We report interparticle interactions effects on the magnetic structure of the surface region in Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles. For that, we have studied a desirable system composed by Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles with (d) = 9.3 nm and a narrow size distribution. These particles present an interesting morphology constituted by a crystalline core and a broad (similar to 50% vol.) disordered superficial shell. Two samples were prepared with distinct concentrations of the particles: weakly-interacting particles dispersed in a polymer and strongly-dipolar-interacting particles in a powder sample. M(H, T) measurements clearly show that strong dipolar interparticle interaction modifies the magnetic structure of the structurally disordered superficial shell. Consequently, we have observed drastically distinct thermal behaviours of magnetization and susceptibility comparing weakly- and strongly-interacting samples for the temperature range 2 K < T < 300 K. We have also observed a temperature-field dependence of the hysteresis loops of the dispersed sample that is not observed in the hysteresis loops of the powder one.

Impurity-interstitial dipoles in calcium fluoride solutions with Al3+, Yb3+ and La3+ fluorides were studied using the thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) technique. The dipolar complexes are formed by substitutional trivalent ions in Ca2+ sites and interstitial fluorine in nearest neighbor sites. The relaxations observed at 150 K are assigned to dipoles nnR(S)(3+)- F-i(-) (R-S = La or Yb). The purpose of this work is to study the processes of energy storage in the fluorides following X-ray and gamma irradiation. Computer modelling techniques are used to obtain the formation energy of dipole defects. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Thermoluminescence, electron paramagnetic resonance and optical absorption properties of rhodonite, a natural silicate mineral, have been investigated and compared to those of synthetic crystal, pure and doped. The TL peaks grow linearly for radiation dose up to 4 kGy, and then saturate. In all the synthetic samples, 140 and 340 degrees C TL peaks are observed; the difference occurs in their relative intensities, but only 340 degrees C peak grows strongly for high doses. Al(2)O(3) and Al(2)O(3) + CaO-doped synthetic samples presented several decades intenser TL compared to that of synthetic samples doped with other impurities. A heating rate of 4 degrees C/s has been used in all the TL readings. The EPR spectrum of natural rhodonite mineral has only one huge signal around g = 2.0 with width extending from 1,000 to 6,000 G. This is due to Mn dipolar interaction, a fact proved by numerical calculation based on Van Vleck dipolar broadening expression. The optical absorption spectrum is rich in absorption bands in near-UV, visible and near-IR intervals. Several bands in the region from 540 to 340 nm are interpreted as being due to Mn(3+) in distorted octahedral environment. A broad and intense band around 1,040 nm is due to Fe(2+). It decays under heating up to 900 degrees C. At this temperature it is reduced by 80% of its original intensity. The pink, natural rhodonite, heated in air starts becoming black at approximately 600 degrees C.

Fluorene and thiophene units are commonly used in polymeric materials for electro-optical applications. Due to differences in reactivity, the final composition of polymers containing these components often differs from that used in their preparation. This contribution describes the synthesis of PPV type terpolymers built by fluorene, phenylene and thiophene units and their quantification by CPMAS NMR. The similarity of the three aromatic co-monomers makes it difficult to separate the analytical responses that would allow quantification of each copolymer unit in the chain. In this sense, we show that the combination of dipolar dephased CPMAS with radiofrequency ramp and proper spectral treatment allows a good estimation and quantification of the copolymer constitution. Glasses having the composition (100 - x)As2P2S8-xGa(2)S(3) with x ranging from 0 to 50% were investigated to determine the compositional effect on properties and local structure. The glass transition temperature (T-g) and the stability parameter against crystallization (T-x - T-g) increased with the addition of Ga2S3. The structure of these glasses was probed by Raman scattering, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and P-31 nuclear magnetic resonance. On the basis of the observed vibrations and the strength of the P-31-P-31 homonuclear magnetic dipolar coupling, two scenarios can be proposed for the structural evolution induced by the addition of Ga2S3. For x <= 20% we may have the formation of GaS4E- groups (E = nonbonding electron), and for x >= 30% we have depolymerization of the As2P2S8 units and the formation of a network of GaPS4 units with each PS4/2 unit (Q(4)) species carrying a single positive formal charge.

We present the results of searches for dipolar-type anisotropies in different energy ranges above 2.5 x 10(17) eV with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory, reporting on both the phase and the amplitude measurements of the first harmonic modulation in the right-ascension distribution. Upper limits on the amplitudes are obtained, which provide the most stringent bounds at present, being below 2% at 99% C.L. for EeV energies. We also compare our results to those of previous experiments as well as with some theoretical expectations. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

XACb0070 is an uncharacterized protein coded by the two large plasmids isolated from Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. cirri, the agent of citrus canker and responsible for important economical losses in citrus world production. XACb0070 presents sequence homology only with other hypothetical proteins belonging to plant pathogens, none of which have their structure determined. The NMR-derived solution structure reveals this protein is a homodimer in which each monomer presents two domains with different structural and dynamic properties: a folded N-terminal domain with beta alpha alpha topology which mediates dimerization and a long disordered C-terminal tail. The folded domain shows high structural similarity to the ribbon-helix-helix transcriptional repressors, a family of DNA-binding proteins of conserved 3D fold but low sequence homology: indeed XACb0070 binds DNA. Primary sequence and fold comparison of XACb0070 with other proteins of the ribbon-helix-helix family together with examination of the genes in the vicinity of xacb0070 suggest the protein might be the component of a toxin-antitoxin system. The study on reactivity of several -substituted -sulfonyl malonates toward 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) and Bu3N is described. The reactivity with DABCO revealed the possible competition between decarbalkoxylation and unexpected desulfonylation, depending on the -substituent, because of sterical hindrance around the electrophilic centers (SO2 and CO2R). The derivatives with crowded -substituents suffer selective desulfonylation, and a novel and efficient desulfonylation method can be proposed. The dependence of the reactivity of -sulfonyl malonates on the sterical hindrance around the electrophilic centers is confirmed by conformational analysis (Macromodel/MM2* and Mopac/MP3). The carbanionic mechanism is proved because the corresponding protonated, deuterated, and sulfenylated products were obtained by addition of the corresponding electrophilic agents. Bu3N showed itself to be a novel selective decarbalkoxylation agent for any -substituted -sulfonyl malonate.

The dieletric relaxation properties of thermosetting material nanocomposites based on spherosilicate nanoplatforms were studied from room temperature to 170 degrees C, varying the frequency from 10 to 1000 KHz. Permittivity (epsilon'), dielectric loss (epsilon ''), and activation energy (E-a) were calculated. The results of dielectric relaxation were confirmed by those of the final properties. The dielectric loss amplitude decreases with increasing ODPG content until about 70-73 wt % and slightly increases at higher ODPG content. This means that the increasing of the ODPG content in the composite samples decreases the number of pendants groups and/or increases crosslink densitv, causing decreased motion of organic tethers, and subsequently decreasing of the dipolar mobility. The results of apparent activation energy, fracture toughness and tensile modulus mechanical properties show the same profile with respect to ODPG content, in the sense that they exhibit maxima around 70 wt % ODPG. For the ODPG/MDA composites, this formulation of 70 wt % ODPG containing excess of amine is not composition where the highest crosslinked density is reached. This implies that the best mechanical properties and E-a are provided by some degree of chain flexibility. (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The effect of finite size on the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic particles systems is a recurrent subject. One of the aspects wide investigated is the superparamagnetic limit where the temperature destroys the magnetic order of ferromagnetic small particles. Above the block temperature the thermal value of the magnetic moment of the particle vanishes, due to thermal fluctuations. The value of the blocking temperature diminishes when the size of the particle is reduced, reflecting the reduction of the anisotropy energy barrier between the uniform states along the uniaxial axis. The increasing demand for high density magnetic media has recently attracted great research interest in periodic arrangements of nanometric ferromagnetics particles, approach in the superparamagnetic limit. An interesting conjecture is the possibility of stabilization of the magnetic order of small ferromagnetic particles (F) by interface coupling with antiferromagnetic (AF) substrate. These F/AF systems may also help to elucidate some details of the effect of exchange bias, because the effect of interface roughness and the paper of domain walls, either in the substrate or the particle, are significantly reduced. We investigate the magnetic phases of small ferromagnetic particles on a antiferromagnetic substrate. We use a self-consistent local field method, incorporating the interface field and the dipole interaction between the spins of the ferromagnetic particle. Our results indicate that increasing the area of the interface favors the formation of the uniform state. Howere above a critical height value appears a state non-uniform is formed where the spins of in the particle s free surface are rotated with respect to the interface spins direction. We discuss the impact of the competition between the dipolar and interface field on the magnetic charge, that controls the field of flux leakage of the particle, and on the format of the hysteresis curves. Our results indicate that the liquid magnetic charge is not a monotonically increasing function of the height of the particle. The exchange bias may display anomalous features, induced for the dipolar field of the spins near the F/AF interface

We study magnetic interface roughness in F/AF bilayers. Two kinds of roughness were considered. The first one consists of isolated defects that divide the substrate in two regions, each one with an AF sub-lattice. The interface exchange coupling is considered uniform and presents a sudden change in the defects line, favoring Neel wall nucleation. Our results show the interface field dependence of the threshold thickness for the reorientation of the magnetization in the ferromagnetic film. Angular profiles show the relaxation of the magnetization, from Neel wall, at the interface, to reoriented state, at the surface. External magnetic field, perpendicular to the easy axis of the substrate, favors the reoriented state. Depending, of the external magnetic field intensity, parallel to the easy axis of the AF, the magnetization profile at surface can be parallel or perpendicular to the field direction. The second one treats of distributed deffects, periodically. The shape hysteresis curves, exchange bias and coercivity were characterized by interface field intensity and roughness pattern. Our results show that dipolar effects decrease the exchange bias and coercivity

We report an experimental and theoretical study of magnetic properties of synthetic eumelanin. The magnetization curves are determined by using both a vibrating sample magnetometer and a superconducting quantum interferometer device in an extended range of magnetic fields ranging from -10 kOe to 10 kOe at different temperatures. We find that the eumelanin magnetization can be qualitatively explained in terms of a simple model of dipolar spheres with an intrinsic magnetic moment. The latter one is experimentally measured by using X-band electron paramagnetic resonance. Our findings indicate that synthetic melanins are superparamagnetic.
