Byrsonima crassa Niedenzu (IK) (Malpighiaceae) is used in Brazilian folk medicine for the treatment of diseases related mainly to gastric ulcers. In this study, we evaluated the potential antiulcerogenic effect of three different extracts obtained from the leaves of Byrsonima crassa namely hydromethanolic (80% MeOH), methanolic (MeOH) and chloroformic extracts (CHCl3). The oral administration (250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg) of all the extracts reduced the formation of lesions associated with HCl/ethanol administration in mice. The 80% MeOH extract significantly reduced the incidence of gastric lesions by 74, 78 and 92% at doses of 250,500 and 1000 mg/kg, respectively (P < 0.01). The MeOH extract reduced the ulceration by 93 and 99% only at the doses of 500 and 1000 mg/kg (P < 0.01). The lower gastroprotective action (69%) was observed when animals were treated with CHCl3 extract at the dose of 1000 mg/kg (P < 0.01). Phytochemical investigation of Byrsonima crassa afforded five known substances: quercetin-3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside, quercetin-3-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranoside, the biflavonoid amentoflavone, (+)-catechin and (-)-epicatechin. The presence of these phenolic compounds may probably explain the antiulcerogenic effect of the extracts of Byrsonima crassa leaves. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

Photosynthetic characteristics in response to irradiance were analysed in 21 field and culture populations of thirteen freshwater red algal species applying two distinct techniques (chlorophyll fluorescence and oxygen evolution). Photosynthesis-irradiance (PI) curves indicated adaptations to low irradiances in all species analysed, essentially characterized by occurrence of photoinhibition, low values of the saturation parameter (I-k < 225 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) and compensation irradiance (I-c < 20 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) and relatively high values of the effective quantum yield of photosystem II (Delta F/F'(m) >= 45). These characteristics have been reported in freshwater red algae and were confirmed from data based on the two techniques, indicating they are typically shade-adapted plants. on the other hand, some species (e.g. Batrachospermum delicatulum) can tolerate high irradiances (up to 2400 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)), suggesting they have mechanisms that enable them to avoid photodarnage of the photosynthetic apparatus. One of these mechanisms is the increase in dissipation of excessive energy captured by reaction centres after exposure to continuous irradiance, as reflected by the non-photochemical quenching fluorescence parameter in dark/light induction curves. Photo-inhibition occurred in all algae tested by both techniques. Light acclimation was evident particularly in field populations, as revealed by lower values of the saturation parameter (Ik) and the compensation irradiance (I-c) and higher values of Delta F/F'(m) in algae under low irradiances (shaded or heavily shaded stream segments), and vice-versa. Forms living within the boundary layer (e.g. crusts), in a region of reduced current velocity, tended to be more shade-adapted than semi-erect plants (e.g. non-mucilaginous or mucilaginous filaments), as indicated by highest values of photosynthetic efficiency (alpha = 0.31) and effective quantum yield (Delta F/F'(m) = 0.88) under natural conditions. Higher photo- synthetic rates (P-max) for the same species or population were observed under culture than field conditions when measured with the oxygen evolution technique, whereas the opposite trend was observed using chlorophyll fluorescence. We define algebraically for each map germ f: Kn, 0→ Kp, 0 and for each Boardman symbol i = (il, . . ., ik) a number ci(f) which is script A sign-invariant. If f is finitely determined, this number is the generalization of the Milnor number of f when p = 1, the number of cusps of f when n = p = 2, or the number of cross caps when n = 2, p = 3. We study some properties of this number and prove that, in some particular cases, this number can be interpreted geometrically as the number of Σi points that appear in a generic deformation of f. In the last part, we compute this number in the case that the map germ is a projection and give some applications to catastrophe map germs.

The yield and chemical composition of essential oils from leaves of Ocimum selloi B. submitted to organic and mineral fertilization, obtained by hydrodistillation and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) were compared. Essential oil was extracted in a Clevenger-type apparatus for 2 h 30 min and analyzed by GC-MS (Shimadzu, QP 5050-DB-5 capillary column - 30 m × 0.25 mm × 0.25 μm). Carrier gas was helium (1.7 ml/min); split ratio: 1:30. Temperature program: 50°C, rising to 180°C at 5°C/min, 180°C, rising to 280°C at 10°C/min. Injector temperature: 240°C and detector temperature: 230°C. Identifications of chemical compounds were made by matching their mass spectra and Kovat's indices (IK) values with known compounds reported in the literature. An Applied Separations-apparatus (Speed SFE, model 7071, Allentown, PA, EUA) was used for SFE extractions. They were conducted at pressure 200 bar and temperature 30°C (20 min in static mode and 40 min in dynamic mode). The supercritical CO2 flow rate was (6.8±0.7)×10-5 kg-CO2/s. The essential oil collected was immersed in ethylene glycol bath (5°C). The yield of essential oils obtained by SFE was larger than hydrodistillation in both fertilization treatments (279 and 333% for organic and mineral fertilizations, respectively). There were no differences between the fertilization treatments. The amount of the volatile components showed by GC-MS chromatogram was highest in the essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation than SFE. The main volatile constituents of the essential oils were trans-anethole (Hydrodistillation: organic - 52.4%; mineral - 55.0%/ SFE: Hydrodistillation - 62.8%; mineral - 66.8%) and methyl-chavicol (Hydrodistillation: organic - 37.3%; mineral - 38.3%/ SFE: organic - 8.4%; mineral - 4.3%). A reduction of methyl-chavicol relative proportion of essential oil obtained by SFE was observed. Cys-anethole, α-copaene, trans-cariofilene, germacrene-D, β-selinene, biciclogermacrene and spathulenol were expressed only in hydrodistillation. The extraction of essential oil by SFE presented larger yield of essential oil than hydrodistillation technique, presenting, however, these essential oils, different phytochemical profiles.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a característica do queijo de coalho, produzido a partir do leite bovino pasteurizado, mediante a utilização de bactérias láticas mesofílicas do gênero Lactococcus lactis ssp. cremoris e Lactococcus lactis ssp. lactis específicas. As culturas láticas oriundas do Banco de Bactérias Láticas da Universidade Estadual do Ceará foram ativadas junto às instalações do Laboratório de Bactérias Láticas da Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia-UFRA, Campus de Belém. As culturas láticas foram ativadas durante três dias consecutivos em Leite Desnatado Reconstituído (LDR) 12% esterilizado e incubadas a 30 °C ± 2 °C, até a coagulação do leite. Após reativação, a cultura industrial foi obtida pela transferência do inoculo de 1% (v/v) para frascos de vidros contendo 500 ml de LDR 12% esterilizado, seguida de incubação a 30 °C ± 2 °C até a coagulação do leite, em seguida a cultura (fermento lático) foi adicionada diretamente no tanque de fabricação contendo o leite pasteurizado, mantendo-se a proporção de 1:1. Para avaliação tecnológica foram utilizados as seguintes culturas láticas isoladas de leite cru: Lactococcus lactis ssp. lactis (LL); Lactococcus lactis (atípico) (LLA); Lactococcus lactis ssp. cremoris (atípico) (LLCA); Lactococcus lactis ssp. cremoris (LLC),. As porções de Amostras foram retiradas, colocadas em processador de alimentos e processadas até formar uma amostra. Em seguida, foram acondicionadas em frascos estéreis, identificadas e mantidas em freezer para posterior análises de determinação do extrato seco, umidade (%), extrato seco total (EST), gordura (G), gordura no extrato seco (GES), acidez, pH, cloretos, nitrogênio total (NT), nitrogênio solúvel em pH 4,6, nitrogênio solúvel em TCA 12%. O índice de proteólise ou extensão da maturação foi avaliado pela divisão do NT. Para o teste de aceitação utilizou-se a escala hedônica estruturada de nove pontos, para avaliar o produto quanto ao aroma, aspecto geral, gosto e textura. O teste de fritura de acordo com metodologia descrita por Cavalcante et al., (2007). As análises microbiológicas das amostras de queijos experimentais nos 1º e 30º dia de maturação, encaminhadas ao Laboratório Central – LACEN, Divisão de Análises de Produtos – DEP. E consistiram em Contagem de bactérias Aeróbias Mesófilas, Determinação de Coliformes. Para o teste de fritura não houve análise estatística. O delineamento utilizado foi o Inteiramente Casualisado e foi utilizada a metodologia de modelos mistos para dados longitudinais, com objetivo de modelar a estrutura de (co)variância entre medidas coletadas na mesma unidade experimental em tempos diferentes, por meio do modelo yijk=μ+αi+ δ(i)+βk+ α βik+εijk. Utilizando-se o programa estatístico Statistical Analysis Systems - SAS (SAS INSTITUTE INC., 1992). Os tratamentos LL e LLA foram reprovados no teste de fritura. Houve ligação entre a característica derretimento com a umidade, acidez e proteólise. Os queijos que apresentaram maiores valores de proteólise apresentaram maior capacidade de derretimento. As amostras de queijo coalho tiveram boa aceitabilidade no teste de aceitação.
