High solids content film-forming poly[styrene-co-(n-butyl acrylate)] [poly(Sty-co-BuA)] latexes armored with Laponite clay platelets have been synthesized by soap-free emulsion copolymerization of styrene and n-butyl acrylate. The polymerizations were performed in batch in the presence of Laponite and a methyl ether acrylateterminated poly(ethylene glycol) macromonomer in order to promote polymer/clay association. The overall polymerization kinetics showed a pronounced effect of clay on nucleation and stabilization of the latex particles. Cryo-transmission electron microscopy observation confirmed the armored morphology and indicated that the majority of Laponite platelets were located at the particle surface. The resulting nanostructured films displayed enhanced mechanical properties.

Hydrous niobium oxide (Nb(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O) nanoparticles had been Successfully prepared by water-in-oil microemulsion. They were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal analysis (TG/DTG), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), BET surface area measurement, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The results showed that the nanoparticle was exactly Nb(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O with spherical shape. Their BET surface area was 60 m(2) g(-1). XRD results showed that Nb(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O nanoparticles with crystallite size in nanometer scale were formed. The crystallinity and crystallity size increased with increasing annealing temperature. TT-phase of Nb(2)O(5) was obtained when the sample is annealed at 550 degrees C. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Although titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy have been widely used as dental materials, possible undesirable effects such as cytotoxic reactions and neurological disorder due to metal release led to the development of more corrosion resistant and V and Al free titanium alloys, containing Nb, Zr, Mo and Ta atoxic elements. Fluoride containing products used in the prevention of plaque formation and dental caries can affect the stability of the passive oxide films formed on the Ti alloys. In this work, the corrosion behaviour of the new Ti-23Ta alloy has been evaluated in artificial saliva of different pH and fluoride concentration using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy study showed that the oxide film formed on the alloy in artificial saliva consists of an inner compact film and an outer porous layer. The corrosion resistance of Ti-23Ta alloy which is reduced by increasing F concentration or decreasing pH is related to the resistance of the inner compact layer. The presence of fluoride and low pH of the saliva enhance the porosity of the oxide film and its dissolution.

This study aimed to correlate the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis of the cellulose contained in a sugarcane bagasse sample pretreated with dilute H(2)SO(4) with the levels of independent variables such as initial content of solids and loadings of enzymes and surfactant (Tween 20), for two cellulolytic commercial preparations. The preparations, designated cellulase I and cellulase II, were characterized regarding the activities of total cellulases, endoglucanase, cellobiohydrolase, cellobiase, beta-glucosidase, xylanase, and phenoloxidases (laccase, manganese and lignin peroxidases), as well as protein contents. Both extracts showed complete cellulolytic complexes and considerable activities of xylanases, without activities of phenoloxidases. For the enzymatic hydrolyses, two 2(3) central composite full factorial designs were employed to evaluate the effects caused by the initial content of solids (1.19-4.81%, w/w) and loadings of enzymes (1.9-38.1 FPU/g bagasse) and Tween 20 (0.0-0.1 g/g bagasse) on the cellulose digestibility. Within 24 h of enzymatic hydrolysis, all three independent variables influenced the conversion of cellulose by cellulase I. Using cellulase II, only enzyme and surfactant loadings showed significant effects on cellulose conversion. An additional experiment demonstrated the possibility of increasing the initial content of solids to values much higher than 4.81% (w/w) without compromising the efficiency of cellulose conversion, consequently improving the glucose concentration in the hydrolysate.

A methodology of identification and characterization of coherent structures mostly known as clusters is applied to hydrodynamic results of numerical simulation generated for the riser of a circulating fluidized bed. The numerical simulation is performed using the MICEFLOW code, which includes the two-fluids IIT`s hydrodynamic model B. The methodology for cluster characterization that is used is based in the determination of four characteristics, related to average life time, average volumetric fraction of solid, existing time fraction and frequency of occurrence. The identification of clusters is performed by applying a criterion related to the time average value of the volumetric solid fraction. A qualitative rather than quantitative analysis is performed mainly owing to the unavailability of operational data used in the considered experiments. Concerning qualitative analysis, the simulation results are in good agreement with literature. Some quantitative comparisons between predictions and experiment were also presented to emphasize the capability of the modeling procedure regarding the analysis of macroscopic scale coherent structures. This work deals with analysis of cracked structures using BEM. Two formulations to analyse the crack growth process in quasi-brittle materials are discussed. They are based on the dual formulation of BEM where two different integral equations are employed along the opposite sides of the crack surface. The first presented formulation uses the concept of constant operator, in which the corrections of the nonlinear process are made only by applying appropriate tractions along the crack surfaces. The second presented BEM formulation to analyse crack growth problems is an implicit technique based on the use of a consistent tangent operator. This formulation is accurate, stable and always requires much less iterations to reach the equilibrium within a given load increment in comparison with the classical approach. Comparison examples of classical problem of crack growth are shown to illustrate the performance of the two formulations. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The Generalized Finite Element Method (GFEM) is employed in this paper for the numerical analysis of three-dimensional solids tinder nonlinear behavior. A brief summary of the GFEM as well as a description of the formulation of the hexahedral element based oil the proposed enrichment strategy are initially presented. Next, in order to introduce the nonlinear analysis of solids, two constitutive models are briefly reviewed: Lemaitre`s model, in which damage and plasticity are coupled, and Mazars`s damage model suitable for concrete tinder increased loading. Both models are employed in the framework of a nonlocal approach to ensure solution objectivity. In the numerical analyses carried out, a selective enrichment of approximation at regions of concern in the domain (mainly those with high strain and damage gradients) is exploited. Such a possibility makes the three-dimensional analysis less expensive and practicable since re-meshing resources, characteristic of h-adaptivity, can be minimized. Moreover, a combination of three-dimensional analysis and the selective enrichment presents a valuable good tool for a better description of both damage and plastic strain scatterings.

Since hog raising concentrates a huge amount of swine manure in small areas, it is considered by the environmental government organizations to be one of the most potentially pollutant activities. Therefore the main objective of this research was to evaluate by operational criteria and removal efficiency, the performance of a Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR), working as a biological pre-treatment of swine culture effluents. The physical-chemical analyses carried out were: total COD, BOD(5), total solids (TS), fix (TFS) and volatiles (TVS), temperature, pH, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, phosphorus, total acidity and alkalinity. The ABR unit worked with an average efficiency of 65.2 and 76.2%, respectively, concerning total COD and BOD(5), with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) about 15 hours. The results for volumetric organic loading rate (VOLR), organic loading rate (OLR) and hydraulic loading rate (HLR) were: 4.46 kg BOD m(-3) day(-1); 1.81 kg BOD(5) kg TVS(-1) day(-1) and 1.57 m(3) m(-3) day(-1), respectively. The average efficiency of the whole treatment system for total COD and BOD(5) removal were 66.5 and 77.8%, showing an adequate performance in removing die organic matter from swine wastewater.

This study evaluated two different support materials (polystyrene and expanded clay) for biohydrogen production in an anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (AFBR) treating synthetic wastewater containing glucose (4000 mg L(-1)). The AFBRs contained either polystyrene (R1) or expanded clay (R2) as support materials were inoculated with thermally pre-treated anaerobic sludge and operated at a temperature of 30 degrees C and a pH of approximately 5.5. The AFBRs were operated with a range of hydraulic retention times (HRTs) between 1 and 8 h. For R1 with an HRT of 2 h, the maximum hydrogen yield (HY) was 1.90 mol H(2) mol(-1) glucose, with 0.805 mg of biomass (as total volatile solids, or TVS) attached to each g of polystyrene. For R2 operated at an HRT of 2 h, the maximum HY was 2.59 mol H(2) moll glucose, with 1.100 mg of attached biomass (as TVS) g(-1) expanded clay. The highest hydrogen production rates (HPR) were 0.95 and 1.21 L h(-1) L(-1) for R1 and R2, respectively, using an HRT of 1 h. The H(2) content increased from 16-47% for R1 and from 22-51% for R2. No methane was detected in the biogas produced throughout the period of AFBR operation. These results show that the values of HY, HPR, H(2) content, and g of attached biomass g(-1) support material were all higher for AFBRs containing expanded clay than for reactors containing polystyrene. This study aimed to determine the efficiency of an anaerobic stirred sequencing-batch reactor containing granular biomass for the degradation of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), a surfactant present in household detergent. The bioreactor was monitored for LAS concentrations in the influent, effluent and sludge, pH, chemical oxygen demand, bicarbonate alkalinity, total solids, and volatile solids. The degradation of LAS was found to be higher in the absence of co-substrates (53%) than in their presence (24-37%). Using the polymerase chain reaction and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR/DGGE), we identified populations of microorganisms from the Bacteria and Archaea domains. Among the bacteria, we identified uncultivated populations of Arcanobacterium spp. (94%) and Opitutus spp. (96%). Among the Archaea, we identified Methanospirillum spp. (90%), Methanosaeta spp. (98%), and Methanobacterium spp. (96%). The presence of methanogenic microorganisms shows that LAS did not inhibit anaerobic digestion. Sampling at the last stage of reactor operation recovered 61 clones belonging to the domain bacteria. These represented a variety of phyla: 34% shared significant homology with Bacteroidetes, 18% with Proteobacteria, 11% with Verrucomicrobia, 8% with Fibrobacteres, 2% with Acidobacteria, 3% with Chlorobi and Firmicutes, and 1% with Acidobacteres and Chloroflexi. A small fraction of the clones (13%) were not related to any phylum. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

This work examines the extraction of mechanical properties from instrumented indentation P-h(s) curves via extensive three-dimensional finite element analyses for pyramidal tips in a wide range of solids under frictional and frictionless contact conditions. Since the topography of the imprint changes with the level of pile-up or sink-in, a relationship is identified between correction factor beta in the elastic equation for the unloading indentation stage and the amount of surface deformation effects. It is shown that the presumption of a constant beta significantly affects mechanical property extractions. Consequently, a new best-fit function is found for the correlation between penetration depth ratios h(e)/h(max), h(r)/h(max) and n, circumventing the need for the assumption of a constant value for beta, made in our prior investigation [Acta Mater. 53 (2005) pp. 3545-3561]. Simulations under frictional contact conditions provide sensible boundaries for the influence of friction on both h(e)/h(max) and h(r)/h(max). Friction is essentially found to induce an overestimation in the inferred n. Instrumented indentation experiments are also performed in three archetypal metallic materials exhibiting distinctly different contact responses. Mechanical property extractions are finally demonstrated in each of these materials.

Effective solids suspension is a necessary precondition for particle collection, and solids suspension is largely dependent on the hydrodynamics of the flotation cell. This study attempted to correlate the status of the suspension of apatite particles of different sizes in a Denver laboratory flotation cell versus the impeller rotational speed (N) adopted to operate the machine. The latter variable (N) influences the impeller capacity to lift the particles from the bottom of the tank and also to disperse them throughout the volume of the vessel. Such an impeller capacity can be characterized by the critical impeller speed for the accomplishment of solids off-bottom suspension (N(z)) and also by the velocity of the radial water flow discharged by the impeller (U) divided by the particle terminal settling velocity (U(s)). This way, the status of the suspension of apatite particles inside the flotation cell can be characterized by one of three categories: ""segregation"" (N/N(2) < 0.60 and U(s)/U > 0.08); ""suspension"" (0.60 <= N/N(2) < 1 and 0.06 < U(s)/U < 0.10); and ""dragging"" (N/N(2) >= 1 and U(s)/U <= 0.03). The range of impeller rotational speed (N), which was able to suspend the finest particles (D(p) = 90,mu m), was unable to suspend the coarsest particles (D(P) = 254 mu m). Conversely, the high value of N (N > 1,300 rpm), which is adequate to suspend the coarsest particles, may promote the entrainment of the finest particles to the froth layer.

The study of non-Newtonian flow in plate heat exchangers (PHEs) is of great importance for the food industry. The objective of this work was to study the pressure drop of pineapple juice in a PHE with 50 degrees chevron plates. Density and flow properties of pineapple juice were determined and correlated with temperature (17.4 <= T <= 85.8 degrees C) and soluble solids content (11.0 <= X(s) <= 52.4 degrees Brix). The Ostwald-de Waele (power law) model described well the rheological behavior. The friction factor for non-isothermal flow of pineapple juice in the PHE was obtained for diagonal and parallel/side flow. Experimental results were well correlated with the generalized Reynolds number (20 <= Re(g) <= 1230) and were compared with predictions from equations from the literature. The mean absolute error for pressure drop prediction was 4% for the diagonal plate and 10% for the parallel plate.

In this work SiOxNy films are produced and characterized. Series of samples were deposited by the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique at low temperatures from silane (SiH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and helium (He) precursor gaseous mixtures, at different deposition power in order to analyze the effect of this parameter on the films structural properties, on the SiOxNy/Si interface quality and on the SiOxNy effective charge density. In order to compare the film structural properties with the interface (SiOxNy/Si) quality and effective charge density, MOS capacitors were fabricated using these films as dielectric layer. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES), at the Si-K edge, was utilized to investigate the structure of the films and the material bonding characteristics were analyzed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The MOS capacitors were characterized by low and high frequency capacitance (C-V) measurements, in order to obtain the interface state density (D-it) and the effective charge density (N-ss). An effective charge density linear reduction for decreasing deposition power was observed, result that is attributed to the smaller amount of ions present in the plasma for low RF power. The aim of this work was evaluate the effect of citric acid at 1% and 2% in the maintenance of the quality of minimally processed `Regis` peaches, during 9 days storage under refrigeration (5+/-1 degrees C, 85-87% RU) and passive modified atmospheres. The following analyses were realized: color, firmness, texture, soluble solids, titratable acidity, pH, CO(2) and O(2). Increasing in a value and decreasing in b and L values on minimally processed peaches were observed, independent of the citric acid treatment, indicating a browning on the product mainly on the 9(th) day of storage. Overall, the levels of titratable acidity and pH changed at the storage period and at the concentrations studied, unlike the content of soluble solids that remained unchanged. The texture, CO(2) and O(2) changed only for the storage period unlike texture that was higher with the treatment of citric acid 2%. It can be concluded that neither tested concentration of citric acid was effective in preventing enzymatic browning of minimally processed peaches stored the 5+/-1 degrees C and 85-87% RU and passive modified atmosphere.
