A population-based telephone survey conducted in 2002 estimated that there were 3.2 million episodes of acute gastroenteritis on the island of Ireland each year (Scallon et al., 2004). It is often very dif ficult to definitively identify the source of illness. However, of the respondents in that study suspecting food as the reason for their illness, 74% blamed food consumed from commercial premises such as restaurants, cafés, takeaways, canteens and pubs. Within the food services industry, statistics show a significant level of prosecutions, prohibition and closure orders of restaurants for food hygiene offences. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has identified the main contributory factors to foodborne infections to be: cross-contamination, inadequate cooking, inadequate storage, inadequate reheating, delayed serving and infected food handlers (FSAI, 2000). Development of appropriate training and education campaigns to target problem areas requires initial understanding of the current level of food safety knowledge and practices in the food services industry.

Although leishmaniasis is regarded as a significant health problem in Ecuador by the Ministry of Health, and the incidence has increased over the last years, an official map on the geographic distribution of disease and sand fly vectors or a control strategy do not exist yet. This article reviews the current situation based on published information to improve our knowledge and understand the epidemiological situation of leishmaniasis in Ecuador in order to help future research and to develop a national control strategy. The disease is endemic in most provinces throughout Pacific coastal region, Amazonian lowlands, and some inter-Andean valleys with a total 21,805 cases reported during 1990-2003. Whereas cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is found throughout Ecuador, mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL) appears to be restricted to the Amazon region; one, parasitologically unconfirmed case of visceral form was reported in 1949. Most human infections are caused by Leishmania (Viannia) spp., which is distributed in the subtropical and tropical lowlands; infections due to L. (Leishmania) spp. are found in the Andean highlands and in the Pacific lowlands as well. The proven vectors are Lutzomyia trapidoi and Lu. ayacuchensis. Canis familiaris, Sciurus vulgaris, Potos flavus, and Tamandua tetradactyla have been found infected with Leishmania spp. It is estimated that around 3000-4500 people may be infected every year, and that 3.1 to 4.5 millions people are estimated to be at risk of contracting leishmaniasis.

The Kilkenny post-primary school survey was carried out in the spring of 1987 on a stratified random sample of 445 post-primary school children in county Kilkenny. The study was designed as the basis for evaluation of the Kilkenny Health Project's school health education programme. The study examined knowledge, attitudes and behaviour relevant to non-communicable disease. The results showed that levels of adolescent alcohol and tobacco use were similar to those found in neighbouring countries. Smoking and drinking increased during adolescence and were more prevalent in males. Physical activity decreased throughout adolescence and a high intake of 'snack' foods was found. Health related knowledge levels were high but were not related to behaviour; however attitudes were found to be consistent with behaviour. These and other results are discussed. Literature relevant to school health education and the aetiology of non-communicable disease is described, with particular reference to Ireland. The evidence supporting health promotion intervention programmes against non-communicable disease is examined and WHO and Irish policies on health promotion outlined. The importance of health and disease prevention programmes commencing in youth is emphasised and the suitability and efficacy of school health education programmes are noted. A number of school health education programmes world-wide are described. The role of the community physician in relation to such programmes is discussed. In vascular plants, the best-known feature of a differentiated endodermal cell is the "Casparian Strip" (CS). This structure refers to a highly localized cell wall impregnation in the transversal and anticlinal walls of the cell, which surrounds the cell like a belt/ring and is tightly coordinated with respect to neighboring cells. Analogous to tight junctions in animal epithelia, CS in plants act as a diffusion barrier that controls the movement of water and ions from soil into the stele. Since its first description by Robert Caspary in 1865 there have been many attempts to identify the chemical nature of the cell wall deposition in CS. Suberin, lignin, or both have been claimed to be the important components of CS in a series of different species. However, the exact chemical composition of CS has remained enigmatic. This controversy was due to the confusion and lack of knowledge regarding the precise measurement of three developmental stages of the endodermis. The CS represent only the primary stage of endodermal differentiation, which is followed by the deposition of suberin lamellae all around the cellular surface of endodermal cells (secondary developmental stage). Therefore, chemical analysis of whole roots, or even of isolated endodermal tissues, will always find both of the polymers present. It was crucial to clarify this point because this will guide our efforts to understand which cell wall biosynthetic component becomes localized in order to form the CS. The main aim of my work was to find out the major components of (early) CS, as well as their spatial and temporal development, physiological roles and relationship to barrier formation. Employing the knowledge and tools that have been accumulated over the last few years in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, various histological and chemical assays were used in this study. A particular feature of my work was to completely degrade, or inhibit formation of lignin and suberin biopolymers by biochemical, classical genetic and molecular approaches and to investigate its effect on CS formation and the establishment of a functional diffusion barrier. Strikingly, interference with monolignol biosynthesis abrogates CS formation and delays the formation of function diffusion barrier. In contrast, transgenic plants devoid of any detectable suberin still develop a functional CS. The combination of all these assays clearly demonstrates that the early CS polymer is made from monolignol (lignin monomers) and is composed of lignin. By contrast, suberin is formed much later as a secondary wall during development of endodermis. These early CS are functionally sufficient to block extracellular diffusion and suberin does not play important role in the establishment of early endodermal diffusion barrier. Moreover, suberin biosynthetic machinery is not present at the time of CS formation. Our study finally concludes the long-standing debate about the chemical nature of CS and opens the door to a new approach in lignin research, specifically for the identification of the components of the CS biosynthetic pathway that mediates the localized deposition of cell walls. I also made some efforts to understand the patterning and differentiation of endodermal passage cells in young roots. In the literature, passage cells are defined as a non- suberized xylem pole associated endodermal cells. Since these cells only contain the CS but not the suberin lamellae, it has been assumed that these cells may offer a continued low-resistance pathway for water and minerals into the stele. Thus far, no genes have been found to be expressed specifically in passage cells. In order to understand the patterning, differentiation, and physiological role of passage it would be crucial to identify some genes that are exclusively expressed in these cells. In order to identify such genes, I first generated fluorescent marker lines of stele-expressed transporters that have been reported to be expressed in the passage cells. My aim was to first highlight the passage cells in a non-specific way. In order to find passage cell specific genes I then adapted a two-component system based on previously published methods for gene expression profiling of individual cell types. This approach will allow us to target only the passage cells and then to study gene expression specifically in this cell type. Taken together, this preparatory work will provide an entry point to understand the formation and role of endodermal passage cells. - Chez les plantes vasculaires, la caractéristique la plus commune des cellules différentiées de l'endoderme est la présence de cadres de Caspary. Cette structure correspond à une imprégnation localisée des parties transversales et anticlinales de la paroi cellulaire. Cela donne naissance, autour de la cellule, à un anneau/cadre qui est coordonné par rapport aux cellules voisines. De manière analogue aux jonctions serrées des épithéliums chez les animaux, les cadres de Caspary agissent chez les plantes comme barrière de diffusion, contrôlant le mouvement de l'eau et des ions à travers la racine entre le sol et la stèle. Depuis leur première description par Robert Caspary en 1865, beaucoup de tentatives ont eu pour but de définir la nature chimique de ces cadres de Caspary. Après l'étude de différentes espèces végétales, à la fois la subérine, la lignine ou les deux ont été revendiquées comme étant des composants importants de ces cadres. Malgré tout, leur nature chimique exacte est restée longtemps énigmatique. Cette controverse provient de la confusion et du manque de connaissance concernant la détermination précise des trois stades de développement de l'endoderme. Les cadres de Caspary représentent uniquement le stade primaire de différentiation de l'endoderme. Celui-ci est suivi par le second stade de différentiation, la déposition de lamelles de subérine tout autour de la cellule endodermal. De ce fait, l'analyse chimique de racines entières ou de cellules d'endoderme isolées ne permet pas de séparer les stades de différentiation primaire et secondaire et aboutit donc à la présence des deux polymères. Il est également crucial de clarifier ce point dans le but de connaître quelle machinerie cellulaire localisée à la paroi cellulaire permet l'élaboration des cadres de Caspary. En utilisant les connaissances et les outils accumulés récemment grâce à la plante modèle Arabidopsis thaliana, divers techniques histologiques et chimiques ont été utilisées dans cette étude. Un point particulier de mon travail a été de dégrader ou d'inhiber complètement la formation de lignine ou de subérine en utilisant des approches de génétique classique ou moléculaire. Le but étant d'observer l'effet de l'absence d'un de ces deux polymères sur la formation des cadres de Caspary et l'établissement d'une barrière de diffusion fonctionnelle. De manière frappante, le fait d'interférer avec la voie de biosynthèse de monolignol (monomères de lignine) abolit la formation des cadres de Caspary et retarde l'élaboration d'une barrière de diffusion fonctionnelle. Par contre, des plantes transgéniques dépourvues d'une quantité détectable de subérine sont quant à elles toujours capables de développer des cadres de Caspary fonctionnels. Mises en commun, ces expériences démontrent que le polymère formant les cadres de Caspary dans la partie jeune de la racine est fait de monolignol, et que de ce fait il s'agit de lignine. La subérine, quant à elle, est formée bien plus tard durant le développement de l'endoderme, de plus il s'agit d'une modification de la paroi secondaire. Ces cadres de Caspary précoces faits de lignine suffisent donc à bloquer la diffusion extracellulaire, contrairement à la subérine. De plus, la machinerie de biosynthèse de la subérine n'est pas encore présente au moment de la formation des cadres de Caspary. Notre étude permet donc de mettre un terme au long débat concernant la nature chimique des cadres de Caspary. De plus, elle ouvre la porte à de nouvelles approches dans la recherche sur la lignine, plus particulièrement pour identifier des composants permettant la déposition localisée de ce polymère dans la paroi cellulaire. J'ai aussi fais des efforts pour mettre en évidence la formation ainsi que le rôle des cellules de passage dans les jeunes racines. Dans la littérature, les cellules de passage sont définies comme de la cellule endodermal faisant face aux pôles xylèmes et dont la paroi n'est pas subérisée. Du fait que ces cellules contiennent uniquement des cadres de Caspary et pas de lamelle de subérine, il a été supposé qu'elles ne devraient offrir que peu de résistance au passage de l'eau et des nutriments entre le sol et la stèle. Le rôle de ces cellules de passage est toujours loin d'être clair, de plus aucun gène s'exprimant spécifiquement dans ces cellules n'a été découvert à ce jour. De manière à identifier de tels gènes, j'ai tout d'abord généré des marqueurs fluorescents pour des transporteurs exprimés dans la stèle mais dont l'expression avait également été signalée dans l'endoderme, uniquement dans les cellules de passage. J'ai ensuite développé un système à deux composants basé sur des méthodes déjà publiées, visant principalement à étudier le profil d'expression génique dans un type cellulaire donné. En recoupant les gènes exprimés spécifiquement dans l'endoderme à ceux exprimés dans la stèle et les cellules de passage, il nous sera possible d'identifier le transriptome spécifique de ces cellules. Pris dans leur ensemble, ces résultats devraient donner un bon point d'entrée dans la définition et la compréhension des cellules de passage.

This article examines the extent and limits of non-state forms of authority in international relations. It analyses how the information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure for the tradability of services in a global knowledge-based economy relies on informal regulatory practices for adjustment of ICT-related skills. Companies and associations provide training and certification programmes as part of a growing market for educational services setting their own standards. The existing literature on non-conventional forms of authority in the global political economy has emphasised that the consent of actors subject to informal rules and explicit or implicit state recognition remains crucial for the effectiveness of those new forms of power. However, analyses based on a limited sample of actors tend toward a narrow understanding of the issues and fail to fully explore the differentiated space in which non-state authority is emerging. This paper examines the form of authority underpinning the global knowledge-based economy within the broader perspective of the issues likely to be standardised by technical ICT specification, the wide range of actors involved, and the highly differentiated space where standards become authoritative. The empirical findings highlight the role of different private actors in establishing international educational norms in this field. They also pinpoint the limits of profit-oriented standard-settings, notably with regard to generic norms.

The objective of this study was to analyse the effect of using two health education approaches on knowledge of transmission and prevention of schistosomiasis of school children living in a rural endemic area in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The 87 children participating in the study were divided into three groups based on gender, age and presence or absence of Schistosoma mansoni infection. In the first group the social representation model and illness experience was used. In the second group, we used the cognitive model based on the transmission of information. The third group, the control group, did not receive any information related to schistosomiasis. Ten meetings were held with all three groups that received a pre-test prior to the beginning of the educational intervention and a post-test after the completion of the program. The results showed that knowledge levels in Group 1 increased significantly during the program in regard to transmission (p = 0.038) and prevention (p = 0.001) of schistosomiasis. Groups 2 and 3 did not show significant increase in knowledge between the two tests. These results indicate that health education models need to consider social representation and illness experience besides scientific knowledge in order to increase knowledge of schistosomiasis transmission and prevention.

Since the reinfestation of South American countries by Ae. aegypti, dengue fever (DF) and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) have become a major public health concern. The aim of this paper was to review the information related with Aedes vectors and dengue in Argentina since the reintroduction of Ae. aegypti in 1986. The geographic distribution of Ae. albopictus is restricted to the Northeast, and that of Ae. aegypti has expanded towards the South and the West in comparison with the records during the eradication campaign in the 1960s. Since 1998, 4,718 DF cases have been reported concentrated in the provinces of Salta, Formosa, Misiones, Jujuy and Corrientes. Despite the circulation of three dengue virus serotypes (DENV-1, -2 and -3) in the North of the country, DHF has not occurred until the present. The information published over the last two decades regarding mosquito abundance, temporal variations, habitat characteristics, competition, and chemical and biological control, was reviewed. Considering the available information, issues pending in Argentina are discussed. The presence of three DENV, the potential spread of Ae. albopictus, and the predicted climate change suggest that dengue situation will get worse in the region. Research efforts should be increased in the Northern provinces, where DHF is currently an actual risk.

Reaching and educating the masses to the benefit of all of mankind is the ultimate goal and through the use of this technology facility/tool many can be reached in their own language, in their own community, in their own time and at their own pace. Making this content available to those who will benefit from the information, is vital. These people who want to consume the content are not necessarily that interested in the qualification, they need the information. Making the content available in an auditory format may also help those who may not be as literate as others. The uses of audio/ recorded lessons have a number of uses and should not just be seen as a medium for content distribution to distant communities. Recording lectures makes it possible for a lecturer to present lectures to a vast number of students, while just presenting the lecture once.

Historically, scientists in Brazil has significantly contributed to the biology, cultivation and structural organization of the pathogenic protozoan Toxoplasma gondiiand its interaction with host cells, starting with the description of the protozoan by Splendore in 1908. The intracellular and extracellular corpuscoli observed in rabbits, corresponded to what we now as tachyzoites. Later on, a pioneering method to grow T. gondii in tissue cultures was developed by Guimarães and Meyer, 1942. They also observed for the first time T. gondii by transmission electron microscopy and made the initial description of the cytoskeleton of T. gondii by observing negatively stained cells. In the 1980's, the relation of the cytoskeleton with the sub-pellicular microtubules was reveled by freeze-fracture. More recently, several Brazilian groups have analyzed in detail basic aspects of the early interaction of the protozoan with the host cell, such as the role of protein phosphorylation, transfer of host cell surface components to the protozoan and genesis and organization of the parasitophorous vacuole. Tachyzoites strategically inhibit nitric oxide production during active invasion of activated macrophages. In vitro studies on the sexual cycle of T. gondii using primary cultures of cat enterocytes and the egress from host cells are being carried out. Perspectives are that the contribution of Brazilian science to the knowledge on T. gondii biology will continue to flourish in years to come.

Medical mycology has greatly benefited from the introduction of molecular techniques. New knowledge on molecular genetics has provided both theoretical and practical frameworks, permitting important advances in our understanding of several aspects of pathogenic fungi. Considering Paracoccidioides brasiliensis in particular, important eco-epidemiological aspects, such as environmental distribution and new hosts were clarified through molecular approaches. These methodologies also contributed to a better understanding about the genetic variability of this pathogen; thus, P. brasiliensis is now assumed to represent a species complex. The present review focuses on some recent findings about the current taxonomic status of P. brasiliensis, its phylogenetic and speciation processes, as well as on some practical applications for the molecular detection of this pathogen in environmental and clinical materials.

This paper provides a preliminary formulation of a new currency based on knowledge. Through a literature review of alternative currencies, various properties and benefits are selected that we hope will enable such a currency to be created. Nowadays not only money but also knowledge is necessary to do business. For instance, knowledge about markets and consumers is highly valuable but difficult to achieve, and even more difficult to store, transport or trade. The basic premise of this proposal is a knowledge measurement pattern that is formulated as a new alternative social currency. Therefore, it is an additional means of contributing to the worldwide evolution of a knowledge society. It is intended as a currency to facilitate the conservation and storage of knowledge, and its organization and categorization, but mainly its exploitation and transference
