Stone masonry spires are vulnerable to seismic loading. Computational methods are often used to predict the dynamic linear elastic response of masonry towers and spires, but this approach is only applicable until the first masonry joint begins to open, limiting the ability to predict collapse. In this paper, analytical modeling is used to investigate the uplift, rocking and collapse of stone spires. General equations for static equilibrium of the spire under lateral acceleration are first presented, and provide a reasonable lower bound for predicting collapse. The dynamic response is then considered through elastic modal analysis and rigid body rocking. Together, these methods are used to provide uplift curves and single impulse overturning collapse curves for a complete range of possible spire geometries. Results are used to evaluate the historic collapse of two specific stone spires. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

The tensile response of single crystal films passivated on two sides is analysed using climb enabled discrete dislocation plasticity. Plastic deformation is modelled through the motion of edge dislocations in an elastic solid with a lattice resistance to dislocation motion, dislocation nucleation, dislocation interaction with obstacles and dislocation annihilation incorporated through a set of constitutive rules. The dislocation motion in the films is by glide-only or by climb-assisted glide whereas in the surface passivation layers dislocation motion occurs by glide-only and penalized by a friction stress. For realistic values of the friction stress, the size dependence of the flow strength of the oxidised films was mainly a geometrical effect resulting from the fact that the ratio of the oxide layer thickness to film thickness increases with decreasing film thickness. However, if the passivation layer was modelled as impenetrable, i.e. an infinite friction stress, the plastic hardening rate of the films increases with decreasing film thickness even for geometrically self-similar specimens. This size dependence is an intrinsic material size effect that occurs because the dislocation pile-up lengths become on the order of the film thickness. Counter-intuitively, the films have a higher flow strength when dislocation motion is driven by climb-assisted glide compared to the case when dislocation motion is glide-only. This occurs because dislocation climb breaks up the dislocation pile-ups that aid dislocations to penetrate the passivation layers. The results also show that the Bauschinger effect in passivated thin films is stronger when dislocation motion is climb-assisted compared to films wherein dislocation motion is by glide-only. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

This paper presents a novel, three-dimensional, single-pile model, formulated in the wavenumber domain and adapted to account for boundary conditions using the superposition of loading cases. The pile is modelled as a column in axial vibration, and a Euler-Bernoulli beam in lateral vibration. The surrounding soil is treated as a viscoelastic continuum. The response of the pile is presented in terms of the stiffness and damping coefficients, and also the magnitude and phase of the pile-head frequency-response function. Comparison with existing models shows that excellent agreement is observed between this model, a boundary-element formulation, and an elastic-continuum-type formulation. This three-dimensional model has an accuracy equivalent to a 3D boundary-element model, and a runtime similar to a 2D plane-strain analytical model. Analysis of the response of the single pile illustrates a difference in axial and lateral vibration behaviour; the displacement along the pile is relatively invariant under axial loads, but in lateral vibration the pile exhibits localised deformations. This implies that a plane-strain assumption is valid for axial loadings and only at higher frequencies for lateral loadings. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

The quasi-static and dynamic responses of laminated beams of equal areal mass, made from monolithic CFRP and Ultra high molecular weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE), have been measured. The end-clamped beams were impacted at mid-span by metal foam projectiles to simulate localised blast loading. The effect of clamping geometry on the response was investigated by comparing the response of beams bolted into the supports with the response of beams whose ends were wrapped around the supports. The effect of laminate shear strength upon the static and dynamic responses was investigated by testing two grades of each of the CFRP and UHMWPE beams: (i) CFRP beams with a cured matrix and uncured matrix, and (ii) UHMWPE laminates with matrices of two different shear strengths. Quasi-static stretch-bend tests indicated that the load carrying capacity of the UHWMPE beams exceeds that of the CFRP beams, increases with diminishing shear strength of matrix, and increases when the ends are wrapped rather than through-bolted. The dynamic deformation mode of the beams is qualitatively different from that observed in the quasi-static stretch-bend tests. In the dynamic case, travelling hinges emanate from the impact location and propagate towards the supports; the beams finally fail by tensile fibre fracture at the supports. The UHMWPE beams outperform the CFRP beams in terms of a lower mid-span deflection for a given impulse, and a higher failure impulse. Also, the maximum attainable impulse increases with decreasing shear strength for both the UHMWPE and CFRP beams. The ranking of the beams for load carrying capacity in the quasi-static stretch-bend tests is identical to that for failure impulse in the impact tests. Thus, the static tests can be used to gauge the relative dynamic performances of the beams. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A tribometer, based on a pin-on-disc machine, uses a PZT drive to produce small sinusoidal fluctuations of sliding speed. The frequency and amplitude of these fluctuations can be controlled, and the dynamic response measured. Preliminary test results show that the dynamic friction variation is influenced by the contact materials, normal force, oscillation frequency and steady sliding speed. The variation of friction force amplitude and phase with frequency gives clues about the underlying state variables determining the friction. Modelling studies illustrate the expected behaviour for idealized friction laws governed by, for example, sliding speed, contact temperature, and "rate-state" laws. © 2008 SAE International.

The ballistic performance of clamped circular carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) and Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibre composite plates of equal areal mass and 0/90 lay-up were measured and compared with that of monolithic 304 stainless steel plates. The effect of matrix shear strength upon the dynamic response was explored by testing: (i) CFRP plates with both a cured and uncured matrix and (ii) UHMWPE laminates with identical fibres but with two matrices of different shear strength. The response of these plates when subjected to mid-span, normal impact by a steel ball was measured via a dynamic high speed shadow moiré technique. Travelling hinges emanate from the impact location and travel towards the supports. The anisotropic nature of the composite plate results in the hinges travelling fastest along the fibre directions and this results in square-shaped moiré fringes in the 0/90 plates. Projectile penetration of the UHMWPE and the uncured CFRP plates occurs in a progressive manner, such that the number of failed plies increases with increasing velocity. The cured CFRP plate, of high matrix shear strength, fails by cone-crack formation at low velocities, and at higher velocities by a combination of cone-crack formation and communition of plies beneath the projectile. On an equal areal mass basis, the low shear strength UHMWPE plate has the highest ballistic limit followed by the high matrix shear strength UHMWPE plate, the uncured CFRP, the steel plate and finally the cured CFRP plate. We demonstrate that the high shear strength UHMWPE plate exhibits Cunniff-type ballistic limit scaling. However, the observed Cunniff velocity is significantly lower than that estimated from the laminate properties. The data presented here reveals that the Cunniff velocity is limited in its ability to characterise the ballistic performance of fibre composite plates as this velocity is independent of the shear properties of the composites: the ballistic limit of fibre composite plates increases with decreasing matrix shear strength for both CFRP and UHMWPE plates. © 2013 Elsevier Masson SAS. The study of random dynamic systems usually requires the definition of an ensemble of structures and the solution of the eigenproblem for each member of the ensemble. If the process is carried out using a conventional numerical approach, the computational cost becomes prohibitive for complex systems. In this work, an alternative numerical method is proposed. The results for the response statistics are compared with values obtained from a detailed stochastic FE analysis of plates. The proposed method seems to capture the statistical behaviour of the response with a reduced computational cost.

Sandwich panels with crushable foam cores have attracted significant interest for impulsive load mitigation. We describe a method for making a lightweight, energy absorbing, glass fiber composite sandwich structure and explore it is through thickness (out-of-plane) compressive response. The sandwich structure utilized corrugated composite cores constructed from delamination resistant 3D woven E-glass fiber textiles folded over triangular cross section prismatic closed cell, PVC foam inserts. The corrugated structure was stitched to 3D woven S2-glass fiber face sheets and infiltrated with a rubber toughened, impact resistant epoxy. The quasi-static compressive stress-strain response of the panels was experimentally investigated as a function of the strut width to length ratio and compared to micromechanical predictions. Slender struts failed by elastic (Euler) buckling which transitioned to plastic microbuckling as the strut aspect ratio increased. Good agreement was observed between experimental results and micromechanical predictions over the wide range of core densities investigated in the study.

The response of back-supported buffer plates comprising a solid face sheet and foam core backing impacted by a column of high velocity particles (sand slug) is investigated via a lumped parameter model and coupled discrete/continuum simulations. The buffer plate is either resting on (unattached) or attached to a rigid stationary foundation. The lumped parameter model is used to construct maps of the regimes of behaviour with axes of the ratio of the height of the sand slug to core thickness and the normalised core strength. Four regimes of behaviour are identified based on whether the core compression ends prior to the densification of the sand slug or vice versa. Coupled discrete/continuum simulations are also reported and compared with the lumped parameter model. While the model predicted regimes of behaviour are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations, the lumped parameter model is unable to predict the momentum transmitted to the supports as it neglects the role of elasticity in both the buffer plate and the sand slug. The numerical calculations show that the momentum transfer is minimised for intermediate values of the core strength when the so-called "soft-catch" mechanism is in play. In this regime the bounce-back of the sand slug is minimised which reduces the momentum transfer. However, in this regime, the impulse reduction is small (less than 10% of that transferred to a rigid structure). For high values of the core strength, the response of the buffer plate resembles a rigid plate with nearly no impulse mitigation while at low values of core strength, a slap event occurs when the face sheet impinges against the foundation due to full densification of the foam core. This slap event results in a significant enhancement of the momentum transfer to the foundation. The results demonstrate that appropriately designed buffer plates have potential as impulse mitigators in landmine loading situations. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The low speed impact responses of simply-supported and clamped sandwich beams with corrugated and Y-frame cores have been measured in a drop-weight apparatus at 5 m s-1. The AISI 304 stainless steel sandwich beams comprised two identical face sheets and represented 1:20 scale versions of ship hull designs. No significant rate effects were observed at impact speeds representative of ship collisions: the drop-weight responses were comparable to the ones measured quasi-statically. Moreover, the corrugated and Y-frame core beams had similar performances. Three-dimensional finite element (FE) models simulated the experiments and were in good agreement with the measurements. The simulations demonstrated correctly that the sandwich beams collapsed by core indentation under both quasi-static loading and in the drop-weight experiments. These FE models were then used to investigate the sensitivity of impact response to (i) velocity, over a wider range of velocities than achievable with the drop-weight apparatus, and (ii) the presence of the back face sheet. The dynamic responses of sandwich beams with both front and back face sheets were found to be within 20% of the quasi-static responses for speeds less than approximately 5 m s-1. This suggests that quasi-static considerations are adequate to model the collision of a sandwich ship hull. By contrast, beams without a back face collapsed by Brazier buckling under quasi-static loading conditions, and by core indentation at a loading velocity of 5 m s-1. Thus, dynamic considerations are needed in ship hull designs that do not employ a back face. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The dynamic response of end-clamped sandwich and monolithic beams of equal areal mass subjected to loading via high-velocity slugs of dry and water-saturated sand is measured using a novel laboratory-based method. The sandwich beams comprise aluminium face sheets and an aluminium honeycomb core: the effect of sandwich core strength and beam thickness on the dynamic beam deflection is investigated by varying the orientation and height of the anisotropic aluminium honeycomb core material. High-speed imaging is used to measure the transient transverse deflection of the beams and to record the dynamic modes of deformation. The measurements show that sandwich beams with thick, strong cores are optimal and that these beams significantly outperform monolithic beams of equal mass. The water-saturated sand slugs cause significantly higher deflections compared to the dry sand slugs having the same mean slug velocity and we demonstrate that this enhanced deflection is due to the larger mass of the water-saturated slugs. Finally, we show that the impact of sand slugs is equivalent to the impact of a crushable foam projectile. The experiments using foam projectiles are significantly simpler to perform and thus represent a more convenient laboratory technique. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Tributyltin (TBT) is widely used as antifouling paints, agriculture biocides, and plastic stabilizers around the world, resulting in great pollution problem in aquatic environments. However, it has been short of the biomonitor to detect TBT in freshwater. We constructed the suppression subtractive hybridization library of Tetrahymena thermophila exposed to TBT, and screened out 101 Expressed Sequence Tags whose expressions were significantly up- or down-regulated with TBT treatment. From this, a series of genes related to the TBT toxicity were discovered, such as glutathione-S-transferase gene (down-regulated), plasma membrane Ca2+ ATPase isoforms 3 gene (up-regulated) and NgoA (up-regulated). Furthermore, their expressions under different concentrations of TBT treatment (0.5-40 ppb) were detected by real time fluorescent quantitative PCR. The differentially expressed genes of T thermophila in response to TBT were identified, which provide the basic to make Tetrahymena as a sensitive, rapid and convenient TBT biomonitor in freshwater based on rDNA inducible expression system. Ultrasonic solvent extraction combined with solid-phase microextraction (SPME) with calix[4]arene/hydroxy-terminated silicone (C[4]/OHTSO) oil coated fiber was used to extract phthalate acid esters (PAEs) plasticizers in plastic, such as blood bags, transfusion tubing, food packaging bag, and mineral water bottle for analysis by gas chromatography (GC). Both extraction parameters (i.e. extraction time, extraction temperature, ionic strength) and conditions of the thermal desorption in a GC injector were optimized by analysis of eight phthalates. The fiber shows wonderful sensitivity and selectivity to the tested compounds. Owing to its high thermal stability (380 degreesC), the carryover effect that often encountered when using conventional fibers can be reduced by appropriately enhancing the injector temperature. The method showed linear response over two to four orders of magnitude with correlation coefficients (r) better than 0.996, and limits of detection (LOD) ranged between 0.006 and 0.084 mug l(-1). The relative standard deviation values obtained were less than or equal to 10%. bis-2-Ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) was the sole analyte detected in these plastics and recoveries were in the ranges 95.5-101.4% in all the samples. In this paper, we propose the dynamic P-V curve for modulator and P-I curve for laser diode, and present a simple approach to deriving the curves from the small-signal frequency responses measured using a microwave network analyzer. The linear response range, modulation efficiency, optimal driving conditions at different frequency can, therefore, be determined. It is demonstrated that the large-signal performance of electro-absorption (EA) modulator and the directly modulated semiconductor lasers can be predicted from the dynamic curved surface. Experiments show a good agreement between the evaluated characteristics and the measured large-signal performance.

A novel silicon-on-insulator thermo-optic variable optical attenuator with isolated grooves based on a multimode interference coupler principle is fabricated by the inductive coupled plasma etching technology. The maximum fibre-to-fibre insertion loss is lower than 2.2 dB, the dynamic attenuation range is from 0 to 30 dB in the wavelength range 1500-1600 nm, and the maximum power consumption is only 140 mW. The response frequency of the fabricated variable optical attenuator is about 30 kHz. Compared to the variable optical attenuator without isolated grooves, the maximum power consumption decreases more than 220 mW, and the response frequency rises are more than 20 kHz.
