Este estudo objetivou associar o sobrepeso, obesidade I e II e Circunferência da Cintura (CC) com sintomas de ansiedade e depressão em adultos que buscavam primeiro atendimento médico nutricional para emagrecimento em consultório do município de Santos São Paulo - Brasil, mesmo os que já haviam tentado emagrecer anteriormente. Para coletar dados, foi utilizada uma ficha para caracterização do participante, Inventário IDATE para ansiedade traço estado, Inventário de Beck (BDI) para depressão, balança antropométrica para aferição do peso, altura e cálculo do Índice de Massa Corporal (IMC), fita métrica inelástica para aferir CC. Os dados dos 81 participantes demonstraram que 38% eram jovens, 36% casados, 63% possuíam nível superior completo, 45% alta renda familiar. Estavam em sobrepeso 56% e obesidade I 28%, e 64% apresentavam 77 a 100 cm de CC. A análise simples da distribuição dos sintomas de ansiedade e depressão na elevação do IMC e da CC demonstra que, conforme estes aumentam, a ansiedade e depressão diminuem. Houve alta ocorrência de sintomas de ansiedade traço (75%) estado (70%) de intensidade média baixa e de depressão mínima (64%) que decaem de freqüência conforme eleva o IMC e a CC, bem como redução de freqüência às consultas conforme eleva o IMC. Não houve casos de depressão grave. A análise estatística de Pearson não encontrou correlação entre IMC e CC com sintomas de ansiedade e depressão, o mesmo ocorrendo com o teste para associação Qui-quadrado. Os resultados sugerem ocorrer uma acomodação emocional do indivíduo às pressões causadas pela elevação do peso corporal e os participantes apresentavam-se, em sua maioria, hiporreativos, indiferentes ou insensíveis aos acontecimentos, com desinteresse geral ou falta de desejos aparentando resistência ao tratamento e apatia.

Pregnancy leads to several changes in body composition and morphology of women. It is not clear whether the biomechanical changes occurring in this period are due exclusively to body composition and size or to other physiological factors. The purpose was to quantify the morphology and body composition of women throughout pregnancy and in the postpartum period and identify the contribution of these parameters on the lower limb joints kinetic during gait. Eleven women were assessed longitudinally, regarding anthropometric, body composition, and kinetic parameters of gait. Body composition and body dimensions showed a significant increase during pregnancy and a decrease in the postpartum period. In the postpartum period, body composition was similar to the 1st trimester, except for triceps skinfold, total calf area, and body mass index, with higher results than at the beginning of pregnancy. Regression models were developed to predict women’s internal loading through anthropometric variables. Four models include variables associated with the amount of fat; four models include variables related to overall body weight; three models include fat-free mass; one model includes the shape of the trunk as a predictor variable. Changes in maternal body composition and morphology largely determine kinetic dynamics of the joints in pregnant women.

A preocupação acrescida com a condição e aparência física, refletem-se em cuidados com o estado de saúde e bem-estar e são, nos últimos anos, responsáveis pela expansão dos ginásios e health clubs.Mas, atividade física e a alimentação estão intimamente ligadas, tanto no que respeita à estética como também, com maiores preocupações, no que respeita à saúde. Daí que as duas vertentes estejam ligadas à imagem de pessoas saudáveis e vigorosas. Na verdade, a capacidade de rendimento do organismo melhora com a nutrição adequada. A avaliação da composição corporal é um importante aspeto na determinação da condição física e permite-nos observar as alterações fisiológicas produzidas pelos programas de atividade física e/ou alimentares, oferecendo informações quanto a sua eficiência ou possíveis correções a serem efetuadas. Pretendeu-se com o presente estudo caracterizar os hábitos alimentares e a composição corporal dos indivíduos praticantes de exercício físico num ginásio do Concelho de Coimbra. A amostra foi constituída por 50 indivíduos, 22 do sexo masculino e 28 do sexo feminino, com idades compreendidas entre os 18 e os 57 anos. Estes indivíduos têm em comum o facto de praticarem exercício físico num mesmo ginásio, de uma forma sistemática há pelo menos 6 meses. Para a caracterização dos hábitos de AF dos participantes no estudo foi utilizada a versão curta do International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Para avaliação nutricional recorreu-se ao Questionário Semiquantitativo de Frequência Alimentar (QSFA), elaborado pelo Serviço de Higiene e Epidemiologia da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto. A conversão dos alimentos em nutrientes foi realizada recorrendo ao programa informático Food Processor Plus ® versão 7.0. Foram ainda avaliados os seguintes parâmetros antropométricos: peso, altura, perímetro abdominal, IMC, massa gorda e massa magra. As análises estatísticas foram efetuadas com recurso ao Programa Estatístico SPSS (Statistical Package for the Sciences) para o Windows, versão 20.0. O nível de significância estatística foi mantida em 5% (p<0,05). A análise dos dados permitiu retirar as seguintes conclusões: Os frequentadores de ginásio são na sua maioria indivíduos do sexo feminino (56%), jovens com uma idade média de 27±7 anos. A maioria dos participantes do estudo praticava EF (exercício físico) há 39 meses, no entanto no grupo existe uma grande variabilidade, existindo indivíduos que praticam EF há 6 meses, e outros que o fazem há 180 meses. Praticam EF com uma frequência média de 3,5±1,3 sessões/semana a que corresponde uma prática de EF 6,40±3,2 h/semana. A maioria apresentava um Perímetro Abdominal (PA) de 85,2±6,3 cm, Índice de Massa Corporal (IMC) normal (23,1± 2,6 kg/m2), valores de Massa Gorda (MG) (23,9%) e de Massa Muscular (MM) de 34,6±7,9%. Observou-se uma diminuição da MG com o tempo de prática de exercício de 25,3% (praticantes entre 6-12 meses) vs 20,9% (praticantes> 48 meses). Esta influência temporal, embora sem significado estatístico, verifica-se também relativamente ao perímetro abdominal e IMC, embora neste último numa razão inversa, caracterizada pelo seu aumento. O tipo de exercício praticado influencia a composição corporal: praticantes de exercício aeróbio apresentam um perímetro abdominal inferior (82,3±6,0 cm) aos praticantes de outro tipo de exercícios porém acompanhado de uma percentagem de massa gorda superior (29,4±6,0%).Os praticantes de exercício de resistência apresentam valores de MG de 16,0±7,4%. No estudo por nós realizado, constatou-se inadequação na quantidade energética consumida, face às necessidades efetivas da amostra. Embora a ingestão de hidratos de carbono, de fibra e de lípidos se apresente dentro dos limites recomendados a ingestão de proteína ultrapassa os valores recomendados.Os resultados obtidos mostram que o tipo de exercício bem como o tempo de prática de exercício influenciam a composição corporal. Verificou-se ainda que a alimentação dos participantes no estudo não é adequada do ponto de vista nutricional e para além disso os hábitos nutricionais não parecem influir na composição corporal da amostra. Mais estudos serão necessários para que os hábitos alimentares dos praticantes de exercício em ginásios e health clubs sejam bem conhecidos e os profissionais da área tenham mais informações e possam orientar melhor os praticantes de exercício físico regular em ginásios e health clubs de modo a otimizar os resultados pretendidos através de um aconselhamento nutricional individualizado.

CONTEXT: Chitosan, a deacetylated chitin, is a widely available dietary supplement purported to decrease body weight and serum lipids through gastrointestinal fat binding. Although evaluated in a number of trials, its efficacy remains in dispute. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of chitosan for weight loss in overweight and obese adults. DESIGN AND SETTING: A 24-week randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, conducted at the University of Auckland between November 2001 and December 2002. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 250 participants (82% women; mean (s.d.) body mass index, 35.5 (5.1) kg/m(2); mean age, 48 (12) y). INTERVENTIONS: Participants were randomly assigned to receive 3 g chitosan/day (n = 125) or placebo (n = 125). All participants received standardised dietary and lifestyle advice for weight loss. Adherence was monitored by capsule counts. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome measure was change in body weight. Secondary outcomes included changes in body mass index, waist circumference, body fat percentage, blood pressure, serum lipids, plasma glucose, fat-soluble vitamins, faecal fat, and health-related quality of life. RESULTS: In an intention-to-treat analysis with the last observation carried forward, the chitosan group lost more body weight than the placebo group (mean (s.e.), -0.4 (0.2) kg (0.4% loss) vs +0.2 (0.2) kg (0.2% gain), P = 0.03) during the 24-week intervention, but effects were small. Similar small changes occurred in circulating total and LDL cholesterol, and glucose (P < 0.01). There were no significant differences between groups for any of the other measured outcomes. CONCLUSION: In this 24-week trial, chitosan treatment did not result in a clinically significant loss of body weight compared with placebo.

Individuals from the same population share a number of contextual circumstances that may condition a common level of blood pressure over and above individual characteristics. Understanding this population effect is relevant for both etiologic research and prevention strategies. Using multilevel regression analyses, the authors quantified the extent to which individual differences in systolic blood pressure (SBP) could be attributed to the population level. They also investigated possible cross-level interactions between the population in which a person lived and pharmacological (antihypertensive medication) and nonpharmacological (body mass index) effects on individual SBP. They analyzed data on 23,796 men and 24,986 women aged 35-64 years from 39 worldwide Monitoring of Trends and Determinants in Cardiovascular Disease (MONICA) study populations participating in the final survey of this World Health Organization project (1989-1997). SBP was positively associated with low educational achievement, high body mass index, and use of antihypertensive medication and, for women, was negatively associated with smoking. About 7-8% of all SBP differences between subjects were attributed to the population level. However, this population effect was particularly strong (i.e., 20%) in antihypertensive medication users and overweight women. This empirical evidence of a population effect on individual SBP emphasizes the importance of developing population-wide strategies to reduce individual risk of hypertension.

AIM: To establish a simple method to quantify muscle/fat constituents in cervical muscles of asymptomatic women using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and to determine whether there is an age effect within a defined age range. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MRI of the upper cervical spine was performed for 42 asymptomatic women aged 18-45 years. The muscle and fat signal intensities on axial spin echo T1-weighted images were quantitatively classified by taking a ratio of the pixel intensity profiles of muscle against those of intermuscular fat for the rectus capitis posterior major and minor and inferior obliquus capitis muscles bilaterally. Inter- and intra-examiner agreement was scrutinized. RESULTS: The average relative values of fat within the upper cervical musculature compared with intermuscular fat indicated that there were only slight variations in indices between the three sets of muscles. There was no significant correlation between age and fat indices. There were significant differences for the relative fat within the muscle compared with intermuscular fat and body mass index for the right rectus capitis posterior major and right and left inferior obliquus capitis muscles (p = 0.032). Intraclass correlation coefficients for intraobserver agreement ranged from 0.94 to 0.98. Inter-rater agreement of the measurements ranged from 0.75 to 0.97. CONCLUSION: A quantitative measure of muscle/fat constituents has been developed, and results of this study indicate that relative fatty infiltration is not a feature of age in the upper cervical extensor muscles of women aged 18-45 years. Background: Changes in body composition are commonly reported in pediatric survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). However, the effect of ALL and of its treatment on body composition in children in remission from ALL has not been fully examined with the use of a reference method. Objectives: We aimed to determine the body composition and composition of fat-free mass (FFM) in children in remission from ALL. We also aimed to compare the effects that prednisolone and dexamethasone had on the body composition of an ALL survivor population. Design: This cross-sectional study measured height, weight, body volume, total body water, and bone mineral content in 24 children in remission from ALL and 24 age-matched, healthy control subjects. Body composition and FFM composition were evaluated by using the 4-component model. Results: The mean body mass index and fat mass index were significantly (P = 0.05 for both) higher in the ALL survivors than in age-matched control subjects. The composition of the FFM in the 2 treatment groups was not observed to differ significantly. Examination of the composition of FFM made it evident that children in remission from ALL had both significantly greater hydration (P = 0.001) and lower density (P = 0.0001) of FFM than did the control children. Conclusions: Children in remission from ALL may develop excess body fat. To measure body composition accurately in an ALL population, the high hydration and low density of FFM in this population should be taken into consideration.

Objective: To assess validity of the Nambour food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) relative to weighed food records (WFRs), and the extent to which selected demographic, anthropometric and social characteristics explain differences between the two dietary methods. Design: Inter-method validity study; 129-item FFQ vs. 12 days of WFR over 12 months. Setting: Community-based Nambour Skin Cancer Prevention Trial. Subjects: One hundred and fifteen of 168 randomly selected participants in the trial (68% acceptance rate) aged 25-75 years. Results: Spearman correlations between intakes from the two methods ranged from 0.18 to 0.71 for energy-adjusted values. Differences between FFQ and WFR regressed on personal characteristics were significantly associated with at least one characteristic for 16 of the 21 nutrients. Sex was significantly associated with differences for nine nutrients; body mass index (BMI), presence of any medical condition and age were each significantly associated with differences for three to six nutrients; use of dietary supplements and occupation were associated with differences for one nutrient each. There was no consistency in the direction of the significant associations. Regression models explained from 7% (riboflavin) to 27% (saturated fat) of variation in differences in intakes. Conclusions: The relative validity of FFQ estimates for many nutrients is quite different for males than for females. Age, BMI, medical condition and level of intake were also associated with relative validity for some nutrients, resulting in the need to adjust intakes estimates for these in modelling diet-disease relationships. Estimates for cholesterol, beta-carotene equivalents, retinol equivalents, thiamine, riboflavin and calcium would not benefit from this.

Growth, Condition Index (CI) and survival of the pearl oysters, Pinctada maxima and R margaritifera, were measured in three size groups of oysters over 14 months at two dissimilar environments in the Great Barrier Reef lagoon. These were the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) in a mainland bay and Orpheus Island Research Station (OIRS) in coral reef waters. Temperature, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and particulate organic matter (POM) were monitored during the study. Temperature at AIMS fluctuated more widely than at OIRS both daily and seasonally, with annual ranges 20-31 degrees C and 22-30 degrees C, respectively. Mean SPM concentration at AIMS (11.1 mg l(-1)) was much higher than at OIRS (1.4 mg l(-1)) and fluctuated widely (2-60 mg l(-1)). Mean POM level was also substantially higher at AIMS, being 2.1 mg l(-1) compared with 0.56 mg l(-1) at OIRS. Von Bertalatiffy growth curve analyses showed that P. maxima grew more rapidly and to larger sizes than P. margaritifera at both sites. For the shell height (SH) of R maxima, growth index phi'=4.31 and 4.24, asymptotic size SHinfinity = 229 and 205 mm, and time to reach 120 mm SH (T-(120))= 1.9 and 2.1 years at AIMS and OIRS, respectively. While for P margaritifera, phi'=4.00 and 4.15, SHinfinity = 136 and 157 mm, and T-(120) = 2.5 and 3.9 years at AIMS and OIRS, respectively. R maxima had significantly lower growth rates and lower survival of small oysters during winter compared with summer. There were, however, no significant differences between the two sites in growth rates of P. maxima and final Cl values. In contrast, P. margaritifiera showed significant differences between sites and not seasons, with lower growth rates, survival of small oysters, final Cl values and asymptotic sizes at AIMS. The winter low temperatures, but not high SPM at AIMS, adversely affected P. maxima. Conversely, the high SPM levels at AIMS, but not temperature, adversely affected P. margaritifera. This was in accordance with earlier laboratory-based energetics studies of the effects of temperature and SPM on these two species. P maxima has potential to be commercially cultured in ca. > 25 degrees C waters with a wide range of SPM levels, including oligotrophic coral reef waters with appropriate particle sizes. It is possible to culture R margaritifera in turbid conditions, but its poor performance in these conditions makes commercial culture unlikely. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Background: Children's emotional eating is related to greater body mass index and a less-healthy diet, but little is known about the early development of this behavior. Objective: This study aimed to examine the relations between preschool children's emotional eating and parental feeding practices by using experimental manipulation of child mood and food intake in a laboratory setting. Design: Twenty-five 3–5-y-old children and their mothers sat together and ate a standard meal to satiety. Mothers completed questionnaires regarding their feeding practices. Children were assigned to a control or negative mood condition, and their consumption of snack foods in the absence of hunger was measured. Results: Children whose mothers often used food to regulate emotions ate more cookies in the absence of hunger than did children whose mothers used this feeding practice infrequently, regardless of condition. Children whose mothers often used food for emotion regulation purposes ate more chocolate in the experimental condition than in the control condition. The pattern was reversed for children of mothers who did not tend to use food for emotion regulation. There were no significant effects of maternal use of restriction, pressure to eat, and use of foods as a reward on children's snack food consumption. Conclusions: Children of mothers who use food for emotion regulation consume more sweet palatable foods in the absence of hunger than do children of mothers who use this feeding practice infrequently. Emotional overeating behavior may occur in the context of negative mood in children whose mothers use food for emotion regulation purposes. The purpose of this study was to determine the racial and ethnic differences on body image perceptions and weight concerns of fourth grade girls. A purposive sample of 182 fourth grade girls were eligible to participate, 166 were included in the data analysis. The Children's Eating Attitude Test (ChEAT) and a Dieting and Demographic Questionnaire (DDQ) were used to determine eating attitudes of fourth grade girls. A pictoral instrument that was modified from the original was used to assess body image. Anthropometric data was assessed and body mass index (BMI) values were used to classify subjects into percentiles. Results revealed that 56% of all fourth grade girls studied wanted to be thinner and 53% had tried to lose weight. Significantly more non-Hispanic white (NHW) girls reported wanting to be thinner than non-Hispanic black (NHB) and H girls (65.5% vs.32% and 47%, respectively, P=0.005) No significant racial/ethnic differences were revealed for the ChEAT scores. However, 19% of all subjects studied fell into the category indicative of anorexia nervosa. H girls who were less than the 85" %tile for BMI chose significantly smaller figures as their perceived body image (3.5±0.7) than both NHB and NHW girls (4.0±0.6 and 3.9±0.5, respectively, P<0.01). These findings demonstrated that weight concerns were prevalent among girls ages 9- 11 years. NHW and H girls may have more concerns about their body size and shape than their NHB counterparts. Implementing intervention programs at an early age may prevent eating disorders in adolescence and adulthood.

In the US, one in every eight deaths is due to an obesity-related chronic health condition (ORCHC). More than half of African American women (AAW) 20 years old or older are obese or morbidly obese, as are 63% of menopausal AAW. Many have ORCHC that increase their morbidity and mortality and increase health care costs. In 2013, 42.6 percent of AAs living in South Carolina (SC) were obese. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to identify the cognitive, behavioral, biological, and demographic factors that influence health outcomes (BMI, and ORCHC) of AAW living in rural SC. A sample of 200 AAW (50 in each of the 4 groups of rurality by menopausal status), 18-64 years, completed the: Menopausal Rating Scale (symptoms); Body Image Assessment for Obesity (self-perception of body); Mental Health Inventory; Block Food Frequency Questionnaire; Eating Behaviors and Chronic Conditions, Traditional Food Habits, and Food Preparation Technique questionnaires — and measures for Body Mass Index. Most rural, and premenopausal AAW were single and not living with a partner. Premenopausal women had significantly higher educational levels. Sixty percent of AAW had between 1 and 5 ORCHC. Most AAW used salt based seasonings, ate deep fried foods 1 to 3 times a week, and ate outside the home 1 to 3 times a month. Few AAW knew the correct daily serving for grains and dairy, and most consumed less than the recommended daily serving of fruits, vegetables and dairy. Morbidly obese AAW used more traditional food preparation techniques than obese and normal-weight AAW. Rural, and menopausal AAW had significantly higher morbid obesity levels, consumed larger portions of meats and vegetables, and reported more body image dissatisfaction than very rural AAW, and premenopausal AAW, respectively.
