87Sr/86Sr data of belemnites are presented from a Middle Jurassic-Early Cretaceous succession from the Falkland Plateau (Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites 511 and 330) that was deposited in a periodically anoxic, semi-enclosed shallow water basin. Diagenetically screened strontium-isotope values of 0.706789 rise to 0.707044 before increasing sharply to 0.707428 in the uppermost part of the sampled succession. Comparison with published strontium calibration curves suggests that the oldest samples were Callovian to Oxfordian in age, whilst the remainder of the Jurassic part of the succession consisted of Kimmeridgian and Early Tithonian age sediments. The nannofossil, dinoflagellate and molluscan assemblages provide comparable age determinations. The strontium-isotope analysis of the youngest belemnites points to a Hauterivian-Barremian age, whilst age interpretations based upon the fauna provide a wide age range from the Barremian to early Albian. Strontium-isotope stratigraphy of this succession hence offers increased age resolution providing data regarding the timing of episodes of bottom water anoxia which have been recorded throughout the South Atlantic Basin. Well-preserved belemnite specimens display an oxygen-isotope range between +0.08 and -2.22? (PDB, Peedee belemnite international standard) and a carbon-isotope range from +2.35 to -1.33? (PDB). Delta13C values become increasingly negative through the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous and in concert with the 87Sr/86Sr data reveal a trend that could be accounted for by increasing levels of weathering and erosion. The oxygen-isotope data if interpreted in terms of palaeotemperature are consistent with warm palaeotemperatures in the Kimmeridgian and slightly cooler temperatures for the Tithonian and Early Cretaceous parts of the succession. The proposed relative Kimmeridgian warmth (based upon strontium-isotope age assignments) is thus in good agreement with other published palaeotemperature records.

Eastern Mediterranean sediments are characterized by cyclic deposition of organic-rich sediments known as sapropels. Enhanced primary productivity combined with bottom water oxygen depletion are thought to be the main drivers for sapropel deposition. We selected sapropel layers from a suite of ODP-Leg 160 cores, and applied a set of geochemical proxies to determine paleo-productivity variations, redox conditions of the water column during deposition, and provenance of detrital material. High sedimentary Ba/Al and Corg contents indicate enhanced primary production, whereas the sedimentary La/Lu ratio, points to an enhanced contribution from a North African riverine source, during sapropel formation. These features are especially pronounced on Sapropels S5 and S7, deposited during a particularly warm climatic interval. This indicates a more intense North African drainage/weathering and consequently run-off for those sapropels that have the most enhanced expression of productivity too. Correspondingly, the latter has also resulted in bottom water redox conditions that have been more severe during these sapropels than during others. Deepwater formation from Adriatic and Aegean areas, thought to be mainly controlled by sustained cooling of preconditioned surface waters, triggers the onset of bottomwater ventilation, thus sapropel duration. Our data, therefore, suggest that the intensity of sapropel formation is determined by the North African monsoonal system, whereas their duration is directed by northern borderlands climatic conditions.

Most species of Late Cretaceous deep-sea benthic foraminifera are believed to be cosmopolitan and therefore to exhibit only minor biogeographical differences. In this preliminary report, six Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) sites from different oceans, paleolatitudes, and paleodepths were analyzed for terminal Cretaceous abyssal-bathyal benthic foraminifera in order to investigate their assumed cosmopolitan distribution and the question of whether different faunal compositions are related to time, different paleolatitudes, and/or different paleodepths. The material studied was obtained from the low-latitude Site 465 (Pacific Ocean), and the intermediate-latitude Sites 384 (North Atlantic) and 356, 516, 525, and 527 (South Atlantic). The material analyzed represents a time slice encompassing the last 20-50 k.y. of the Cretaceous. The faunas contain numerous "Velasco-type" species, such as Gavelinella beccariiformis (White), Cibicidoides velascoensis (Cushman), Nuttallides truempyi (Nuttall), Gaudryina pyramidata Cushman, and various gyroidinoids and buliminids. The results contradict the general assumption of the cosmopolitan nature of Late Cretaceous deep-sea benthic foraminifera advocated in the literature. Only about 9% of the taxa identified were found to be truly "cosmopolitan" through their occurrence at all the sites analyzed. On the basis of correspondence analysis and relative abundance data, three assemblages and three subassemblages were recognized: (1) a bathyal-abyssal assemblage [Nuttallinella sp. A, Cibicidoides hyphalus (Fisher), Valvalabamina sp. evolute form, and Gyroidinoides spp.] at the South Atlantic Sites 356, 516, 525, and 527, divided into three subassemblages, namely (a) a middle bathyal subassemblage [Eouvigerina subsculptura McNeil and Caldwell, Truaxia aspera (Cushman), and G. pyramidata] at Sites 516 and 525, (b) a lower bathyal subassemblage [Osangularia? sp., Pyramidina rudita (Cushman and Parker), and Quadrimorphina camerata (Brotzen)] at Site 356, and (c) an abyssal subassemblage [Gyroidinoides sp. C, Hyperammina-Bathysiphon, Gyroidinoides beisseli (White), and Globorotalites sp. B] at Site 527; (2) an abyssal assemblage [Buliminella cf. plana (Cushman and Parker) and Bulimina incisa Cushman] at the North Atlantic Site 384; and (3) a middle bathyal assemblage [Vulvulina sp. A, Osangularia navarroana (Cushman), Alabamina? sp., Bulimina velascoensis (Cushman), Spiroplectammina spp. calcareous forms, and Bulimina trinitatensis Cushman and Jarvis] at the Pacific Site 465.

The biotic effects of volcanism have long been the unknown factors in creating biotic stress, and the contribution of the Deccan volcanism to the K-T mass extinction remains largely unknown. Detailed studies of the volcanic-rich sediments of Indian Ocean Ninetyeast Ridge Sites 216 and 217 and Wharton Basin Site 212 reveal that the biotic effects of late Maastrichtian volcanism on planktic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils are locally as severe as those of the K-T mass extinction. The biotic expressions of these high stress environments are characterized by the Lilliput effect, which includes reduced diversity by eliminating most K-strategy species, and reduction in specimen size (dwarfing), frequently to less than half their normal adult size of both r-strategy and surviving K-strategy species. In planktic foraminifera, the most extreme biotic stress results are nearly monospecific assemblages dominated by the disaster opportunist Guembelitria, similar to the aftermath of the K-T mass extinction. The first stage of improving environmental conditions results in dominance of dwarfed low oxygen tolerant Heterohelix species and the presence of a few small r-strategy species (Hedbergella, Globigerinelloides). Calcareous nannofossil assemblages show similar biotic stress signals with the dominance of Micula decussata, the disaster opportunist, and size reduction in the mean length of subordinate r-strategy species particularly in Arkhangelskiella cymbiformis and Watznaueria barnesiae. These impoverished and dwarfed late Maastrichtian assemblages appear to be the direct consequences of mantle plume volcanism and associated environmental changes, including high nutrient influx leading to eutrophic and mesotrophic waters, low oxygen in the water column and decreased watermass stratification.

The rapid warming of arctic regions during recent decades has been recorded by instrumental monitoring, but the natural climate variability in the past is still sparsely reconstructed across many areas. We have reconstructed past climate changes in subarctic west-central Canada. Stable carbon and oxygen isotope ratios (d13C, d18O) were derived from a single Sphagnum fuscum plant component; alpha-cellulose isolated from stems. Periods of warmer and cooler conditions identified in this region, described in terms of a "Mediaeval Climatic Anomaly" and "Little Ice Age" were registered in the temperature reconstruction based on the d13C record. Some conclusions could be drawn about wet/dry shifts during the same time interval from the d18O record, humification indices and the macrofossil analysis. The results were compared with other proxy data from the vicinity of the study area. The amplitude of the temperature change was similar to that in chironomid based reconstructions, showing c. 6.5 ±2.3 °C variability in July temperatures during the past 6.2 ka.

Magnetic fabric analyses from two North Atlantic drift deposits provide proxies for determining relative variations in the strength of abyssal flow over the last 10 my. The data show a cessation of current-controlled sedimentation at the shallower Feni Drift (2417 m) at the time of onset of Northern Hemisphere glaciation (2.6 Ma). Drift formation ended nearly 2 my earlier (4.2 Ma) at the deeper Gardar Drift (3220 m), implying stepwise reduction in deep-water flow. Relatively light delta18O values at the deeper Gardar Drift indicate a warmer, thus also more salty, water mass site prior to 6 Ma. We interpret this as representing Mediterranean Sea water, which flowed north at depths greater than that of the Feni Drift Site. The supply of Mediterranean Water to the North Atlantic was shut off as the Gibraltar Straits closed, causing the Messinian salinity crisis, and never returned to that position in the water column after the Mediterranean opened again.
