reality (ona scale that moves from local to global), and how he has developed a mental ability to escape of the responsibilityto make a critical review of what's happening around him in all areas. Finally, through physicalspace captured in the film, I have realized a materialist critique of globalized business process that takesplace through the carriage of goods, outlining spatial and cognitively limits of the mentality of our time, bothamong "winners"as among the "losers", based on the spatial movement of capital.

This article analyses the context of production and local situations of appropriation and resignification related to the folk song “Fire on Animaná” as well as the request and mobilization (“The animanazo”) provoked by this song in order to examine different mechanisms and foundations by which a population connect with an event from its community past, identifying with this and taking it in a specific way. In this article we combine discourse analysis of the song and of interviews to participants in this event with the reconstruction —through ethnographic observation— of how to use this song.

En la actualidad, las organizaciones de la industria de la moda en la región de Caldas presentan dificultades en gestión estratégica y gestión de innovación, y el conjugar estas dos variables se hace necesario para que puedan lograr la competitividad que les permita permanecer y crecer en el mercado local y global. Es por esto que en este proyecto el propósito es identificar las estrategias de gestión de innovación en las empresas del sector textil, confección, diseño y moda de la Región Centro Sur de Caldas y así saber qué impide que esta industria tenga bajos índices de competitividad. Los instrumentos metodológicos aplicados fueron validados por panel de expertos en innovación y estrategia organizacional, fueron tratados estadísticamente mediante el software SPSS y fueron aplicados a las empresas pertenecientes a las bases de datos disponibles en la ciudad de Manizales. Se encuentra que más del 70% de las empresas es informal en la aplicación de actividades de innovación, para un 40% las directrices organizacionales son informales y para el 30% son inexistentes y finalmente, los procesos estratégicos un 70% los tienen definidos informalmente y para un 20% son inexistentes.
