Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a complication that may result from chronic hypertension. While nitric oxide (NO) deficiency has been associated with LVH, inconsistent results have been reported with regards to the association of endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) polymorphisms and LVH in hypertensive patients. This study aims to assess whether eNOS haplotypes are associated with LVH in hypertensive patients. This study included 101 healthy controls and 173 hypertensive patients submitted to echocardiography examination. Genotypes for three eNOS polymorphisms were determined: a single-nucleotide polymorphism in the promoter region (T-786C) and in exon 7 (Glu298Asp), and variable number of tandem repeats in intron 4. We found no significant association between eNOS genotypes and hypertension or with LVH (all p>0.05). However, while we found two eNOS haplotypes associated with variable risk of hypertension (all p<0.05), we found no significant associations between eNOS haplotypes and LVH (all p>0.05), even after adjustment in multiple linear regression analysis. These findings suggest that eNOS haplotypes that have been associated with variable susceptibility to hypertension were not associated with LVH in hypertensive patients. Further studies are necessary to examine whether other genes downstream may interact with eNOS polymorphisms and predispose to LVH in hypertensive patients.

Interethnic disparities in the distribution of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) polymorphisms may affect nitric oxide (NO)-mediated effects of and responses to drugs. While there are differences between black and white subjects there is no information regarding the distribution of eNOS gene alleles and haplotypes in Amerindians. We studied three clinically relevant eNOS polymorphisms (T(-786) C in the promoter, a variable number of tandem repeats in intron 4, and the Glu298Asp in exon 7) and eNOS haplotypes in 170 Amerindians from three tribes of the Brazilian Amazon. The results were compared with previous findings for black and white Brazilians. The Asp298, C(-786), and 4a alleles were much less common in Amerindians (5.0%, 3.2%, and 4.1%, respectively) than in blacks (15.1%, 19.5%, and 32.0%, respectively) or whites (32.8%, 41.9%, and 17.9%, respectively) (p<0.001). The haplotype including the most common alleles for each polymorphism was much more common in Amerindians (89%) than in blacks (45%) or whites (41%). Our findings are consistent with a lower genetic diversity in Amerindians compared with blacks and whites. These striking differences may be of major relevance for case-control association studies focusing on eNOS gene polymorphisms and may explain, at least in part, differences in the responses to cardiovascular drugs.

There is strong evidence implicating nitric oxide (NO) in the pathophysiology of migraine and aura. Therefore, genetic polymorphisms in the endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) gene have been studied as candidate markers for migraine susceptibility. We compared for the first time the distribution of eNOS haplotypes including the three clinically relevant eNOS polymorphisms (T(-786)C in the promoter, rs2070744; Glu298Asp in exon 7, rs1799983; and a 27 bp variable number of tandem repeats in intron 4) and two additional tagging single-nucleotide polymorphisms (rs3918226 and rs743506) in 178 women with migraine (134 without aura and 44 with aura) and 117 healthy controls (control group). Genotypes were determined by TaqMan allele discrimination assay, real-time polymerase chain reaction, and polymerase chain reaction followed by fragment separation by electrophoresis. The GA (rs743506) genotype was more common in the control group than in women with migraine (odds ratio = 0.47, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.29-0.78, p<0.01). No significant differences were found in allele distributions for the five eNOS polymorphisms. However, the haplotypes including the variants ""C C a Glu G"" and the variants ""C C b Glu G"" were more common in women with migraine with aura than in women with migraine without aura (odds ratio = 30.71, 95% CI = 1.61-586.4 and odds ratio = 17.26, 95% CI = 1.94-153.4, respectively; both p<0.0015625). These findings suggest that these two eNOS haplotypes affect the susceptibility to the presence of aura in patients with migraine.

Objective: This in vitro study evaluated the influence of the surface pretreatment of a feldspathic ceramic on the shear bond strength of two different resin cements. Background Data: Although several conventional surface treatments have been used on feldspathic ceramic, few studies have investigated the effects of an alternative surface treatment, the association of aluminum oxide sandblasting with Nd:YAG and Er:YAG lasers. Methods: Sixty samples made of a feldspathic ceramic were divided into three groups (n = 20) and treated with (1) controlled-air abrasion with Al(2)O(3) + 10% hydrofluoric acid (HF), (2) Al(2)O(3) + Er:YAG laser, and (3) Al(2)O(3) + Nd:YAG laser. Afterward, silane (Dentsply) was applied on each treated surface. Each of the three main groups was divided into two subgroups (n = 10), where a different resin cement was employed for each subgroup. It was built a cylinder with resin cement (RelyX Arc) in subgroup (A) and with self-adhesive cement (RelyX U100) in subgroup (B). After 24 h at 37 degrees C, the prepared specimens were submitted to shear bond strength test and stereoscopic evaluation to determine the type of failure. Results: Bond strength mean values were not statistically significant for the surface treatment methods or resin cements. Conclusion: The null surface treatment proposed with aluminum oxide sandblasting associated with the Er:YAG or Nd:YAG laser and using cementation with self-adhesive cement can be an alternative bonding technique for feldspathic ceramic, since it was as effective as the conventional treatment with aluminum oxide sandblasting and hydrofluoric acid using the conventional resin cement.

We have investigated the structure of disordered gold-polymer thin films using small angle x-ray scattering and compared the results with the predictions of a theoretical model based on two approaches-a structure form factor approach and the generalized Porod law. The films are formed of polymer-embedded gold nanoclusters and were fabricated by very low energy gold ion implantation into polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). The composite films span (with dose variation) the transition from electrically insulating to electrically conducting regimes, a range of interest fundamentally and technologically. We find excellent agreement with theory and show that the PMMA-Au films have monodispersive or polydispersive characteristics depending on the implanted ion dose. We report on an experimental study of the structures presented by urethane/urea elastomeric films without and with ferromagnetic nanoparticles incorporated. The study is made by using the X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), optical, atomic and magnetic force (MFM) microscopy techniques, and mechanical assays. The structure of the elastomeric matrix is characterized by a distance of 0.46 nm between neighboring molecular segments, almost independent on the stretching applied. The shear casting performed in order to obtain the elastomeric films tends to orient the molecules parallel to the flow direction thus introducing anisotropy in the molecular network which is reflected on the values obtained for the orientational order parameter and its increase for the stretched films. In the case of nanoparticles-doped samples, the structure remains nearly unchanged although the local order parameter is clearly larger for the undoped films. NMR experiments evidence modifications in the molecular network local ordering. Micrometer size clusters were observed by MFM for even small concentration of magnetic particles.

Using ab initio total energy calculations, we show that bilayer systems of ZnO nanoribbons, (ZnO)(2)NR, doped with Co atoms exhibit a piezomagnetic behavior. We find the formation of energetically stable zigzag chains of Co atoms along the edge sites of (ZnO)(2)NR's, Co(Zn(chain))-(ZnO)(2)NR. At the ground state, the antiferromagnetic and the ferromagnetic states are very close in energy, whereas upon longitudinal stretch, parallel to the nanoribbon growth direction, it becomes ferromagnetic. Further electronic structure calculations indicate that not only the magnetic state but also the electronic structure of CoZn(chain)-(ZnO)(2)NR can be tuned by the mechanical stretch. In this case, we find that stretched NR's exhibit dispersive unpaired electronic states within the (ZnO)(2)NR band gap.

Bulk Zn(1-x)Co(x)O samples were synthesized via standard solid-state reaction route with different Co molar concentrations up to 21%. A detailed microstructural analysis was carried out to investigate alternative sources of ferromagnetism, such as secondary phases and nanocrystals embedded in the bulk material. Conjugating different techniques we confirmed the Zn replacement by Co ions in the wurtzite ZnO structure, which retains, however, a high crystalline quality. No segregated secondary phases neither Co-rich nanocrystals were detected. Superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry demonstrates a paramagnetic Curie-Weiss behavior with antiferromagnetic interactions. We discuss the observed room temperature paramagnetism of our samples considering the current models for the magnetic properties of diluted magnetic semiconductors. A method of using X-ray absorption spectroscopy together with resolved grazing-incidence geometry for depth profiling of atomic, electronic or chemical local structures in thin films is presented. The quantitative deconvolution of thickness-dependent spectral features is performed by fully considering both scattering and absorption formalisms. Surface oxidation and local structural depth profiles in nanometric FePt films are determined, exemplifying the application of the method.

We have performed ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to generate an atomic structure model of amorphous hafnium oxide (a-HfO(2)) via a melt-and-quench scheme. This structure is analyzed via bond-angle and partial pair distribution functions. These results give a Hf-O average nearest-neighbor distance of 2.2 angstrom, which should be compared to the bulk value, which ranges from 1.96 to 2.54 angstrom. We have also investigated the neutral O vacancy and a substitutional Si impurity for various sites, as well as the amorphous phase of Hf(1-x)Si(x)O(2) for x=0.25, 0375, and 0.5.

High wave-vector spin waves in ultrathin Fe/W(110) films up to 20 monolayers (MLs) thick have been studied using spin-polarized electron energy-loss spectroscopy. An unusual nonmonotonous dependence of the spin wave energies on the film thickness is observed, featuring a pronounced maximum at 2 ML coverage. First-principles theoretical study reveals the origin of this behavior to be in the localization of the spin waves at the surface of the film, as well as in the properties of the interlayer exchange coupling influenced by the hybridization of the electron states of the film and substrate and by the strain.

The elementary surface excitations are studied by spin-polarized electron energy loss spectroscopy on a prototype oxide surface [an oxygen passivated Fe(001)-p(1 x 1) surface], where the various excitations coexist. For the first time, the surface phonons and magnons are measured simultaneously and are distinguished based on their different spin nature. The dispersion relation of all excitations is probed over the entire Brillouin zone. The different phonon modes observed in our experiment are described by means of ab initio calculations.

The study of structures based on nonstoichiometric SnO(2-x) compounds, besides experimentally observed, is a challenging task taking into account their instabilities. In this paper, we report on single crystal Sn(3)O(4) nanobelts, which were successfully grown by a carbothermal evaporation process of SnO(2) powder in association with the well known vapor-solid mechanism. By combining the structural data and transport properties, the samples were investigated. The results showed a triclinic semiconductor structure with a fundamental gap of 2.9 eV. The semiconductor behavior was confirmed by the electron transport data, which pointed to the variable range hopping process as the main conduction mechanism, thus giving consistent support to the mechanisms underlying the observed semiconducting character.

The combination of metallic phthalocyanines (MPcs) and biomolecules has been explored in the literature either as mimetic systems to investigate molecular interactions or as supporting layers to immobilize biomolecules. Here, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films containing the phospholipid dimyristoyl phosphatidic acid (DMPA) mixed either with iron phthalocyanine (FePc) or with lutetium bisphthalocyanine (LuPc(2)) were applied as ITO modified-electrodes in the detection of catechol using cyclic voltammetry. The mixed Langmuir films of FePc + DMPA and LuPc(2) + DMPA displayed surface-pressure isotherms with no evidence of molecular-level interactions. The Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra of the multilayer LB films confirmed the lack of interaction between the components. The DMPA and the FePc molecules were found to be oriented perpendicularly to the substrate, while LuPc(2) molecules were randomly organized. The phospholipid matrix induced a remarkable electrocatalytic effect on the phthalocyanines; as a result the mixed LB films deposited on ITO could be used to detect catechol with detection limits of 4.30 x 10(-7) and 3.34 x 10(-7) M for FePc + DMPA and LuPc(2) + DMPA, respectively. Results from kinetics experiments revealed that ion diffusion dominated the response of the modified electrodes. The sensitivity was comparable to that of other non-enzymatic sensors, which is sufficient to detect catechol in the food industry. The higher stability of the electrochemical response of the LB films and the ability to control the molecular architecture are promising for further studies with incorporation of biomolecules.

We report the microwave dielectric properties and photoluminescence of undoped and europium oxide doped Ta(2)O(5) fibers, grown by laser heated pedestal growth technique. The effects of Eu(2)O(3) doping (1-3 mol %) on the structural, optical, and dielectric properties were investigated. At a frequency of 5 GHz, the undoped material exhibits a dielectric permittivity of 21 and for Eu(2)O(3) doped Ta(2)O(5) samples it increases, reaching up to 36 for the highest doping concentration. Nevertheless, the dielectric losses maintain a very low value. For this wide band gap oxide, Eu(3+) optical activation was achieved and the emission is observed up to room temperature. Thus, the transparency and high permittivity make this material promising for electronic devices and microwave applications. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.
