A compact nonporous high silica (SiO2 % > 96%) glass containing 3400 ppm Er3+ ions, which was about ten times higher than that in Er-doped silica fiber amplifier (EDSFA), was synthesized by sintering porous glass immersed into erbium nitrate solution. The 1532 nm fluorescence has a FWHM (Full Width at Half Maximum) of 45 nm wider than that of EDSFA and possesses the glass with potential application in broadband fiber amplifiers. The Judd-Ofelt theoretical analysis reflects that Er3+ ions are located in a higher covalent environment which are comparable to those of aluminosilicate glass. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Highly (001) orientation LiGaO2 layers have been successfully fabricated on (100) beta-Ga2O3 surface by vapor transport equilibration (VTE) technique. The temperature is very important for the WE treatment. At low temperature (800 degrees C), LiGaO(2)layers are textured. As the temperature was raised to 1100 C the layer becomes highly oriented in the [100] direction. It shows that the best temperature for WE treatment is 1100 degrees C. This technique is promising to fabricate small lattice mismatch composite substrate of LiGaO2 (001)//beta-Ga2O3 (100) for GaN films. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A new method was used to prepare erbium-doped high silica (SiO2% > 96%) glasses by sintering nanoporous glasses. The concentration of erbium ions in high silica glasses can be considerably more than that in silica glasses prepared by using conventional methods. The fluorescence of 1532 nm has an FWHM (Full Wave at Half Maximum) of 50 nm, wider than 35 nm of EDSFA (erbium-doped silica fiber amplifer), and hence the glass possesses potential application in broadband fiber amplifiers. The Judd-Ofelt theoretical analysis reflects that the quantum efficiency of this erbium-doped glass is about 0.78, although the erbium concentration in this glass (6 x 103) is about twenty times higher than that in silica glass. These excellent characteristics of Er-doped high silica glass will be conducive to its usage in optical amplifiers and microchip lasers.

We report on an optical interference method for transferring periodic microstructures of metal film from a supporting substrate to a receiving substrate by means of five-beam interference of femtosecond laser pulses. Scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy revealed microstructures with micrometer-order were transferred to the receiving substrate. In the meanwhile, a negative copy of the transferred structures was induced in the metal film on the supporting substrate. The diffraction characteristics of the transferred structures were also evaluated. The present technique allows one-step realization of functional optoelectronic devices. We report a new method for fabricating rare-earth-doped silica glasses for laser materials obtained by sintering nanoporous silica glasses impregnated with rare-earth-doped ions. The fabricated materials have no residual pores and show good optical and mechanical properties. Good performance from a Nd3+-doped silica microchip laser operating at 1.064 mum is successfully demonstrated, suggesting that the fabricated silica glasses have potential for use as active materials for high-power solid-state lasers. Nonpolar a-plane (1 1 2 0) ZnO films are fabricated on (3 0 2)gamma-LiAlO2 substrate by pulsed laser deposition. When substrate temperature is low, c-plane ZnO is dominant. As growth temperature increases to similar to 500 degrees C, pure (1 1 2 0)-oriented ZnO film can be obtained. The X-ray rocking curve of a-plane ZnO film broadens sharply when growth temperature is up to similar to 650 degrees C; such a broadening may be related to the anisotropic lateral growth rate of (1 12 0)-oriented ZnO grains. Atomic force microscopy reveals the surface morphology changes of ZnO films deposited at different temperatures. Raman spectra reveal that a compressive stress exists in the a-plane ZnO film. Graded-index ZrO2 films has been fabricated on K9 glass by glancing angle deposition. Because the index mismatch at the interface has been reduced, the film results in wideband high-transmission antireflection. From 400nm to 1200nm, the film reflection is lower than 0.8% and the lowest value is 0.2% at 432nm.

The far-field intensity distribution of hollow Gaussian beams was investigated based on scalar diffraction theory. An analytical expression of the M-2 factor of the beams was derived on the basis of the second-order moments. Moreover, numerical examples to illustrate our analytical results are given.
